Summer Parent Involvement Committee
For this activity, I decided to include the information I had so far from our summer parent
involvement committee. During the school year, I am part of the parent involvement committee,
which includes 6 teachers and our parent liaison. During the summer, we decided to meet in
between our summer school schedule. There are only two teachers from the committee, myself and
Mrs. Rivera. We also have our parent liaison. For our meetings, we decided to invite two of our
school volunteers, Kevin and Mia. We also invited our LINC coordinator to our meeting, since he
has worked with us during our previous family events.
Throughout the last few school years, the parent involvement committee has grown to host monthly
family events. I have been around

The Effects Of Parental Involvement On Children And Parents
Benefits According to Henderson and Berla (1994), "The most accurate predictor of a student's
achievement in schools is not income or social status but the extent to which that student's family is
able to create a home setting that encourages learning, expresses high expectations, and when
parents become involved in their children's education at school and in the community" (pg. 160).
Parental involvement has benefits for parents, teachers, and children.
Parents
Increase of communication between children and parents – Being involved in a child's life and
education sets the stage for more communication and better relationships between parents and their
children.
1. Increase in parenting – When parents are able to help their child, they feel better about their
abilities as a parent.
2. Knowledge of child's education – Parental involvement ensures that the parent know what is
going on in the classroom.
3. Involvement with the school helps to increase parents understanding of what is going on at
school.
4. Higher expectations – Parents set higher expectations for their child when they know what is
expected of them at school.
5. Support from home – Parents are able to help their child with their homework, and understand the
material.
Teachers
1. Confidence of having a support system/team – Teachers will have more confidence in their job
when they have the support of parents.
2. More respect for what they do daily on their job – Feeling respected on the job helps the

II. Relevant Literature: Parent Involvement and Understandings of Bilingual Education
Parent Involvement is something that is very important and crucial when it comes to the education
of students. Especially to those students who are part of the bilingual programs, parent–teacher
communication is key to success for the students. There tends to be a lack of communication
between the school and parents in which is very alarming for the reason that students are not fully
getting the education experience that they should be getting. Parents have the power and potential to
influence bilingual policies and practice at the school, district, and state wide (Lee, 1999 p. 201)

Sometimes parents avoid the communication on purpose. And when they do communicate with the
teacher, the used the very little of what they know to understand and comprehend what is going on.
Gregory A.Cheatham and Sylvia Nyegenye wrote an article on how sometimes parents get the
wrong impression of teachers because of adjectives that teachers use. When there is a language
barrier in between and you use a certain words, it can be sometimes be assumed that teachers could
be stereotyping students or viewing them negatively. For that reason, we need to have a neutral
wording when talking to parents (Cheatham & Nyegenye 2016) It is expressed threw out the all the
articles that although we need to inform parents, we also need to make things comprehendible for

Parents And Teachers Involvement With Children 's Education
Parents and Teachers involvement with children's education Before I get into my research topic I
want to tell you about the meaning of parental involvement it is "a combination of commitment and
active participation on the parent to the school and to the student. They are many problems
concerning with involvement. Many secondary schools may simply do not know how to deal with
the nontraditional family and the areas that may concern that is represents". When I was doing my
research on parental involvement I also found out some advantages and disadvantages to parent
involvement in their child education you wouldn't think that it was any disadvantage by being a
parent that is involved with their child education. I will be talking about the advantages then later I
will mention later in my research later on, the first advantage for parent involvement is "relating to
you child" while your being involved you have to understand that your child will have difference
and preferences so you have to keep in mind that if you don't relate to your child and understand,
you will probably lose your child into isolation because he or she found it hard to relate to you so
you have to remember to relate and understand so you can close the door on isolation. The other
advantages that you have self–esteem, motivation and behavior because as parent you have a greater
influence on your child and their education so you give them that that motivation to behave also

Hispanic Parent Involvement
Promoting school–community relations with Hispanic parents begins with identifying the barrier
that prevents involvement or engagement is school issues. Those issues can include lack of
knowledge on American schooling, transportation issues, limited English spoken, or problems with
work or childcare availability. Once these barriers can be broken, an aggressive approach can be
initiated to close the academic gaps many English Language Learners are facing. Zimmerman
(2011) states the six strategies for enhancing Hispanic parent involvement include; "remove
language barriers between the parents and the schools, address economic obstacles that hinder
parental involvement, schedule activities to make transportation easier for parents, empower and

Parent Involvement During The Primary School
Parent Involvement during the primary school years is a key factor in a child's education. Having
parents or even a parent being involved in their child's education significantly increases positivity in
the classroom and at home. Children who know they have a parent or parents that check their
homework, go over study guides, stay in contact with the teacher, etc. want to strive to do a better
job in the classroom. Teachers, administrators, students and the parents can all benefit from the
importance of Parent Involvement. Schools shape the community, and from the help of parents
staying involved and knowing what is going on in the classroom, it helps policymakers decide what
the best rules and procedures are for our schools. Studies show that students with positive parent
involvement lead to better test grades, homework, and attendance. Even though parent involvement
is important in all of the years of a student's educational journey, involvement in the primary school
years shape the path ahead for a successful student, which comes from a positive parental influence.
Throughout history parent involvement has always been studied and has remained an important
factor in a child education. It is shown that there has always been more Parent involvement in the
primary years of education as it "increased dramatically from 1999 to 2007 from on average 77% to
89%" (National Household Educators Survey Program) in the primary years. 1999 to 2007 show an

Perception Of Parent Involvement Within Academic Achievement
Research Problem and Hypotheses
The research study, "Perception of Parent Involvement in Academic Achievement"
were to see the insight of different types of parent involvement and how parents, students
and teachers affect the outcome of academic achievements at the junior high school level.
The researcher examines why parents do and do not get involved in their children's
school education in and out of school. The study showed why teachers do not
encourage parents to participate more.
The Author states another problem was that teachers and students believed
involvement with academics at home was more important than attending school
functions, because the one on one involvement the students receive.
The researchers of this study bring to our attention, that parents feel it is only
important to be involved during the early years of education.
Therefore, the results could then inform parents the importance of parental
involvement on children's academic achievement, and teacher was informed of
how to improve parental involvement within the school community.
The author states no specific hypothesis, rather their goal was to examine the
effects of what types of parental involvement work best with junior high school students.
The dependent variables students' academic achievement, and the independent
variable were parental involvement.

