A Gentle River, Clean and Soft
Like a Crystal blanket
Ran across the beautiful ground
It has no smell and has no color
But Oh! Look what happened
As it passed thru the city?
The Water turned brown
It is muddy and
Hard to see through
It smells like rot and feels like grime
Along with it, comes a bundle of trash
and now everyone remembers
That clear clean stream that used to run
What is the color of clean water?
What does clean water taste like?
Clean water does not have taste
How does clean water smell?
Clean water does not have smell
Clean water is Color less
Most of the Earth Is covered with water.
Oceans and Seas hold most water, but we cannot drink it.
We get fresh water(clean water) from Rivers, Lakes, Ponds and
Springs.
Water from tap is
clear and has no
smell
Water from puddle is dirty and
has a muddy smell
Sometimes water from different rivers have different color, taste and smell why do you think that is?
Why do you think that is?
Different rivers flow thru different places and carry
different things along their path
Can you drink this water?
No
Why cant you drink?
Its harmful to humans and to all sea creatures and other animals.
What happens to the river when it passes thru different
places ?
When rivers flow thru places they carry all the things that are in its path.
When a river passes thru a city, mud, dirt, oil plastic and paper , all these mix
with water and the water becomes polluted.
These harmful things that pollute the water are called POLLUTANTS.
Pollutants make the water look and smell bad.
Before
Now
Yamuna and Ganga are some
of the largest rivers
That flows in the northern
Part of India
Water from the rivers is used
for Drinking, washing, and
cleaning by people, animals
and plants.
Yamuna and Ganga both start in the
Himalayas. The snow in these mountains
melts and flows into a river.
Yamunotri Glacier – melts to form the
Yamuna River
Gangotri Glacier - melts to form the Ganga
river
The water is very clean at where the river
starts.
Yamuna river flows through Uttarakhand,
Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar
Pradesh
As the pass thru these places, the water gets
polluted with Garbage, soap, polythene
bags(pastic), chemicals from factory and
other waste.
Yamuna river in
earlier days
The Ganga and Yaumna meet in the Triveni sangam in Allahabad and flow into
the sea carrying all the things in its way.
Rivers are connected to one another. When one river gets dirty the other river also
becomes polluted. It is important to keep the rivers clean so we can use the water for
drinking and cooking.
How can we keep the rivers clean? Who is responsible for keeping it clean?
The government has taken initiative to keep the Yamuna and Ganga clean with
the Keep the rivers clean. Many people work together to keep the rivers
clean. We should all take part in keeping our water bodies clean.
How we use water…
How water gets polluted….
Chemical waste from Factory
Garbage dumped into rivers
All these factors
affect the water
and make it
contaminated
How water Pollution affects us…
 Polluted water looks and smells Bad.
 Germs, Mosquito Grow in Polluted water
and spread diseases.
Polluted water affects Humans
 Humans can get sick by drinking polluted water.
 Chemicals in the water causes damage to our body organs
 Various diseases like typhoid, cholera etc spread thru polluted water.
 Animals that drink polluted water fall sick and die.
 Many Sea animals eat the plastic thrown into the sea and die
 Some get stuck in the waste thrown and suffer
 Chemicals kill the fishes in the sea.
Polluted water affects Animals….
Polluted water affects Plants….
 Plants die due to the chemicals that are there in the water.
 Plants do not grow
 Fruits and vegetables pick up the chemicals from the soil into them
 Drought , fungal Infection and insects increases.
Ways in which we can avoid polluting water….
Do not thru waste into
the water bodies
Do not thru House
waste and industrial
water into the water
bodies
Do not take bath or
wash clothes with hard
chemicals in the river.
Save water by closing
tap when not in use.
Fix leaking taps.
Why do we need to purify water?
 We need to Purify water to make it safe and fit for drinking.
 We need to kill the germs in it.
 We need to remove the Dust particles in it.
Purifying Water
Ways of Purifying water used by people around the world.
Boiling water kills the germs. We need to filter it with a fine cloth to
remove dirt after boiling
Some People use water filters to purify water.
These filters have layers of SAND, CHARCOAL
and GRAVELS which help to filter the dirt out of
the water
These Tablets kill the germs in the water and make it safe for drinking.
