Although the use of line and light is not as defined as the color scheme, they still play an important
role in the overall organization of the painting. Gauguin uses curvilinear lines throughout this work
with no right angles or sharp points. The outlines in the background are fairly blurry and some of the
lines blend into one another. In contrast, the characters in the foreground are comprised of precise,
sharp lines. Gauguin goes as far as lightly outlining the bodies with a dark line in order to give them
a sense of depth. Light also serves to enhance certain aspects of the painting. Gauguin has been
careful in his use of light to create some areas of brightness and some of darkness. The central figure
glows in the bright light, which shines down on her from above. This light shows the importance of

I Will Explore The Painting ' Wo Ist Ein Zigarrengeschaft...
Colour can be defined as the result of light hitting an object and its resulting perception based on the
physics of sight or the eye. Artist have been theorising and implementing colour and colour
relationships for many years, and through many artist/art movements. Successful use and
understanding of colour can elevate a particular piece of art far beyond any that do not successfully
implement colour and its various elements. For this essay I will explore the painting "Wo ist Ein
Zigarrengeschäft" (1954) by Jean Phillipe Dallaire(Fig 1–3). In this exploration I will examine
aspects of this painting which include Dallaire 's use of form, and colour. While also considering
briefly Dallaire 's painting in in comparison to Jean Dubuffet 's, painting "The Dandy"(1954)(Fig 4).
Both paintings originate from the same era with two artist interpretations of colour and form, and
two sets of techniques. Before considering the painting itself I will examine the artist himself, as this
will help in understanding his painting, "Wo ist Ein Zigarrengeschäft"(1954). Jean Dallaire (1916–
1965), is a Canadian artist who was known for his work as a painter, illustrator, and professor. His
work is considered as expressive with the use of festive images, shapes, colour and form, where the
real and the imaginary come together in a visual experience (Cheff, 2008). Jean attended art classes
in both Canada and the united states, but his practice was built on mainly self teaching.

Part of human nature is to find faces in images whether they are supposed to be there or not. So,
Rene Magritte purposely made the face unseeable behind the apple. In his painting, there is more
than what meets the eye. The way in which he executed the piece is simple yet it still makes those
who see the art wonder what it represents. As like any artwork, successes and failures can be found
in Magritte's art and how well it portrays the meaning behind the piece. The Son of Man when

The reason I chose this artwork was because it wasn't so much focused on the catastrophe itself, but
the people's effort for survival. On April 15, 1912, the Titanic sank in the North Atlantic Ocean. On
its maiden voyage to New York, New York it collided with an iceberg. On board were 2,200
passengers, of those 1,507 died. Beckmann was said to be inspired by news accounts to produce this
work which at the time was a current event. The date of this art work is 1912–1913, and the media is
oil on canvas. When we think of the sinking of the Titanic, we think about an unsinkable ship going
down. This painting is not about that. It is about the passengers and their fight for survival and what
they must have gone through. The story in this painting is about how they tried to survive and come

Thomas Gainsborough presents a fabulous portrait of Grace Dalrymple Elliott. This is a full–length
painting believed to be commissioned by her lover, Earl of Cholomondeley in 1777 (Major, 2016).
This portrait goes beyond a simple painting of a mistress. Rather, Gainsborough's portrait of Grace
is a study of striking and noble beauty versus a celebration of female sexuality as a commodity.
Gainsborough accomplished this art piece by using several uncommon practices in his portrait
making techniques. The first is using a six–foot handle brush working directly on the canvas to give
himself a better viewpoint of his work. Second, Gainsborough often painted by candlelight,

Upon entering The Met museum, I was overwhelmed by the enormous sculptures and detailed
paintings that filled each gallery. Though there were many galleries, the one that captured my
attention and led to be the focus of my paper is the Max Beckmann gallery. Max Beckmann in New
York sheds light on his connection with New York City. The art gallery displayed fourteen works in
which Beckmann created during his time living in New York. The gallery included many different
forms of art works such as, self–portraits, mythical, expressionist interiors, robust, colorful portraits,
portraits of women, performers, and landscapes. Of the fourteen works, the three that I will focus on
in this paper is the Self Portrait in Tuxedo, The Bark, and Birds Hell. Max Beckman was a German
painter, printmaker, craftsman, and sculptor. Beckmann enjoyed great success, receiving official
honors and awards. His success suddenly reached a turning point when Adolf Hitler came into
power. Hitler resented Modern Art, and led in the abolishment of Modern Art in Germany. Shortly
after, Beckmann was disliked by the Nazi Government and was often referred to as a "Cultural
Bolshevik". Cultural Bolshevism was a term used by Nazi Germany to attack Modernist Movements
in the arts. After enduring such rejection, Mac Beckmann focused his experience of Modern life into
Expressive images with an intensity of emotion and symbolism.

