Most of us get running water in taps all day long. But some people have to fill water in pots and
vessels and store them

In summer we use more water We don’t use as much water as the
surrounding is cool.
We sweat more and feel more thirsty
and drink more water

Rivers, Ponds, Sea and Ocean, Lakes are water that we see or flows on the ground are called surface
water.
Where else can we find water?

When it rains, where does the water go?
When it rains the water gets soaked into the ground
and gets stored underground. The water will goes
thru the soil, sand, rocks gets stored in the ground.
We call this as Ground water or Water

1. Springs and streams are natural Sources
of ground water. The join to the river or lakes
2. Digging wells and drawing water.
3. Bore drilling and setting water pumps.

No , so where do they get water from?
In Deserts small water bodies surrounded by trees is usually
found. These are called Oasis. Oasis is a natural spring or
source of underground water source.

Yes both surface water and ground water are important in our daily uses.
Water is used in most of our day today activities.
How does water reach our homes from surface water or ground water?
In places where there Is no surface
water we dig bores and extract
water with the help of machines or
hand pumps and wells.
In most cities water comes
from river, pond or stream.
They are brought to homes
thru pipes.

9. Can we use any water that we see on the surface?
No, Sometime water can be dirty and unfit to use.
There is plenty of water in the sea. Can we use seawater for our home?
Seawater is salty and we cannot use it to
• Drink or cook with it
• Wash clothes( Spoil the clothes)
• Cannot use on plants as it is not good for the soil.
So how else can we use seawater?
A process called desalination will help remove the salt from the sea water.
But this process is very expensive.

10. Where does the water in our taps come from?
It Comes from the rivers.
Do we get water directly from rivers and use it?
No, We cannot use the water from rivers
and pond directly.
why ?
because the water in the rivers and Ponds can
have dirty and waste that will affect our health.
So, how can we Use the river water?
1. The water taken from the river goes to
a water treatment centre.
The Machines clean the water and send to the
tanks for storage.
2. Clean water comes thru Pipes
underground to our homes.

11. Now, in place where there is no surface water where does the water come from?
We can draw groundwater using wells and pumps and store in homes and tanks
Some Place have less or no surface water and ground water how do they get water?
They Get water tankers to bring water from other
locations. They will store the water in drums and
vessels

12. What happens to the water that you use at home for washing hands, clothes, vessels
etc.? Where does it go?
This water goes into the drain and into a different pipe. It goes thru a different
treatment centre and then back into the river.

13.  Does everyone need water for cooking, cleaning and washing clothes?
 Does everyone need water for playing and cleaning cars?
 Does everyone get water from surface or ground? Is that water cleaned and brought to their homes thru pipe

or surface water near their locality.

No, they wont get clean water.
How do you think they will clean the water?
They will first filter the water with a cloth and
then boil the water and filter it again before they drink or
cook with it

14. Every time you use water, make sure you do not waste it. So that we can save as
much water as possible so other can get water too.
What are the ways you can save water?
• Close tap while brushing.
• Use bucket while showering
• Using dishwasher instead of running water
• Use the water that you used for cleaning vegetables in your garden for plants.
• Do not pour chemicals and Oil into the drain as they contaminate the water for recycling
• Close or fix any tap that is leaking
• Don’t dispose the left over water in your water bottle, use them to water plants.
