Plants can prepare their own food. But Animals depend on Plants or other animals to
get energy.
We can divide animals based on the food they eat. Some animals eat only plants
materials like grass, leaves, branches, fruits and roots. They have special digestive
system that help them to digest the plants including grass.
We call such animals as HERBIVORES animals.
Animals that kill and eat other animals to get energy and nutrients are called
Carnivores
Most Cat family animals like lion, cheetah, jaguar, tiger are all carnivores animals.
What do we call animals that eat both plant and animals?
we call animals that eat both plant, plant products and animals as
Omnivores animals.
Some omnivores animals hunt and kill other herbivores and omnivores animals for food.
They do not eat all kinds of plants. They mainly eat fruits and vegetables.
Guess this food these animals eat?

If you put a tiger where there are only plants, What will happen to the tiger?
- The tiger will die because tigers are carnivores animals and depend on other
animals for food
Is vulture Carnivores, omnivores or herbivores?
- Vultures do not kill other animals, they eat flesh of dead animals. They are
called Scavengers.
Are Hyenas carnivores or Omnivores?
Hyenas are mostly Scavengers which means
they eat leftovers of other animals.
They are also carnivores because kill birds,
insects lizards, snakes and birds
How can you tell the if an animal is carnivores, herbivores or omnivores ?
Based on their teeth we can tell what kind of food an animal eats.
What kind of teeth do I have? Guess what I Eat? Which kind(classification) of
animal do I belong to?
I have big sharp and pointed teeth( called
canines) that help me tear flesh of other
animals.
I am a Carnivores animal. I kill and eat other
animals.
Tiger panther Crocodile
What kind of teeth do I have? Guess what I Eat? Which kind(classification) of
animal do I belong to?
I have flat Broad teeth that help me
to chew and grind plants.
I am a herbivores and eat only plant
They do not have any sharp teeth.
All herbivores animals have this kind
of teeth.
Horse Rabbit
What kind of teeth do Omnivores animals have?
Omnivores eat both plant and meat. They have both types of teeth. Flat
, broad and sharp teeth. The sharp teeth(Canines) are not as big as the
Carivores animals.
Sharp teeth that are not as big as carnivores animals
Grinding teeth to break down food
Flat teeth to bite into plants, fruits and vegetables
Summary
How do we eat food?
We eat food with our hands. But most animals do not have free hands like us.
So they have to use different body parts to gather food.
How do Cats and Dogs drink milk or eat their food? Which body part do they use?
They use their tongue to drink milk or eat their
food. Most animals use their tongue to drink
water or other liquid.
How do frogs catch their food?
Frogs use their tongue to catch their prey.
Other insects like Lizard, chameleon catch their prey with
their tongue.
How does a Butterfly gather its food?
Butterfly uses it straw like mouthpart to suck nectar from
flowers.
How do Elephants gather food?
Elephants use their strong and long trunk to break branches of
trees. They use their trunk to suck water like straw and put into
its mouth
How do giraffe gather food?
giraffe have long necks that helps them to eat leaves of
tall trees.
How about snakes?
Snakes swallow their food and curl around trees
to crush them.
We learnt about birds. How do they gather food?
Birds use their beak and Claws to gather food.
How do animals like giraffe and elephant get their food?
Giraffe uses it long neck to eat leaves from talll trees, elephants uses it
trunk to break branches and eat.
How do animals that eat flesh gather food?
Animals that eat flesh have sharp teeth and claws that help them to hold
and tear the flesh of its prey.
From this we understand that different animals eat different kinds of food. They use
different features to gather food.
We can understand the order in which living things depend on each
other for food. This is called a FOOD CHAIN.
Put these in Order.
Grass is the first in food
chain. Then, we have the
herbivores insects and
animals.
Which are then eaten by the
omnivores or carnivores
animals.
What is same about these two
food chains?
Rabbits eat grass and other plant product. What kind of animal is a
rabbit.
Herbivores
What happens when an animal dies?
When an animal dies it will decompose and add back nutrients into
the soil.
What do we call the first in the food chain as?
we call them as Producers. Plants are the first in the food chain.
what classification do cats belong (herbivores, omnivores or
carnivores)
Omnivores
What do we call animals that eat leftovers of dead animals?
Scavengers. Eg Vulture, Hyena. They feed on leftovers of animals that
were killed
Classify these animals as carnivores, omnivores and herbivores
Omnivores Herbivores
Omnivores
OmnivoresHerbivores
Herbivores
Carnivores
Carnivores
Carnivores
What will happen if all the herbivores animals die?
If all the herbivores animals die then the carnivores animals will kill the
omnivores animals for food.
If all omnivores animals die then what happens?
The carnivores animals may start killing other carnivores animals for
food or may die without food.
