Student-centered learning focuses on the needs of students rather than teachers or administrators. It actively engages students in their own learning by encouraging independent thinking, allowing student interests to guide activities, and giving students choices and authentic problems to solve. Students are assessed on demonstrating their understanding in various ways and receive guided support as they monitor their own learning.

How can we learn to blend live, in-class learning between physical and digital spaces? And how can teaching pedagogies adapt to new opportunities? This session will examine how digital advances in classroom learning are creating ‘coalescent spaces’ (White, 2016) in which students are empowered to collaborate through activities, discussion and feedback during class. Teachers also benefit from greater engagement through disrupting passive teaching approaches and being better informed of learner interaction and behaviours. Not only can this establish more engaged communities of learning in class, but it also encourages greater sequencing of learning before, during and after class based on the non-linear affordances of digital spaces.

The focus of this presentation is on developing student autonomy to build learning networks and communities of practice for collaboration, both local and global. We talk about the teacher as a connected and collaborative global learner, but we need to redesign the learning paradigm further to connect students in K-12 more independently with others. The role of the teacher as activator or ‘learning concierge’ for student network building is crucial. Knowledge construction via a non-hierarchical approach means the student must also learn to take responsibility for professional learning modes and not be reliant on the teacher as the conduit.