Academic Critique Of Parent Involvement Model
This paper is a peer review academic critique of parent involvement modeling written by Laura
Crothers, Jered Kolbert, and Danielle Schultz (2010) entitled: Bullying prevention and parent
involvement modeling. The purpose of this article is parent involvement being used in a bullying
program. My evaluating/ critique of this article is to study the involvement of parents being a
positive role model in children's lives. My main concern is to find ways that will help children who
is being bullied by their peers. In this article, Bullying prevention and parent involvement modeling,
Laura Crothers, Jered Kolbert, and Danielle Schultz (2010). The study is focused on bullying
prevention programs appears to provide support for the social–ecological perception, in which
parent involvement that addresses child bullying behaviors is seen as imperative in helping to stop
bullying behavior in school systems. Throughout the study, there were different data that was
collected; the information is outlined in this article. The authors of the article states that the number
of students identifying themselves as victims is 17–20%. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This paper was about the benefits of parents being more involved in their children's educations,
researchers have noticed that if more parents were involved in their children's educations, they
would have a more positive outlook on life. They have also found that more children would go on to
furthering their education. Peters, Seeds, Goldstein and Coleman performed many research tests on
this in 2007. There were many articles and much research to support that parent involvement

Eventually, at the age of about 13 the child should have been at about a 6th or 7th grade level of
education, and reality was only at about a 1st–2nd grade level of education. There was very little
advancement with this child because the only place he received help with his school work was at
school. If the child would have had more help at home, he may have advanced more. The second
observation is of parents with a child with some known learning disabilities. These learning
disabilities were discovered at the young age of about 6 years old. The school was aware of the
problems that the child had and gave assistance in his learning. The parents were also aware of
problems and were dedicated to assisting with his work at home also. This child received the help he
needed at school and at home with his education. This child grew up and successfully achieved
academically and furthered his education. This observation occurred before the No Child Left
Behind Act was passed. Both the first and second observations involved a child with known learning
disabilities. The difference is that in the first observation, the child did not have a parent who was
dedicated to assisting the child with additional help in his schoolwork. The second observation was
a child who received the additional dedication from the parent with his schoolwork. Therefore, in
the second observation the child successfully achieved academically. The third observation is of a

Students and parents living in public housing have difficulty accessing computers due to the parent's
lack of income. A direct result of having a lack of computer access for students results in low grades
primarily around the C to D range. The organization, HACA is increasing the amount of
opportunities for families to support their students so they will be able to excel in their education
and integrate families into the school community. Technology will assist with communication to the
families and students from the school campus. The communication is the key to parental
involvement and their involvement is the key to the student's success and ability to learn. HACA has
initiated numerous programs for the families and their students. And through the creation of a
website, parents and students will be able to learn more about their student's homework, school
expectations, and open communication directly with the teachers and administrators when an issue
arises. The reality of a website is parents who are not technologically savvy or no access to a
computer will continue to have a difficult time using the HACA website, completing complex

Parent Involvement
Abstract
There has been significant research on how parental involvement affects students, explanations for
why parents do not get involved, and what role both schools and teachers play in creating an
atmosphere conducive to parents becoming actively involved in the educational process. Parental
involvement refers to a parent or family members' participation and contribution to their child's
schooling. These contributions can take place in or outside of the school, with the objective of
improving a child's learning. Parental involvement at home can include activities such as helping
with homework or reading with the child. Involvement at school may include parents volunteering

5). Research overwhelmingly demonstrates that parent involvement in a child's learning is directly
related to achievement. It is critical that families be included as partners in all aspects of the
educational process. How well my students perform in class is greatly dependent upon the support
they receive at home. Research further indicates that the more intensively parents are involved in
their children's learning; the more beneficial are the achievement effects (Arndt & McGuire–
Schwartz, 2008).
Lack of Professional Development For decades, authors have documented the gap that exists
between schools and homes. Teachers and other professionals who work with children generally
desire to support families by providing suggestions, strategies, and other services to help them help
their child, however, often report that they feel ill–equipped and unprepared to work with families
(Abernathy & Bingham, 2007). Teachers are often unaware of how to involve parents in meaningful
ways. "Because of a lack of experience and professional development, many teachers do not have
the skills, knowledge, and dispositions necessary to effectively partner with culturally diverse
parents" (Sanders, 2008). Providing students with a supportive environment means involving
parents in the educational process. Often, parents do not become involved because they do not have

PARENT INVOLVEMENT
Overview
Creating a successful school site involves many aspects of the "school community" to be involved.
The school's community consists of students, faculty, staff, parents, and community. In is
tremendously important that school sites build a partnership with parents for different reasons,
primarily increasing student achievement. As it has been expressed and several times, "Parent (and

Moreover, there are still others in the field who have decided to focus their research on parenting
style and family interactions, or conceptualized parent involvement. Therefore, as evidenced though
research that has been previously conducted, although all are components of parent involvement, the
variety of inconsistencies in definition and focus needs to be united to render more concrete results.
Many assume that those parents who are not visible "don't care about their child's education," (North
West Regional Education Laboratory, 2003). In fact, there are many others things that may be
causing the insufficient parent–school relationship, such poor communication with parents.
Communication is a vital aspect of getting parents involved and is really the foundation of success,
as indicated by Sullivan of the National PTA (2004). Communication should be a regular habit that
is meaningful and a two–way communication network. However, to achieve this there are a few
items that must be given thought for example, who parents are and what they want. These questions
can be addressed by providing convenient events where educators and parents can have meaningful
interactions, conducting surveys, and also by developing and distributing a regular newsletter.
Wanting to improve communication can also have obstacles of its own,

Successful Parent Involvement Analysis
One of the common challenges among educators is effectively working with parents that have
students with disabilities. In several cases there is a lack of communication or disconnect that
hinders parent and teacher relationships; resulting in minimal communication that harms the child's
success. The article, "Guidelines for Successful Parent Involvement" by Kelli Staples and Jennifer
Diliberto addresses several different techniques and methods for effectively working with parents of
those students who have disabilities in the classroom. The authors not only bring in numerous
research based examples regarding parent involvement, but provide multiple tips for involving
parents in various classroom and school activities. The article began by ... Show more content on

After the intro, the authors geared the information toward the fundamentals of successful parent
involvement which included three sections that had different techniques for educators. In two of the
sections there were tables that included modes and frequencies of communication and different
activity ideas that teachers can host to involve parents. For example, one activity was "Family and
Friend Breakfasts." This would be where parents or other family members or friends could come
and eat breakfast in the classroom while being served by the students. This is a great way to show
appreciation to parents and develop positive rapport. Overall, the findings were beneficial in the
sense that I can use the information provided in this article for my own practice. Among the
abundance of research provided, there was also much insight integrated. An important insight from
the authors was for educators to remember that parents and teachers have a common goal no matter
what differences may appear. I aspire to be a teacher that respects the parents of my students and
provides ample opportunities to make them feel a part of my classroom and their child's education.