This essay analyses the aesthetic and ideological underpinnings of the Modernist artwork,
Impression, Sunrise of Claude Monet. The artwork and Impressionism is considered to be a visual
articulation of the avant–garde and the latter statement is explained. References to the writings of
Charles Harrison, Clement Greenberg and Wilhelm Worringer is used to theorise the aesthetics of
modernity.
2. IMPRESSIONISM AS MODERN ART
Modernism is the heartbeat of culture, or as Clement Greenberg (1992:754) states, modernism
involves of what "is truly alive in our culture" and it includes more than just art and literature.
Western civilization began to interrogate their foundations and progressed into a self–critical society
(Greenberg 1992:754). This notion began with the theories of the philosopher Immanuel Kant
(1724–1804); he criticized the means itself of criticism (Greenberg 1992:754). Therefore, Greenberg
(1992:754) perceived Kant as the first real Modernist.
An avant–garde or modern movement is a movement that is experimental, artists push boundaries,
are committed to change and are brave. Impressionism slots in perfectly to the definition of avant–
garde. The Impressionists took the first steps into modernism as a self–critical movement
(Greenberg 1992:755). To a modern understanding, the Impressionist paintings are among the most

On looking closely at her sculpture it is seen that cupid's arrows are tied to her along with a garland
of flowers. These are clear connotations of love. Cupid can be seen sitting below the sculpture with
his quiver down almost as though nothing has to be done to bring love in that area. He is seen
tugging the skirt of the lady sitting near him, as though he is urging her to fall in love with the man
on her right, who seems to be trying too. On following the coupled figures down towards the boat, is
a conspiracy whether the boat bought the figures to Cythera or is taking them to the island of
Cythera. On closely observing the body language of the figures, it is noticed how they get closer and

He took a different route than Leger when it came to expressing his artistic skill. He was an
expressionist who distorted the body and space. In Max Beckmann's, Reclining Nude 1929,
Beckman decided to take it a different direction. He shows the woman in a different aspect. It seems
to me as if she is laying down on a reclining chair or mattress showing off her feminine body to her
audience. She seems to letting herself open to the public and he highlights this by his lighting
gestures in the painting. Beckman's main focus is the woman laying down, relaxing; perhaps she is
waiting on company to come around and lay beside her as if she is saying "here I am out in the
open". The iconography at the time related to what other artist were doing and as a well marketed
artist Beckman did the same. Although Beckmann does many things different then Leger, their
interpretations of color, and distorted space had the same idea, but different views. In the painting,

Visiting the Menil Collection and Contemporary Art Museum in Houston for the first time was eye
opening. I never thought art was such a big thing. I knew art was to be creative but other than that I
never would have thought art would have meaning. From reading, "Ways of Looking" by Ossian
Ward, art comes in many forms: entertainment, confrontation, event, message, etc. however, having
to pick two art works and compare and contrast them was difficult since there were many to pick
from. I chose "La lunette d'appproche" and "Suck My Tits," even though there completely different.
They both share a hidden message that need recognition. The Menil Collection in Houston
downtown has a wide variety of art ranging from ancient art to surrealism. Although there were all

Art overall is created and adored by numerous amount of people for many reasons, such as
amplifying shared common visual language. The word art often branches into many different
movements and components. Modern art or Contemporary art is one those components; this specific
genre began mainly in the 1860's to the 1970's. During, this time period artists began throwing aside
their own beliefs in a spirit of experimentation and the bringing of new ideas. The purpose of
Modern art is to beautify one's surroundings with intrigue, its often very diverse and cannot be
easily defined through a list of visual characteristics, artistic themes or cultural concern. Moreover,
Modern art is often hard to understand by people because, unlike Egyptian tomb paintings or Greek
sculptures, it speaks to the dramatic social, political and technological changes of the last 50–60
years, and questions many of society's values and assumptions. Also, Modern artists known for
incorporating a great deal of abstraction into their works and representational forms to convey their

