2. Lego House – Ed Sheeran
One of my favourite videos shown in class was Lego House by Ed
Sheeran, hence why I chose to analysis it.
The video depicts a fan obsessed with the artist Ed Sheeran, the fan is
shown to be very similar to the artist and shown to have based himself
upon the artist. The similarities are shown through a variety of camera
angles including close ups, mid-shots and crane shots, which all provide
an insight to the similarities of both the artist and the fan. The mise-en-
scene all help to attach a connection in appearance and style of the fan
and artist because of a similar use of costume that the viewers may
associate with the artist. Overall, I really enjoyed watching the music
video as it is well shot and unique.
SCORE= 4.5/5
3. Paradise – Coldplay
This music video is very well shot by Mat Whitecross, and I believe this
due to its pleasant imagery throughout. Colour correction has been
used in the video to create an orange tone, which makes the video
more visually appealing to the viewers providing a warm glow. There
are a variety of camera angles mused primarily long shots and mid-
shots to display the pictures scenery in the background, this pairs nicely
with the colouring of the video. Overall, I really like the video as I
believe it displays a unique and fun video.
SCORE= 4/5
4. Last Friday Night – Katy Perry
The music video for Last Friday Night by Katy Perry is very well shot in my
opinion and provides clear imagery that links with the lyrics. This links to
Andrew Goodwin’s theory of the characteristic of music videos, as he states
there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals as the lyrics are represented
with images. This is done heavily through the mise-en-scene as it helps to
construct an environment that matches the lyrics, such as the costumes and
set-design. The editing of the video features several cutaway shots primarily
in the chorus of the song. Overall, I believe the music video perfectly
captivates the audiences and has a fluent connection with the lyrics of the
song whilst portraying some genre characteristics.
SCORE= 5/5
5. Cocoon- Catfish and the Bottlemen
The music video of Cocoon by Catfish and the Bottlemen is effectively
shot displaying a narrative along side the song. The music video shows
a care home for presumably mentally unfit patients as one tries to
escape with another. This story is shown through the camera by using
over the shoulder shots of staff looking down on patients implying
insinuating their authority. An dull tone is masked upon the video using
colour creation to create a blue effect. This helps to reinforce the
sombre feelings emitted by the songs lyrics. Overall, I think the music
video is well suited to the song but is not shot to the standards of other
videos.
SCORE= 3/5
6. You & I - One Direction
The music video for You & I depicts all of the members of one direction
walking down a pier, this concept is effective in matching the slow pace
of the song and consequently pairs rather nicely. The video features
lots of editing to maximise the quality of the video, an example of this
is the graphic matches throughout the video, which in my opinion
creates pleasing imagery and flow to the music video. The video also
uses a steady cam throughout the video, this use of the camera
provides a stable and smooth shot providing a professional look to the
video. To conclude, I believe the music video is very well shot and
consequently provides a professional yet simplistic look.
