2. Kodaline
Kodaline first came on the scene in 2007 and are
and Irish indie rock/ indie pop band. The song
“All I Want” was featured on their album named
“In a Perfect World” which was released in June
2013. The music video was published on the 9th
of September 2012. The video itself displays a
clear storyline and is influence by the fairytale of
beauty and the beast. The protagonist of the
video is a man with a disfigured face who is in
love with a female co worker.
3. In the beginning of the video an establishing shot is used and
we see a woman using a photo copier which sets the scene of
the office. Also, the music does not kick in straight away so the
audience is able to see the female scream at the presence of
the protagonist. As the woman walks away after nervously
laughing the situation off a long shot is used to show another
man in the office teasing the protagonist.
This allows the audience to understand the storyline instantly
and that the protagonist is judged based on the way he looks.
The video then continues to cut shots of the man working with
other staff members then coming into focus in the background
usually with a startled or concerned expression upon their face.
Each short shot shown conveys that although the man has a
disfigured face he still lives an everyday normal life.
4. The man’s costume is office attire, a shirt and smart trousers along with the
other office workers. Also, it is clear that costume make up has been used to
create the disfigured look for the protagonists face.
During the video, there is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. An
example of this would be the man in the company of his dog and the lyrics
play saying “you brought out the best in me”. A tracking shot is used to show
the man and his dog running through the park. Also, close up shots of both
the dog and man are shown. The shots purpose is to show us the bond that
both the man and the dog share together. Further more a filter has been
applied to the park shots to set the scene of a relaxed atmosphere. The use of
the dog also shows it is a big part of the mans life/happiness almost like a
best friend. A prop that features twice during the video is the protagonists
mug which it has been tampered with by the other men working in the office.
The mug went from saying “Worlds Greatest Employee” to “Worlds Greatest
Freak” which makes the audience feel empathy for the man as he is being
judged based on his appearance.
5. At 3:20 of the video, we see the woman being harassed by the other men in
the office. This is where the music's pace in the song builds up and jump cuts
are used to show the protagonist attacking the other men to protect the
woman. The jump cuts cause the scene to appear chaotic as the protagonist
fights off the other males but also give the man power as he's standing up to
the bullies warning them off. After this, his actions cause his love interest to
actually notice him and the music remains upbeat.
Towards the end of the video we see the man and the woman exchange
numbers and the protagonist skips off down a rainy/gloomy street. The
overall message of the video is portrayed that you shouldn't’t judge someone
because they are different.