The Importance Of Parent And Family Involvement In Education
There are many issues discussed when it comes to education including testing, school
accountability, teacher proficiency, and much more. There are many initiatives, programs, and
reforms being implemented to try to improve education outcomes for students. While the school,
administration, and teachers are an important part of student education, there is also another vital
item needed to encourage and ensure student learning: parent or family involvement in their child's
education.
There are countless positive associations between parent and family engagement and student
academic confidence and success. Many organizations, including the National Parent Teacher
Alliance (PTA) and Parents for Public Schools (PPS), work to encourage parents and families take
on an active role in supporting and reinforcing their child's education. The PTA website gives many
parent guides to support and direct engagement. Their guide Making Sure Your Child Gets the
Education They Deserve advises parents to have high expectations of school buildings and
equipment as well as initiate and maintain strong contact with their child's teacher (pta.org). The
PPS websites gives similar advice to parents and families stating, "School success takes great
leadership, effective teachers and engaged parents. We believe that parents are an essential
education partner from the moment their children are born" (2017).
Many families face obstacles to engaging and participating in their child's education

Parent Involvement At Wahlert Catholic
Parent involvement
Parent involvement at Wahlert Catholic is definitely knee deep and rightfully so. The parents in a
private school scenario have a greater vested interest in the product that they are receiving because
they are paying for a product that they could get for free. This allows for a certain degree of
entitlement for their child's education. This I get and understand, since you are paying for a service,
you want to make sure that you are getting the best service possible. Having taught it both a public
and private system, I can say the I have definitely noticed the increase of parent involvement in the
education practices and in athletics since I moved to private education. My thoughts are that the
parental involvement is knee deep because parents here tend to get involved in more than just about
how their student is doing in a class or sport. The phrase "knee deep", to me, involves a level of
involvement that includes those issues but then goes into school policy, teacher placement, and how
classrooms operate. The difficult part for me in this is not only am I an employee of a private school,
but, also, a parent of two children in that same school system. As a teacher, I have experienced a lot
of different situations involving parents and my classroom. When I first started teaching AP World
History, I had a parent call a special meeting between them, myself, and our principal right after

but are parents becoming excessive or are they just trying to protect their child? Others may say it is
the parents job to make sure their child does well but parents need to learn to give their child
freedom and let the child fix their own mistakes. Parental Involvement is not beneficial for
children's academic achievements and lives at home. Firstly, children with helicopter parents score
less on standardized test than those who do not. Children with helicopter parents scored less because
the child could not learn the subject that the parent helped with. A study by two university professors

Parents Involvement In Romeo And Juliet
To what extent should parents be involved in their child's romantic relationships? In the play Romeo

relationship leave them be, because happiness could be a real thing in some cases. Parents need to

things. Children need to know how family feels about the love that has occurred if it's a good or bad

American And Israeli Teacher 's Definition Of Parent...
Introduction
Parent involvement is referred to as "parents' participation in the entire educational process (Dor &
Rucker–Naidu, 2012, p. 246). In addition, it describes parents' expectations and beliefs on
improving their children's educational performance based on home and school involvement (Dor &
Rucker–Naidu, 2012). Although, parent involvement is viewed as very important, some teachers do
not connect with parents beyond teacher and parent conferences. Some of the possible reasons for
why teachers and parents do not connect as often are: "teachers are not sufficiently trained to work
with parents, contextual and cultural contexts, teachers have negative attitude towards cooperation
with parents and parent involvement declines as children gets older" (Dor & Rucker–Naidu, 2012, p.
247). The purpose of this study is compare American and Israeli teacher's definition of parent
involvement and examine their perspective and attitudes towards parent involvement (Dor &

Emergent literacy represents a shift in thinking about young children 's reading. It stresses the
relationship between the preschool and beginning reading phases, among concerns and issues of
early–childhood educators and those of reading teachers, and between the home and school
environment (Teale, 1995). Marie Clay (1977) first used the term emergent literacy. In the mid–
1980s emergent literacy theory gained importance as a way to explain the beginning of children 's
reading skills. Emergent literacy replaced the term reading readiness through the 1980s–1990s.
Emergent literacy is based upon the notion that children learn literacy skills through print. Teale and
Sulzby (1991) proposed that emergent literacy be recognized as a new model for conceptualizing
young children 's written language development. Teale and Sulzby defined emergent literacy as "the
reading and writing concepts, behaviors, and dispositions that precede and develop into
conventional literacy" (Teale, 1995, p.107).
By the mid–1980s emergent reading/literacy became accepted among researchers, early educators,
and reading teachers. Emergent literacy appeared as an ERIC descriptor and was recognized as a
justifiable area of work in the conventions of the National Association for the Education of the
Young Children, the National Reading Conference, the International Reading

Parents Involvement In West Side Story
In many stories and novels, parents play a huge role in them. Sometimes the viewpoints of the
parents cause a lot of tension between characters. In the stories "Two Kinds" and West Side Story
the characters are influenced by parental involvement. West Side Story by Arthur Laurents, is
basically a modern Romeo and Juliet, and "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan. Two Kinds is a story of a little
girl who's mom is so into her thought that her daughter could also be a prodigy at something if she
tried hard enough, and urged her to try many different types of talents, especially piano.

endure should be addressed and are equally important to the child's outcomes. Naturally, there are
some concerns that arise with this study. A major concern is the involvement of parents in language
interventions. Researchers doubt that parents would be able to enforce vital intervention strategies
on their own. Kaiser (1993) reported that "Parent implemented language intervention is a complex
phenomenon that requires a multicomponent intervention approach (Kaiser, 1993). Finally, Romski
et al. (2011) concluded through a sample of 30 toddlers with developmental disabilities that parents
were successful in conducting language interventions correctly and precisely on their own.
Method
A total of 53 parents consented to having their children participate in this study by Romski et al.
(2011). The children were 20 to 40 months old at the start of the study. In order to participate in this
study the children must meet the inclusion criteria. Inclusion criteria was very specific and stated
that the child had to be at risk for speech and language impairment, had to exhibit some basic
communication abilities, had to have upper body motor skills, and had to have a handicap other than

Involvement of Parents in Their Child's Development
Project Part 3
For a working woman, maternity leave is a standard part of giving birth. Physically, the new mother
needs that time to recover from the birthing process, but there is an emotional reason, too. Experts
preach over and over that for those first few weeks of a baby's life, it needs the interaction and touch
of its mother to help with bonding to start their development on the right track. Shouldn't the father
be part of that process as well? Shouldn't the father of the new child be able to take paternity leave
from work? I believe they should, not only to bond with the child, but to help the mother with her
recovery and to coordinate visitors, appointments and any errands that may be needed. Some ...

