Prior Research on Parent Involvement in Education
Before turning to our qualitative study of parent involvement in urban char
–
ter schools, the following sections outline the prior research on the benefits of parent involvement, the barriers to involvement that exist, and the
potential of the charter school context to reduce these barriers.
Benefits of Parent Involvement
Decades of research point to the numerous benefits of parent involvement in education for not only students but also for the parents involved, the
school, and the wider community (Barnard, 2004; Epstein, 2001; Fan & Chen, 2001;
Henderson & Mapp, 2002; Jeynes, 2003, 2007; Lee & Bowen, 2006). De
–
spite the challenges in establishing a causal link between parent involvement and student achievement, studies utilizing large databases have shown
positive and significant effects of parent involvement on both academic and behavioral outcomes (Fan & Chen, 2001; Jeynes, 2003, 2007). For

Parent involvement at Wahlert Catholic is definitely knee deep and rightfully so. The parents in a private school scenario have a greater vested
interest in the product that they are receiving because they are paying for a product that they could get for free. This allows for a certain degree of
entitlement for their child's education. This I get and understand, since you are paying for a service, you want to make sure that you are getting the
best service possible. Having taught it both a public and private system, I can say the I have definitely noticed the increase of parent involvement in
the education practices and in athletics since I moved to private education. My thoughts are that the parental involvement is knee deep because parents
here tend to get involved in more than just about how their student is doing in a class or sport. The phrase "knee deep", to me, involves a level of
involvement that includes those issues but then goes into school policy, teacher placement, and how classrooms operate. The difficult part for me in

In education today, many people do not understand the full aspect and importance of parent involvement in a child's academic lifestyle. So, what is
parent involvement? Parent involvement is participation of a parent in the student's life. This can be shown through events and volunteer opportunities
but also can be shown through taking part in the student's education.
Parent involvement is generally seen to have a positive effect on childhood academics. In the article Parent Involvement and Children's Academic and
Social Development in Elementary
School, it is spoken about the how parent involvement allows for the elimination of problematic behavior of the students. In another article speaking
about parent involvement, titled Parent
Involvement and Student Academic Performance: A Multiple Mediational Analysis, it is allowing the acknowledgment of involvement leading
towards higher academic performances and explains the two mechanisms of parent involvement: perceptions of cognitive competence and
student–teacher relationships. Education is important for both the student and the parent but it is within the parent's roles to positively make a change
and become involved. One significant thing found in the article titled Parent Involvement and Children's
Academic and Social Development in Elementary School, the idea of family involvement is talked high about due to its importance. Statistics showed
that over 90% of parents of elementary school children reported attending general school meetings, like those for the PTA/PTO, as well as participating
in regularly scheduled parent teacher meetings throughout the school year.
Roughly 80% of parents in the nationally representative sample reported attending school events and about 60% reported volunteering in the classroom
(Herrold and O'Donnel (2008). This statistic is interesting to look at because it shows the percentage of parents that had decided to stay active during
their child's education in different ways. Overall, almost all parents who had a child attending elementary school attended any school meeting that

Effects on Classroom Behavior One of the most found benefits of parent/guardian involvement is behavior. Behavior problems form based on many
different aspects. One of these being students struggling in a subject. When students struggle they often act out during these times of instruction.
Reading with your child and helping your child with homework may give them the support they need to feel confident in class. It is stated that, "The

INTRODUCTION
During the last 3 decades, increased attention has been focused upon the effects of home literacy environment and children 's later knowledge (Roberts,
Emergent literacy represents a shift in thinking about young children 's reading. It stresses the relationship between the preschool and beginning reading
phases, among concerns and issues of early–childhood educators and those of reading teachers, and between the home and school environment (Teale,
1995). Marie Clay (1977) first used the term emergent literacy. In the mid–1980s emergent literacy theory gained importance as a way to explain the
beginning of children 's reading skills. Emergent literacy replaced the term reading readiness through the 1980s–1990s. Emergent literacy is based upon
the notion that children learn literacy skills through print. Teale and Sulzby (1991) proposed that emergent literacy be recognized as a new model for
conceptualizing young children 's written language development. Teale and Sulzby defined emergent literacy as "the reading and writing concepts,
behaviors, and dispositions that precede and develop into conventional literacy" (Teale, 1995, p.107).
By the mid–1980s emergent reading/literacy became accepted among researchers, early educators, and reading teachers. Emergent literacy appeared as
an ERIC descriptor and was recognized as a justifiable area of work in the conventions of the National Association for the Education of the Young
Children, the National Reading Conference, the International Reading

