2. FRONT COVER LAYOUTS
VIBE QUNCUTKERRANG
In all four front cover layouts, the masthead is placed at the top of the page. This is because it is one of the main features which
grabs the audience attention, besides the main image is placed within the middle ground of the front cover to grab the
readers/viewers attention. This has been used for three of the magazine layouts, however for Uncut magazine they did not use
a central image but small images the cover the whole page, almost like a background rather than centre image. As for the
cover lines they are placed on both sides of the main image in smaller boxes. As for Uncut and Q magazine they both include
puffs on the magazine. This is used especially for sale/promotion purpose. Also Vibe, Kerrang and Uncut magazine include a
stand first at the top of the magazine, however Q magazine include a Tagline instead. This is used to grab the audience
attention and tell them more features about what the magazine will contain inside. The use of a tagline also grabs the audience
attention and gives a overall idea about what the magazine is and contains, drawing their attention into the magazine. Another
feature is the run a long footer, as it’s used in Kerrang. I will look out for all these layout features whiles creating my own front
cover.
3. CONETNST PAGE LAYOUTS
VIBE
UNCUT
KERRANG
Q
The Vibe and Kerrang magazine similarly positioned the contents title in the left top corner of the
contents page. This makes it clear and visible for the audience. Both magazines located the 'top heads’
one after another, almost in a list. However, Kerrang magazine contains an editors section for the
audience to read. They have both have located the images in the same place, but Kerrang include
more images. As for Uncut magazine they have a very small image, I believe this is un-effective as the
image is one of the most important elements that attracts the audiences attention. I can also tell that
Uncut magazine has challenged the conventions of a contents page, as the other three magazine
contain images. Q magazine have a lot of images on there contains page which supports each page.
This give these audience a wider idea about what each page will contain. Another feature which all the
magazine have accept Uncut have is the date. Which means it can be a convention. Therefore I will
look out for it when it comes to creating my contents page. Through this analysis I have learnt a lot on
layouts and conventions, as I have noticed that Uncut magazine challenges that conventions a lot.
Another element that supports my point is that their on their contents page they have a paragraph on
how they are doing which dominates most of the contents pages. This is unusual to see and normally
the image and content dominate the page.
4. DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD LAYOUTS
Within the Kerrang double page spread
layout particularly like the domination of the
I have which covers one of the facing pages
bringing the readers attention and focus,
this also kind of of goes for Q magazine.
Another feature I think its effective is the pull
quote placed within the body of the text, the
same goes for Vibe and Uncut magazine.
This is something I will definitely include as
it brings readers attention to the subject of
the feature. As for Vibe and Uncut I like how
they have used to images for their double
page spread, this will relate to a wider
audience and will grab their attention into
reading the article. It is also balanced out
with the text. Also due to the lack of title and
no tile for Uncut, Vibe and Kerrang
magazine loos the importance due to large
image, which speaks for itself. I also like this
use of filler which is effectively covering the
negative space of double page spread,
interfering between images. Another feature
which is used in Uncut, may consider using
it.
VIBE
Q
KERRANG
UNCUT
Q and Kerrang magazine and placed at the top the page under the title is the sub-heading, I
believe this a convention, due to it being placed at the top under the title because it sums up
the whole article it gives a little more information than the title. Therefore the audience need to
see it before reading the article in order to have a wider understand of the article. I like the use
of the sub-heading therefore I may use it in my own double page spread and follow the layout
technique.