Friends, relatives, and neighbors alike all want to see the new bundle of joy. Some may want to cook
dinner for the new family and having the father home on paternity leave would help take this stress
off the new mother. When the mother is sleeping or caring for the child, the father could coordinate
with everyone wanting to visit so that the new family is not bombarded with everyone at once. A
mother having to deal with her own recovery as well as caring for the child could easily get
overwhelmed dealing with all the requests. On top of coordinating visitors, the father could manage
the doctor's appointments or errands to get supplies. Some mothers are on medication after birth and
shouldn't drive, not to mention that most new mothers don't want to take their newborn to a grocery
store in those first few weeks. Besides the obvious benefit to a child's development, paternity leave
is beneficial to the family as well. Research has shown that in families that the father takes paternity
leave, fewer divorces occur. This helps the family by strengthening it and not having the father only
play the role of being the primary bread winner. This creates a happy family, which extends to the
workplace as well. One might think there would be

The Importance Of Parent Involvement In Student Education
In this paper, the writer explains the importance of parent or guardian involvement in a students
education. Parent/guardian involvement plays a tole on many different aspects in the classroom
including: overall academic achievement, behavior, and student motivation. Parent/guardian
involvement can range from being part of the school board to simply spending time reading with
your child every night. Research shows that both grades and behaviors are improved due to
parent/guardian involvement.
Introduction Parent involvement in a student's education can have one of the biggest impacts on a
child's life. Parent involvement goes far beyond grade school, and far beyond adolescent years. The
effect that parent involvement has on a child's academics can shape them into a different person.
Children are constantly watching and evaluating their elders. Many times students look to their
parents to find the value in things. When students see their parents or guardians valuing their child's
education, students will also begin to value it themselves. This comes through motivation. When
parents are interested in their child's education and are involved students will gain so much. "The
Department of Education of West Virginia states that 'research shows that when families take an
active interest in their children's schoolwork, students display more positive attitudes, behave better,
and learn more'" (Robinson, Harris, 2014). Something as simple as reading with a child every night
or taking weekend trips to places like museums and involving them in other intellectual activities
will engage students in learning and motivate them to want to learn.
Effects on Classroom Behavior One of the most found benefits of parent/guardian involvement is
behavior. Behavior problems form based on many different aspects. One of these being students
struggling in a subject. When students struggle they often act out during these times of instruction.
Reading with your child and helping your child with homework may give them the support they
need to feel confident in class. It is stated that, "The most commonly cited benefit of parent
involvement is that is can be used to accelerate learning by increasing the amount

is to potential to bring families together, however, the possible of not being close and causing

parents" is debated topic in youth and sports. For the most part, I disagree with the statement
because organized youth sports is providing a safe environment for all players to enjoy and learn the
sports. The youth sports purpose is to dealing with children safely and responsibly with organizing
practices and teaching skills of the sport. It is important for the coach to teach and help children

Benefits of Parent Involvement
Decades of research point to the numerous benefits of parent involvement in education for not only
students but also for the parents involved, the school, and the wider community (Barnard, 2004;

spite the challenges in establishing a causal link between parent involvement and student

Involvement Fosters Academic Achievement
Countless studies have found that kids perform better in school when their parents are involved with
their schoolwork. Compared to students whose parents are uninvolved, kids with involved parents
get better grades and are thought more highly of by teachers.
These effects remain in the future, even if parents become less involved as the child ages. Parent
involvement in school–based activities seems to have the greatest effect on kids' grades, but home–
based parent involvement also plays at least some role. Involved parents enhance school
performance in a number of ways, including by fostering a mastery orientation toward learning and
encouraging self–discipline, a skill that's critical to school success.

The Importance Of Parent Involvement In Education
In education today, many people do not understand the full aspect and importance of parent
involvement in a child's academic lifestyle. So, what is parent involvement? Parent involvement is
participation of a parent in the student's life. This can be shown through events and volunteer
opportunities but also can be shown through taking part in the student's education.
Parent involvement is generally seen to have a positive effect on childhood academics. In the article
Parent Involvement and Children's Academic and Social Development in Elementary
School, it is spoken about the how parent involvement allows for the elimination of problematic
behavior of the students. In another article speaking about parent involvement, titled Parent
Involvement and Student Academic Performance: A Multiple Mediational Analysis, it is allowing
the acknowledgment of involvement leading towards higher academic performances and explains
the two mechanisms of parent involvement: perceptions of cognitive competence and student–
teacher relationships. Education is important for both the student and the parent but it is within the
parent's roles to positively make a change and become involved. One significant thing found in the
article titled Parent Involvement and Children's
Academic and Social Development in Elementary School, the idea of family involvement is talked
high about due to its importance. Statistics showed that over 90% of parents of elementary school
children reported attending general school meetings, like those for the PTA/PTO, as well as
participating in regularly scheduled parent teacher meetings throughout the school year.
Roughly 80% of parents in the nationally representative sample reported attending school events
and about 60% reported volunteering in the classroom (Herrold and O'Donnel (2008). This statistic
is interesting to look at because it shows the percentage of parents that had decided to stay active
during their child's education in different ways. Overall, almost all parents who had a child attending
elementary school attended any school meeting that occurred. Attending school meetings is a great
start to getting parents involved. Meetings can give the parent general ideas of what will be going on

Parents Involvement In Music Education Essay
Parental involvement is a key factor in music education. An analysis showed that "Students whose
parents were involved in music and supportive of their children's musical participation developed
better self–concepts in music and felt more comfortable academically and socially(Sichivista)."
Without the parent's involvement, an ensemble would not be able to live to the full potential that it
can. The parents are also what helps the students become greater musicians with their help and
motivation. Unfortunately dealing with parents does not always go as easy as we want them to.
Some parents are willing to step in but they do not know where to start. They are completely lost,
they do not know here to start. "Parents willing to support their child's musical learning often do not
know how to help the child learning often do not know how to help the child overcome difficulties
and obstacles during the early stages of the learning(Margiotta)." Also, stepping in too much can be
a problem in music education. Some parents force ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

help them grow as a musician. It is not an easy job to get the parents involved but there are ways to
get their attention. Mrs. Joubert my Conservaroty Orchestra conductor and private lessons teacher

Parent Involvement In Chapter 12 (FAPE)
Using Wong's 2008 definition of parent involvement in Chapter 12 (Amatea, 2013), provide a
critical response clarifying your ethical stance on Special Education educators moral and ethical
engagement with parents related to a meaningful assurance of FAPE Wong (2008) stated parent
involvement is "the extent to which parents are interested in, knowledgeable about, and willing to
take an active role in the day–to–day activities of the children" (Amatea, 2013). Using this statement
the ethical stance is to include parent involvement with parent choice of what they are comfortable
with. If parents are re not interested or knowledgeable about a topic they would not be included.
According to IDEA parents are required to participate in the evaluation, IEP meetings, and
placement decisions. In 1997 an IDEA amendment made it mandatory to report progress to parents
(Yell, 2012). Parent involvement is essential to the success of a student. Parents must be involved in
the development of a student's FAPE. If parents do not participate in an IEP and school personnel
lack of effort to include parents in the IEP meeting it is seen as a denial of FAPE (Yell, 2012).

