By embedding both WIL experiences and PebblePad-based assessment, the employability theme is integrated
throughout the Bachelor of Business degree. In fist year, students are provided with a skills portflio workbook in
Pebblepad to help them connect assessment to transferable skills throughout their degree and to encourage them to
save assessment as assets. A scafflded approach to Portflio pedagogy and WIL ensures students not only have the
opportunity to gain valuable industry experience, but can enrich their experience by documenting and demonstrating
work-based competencies through the creating of a CV/skills Portflio in one of the 3rd year WIL subjects: Profession
Internship, Multiisciplinary Project and Independant Project. Utiising PebblePad in each of the three WIL subjects,
students develop their own CV Portflio, specifically designed workbooks and templates for agendas, minutes and
reflctie diaries. Final presentatins are made using Portflios. The building blocks embedded in the degree ensure
every BBus graduate leaves the institution with a skills-based CV Portflio significantly enhancing their employability.

Editor's Notes
The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program in James Cook University’s College of Business Law and Governance is designed to provide a sequential and engaging educational journey for students which integrates theory and practice and culminates in a capstone experience that embeds the use of PebblePad to facilitate students in collecting and collating evidence into a skills-based ePortfolio.
PebblePad is effectively embedded in the WIL program which is delivered to more than 600 students each year who are enrolled in multiple majors across our Campuses in Townsville, Cairns and Brisbane in Australia, as well as our Singapore Campus, and external students studying online.
In a competitive workplace, students can no longer assume that a University education will naturally lead to employment – There has been a shift in the mindset of employers, who now seek to employ graduates with “employability” skills and attributes in addition to traditional expertise within their discipline.
Graduate employability means that higher education alumni have developed the capacity to obtain and/or create work. Furthermore, employability means that institutions and employers have supported the student knowledge, skills, attributes, reflective disposition and identity that graduates need to succeed in the workforce and is embedded in JCU’s curriculum framework.

The use of PebblePad (a personal learning space where students and staff can create, organise, share and present records of learning and experience and generate and manage an ePortfolio) enhances student’s capacity to reflect on and collect evidence of relevant skills throughout their degree and culminates in each graduate leaving the institution with a skills-based ePortfolio and their own personal PebblePad alumni account.
Introducing PebblePad into our 3 year business degree commences with an induction presentation during orientation week. Several 1st year subjects have embedded workbooks and blogs into assessment items. 2nd year students continue to build their assets and begin to develop folio pages. Final year students complete their core WIL subject where they produce a full ePortfolio.
Why ePortfolios? Industry trends identify that businesses are moving away from traditional paper-based resumes, as usually they only make claims, whereas an ePortfolio is a presentation tool that validates skills and experiences; with embedded hyperlinked evidence to professionally showcase a students work and accomplishments; communicating worth to a potential employer.
In building an ePortfolio in preparation for their final year WIL subject, a four step approach has been adopted. Collect, Select & Reflect steps are implemented throughout their degree and step 4 – Connect is implemented in the WIL subject as a polished ePortfolio.
Students are provided with a Skills Reflection Workbook to help them identify the transferrable skills acquired throughout their degree. Transferrable skills have been identified for each of the courses offered within our Business degree.
WIL experiences in the BBus escalate from low risk opportunities involving observation and simulation in first year to completion of one of three capstone WIL subjects in the final. The Professional Internship option provides students with an opportunity to extend their learning experiences from the classroom into the workplace by completing 100hrs supervised work experience with an approved employer.
One of the ways in which pebblepad is used to help manage the internship subject is the Activities Diary and Reflective journal template which is set to auto-submit and requires students to regularly log their hours in the activities diary which is monitored in the ATLAS workspace. They then complete a structured reflection at the completion of the 100 hours of work experience.

Internship students also source an advertisement for a real job that would be suitable for them to apply for upon graduation and create a CV ePortfolio which includes a cover letter, employment and education history, and skills based pages which provide evidence of meeting the selection criteria.

Students who choose to enroll in the multi disciplinary Project work together in groups combined with members from the various majors in the degree to to produce a practical outcome for real project sourced from an industry partner. In this subject PebblePad is used to both manage the project and present outcomes.
To build professional meeting and project management skills, project teams are required to utilize the meeting agenda and minutes templates provided in pebblepad. The agenda and minute templates are completed and shared amongst team members and set to auto-submit so that the lecturer can monitor used in the ATLAS workspace. Students are encouraged to attach relevant readings and draft work as evidence to the templates to facilitate productive team meetings.

Importantly, students are encouraged to reflect on the value and experience of working in multidisciplinary teams by completing and submitting a structured reflection template which requires them to provide an overview of the role in a professional setting, to identify and elaborate on a critical incident to illustrate learning across the disciplines, and to reflect on how the industry-based project influenced their professional identity.
In both the multidisciplinary project subject (where students work in teams on a project for the industry partner), and the independent project subject (where students are already in employment, and complete an applied project of benefit for their workplace), PebblePad is used to both help scope out the project proposal and present final project outcomes.
Students are provided with a customized project proposal workbook which provides instructions on how to clarify the project organization and scope, complete an action plan including a gantt chart and project risk management. Importantly students prepare and link to their project organization section, a skills based CV ePortfolio which identifies and evidences their skills relevant to successful completion of the proposed project.

Final project outcomes for both subjects are presented through a project ePortfolio which has pages covering introduction and background to the project, overview of the issue or problem addressed, project methodology and management (including links to meeting agendas and minutes for the multi-disciplinary project subject) and summary of key outcomes – including links to final project outcome documents provided to the employer or industry partner. These portfolios are also used as the basis for oral presentations.
In summary, embedding PebblePad within our Bachelor of Business degree with a major focus on Work Integrated Learning, culminates in each graduate leaving our institution with a skills-based CV ePortfolio providing them with a competitive advantage in securing employment.