A few weeks ago, I visited the Museum of Modern Art. As I was going through the second
exhibition a particular painting caught my attention. Still life with three puppies by Paul Gauguin
was titled. My first encounter with this painting was through the title, which made me create
negative hypothesis on what the painting was depicting. When looking at this painting all I could
think about was my lack of fascination towards animals, especially puppies, while the person
standing next to me was sighing and smiling about according to her "how cute the puppies are".
Unlike that person, I am not an admirer of puppies and as result I move quickly from the painting.
However, as I made a second round on the exhibition, this time when I saw the painting I was
beginning to notice things like shapes, symbols and colors and immediately forgot about my initial
reaction. I begin to realize that there might be more to the painting than what I originally saw, but I
have been blind from my initial judgments.
In my second observation I was able to look pass this initial judgments drawn by the title. The title
"Still Life with Three Puppies" confirm my assumptions about the painting and prevented me from
continuing seeing what the painting is trying to depict. This name limited my thinking and didn't
allow me to see the painting from what it is.

It is almost a reflection of the man's trident. That same pitchfork shape also appears in the window
of the house that sits in between both figure's heads. Repetition can also be seen in the dotted pattern
of the woman's outfit, which also appears in the material of the curtain that hangs in the house's
window. The echo of verticals in this painting is also strong. The faces and bodies of the figures
seem to be stretched, and narrowed. The pitchfork's slender prongs and the green stripes on the
man's shirt also add to the elongation of their frame. The copious amounts of vertical wood boards

Wood's use of verticality in this painting is overwhelming. There is also a striking luminosity to the
painting. The man and the woman's faces appear to slightly glow, as if you can really see the
reflection of the sun beaming off of their skin. This was achieved by a complex method of applying
glazes. Wood would apply a layer of oil paint, allow it to dry, and then varnish it. This tedious

"Primitivism" was a cultural attitude that arose in Europe during the late 19th and 20th century in
opposition to the increasingly decadent and materialistic European culture. Rather than an artistic
movement, "primitivism" is a European conception of foreign civilizations and lands as "simple",
less developed, and naive. This is an important distinction to make, because "primitivism" was
defined in the eyes of the Europeans who saw foreign civilizations as unsophisticated, indicating
that the concept of "primitivism" is heavily biased in the view of the Europeans. Paul Gauguin and
Henri Matisse were two artists that were highly influenced by the concept of "primitivism," and
some similarity can be depicted in their works such as the use of female nudes, vivid colors, and
artistic techniques. However, their definition and methods of achieving "primitivism" differ heavily,
due to the fact that the vagueness of "primitivism" allows it to be a self–defined concept. These

painting might be based on sketches from 1856 or may date from a later trip to Switzerland. The
painting basically shows a scene of mountains and a lake from a lakeside. Mountains and clouds in
the sky are presented in the background. On the foot of the mountain is a lake surrounded by
disorganized rocks and plants. Some rocks are stretching all the way to the center of the lake, where

Landscape painting has been developed and pursued by many over the centuries. Think back to the
dawn of civilization, cavemen were painting murals upon the cave walls of the nature that
surrounding him and the animals that habituated. The term "landscape" derives from the Dutch word
landschap, which originally meant "region, tract of land" but acquired the artistic connotation, "a
picture depicting scenery on land" in the early 1500s (American Heritage Dictionary, 2000).
All my life, I have lived in small town by the name of Banta. It has the population of roughly 3,000
individuals, making it an extremely small town. I am not even to sure I can technically call it a town

Reflection Paper About Museum
Museum Visit and Reflection I had the opportunity to visit the de Young Museum located at Golden
Gate Park in San Francisco. The de Young is home to collections of American art from the 17th
century to present, African art, oceanic art, art of the Americas, photography and rotating
exhibitions. I had wanted to visit the de Young for some time and finally made my first trip there
with my wife. We decided to time our arrival to the opening of the museum and spent four hours
exploring everything from the artwork on the grounds to the Summer of Love Exhibition. It was a
great day and I definitely felt my mind stretch to comprehend all of the artwork and make the
connection to what I have been learning. In this paper, I will share a description of the different
styles of art I viewed, the experience of viewing art in person and how art is relevant today.
Artists and Artistic Style
While I enjoyed many of the works of art at the museum I will focus on a few pieces that really
caught my attention. The first would be a contemporary sculpture, Anti–Mass created by artist
Cornelia Parker. Constructed from wood, nails and wire, Anti–Mass was made from the remains of a