Learning is a teamwork effort dispersed between teachers, students, faculty, and parents.
Furthermore, understanding Student and Parent Rights and Responsibilities are important for
educators to understand for their own individual classroom knowledge. In addition, there are many
different constitutional rights that are complicated and depend on the circumstance that is present.
Therefore, understanding some of these principals will tremendously help educators, parents, and
even students become more familiar with these legal justices that can lead to quality learning
environments. Furthermore, parents are essential for helping a child with cooperation and
continuous motivation. There are many benefits listed in the textbook that involve parent
involvement such as: Positive behavior, long–term achievement, conscientious homework
completion, increase in attendance, and graduation rates. Additionally, with the interaction between
parents and students, it is a lot easier for the teacher to deal with disruptive behavior by gaining an
insight to their home life which might indicate why they are acting a certain way (Introduction to
Teaching, 336). With that being said, parent involvement might not be a natural habit. Therefore,
making a proactive effort to reach out to parents is essential. Parent involvement starts at the
beginning of the year when a teacher tells about his or her class. Secondly, parent teacher
conferences allow parents to be reinforced on news throughout the

Motivations for Involvement: A Preliminary Investigation of Parents of Students with Disabilities
Summary of Research Problem
The purpose of this survey study is to investigate parental involvement of students with disabilities.
Parents with special needs children deal with many different factors when it comes to parent
involvement in a school setting. The Hoover–Dempsey and Sandler's (2005) Model of Parent
Involvement, as well as, family structure, race/ethnicity, and family socioeconomic status (SES)

Most participants had a dual parent household and a college or higher level education. Majority of
them did not receive free or reduced lunch. Majority of its participants were White (not Hispanic;

Instruments Used
The Parent Involvement Survey was used for this study. It covers eight scales which has been
developed by Walker et al. (2005 to "assess the motivational variables of Hoover–Dempsey and
Sandler's (2005) Model of Parent Involvement. These scales included: Role Activity Beliefs,
Efficacy, Perceptions of General School Invitations, Perceptions of Specific Teacher Invitations,
Perceptions of Personal Knowledge and Skills, Perceptions of Time and Energy, and Parent Choice
of Involvement Activities." (Fishman and Nickerson, 2014) Included in the study was a
demographics section that collected information on a child's special needs classification, types of
services one receives, gender of the child, child's grade, socioeconomic status, the child's family
structure, relationship of the participant to the child and race/ethnicity of the participant. There were
a total of 65 items in this survey.
Results
Results had to be recoded before analyzing data took place. Results were screened for any
discrepancies like ranges were within normality or missing data. "According to Heppner and

exam, file taxes, or acquire groceries, for we live in a predominantly English speaking country.

The Importance Of A Parent 's Involvement
The Importance of Child Development A child's success in life is directly linked to how they
developed as a child. There are many aspects that go into child development. Experiences,
environments, as well as how they reach developmental milestones play a huge role in the overall
shaping of the child. If a child is deprived of these important developments, their hope for a normal,
rewarding life is very slim. In my experience as a mother I have found that being involved in
helping my daughter reach her developmental goals has been very rewarding for the both of us. The
importance of a parent's involvement in reaching these milestones is almost immeasurable. Simple
things, such as stacking blocks with your child can have a dramatic effect on their development.
Months before I had my daughter I researched all kinds of methods and activities to do with her to
encourage her development. There are four major components of child development that are
imperative to the child's future. Physical, emotional, social and cognitive development are four types
of development essential to a properly developed child. Physical development is the foundation of
basic physical skills such as walking, running, holding a pencil and shaking hands. There are two
main components of physical development that include fine motor skills and gross motor skills. An
example of a fine motor skill is when a child learns how to tie their shoe, or a baby picks up a small
object with their fingers. I have

The Parent And Community Involvement Program
The parent and community involvement program that I would design would incorporate social and
learning opportunities for parents and community member to become active with their English
language development. Offering free Adult English Language classes where parents and community
members could attend 2–3 nights a week would be an aggressive approach in acquiring the English
language. But in the real world, this is extremely difficult for a lot of people to commit to. Some
parents work long hours in physically demanding jobs and have young children that they need to
tend to when they get home. I would have this program available for those that could participate, but
also offer monthly courses that parents or members of the community could attend without having to
commit to the entire program. They could attend the sessions that they are interested in and that fit
in their schedule. This program would help parents connect with their child's school community and
would also benefit the student. Each month of the school year would focus on a specific topic that
would engage parents in the school community. In September, the school year would start with a
potluck for the back to school night before the start of school or shortly after the start of school.
Each family would bring a dish to pass and would be able to tour the campus and meet the teachers
in a social atmosphere. There would be no need for child care because the entire family would be
welcome to attend. At

