Types of music videos
Performance
Performance based videos feature only the band or artist preforming within the video. They
are the cheapest and easiest type of video to make however a suitable location needs to be
found to filmthis type of video in. Performance based videos also tend to use a large variety
of shots, camera movements and edits in order to maintain the interest of the audience.
Narrative
Narrative based music videos contain mostly footage that tells a story or several stories
parallel to one another. The story within a narrative will often be linked to the lyrics or the
overall theme of the music video. If a song has featured in a film then the music video will
often contain footage from that particular film. Often in a narrative music video the style of
the music video itself is good for suggesting the theme of the song. Narrative music videos
can come across as very cheesy as often unoriginal story lines can be used such a typical
romance or heartbroken story line.
Conceptual
Conceptual music videos are based around any idea or concept. They rely heavily on the
post production stage of the making of the video as often lots of editing has to be
completed. Conceptual music videos can be very unusual and difficult to filmbecause of
this. The uniqueness of making a conceptual music video can therefore end up being very
expensive. Conceptual videos are not as popular to make as performance and narrative
music videos as it is often hard for the audience to relate to them.
