COIMBRA- 9 OCTOBER 1390
King John I of Castile from the House of Trastámara
has been killed in Alcalá de Henares, a Castilian city.
This means the end of his constant threatening
against the House of Aviz since he invaded Portugal
in the year 1383 up to the Battle of Aljubarrota in
1385. Although, we, the Portuguese army defeated
the Caddtilian army successfully, King John I of
Castile continued fighting with Portuguese soldiers
as a way to enforce his claimto be king by right of his
wife.
Nevertheless, the crisis and the civil war was not
caused by John of Castile. Remembering, this crisis
started when King Ferdinand died without any male
heir, so the Portuguese Succession War broke out.
Ferdinand’s wife, Leonor Telles de Meneses married King John I of Portugal, as a way
of naming he king and joining both crown, the Kingdom of Portugal and the Crown of
Castile. This was not well accepted by the Portuguese citizens, as this meant the loss of
Portuguese independence from Castile. As you already know, French and English
noblemen also claimed the throne but the most important candidate was John of Aviz.
John of Aviz leaded several revolts against Leonor Telles de Meneses.
2. This led to the Battle of Aljubarrota, in which
we have already said John of Portugal
defeated the Castilian plus the French and
English Army. Finally, on 6 April 1383 John
was recognized King of Portugal as John I by
the Cortes of Coimbra.
Although John I of Castile was once and again
defeated by the Portuguese army he did not
surrender and continued fighting for being
king of the Kingdom of Portugal up to today.
The death of King John I of Castile means the
end of the 1383-85 crisis which has affected
many regions in our kingdom. Nevertheless our new king, John I, is promoting the
expansion of the kindom through Africa, which means that we can become a big power
over Europe.
John I of Castile is going to be buried in
the cathedral of the Castilian city of
Toledo.
This 1383-85 Crisis has become a
transition from the House of the
Portuguese Burgundy to the House of
Aviz.
I want a free and a
prosperous Portugal,
without any Castilian
influences.