Summer Parent Involvement Committee

  • 1. Summer Parent Involvement Committee For this activity, I decided to include the information I had so far from our summer parent involvement committee. During the school year, I am part of the parent involvement committee, which includes 6 teachers and our parent liaison. During the summer, we decided to meet in between our summer school schedule. There are only two teachers from the committee, myself and Mrs. Rivera. We also have our parent liaison. For our meetings, we decided to invite two of our school volunteers, Kevin and Mia. We also invited our LINC coordinator to our meeting, since he has worked with us during our previous family events. Throughout the last few school years, the parent involvement committee has grown to host monthly family events. I have been around ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. The Effects Of Parental Involvement On Children And Parents Benefits According to Henderson and Berla (1994), "The most accurate predictor of a student's achievement in schools is not income or social status but the extent to which that student's family is able to create a home setting that encourages learning, expresses high expectations, and when parents become involved in their children's education at school and in the community" (pg. 160). Parental involvement has benefits for parents, teachers, and children. Parents Increase of communication between children and parents – Being involved in a child's life and education sets the stage for more communication and better relationships between parents and their children. 1. Increase in parenting – When parents are able to help their child, they feel better about their abilities as a parent. 2. Knowledge of child's education – Parental involvement ensures that the parent know what is going on in the classroom. 3. Involvement with the school helps to increase parents understanding of what is going on at school. 4. Higher expectations – Parents set higher expectations for their child when they know what is expected of them at school. 5. Support from home – Parents are able to help their child with their homework, and understand the material. Teachers 1. Confidence of having a support system/team – Teachers will have more confidence in their job when they have the support of parents. 2. More respect for what they do daily on their job – Feeling respected on the job helps the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Parent Involvement Definition II. Relevant Literature: Parent Involvement and Understandings of Bilingual Education Parent Involvement is something that is very important and crucial when it comes to the education of students. Especially to those students who are part of the bilingual programs, parent–teacher communication is key to success for the students. There tends to be a lack of communication between the school and parents in which is very alarming for the reason that students are not fully getting the education experience that they should be getting. Parents have the power and potential to influence bilingual policies and practice at the school, district, and state wide (Lee, 1999 p. 201) levels in which it is very important to have good relations with the parents. ... And when they do communicate with the teacher, the used the very little of what they know to understand and comprehend what is going on. Gregory A.Cheatham and Sylvia Nyegenye wrote an article on how sometimes parents get the wrong impression of teachers because of adjectives that teachers use. When there is a language barrier in between and you use a certain words, it can be sometimes be assumed that teachers could be stereotyping students or viewing them negatively. For that reason, we need to have a neutral wording when talking to parents (Cheatham & Nyegenye 2016) It is expressed threw out the all the articles that although we need to inform parents, we also need to make things comprehendible for ... • 7. Parents And Teachers Involvement With Children 's Education Parents and Teachers involvement with children's education Before I get into my research topic I want to tell you about the meaning of parental involvement it is "a combination of commitment and active participation on the parent to the school and to the student. They are many problems concerning with involvement. Many secondary schools may simply do not know how to deal with the nontraditional family and the areas that may concern that is represents". When I was doing my research on parental involvement I also found out some advantages and disadvantages to parent involvement in their child education you wouldn't think that it was any disadvantage by being a parent that is involved with their child education. I will be talking about the advantages then later I will mention later in my research later on, the first advantage for parent involvement is "relating to you child" while your being involved you have to understand that your child will have difference and preferences so you have to keep in mind that if you don't relate to your child and understand, you will probably lose your child into isolation because he or she found it hard to relate to you so you have to remember to relate and understand so you can close the door on isolation. The other advantages that you have self–esteem, motivation and behavior because as parent you have a greater influence on your child and their education so you give them that that motivation to behave also strive for greatness ... • 9. Hispanic Parent Involvement Promoting school–community relations with Hispanic parents begins with identifying the barrier that prevents involvement or engagement is school issues. Those issues can include lack of knowledge on American schooling, transportation issues, limited English spoken, or problems with work or childcare availability. Once these barriers can be broken, an aggressive approach can be initiated to close the academic gaps many English Language Learners are facing. Zimmerman (2011) states the six strategies for enhancing Hispanic parent involvement include; "remove language barriers between the parents and the schools, address economic obstacles that hinder parental involvement, schedule activities to make transportation easier for parents, empower and ... • 11. Parent Involvement During The Primary School Parent Involvement during the primary school years is a key factor in a child's education. Having parents or even a parent being involved in their child's education significantly increases positivity in the classroom and at home. Children who know they have a parent or parents that check their homework, go over study guides, stay in contact with the teacher, etc. want to strive to do a better job in the classroom. Teachers, administrators, students and the parents can all benefit from the importance of Parent Involvement. Schools shape the community, and from the help of parents staying involved and knowing what is going on in the classroom, it helps policymakers decide what the best rules and procedures are for our schools. Studies show that students with positive parent involvement lead to better test grades, homework, and attendance. Even though parent involvement is important in all of the years of a student's educational journey, involvement in the primary school years shape the path ahead for a successful student, which comes from a positive parental influence. Throughout history parent involvement has always been studied and has remained an important factor in a child education. It is shown that there has always been more Parent involvement in the primary years of education as it "increased dramatically from 1999 to 2007 from on average 77% to 89%" (National Household Educators Survey Program) in the primary years. 1999 to 2007 show an increasingly amount of parent ... • 13. Perception Of Parent Involvement Within Academic Achievement Research Problem and Hypotheses The research study, "Perception of Parent Involvement in Academic Achievement" were to see the insight of different types of parent involvement and how parents, students and teachers affect the outcome of academic achievements at the junior high school level. The researcher examines why parents do and do not get involved in their children's school education in and out of school. The study showed why teachers do not encourage parents to participate more. The Author states another problem was that teachers and students believed involvement with academics at home was more important than attending school functions, because the one on one involvement the students receive. The researchers of this study bring to our attention, that parents feel it is only important to be involved during the early years of education. Therefore, the results could then inform parents the importance of parental involvement on children's academic achievement, and teacher was informed of how to improve parental involvement within the school community. The author states no specific hypothesis, rather their goal was to examine the effects of what types of parental involvement work best with junior high school students. Academic Critique Of Parent Involvement Model This paper is a peer review academic critique of parent involvement modeling written by Laura Crothers, Jered Kolbert, and Danielle Schultz (2010) entitled: Bullying prevention and parent involvement modeling. The purpose of this article is parent involvement being used in a bullying program. My evaluating/ critique of this article is to study the involvement of parents being a positive role model in children's lives. My main concern is to find ways that will help children who is being bullied by their peers. In this article, Bullying prevention and parent involvement modeling, Laura Crothers, Jered Kolbert, and Danielle Schultz (2010). The study is focused on bullying prevention programs appears to provide support for the social–ecological perception, in which parent involvement that addresses child bullying behaviors is seen as imperative in helping to stop bullying behavior in school systems. Parent Involvement in Education Parental Involvement in Education Lisa Vasas Pennsylvania Highlands Community College Abstract This paper was about the benefits of parents being more involved in their children's educations, researchers have noticed that if more parents were involved in their children's educations, they would have a more positive outlook on life. They have also found that more children would go on to furthering their education. Peters, Seeds, Goldstein and Coleman performed many research tests on this in 2007. Eventually, at the age of about 13 the child should have been at about a 6th or 7th grade level of education, and reality was only at about a 1st–2nd grade level of education. There was very little advancement with this child because the only place he received help with his school work was at school. If the child would have had more help at home, he may have advanced more. The second observation is of parents with a child with some known learning disabilities. These learning disabilities were discovered at the young age of about 6 years old. The school was aware of the problems that the child had and gave assistance in his learning. The parents were also aware of problems and were dedicated to assisting with his work at home also. This child received the help he needed at school and at home with his education. This child grew up and successfully achieved academically and furthered his education. This observation occurred before the No Child Left Behind Act was passed. Both the first and second observations involved a child with known learning disabilities. The difference is that in the first observation, the child did not have a parent who was dedicated to assisting the child with additional help in his schoolwork. The second observation was a child who received the additional dedication from the parent with his schoolwork. Therefore, in the second observation the child successfully achieved academically. A direct result of having a lack of computer access for students results in low grades primarily around the C to D range. The organization, HACA is increasing the amount of opportunities for families to support their students so they will be able to excel in their education and integrate families into the school community. Technology will assist with communication to the families and students from the school campus. The communication is the key to parental involvement and their involvement is the key to the student's success and ability to learn. HACA has initiated numerous programs for the families and their students. And through the creation of a website, parents and students will be able to learn more about their student's homework, school expectations, and open communication directly with the teachers and administrators when an issue arises. The reality of a website is parents who are not technologically savvy or no access to a computer will continue to have a difficult time using the HACA website, completing complex forms, and uncomfortable with the gifted are going to have a difficult time using the HACA website and filling out complex forms ... • 22. Parent Involvement Abstract There has been significant research on how parental involvement affects students, explanations for why parents do not get involved, and what role both schools and teachers play in creating an atmosphere conducive to parents becoming actively involved in the educational process. Parental involvement refers to a parent or family members' participation and contribution to their child's schooling. These contributions can take place in or outside of the school, with the objective of improving a child's learning. Parental involvement at home can include activities such as helping with homework or reading with the child. Involvement at school may include parents volunteering in the classroom or attending workshops. Parental involvement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 5). Research overwhelmingly demonstrates that parent involvement in a child's learning is directly related to achievement. It is critical that families be included as partners in all aspects of the educational process. How well my students perform in class is greatly dependent upon the support they receive at home. Research further indicates that the more intensively parents are involved in their children's learning; the more beneficial are the achievement effects (Arndt & McGuire– Schwartz, 2008). Lack of Professional Development For decades, authors have documented the gap that exists between schools and homes. Teachers and other professionals who work with children generally desire to support families by providing suggestions, strategies, and other services to help them help their child, however, often report that they feel ill–equipped and unprepared to work with families (Abernathy & Bingham, 2007). Teachers are often unaware of how to involve parents in meaningful ways. "Because of a lack of experience and professional development, many teachers do not have the skills, knowledge, and dispositions necessary to effectively partner with culturally diverse parents" (Sanders, 2008). Providing students with a supportive environment means involving parents in the educational process. Often, parents do not become involved because they do not have anything ... Therefore, as evidenced though research that has been previously conducted, although all are components of parent involvement, the variety of inconsistencies in definition and focus needs to be united to render more concrete results. Many assume that those parents who are not visible "don't care about their child's education," (North West Regional Education Laboratory, 2003). In fact, there are many others things that may be causing the insufficient parent–school relationship, such poor communication with parents. Communication is a vital aspect of getting parents involved and is really the foundation of success, as indicated by Sullivan of the National PTA (2004). Communication should be a regular habit that

