Block 3 - Stems and Roots
What are the different Parts of a
Plant?
- Leaves, Flower , Fruit, Stem and
Root
Why do plants need many different
parts?
- Each part of a plant play a
important role for the plant to grow.
We learnt
Leaves – Kitchen of Plant
Fruits – Store food and Protect Seeds
Roots and stem have special
functions that help the Plant to
Survive.
Experiment to Try
What will happen when you put a white flower with its stem in a bottle of
Coloured water?
The flower will turn into the Colour of the water .
Why?
Because the Colour from the water is carried by the Stem to the
Flower. This changes the color of the Flower.
Functions of Stem
What do Stems do?
 Stem holds all parts of the plant together(Root,
Fruit, leaves and Flower)
 Stems carry water and food to all parts of the
plant.
 Most plant have strong stem that helps the plant to
Stand straight.
Do the Stems of all plant stand straight?
- No, Not all plants have a strong stem. Creepers,
and climbers have weak stem and depend need
support to stand Straight.
Name two plants that have weak stem?
Pumpkin – Creeper
Money Plant - Climber
We learnt that Stems Carry food and water to all parts of the Plant.
In Some Plants stem are little different because the do other things for the
Plant
Which is the stem in Potato and Cactus?
The Potato is the stem of the potato plant. The stem is round.
The big, think leaf of the cactus is the stem. The stem is usually flat and
green. Some Cactus can be eaten
LP2 – Different Stems
Stem
Spines
Plants like Potato and ginger are stems . They stores food for the plant and
we can eat them.
2) In Cactus plant, the leaves become spines and the stem makes the food
for plant.
Stems that store
food and we can
eat them.
How is a Potato stem different from other plant stems?
- Potato, ginger garlic store food for plant. During winter or dry times this food
helps the plant to live.
Why do we Eat them?
We eat it because it absorbs a lot of Nutrients from the soil and is healthy food for us
How is a Cactus different from other plant stems?
A Cactus stem is thick and it makes it own food. Usually the leaves make food,
but in cactus the leaves become spines because they grow in hot places.
Guess some plants which stores food in their stem and can be eaten.
-Asparagus, Sugarcane , Celery, Bamboo shoots, Spring onion are some plants
whose stem can be eaten
Roots
Where are roots of plant found?
Roots are usually found under the ground.
Why do roots grow underground?
Roots grow underground so that the plant holds
firmly to the soil
How do roots help the Plant?
Roots absorb water and minerals from the soil.
Roots Fix the plant to the soil.
What will happen if the roots of the plant are
removed?
- The Plant will die because it will not receive water
and minerals.
Why did the Plant without roots Die?
- Plants need water to live and grow. The function of
roots is to absorb water and give to the leaves to
produce food.
Why Can we find the roots of a Banyan tree hanging
from the stem? How do these roots help?
- The branches of Banyan tree are long and heavy.
Roots from the stem support the branches .
What is the difference between these two roots?
Many Tiny roots that grow from the stem.
Plants with such roots are called Fibrous Root Plant
Has one big root and many small roots.
Plants with Such roots are called Tap roots
Type of Roots
TAP ROOT FIBROUS ROOT
Have one big, strong main root and small
roots coming out of it.
They grow deep into the soil.
Most trees have TAP ROOTS
Some more Tap roots are
Beetroots, Mango. Tusli etc.
Some plants do not have one main root,
but many small roots coming out of the
bottom of the stem
Some eg of fibrous plants are Coconut,
grass, rice, sugarcane etc.
Tap Root
Small roots
Stem
Small fibrous roots
In Some Plants the roots stores the food
for the plant. We call these as root
vegetables
Root Vegetables absorb large amount of
nutrients from the soil.
Eg Carrot , Beetroot, Radish Parsnip are
some of the root vegetables
How do we know if a plant has Tap Roots or Fibrous
Roots without uprooting the plant?
-We can find out by the leaves of the Plant.
If the veins on the leaves are like a net it is a Tap root
plant
If the veins do not cross each other then they are
fibrous root plant
Quiz time
1) _____________ holds all parts of the plant together?
- Stem
2) How does the stem help the plant?
Stem carries water and food to all parts of the plant and helps plant stand straight.
3) What happens if plants don’t have stem?
Leaves will not be able to get water from roots to prepare food for plant.
4) Name two plants where the stem stores food?
potato and Ginger
5) Name a tree that has hanging roots?
Banyan Tree.
6) Why do roots grow deep into the soil?
Roots holds the plant firmly in the soil. So they run deep into the soil.
Quiz time
7) Name three roots that stores food for plant? What are they called?
- Carrot, beetroot, radish. They are called root vegetables
8) What are the two types of roots?
Tap Root and Fibrous root.
9) Which kind of root has one strong main root?
- Tap root
10 ) What kind of root does this tree have?
11) How does carrot plant food storage different from a potato plant?
-Carrot store the food in its roots where as potato stores
the food in its stem
Fibrous root
Tap root
