2. Red Handed - Award Winning Crime Comedy Short Film
(2016) - Directed by Edward Andrews
3. Plot Overview
Red Handed is a dark comedy
about an unfit, self-conscious
jogger who stumbles across a
dead body deep in the woods.
He finds a man standing in
front of the body and must
decided whether to run away
or approach the man.
5. Setting/Location
The setting that is shown in the
cation that makes the film very believable as it is a realistic locatio
The setting is a believable as people in todays
society do a lot more outdoors activities e.g hiking, camping.
It creates a normality of the situation.
6. Make up/Costume
The main actor is portrayed as an unfit middle aged man wearing
training gear as his ‘costume’ throughout the whole film. He wears a
orange Craft top with a phone armband around his right arm. On his
head he wears a black headband giving his outfit a 90s theme.
From his waist down he wears black cinch leggings that are three quarts
and look a little big for him. He pairs it with old red trainers and white
socks.
7. Lighting
The lighting used in the film is very bright and sheen, also
known as high key lighting. The high key lighting allows
the audience to identify what time of day the scene is
been taking place, which is daytime. The high key lighting
reduces the amount of contrast because of such strong
lighting. This creates a happy, joyful impression in the
film. However the lighting does not reflect the mood of the
actor. He seems drained out and tired.
8. Props
The director has used realistic props that the audience are
aware of from the reality world, as well as other films. The films
storyline is associated around one prop in particular - the gun.
The director uses other props such as the headphones that the
main actor wears and the water bottle he carries with him.
These are realistic items that any other normal person in the
audience would use if they were to go jogging as well. So this
gives some yet all all members of the audience something to
relate to. Another main prop is the rock the main actor hold in
his right hand covered in blood.
10. Cut editing is used in the film, it is used to visual a transition created in
editing in which one shot is instantaneously replaced on screen by
another.
Continuity editing creates actions that flow smoothly cross shots. This
establishes a story for the audience.
Cross cutting was used a lot in the fight scene of the film. Cross cutting
helps back and forth action go quickly between one or more ones of
action, indicating what is happening simultaneously.
12. The short film begins with an establishing shot to allow the audience to
identify where the film is been located (setting). However the shot is
followed with a track of the character running forward, using the camera
lens go from a long shot to a close up (zooming in).
It is then followed with a tracking shot where the camera is rolled along aid
tracks in order to follow the actor running. This makes the audience feel like
they are tracking the actor and give a feeling that they are part of the
film. The track shot allows the audience to possibly believe that the track
shot is from another person’s point of view.
13. A two shot is shown to allow the audience to see both the characters. The
two shot is used to show the expression of the two characters. The two
shot is shown from an eye-level. Proxemics, the closer the distance
between two characters the closer the relationship. This term emphasises
that these people have just met.
Its then followed by a close up of the main character. Its used
to show clear facial expression for the audience to see the