In several cases there is a lack of communication or disconnect that hinders parent and teacher relationships; resulting in minimal communication that harms the child's success. The article, "Guidelines for Successful Parent Involvement" by Kelli Staples and Jennifer Diliberto addresses several different techniques and methods for effectively working with parents of those students who have disabilities in the classroom. In two of the sections there were tables that included modes and frequencies of communication and different activity ideas that teachers can host to involve parents. For example, one activity was "Family and Friend Breakfasts." This would be where parents or other family members or friends could come and eat breakfast in the classroom while being served by the students. This is a great way to show appreciation to parents and develop positive rapport. Overall, the findings were beneficial in the sense that I can use the information provided in this article for my own practice. Among the abundance of research provided, there was also much insight integrated. An important insight from the authors was for educators to remember that parents and teachers have a common goal no matter what differences may appear. • 29. The Importance Of Parent And Family Involvement In Education There are many issues discussed when it comes to education including testing, school accountability, teacher proficiency, and much more. There are many initiatives, programs, and reforms being implemented to try to improve education outcomes for students. While the school, administration, and teachers are an important part of student education, there is also another vital item needed to encourage and ensure student learning: parent or family involvement in their child's education. There are countless positive associations between parent and family engagement and student academic confidence and success. Many organizations, including the National Parent Teacher Alliance (PTA) and Parents for Public Schools (PPS), work to encourage parents and families take on an active role in supporting and reinforcing their child's education. The PTA website gives many parent guides to support and direct engagement. Their guide Making Sure Your Child Gets the Education They Deserve advises parents to have high expectations of school buildings and equipment as well as initiate and maintain strong contact with their child's teacher (pta.org). The PPS websites gives similar advice to parents and families stating, "School success takes great leadership, effective teachers and engaged parents. • 31. Parent Involvement At Wahlert Catholic Parent involvement Parent involvement at Wahlert Catholic is definitely knee deep and rightfully so. The parents in a private school scenario have a greater vested interest in the product that they are receiving because they are paying for a product that they could get for free. This allows for a certain degree of entitlement for their child's education. This I get and understand, since you are paying for a service, you want to make sure that you are getting the best service possible. Having taught it both a public and private system, I can say the I have definitely noticed the increase of parent involvement in the education practices and in athletics since I moved to private education. My thoughts are that the parental involvement is knee deep because parents here tend to get involved in more than just about how their student is doing in a class or sport. The phrase "knee deep", to me, involves a level of involvement that includes those issues but then goes into school policy, teacher placement, and how classrooms operate. Others may say it is the parents job to make sure their child does well but parents need to learn to give their child freedom and let the child fix their own mistakes. Introduction Parent involvement is referred to as "parents' participation in the entire educational process (Dor & Rucker–Naidu, 2012, p. 246). In addition, it describes parents' expectations and beliefs on improving their children's educational performance based on home and school involvement (Dor & Rucker–Naidu, 2012). Although, parent involvement is viewed as very important, some teachers do not connect with parents beyond teacher and parent conferences. Some of the possible reasons for why teachers and parents do not connect as often are: "teachers are not sufficiently trained to work with parents, contextual and cultural contexts, teachers have negative attitude towards cooperation with parents and parent involvement declines as children gets older" (Dor & Rucker–Naidu, 2012, p. 247). The purpose of this study is compare American and Israeli teacher's definition of parent involvement and examine their perspective and attitudes towards parent involvement (Dor & Rucker–Naidu, 2012). Emergent literacy replaced the term reading readiness through the 1980s–1990s. Emergent literacy is based upon the notion that children learn literacy skills through print. • 48. Involvement of Parents in Child Language, Intervention Literature Review This study by Romski et al. (2011) focuses on how the way parents interpret their child's language development can change through language interventions. Researchers Head and Abbeduto (2007) who were mentioned in the current study insisted that experiences that the parents endure should be addressed and are equally important to the child's outcomes. Naturally, there are some concerns that arise with this study. A major concern is the involvement of parents in language interventions. Researchers doubt that parents would be able to enforce vital intervention strategies on their own. Kaiser (1993) reported that "Parent implemented language intervention is a complex phenomenon that requires a multicomponent intervention approach (Kaiser, 1993). Finally, Romski et al. (2011) concluded through a sample of 30 toddlers with developmental disabilities that parents were successful in conducting language interventions correctly and precisely on their own. Method A total of 53 parents consented to having their children participate in this study by Romski et al. (2011). The children were 20 to 40 months old at the start of the study. Physically, the new mother needs that time to recover from the birthing process, but there is an emotional reason, too. Experts preach over and over that for those first few weeks of a baby's life, it needs the interaction and touch of its mother to help with bonding to start their development on the right track. Shouldn't the father be part of that process as well? Shouldn't the father of the new child be able to take paternity leave from work? I believe they should, not only to bond with the child, but to help the mother with her recovery and to coordinate visitors, appointments and any errands that may be needed. Some ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Friends, relatives, and neighbors alike all want to see the new bundle of joy. Some may want to cook dinner for the new family and having the father home on paternity leave would help take this stress off the new mother. When the mother is sleeping or caring for the child, the father could coordinate with everyone wanting to visit so that the new family is not bombarded with everyone at once. A mother having to deal with her own recovery as well as caring for the child could easily get overwhelmed dealing with all the requests. On top of coordinating visitors, the father could manage the doctor's appointments or errands to get supplies. Some mothers are on medication after birth and shouldn't drive, not to mention that most new mothers don't want to take their newborn to a grocery store in those first few weeks. Besides the obvious benefit to a child's development, paternity leave is beneficial to the family as well. Research has shown that in families that the father takes paternity leave, fewer divorces occur. This helps the family by strengthening it and not having the father only play the role of being the primary bread winner. This creates a happy