Parent Involvement During The Primary School
Parent Involvement during the primary school years is a key factor in a child's education. Having parents or even a parent being involved in their child's
education significantly increases positivity in the classroom and at home. Children who know they have a parent or parents that check their homework,
go over study guides, stay in contact with the teacher, etc. want to strive to do a better job in the classroom. Teachers, administrators, students and the
parents can all benefit from the importance of Parent Involvement. Schools shape the community, and from the help of parents staying involved and
knowing what is going on in the classroom, it helps policymakers decide what the best rules and procedures are for our schools. Studies show that
students with positive parent involvement lead to better test grades, homework, and attendance. Even though parent involvement is important in all of

Throughout history parent involvement has always been studied and has remained an important factor in a child education. It is shown that there has
always been more Parent involvement in the primary years of education as it "increased dramatically from 1999 to 2007 from on average 77% to

Most participants had a dual parent household and a college or higher level education. Majority of them did not receive free or reduced lunch. Majority
of its participants were White (not Hispanic; 89%).
Instruments Used
The Parent Involvement Survey was used for this study. It covers eight scales which has been developed by Walker et al. (2005 to "assess the
motivational variables of Hoover–Dempsey and Sandler's (2005) Model of Parent Involvement. These scales included: Role Activity Beliefs, Efficacy,
Perceptions of General School Invitations, Perceptions of Specific Teacher Invitations, Perceptions of Personal Knowledge and Skills, Perceptions of
Time and Energy, and Parent Choice of Involvement Activities." (Fishman and Nickerson, 2014) Included in the study was a demographics section that
collected information on a child's special needs classification, types of services one receives, gender of the child, child's grade, socioeconomic status,
the child's family structure, relationship of the participant to the child and race/ethnicity of the participant. There were a total of 65 items in this survey.
Results
Results had to be recoded before analyzing data took place. Results were screened for any discrepancies like ranges were within normality or missing

Involvement of Parents in Child Language, Intervention
Literature Review This study by Romski et al. (2011) focuses on how the way parents interpret their child's language development can change through
language interventions. Researchers Head and Abbeduto (2007) who were mentioned in the current study insisted that experiences that the parents
endure should be addressed and are equally important to the child's outcomes. Naturally, there are some concerns that arise with this study. A major
concern is the involvement of parents in language interventions. Researchers doubt that parents would be able to enforce vital intervention strategies on
their own. Kaiser (1993) reported that "Parent implemented language intervention is a complex phenomenon that requires a multicomponent
intervention approach (Kaiser, 1993). Finally, Romski et al. (2011) concluded through a sample of 30 toddlers with developmental disabilities that
parents were successful in conducting language interventions correctly and precisely on their own.
Method
A total of 53 parents consented to having their children participate in this study by Romski et al. (2011). The children were 20 to 40 months old at the
start of the study. In order to participate in this study the children must meet the inclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria was very specific and stated that
the child had to be at risk for speech and language impairment, had to exhibit some basic communication abilities, had to have upper body motor skills,
and had to have a handicap other than delayed

Eventually, at the age of about 13 the child should have been at about a 6th or 7th grade level of education, and reality was only at about a 1st–2nd
grade level of education. There was very little advancement with this child because the only place he received help with his school work was at
school. If the child would have had more help at home, he may have advanced more. The second observation is of parents with a child with some

member to become active with their English language development. Offering free Adult English Language classes where parents and community
