1. House style for my
magazine
During this presentation, I will displaying the development of the house style for my music magazine. This
will include:
Magazine masthead and logo
Font style and size
Type of language
Colour
Layout
For each section, I will be including my own suggestions and comments from others to come to a decision
on what will be included in my magazine. During this section if the planning I will definitely keep referring
to the codes and conventions research I did into magazines of my similar and different genre to help me
create the best possible R&B music magazine, such as Vibe, Billboard, R&B and much more.
2. Font style and
sizeThis is a very vital part of the magazine, this is because different fonts and sizes create different reactions for the
viewer, which is also important for the selling of the magazine. This is because sometimes it can encourage
consumers to buy the magazine. For the magazine will be considering using the same font throughout the magazine
as this will allow the reader to feel a sense of familiarity between every page and section of the magazine, especially
through the headlines and cover stories.
For the front cover and the contents page I will use different fonts to help me create different meanings for the
various cover lines and headlines, especially with the front cover. The more important headings and titles, such as
(issue number, date and price) will be in a large size than the rest of the text as this will emphasis there importance
and will grab the audience attention to reading them first. I will sue font will really stand out and approach the
audience and other simplistic ones. However I will make sure that the masthead and title on the content page will be
the largest size of the page as this is the most important, but the body text will be more simplistic font such as
‘Calibri’ in sizes around 12 depending on the text and where I will be placing it. I will also be considering using pull
quote of my front cover for one off my cover lines and in the double page spread which will be placed between the
text. This will be in Italics and a different font as I want it to stand out against the rest of the text. Not only that but it
will also be larger, as this will appear more interesting across the page and I will expect the readers to read the quote
before they read the article.
My inspiration for the decisions I have taken has been taken from my research I have done in existing music
magazines when analysing their codes and conventions.
3. Type of language
This is the part of my planning which will determine whether readers will be engaged
with the text they are reading. This is because, I have decided not too formal
language in my magazine to represent the audience and create a sense of
connection with them. As my target audience are young people interested in R&B
music. They will more likely enjoy reading a magazine with simple language about a
famous artist, as this will them feel engaged with the text and will feel that they are
getting something juicy and interesting out of this article. This will relate to the use
of Gratifications theory in which reader will look to the magazine for ‘Integration’ –
to fell art of the group.
If I did have a slightly older audience than my language would have to be more
formal. Which would mean changing the house style and identity of the magazine.
4. Masthead and logo for the magazine
To start of with I came up with a lot of different
masthead ideas which I wrote down in a list. I then
started to deleted the masthead which I thought
weren’t very original or represented R&B in the best
possible way. After I was done I picked my best three
names and began to design them on Photoshop and
InDesign.
The list of masthead
ideas:
Wire
Chord
Beats
Vibez
Mode
Volume
Affect
Right note
The three names I picked were Volume,
Mode and Affect. The reason I choose
these three because I believe they are the
most original, powerful and suitable for
my audience and R&B music magazine.
The next few slides will show the designs I
created and explanation on why I have
chosen to do them in such a way.
5. Masthead 1 (Mode)
I was interested in picking out this masthead ‘MODE’ because a lot od different modes are used in all music
and R&B therefore I wanted something which will represented R&B but at the same time mysterious. I did
this because this type of name will encourage the audience to by and approach the magazine due to them
not knowing what it is exactly about.
I created this logo on Photoshop, as seen it is quite basic due to the simple black colour and yellow out line. I
am happy with this as I do want my logo to be quite simple but edgy. I have chosen these colours because
they are dark and this is what I have seen throughout most of R&B magazine and through my research. The
font I have chosen in very basic bold with sharp edges. I decided on this font because most of R&B
mastheads are this type of font, so for that reason I wanted to stick to the codes and conventions. I made all
the letters in capital because this really stands out, this is not a conventions because through my research
some magazine have full capital letters and other didn’t, so this is part of my choice. Not only that but I have
added many other features to give it this stand up effect but keeping it simple at the same time such as drop
shadow, inner shadow, inner glow and much more.
6. This is the second masthead I have picked and created. The reason behind picking this masthead is
that I wanted to choose a word that will have and affect on the reader and what better word can do
that other than they actual word ‘Affect’. I also felt that it su9its will with the R&B magazine and so
did my friend when I took there opinions as some are my target audience.
The colour I chose is simple blue, again I wanted to pick out something dark and simplistic. I also
added other affects on to it to give the edges a glow and make the letters pop out a little more. This
is because I did not want them to be to flat and boring. The font I have decided on is very simple
but modest, giving a quirky edgy look. The letters aren’t all in capital like my previous masthead, as I
wanted to create something different which will allow me to have a wider designs to pick from at
they end.
Masthead 2 (Affect)
7. Masthead 3
(Volume)
My third and final masthead head is ‘VOLUME’, I decided on
picking this masthead because I was inspired by the music of R&B,
as people who listen to it including me really like to turn it up and
listen loudly. Therefore while listening to the music I came up with
this masthead which I believe is prefect and original like I want.
Not only that but it also represents a music magazine, allowing
people to know it’s a music magazine but yet need to think in
deeply to know which type of music it represents.
I designed this logo on Photoshop, I choose all the letter to be in
capital because it emphasis the name. the font is very basic bold
with sharp edges, going with the convention of an R&B magazine.
The colour is dark yellow gradually getting lighter. I choose this
colour because yellow represents wealth and happiness, which
what R&B listeners look up to being wealthy. I have also added
other features such as a yellow put line, this to make the
masthead bolder and stronger.
I really fell in love with is name therefore I decided on going
in to creating more designs for this name as I may come up
with something even better than the one I have already
produced.
The second design I came up is with simple white colour and
font. However I changed up it with added a volume bar for
the letter ‘L’. I found this really colour and unique, however
on problem was that I didn’t really find it suitable for my
target audience and the R&B theme because it is too childish
and bubbly.
Therefore I moved on to creating something else which is my
third design. The font of this is still simple but the colours are
dark read and shades of black, adding other affects as well
such as black outline to make it stand out more and bring it
out. I really love this and the colours as they suit very well
8. Colour
The colour scheme of my magazine is going to be dark red, black and maybe white or grey,
which is related to my third dark red masthead I created. This has been inspired by the research I
done and went through the codes and conventions of existing music magazines. I saw these
similar colours in the other magazines house style, which will allow the reader to familiarise
themselves with this particular genre of magazine along with the colour scheme.
I will use these colours throughout all my three pages i.e. front cover, content and double page
spread, as this will show the sense of consistency, just like a professional media product.
However, I will definitely still be playing around with the colours on the different pages. For
example, the double page spread I may include a WoB effect for the main text and this will make
it simple for the reader to read and eye catchy., but I will definitely still be using the same
colours. The dark red will be a key concept throughout all the three pages.
My inspiration has come form my research, as this displayed me with a lot of magazines which
looked in this similar way. However I will still change it up a little bit to make my magazine
unique.
9. Layout
Finally the layouts of my
pages, these are very
important in terms of
planning. This is because when
it comes to putting everything
together I will know what goes
where. I have several ideas for
my front cover, content page
and double page spread.
Which I have already created. I
will be able to refer to these
layouts during the
construction process of my
magazine. My layouts have
been inspired by existing
magazines I have previously
researched in, so I have a
strong idea of what appeals to
an audience, to encourage
them to buy the magazine also
with the questionnaire
answers. I will also make sure
that the layout goes will with
the other components I have