family, which extends to the workplace as well. • 52. The Importance Of Parent Involvement In Student Education In this paper, the writer explains the importance of parent or guardian involvement in a students education. Parent/guardian involvement plays a tole on many different aspects in the classroom including: overall academic achievement, behavior, and student motivation. Parent/guardian involvement can range from being part of the school board to simply spending time reading with your child every night. Research shows that both grades and behaviors are improved due to parent/guardian involvement. Introduction Parent involvement in a student's education can have one of the biggest impacts on a child's life. Parent involvement goes far beyond grade school, and far beyond adolescent years. The effect that parent involvement has on a child's academics can shape them into a different person. Children are constantly watching and evaluating their elders. Many times students look to their parents to find the value in things. When students see their parents or guardians valuing their child's education, students will also begin to value it themselves. This comes through motivation. When parents are interested in their child's education and are involved students will gain so much. "The Department of Education of West Virginia states that 'research shows that when families take an active interest in their children's schoolwork, students display more positive attitudes, behave better, and learn more'" (Robinson, Harris, 2014). Something as simple as reading with a child every night or taking weekend trips to places like museums and involving them in other intellectual activities will engage students in learning and motivate them to want to learn. Effects on Classroom Behavior One of the most found benefits of parent/guardian involvement is behavior. Behavior problems form based on many different aspects. One of these being students struggling in a subject. When students struggle they often act out during these times of instruction. Reading with your child and helping your child with homework may give them the support they need to feel confident in class. It is stated that, "The most commonly cited benefit of parent involvement is that is can be used to accelerate learning by increasing the amount ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Discussion Research On Parent Involvement Essay Prior Research on Parent Involvement in Education Before turning to our qualitative study of parent involvement in urban char – ter schools, the following sections outline the prior research on the benefits of parent involvement, the barriers to involvement that exist, and the potential of the charter school context to reduce these barriers. Benefits of Parent Involvement Decades of research point to the numerous benefits of parent involvement in education for not only students but also for the parents involved, the school, and the wider community (Barnard, 2004; Epstein, 2001; Fan & Chen, 2001; Henderson & Mapp, 2002; Jeynes, 2003, 2007; Lee & Bowen, 2006). De – spite the challenges in establishing a causal link between parent involvement and student achievement, studies utilizing large databases have shown positive and significant effects of parent involvement on both academic and behavioral outcomes (Fan & Chen, 2001; Jeynes, 2003, 2007). For example, research has found that parent involvement is related to a host of student achievement indi – cators, including better grades, attendance, attitudes, expectations, homework completion, and state test results (Astone & McLanahan, 1991; Cancio, West, & Young, 2004; Dearing, McCartney, Weiss, Kreider, & Simpkins, 2004; Gut – man & Midgley, 2000; Izzo, Weissberg, Kasprow, & Fendrich, 1999; Senechal & LeFevre, 2002; Sheldon, 2003). • 60. The Importance Of Parent Involvement In Education In education today, many people do not understand the full aspect and importance of parent involvement in a child's academic lifestyle. So, what is parent involvement? Parent involvement is participation of a parent in the student's life. This can be shown through events and volunteer opportunities but also can be shown through taking part in the student's education. Parent involvement is generally seen to have a positive effect on childhood academics. In the article Parent Involvement and Children's Academic and Social Development in Elementary School, it is spoken about the how parent involvement allows for the elimination of problematic behavior of the students. In another article speaking about parent involvement, titled Parent Involvement and Student Academic Performance: A Multiple Mediational Analysis, it is allowing the acknowledgment of involvement leading towards higher academic performances and explains the two mechanisms of parent involvement: perceptions of cognitive competence and student– teacher relationships. Education is important for both the student and the parent but it is within the parent's roles to positively make a change and become involved. One significant thing found in the article titled Parent Involvement and Children's Academic and Social Development in Elementary School, the idea of family involvement is talked high about due to its importance. Statistics showed that over 90% of parents of elementary school children reported attending general school meetings, like those for the PTA/PTO, as well as participating in regularly scheduled parent teacher meetings throughout the school year. Roughly 80% of parents in the nationally representative sample reported attending school events and about 60% reported volunteering in the classroom (Herrold and O'Donnel (2008). This statistic is interesting to look at because it shows the percentage of parents that had decided to stay active during their child's education in different ways. Overall, almost all parents who had a child attending elementary school attended any school meeting that occurred. Attending school meetings is a great start to getting parents involved. Furthermore, understanding Student and Parent Rights and Responsibilities are important for educators to understand for their own individual classroom knowledge. In addition, there are many different constitutional rights that are complicated and depend on the circumstance that is present. Therefore, understanding some of these principals will tremendously help educators, parents, and even students become more familiar with these legal justices that can lead to quality learning environments. Furthermore, parents are essential for helping a child with cooperation and continuous motivation. There are many benefits listed in the textbook that involve parent involvement such as: Positive behavior, long–term achievement, conscientious homework completion, increase in attendance, and graduation rates. Additionally, with the interaction between parents and students, it is a lot easier for the teacher to deal with disruptive behavior by gaining an insight to their home life which might indicate why they are acting a certain way (Introduction to Teaching, 336). With that being said, parent involvement might not be a natural habit. Therefore, making a proactive effort to reach out to parents is essential. • 76. The Importance Of A Parent 's Involvement The Importance of Child Development A child's success in life is directly linked to how they developed as a child. There are many aspects that go into child development. Experiences, environments, as well as how they reach developmental milestones play a huge role in the overall shaping of the child. If a child is deprived of these important developments, their hope for a normal, rewarding life is very slim. In my experience as a mother I have found that being involved in helping my daughter reach her developmental goals has been very rewarding for the both of us. The importance of a parent's involvement in reaching these milestones is almost immeasurable. Simple things, such as stacking blocks with your child can have a dramatic effect on their development.
