The document summarizes an information session about the Rethink Learning Inquiry Hub, an alternative learning program. It introduces the administrators, teachers, and students. It describes inquiry learning as student-driven and focused on creating questions and thoughtful answers. The Inquiry Hub is for passionate learners interested in applying learning practically with technology. A typical day involves topical workshops, online courses, and afternoon inquiry time. Students work on self-directed projects, like one student's project on how music affects driving skills. The program focuses on creating authentic products and tackling real-world issues. It aims to develop competencies like critical thinking through experiences like Shauna's garden project that received grant funding.

The Inquiry Hub - BCSSA 2015 Presentation Dave Truss
The SD43 Inquiry Hub (iHub) is a program of choice for grades 9 to 12 students. It provides an innovative, technology-driven, full-time program which allows students to pursue their own learning questions by shaping the educational experience around their interests instead of structured classes. Despite having a full-time face-to-face school day, the iHub leverages online learning materials creating a blended learning environment where deep learning is achieved through mentorship relationships and independent directed studies (IDS) while gaps in curricular outcomes are addressed through flexible online materials.

The flipped classroom has been used in different ways for the past decade in education, and more recently, the idea of flipping professional development has been experimented with at schools and in corporate training. In both cases, the idea is to rethink what we want to spend our time with in face-to-face sessions and how can we move learning before & after those sessions to be more self-directed. This presentation was paired with a makerspaces session and included an exercise to flip the learning model. Attendees were asked a DIY activity before the face-to-face session.
Examining how coalescent spaces can transform in-class and out of class learningJohn Couperthwaite
How can we learn to blend live, in-class learning between physical and digital spaces? And how can teaching pedagogies adapt to new opportunities? This session will examine how digital advances in classroom learning are creating ‘coalescent spaces’ (White, 2016) in which students are empowered to collaborate through activities, discussion and feedback during class. Teachers also benefit from greater engagement through disrupting passive teaching approaches and being better informed of learner interaction and behaviours. Not only can this establish more engaged communities of learning in class, but it also encourages greater sequencing of learning before, during and after class based on the non-linear affordances of digital spaces.
In this presentation, educators can learn more about what the Genius Hour is and how it can be implemented in grades 2nd to 6th. The presentation includes various links for more information and an overview for educators to present to students for quick implementation with a timeline example.
Moving beyond the assessment portfolio model of "Select, Collect, Connect Reflect, Project" to a maker mindset model, " Explore, Brainstorm, Experiment, Invent, Iterate" Using the portfolio to strengthen creative and critical thinking skills through the Design Thinking model.
Explore how educators can infuse authentic project-based learning into the classroom to promote deeper student thinking and the development of critical life skills. Discover technologies that can help students take ownership of their learning as they demonstrate understanding of content.

What are PODS? They are Personally Owned Devices, and they are already infiltrating our schools. For now they get tucked away in lockers and backpacks, but as the saying goes, “If there is an elephant in the room, introduce it!” Students are bringing small machines with huge potential into our schools. It is time to introduce these tools into our classrooms and also to make sure that we have the knowledge and the infrastructure to use them to their fullest potential.

Abstract
This paper presents a description of the development of the Student Leadership Program at Como Lake Middle School over the past seven years. It investigates what makes student leadership effective in a Middle School, and considers literature pertaining to guiding principles and practices of effective programs. This paper also considers the effectiveness of using metaphors and reflective journals in teaching student leaders. Finally, considering the research synthesis, and upon reflection of the successes and challenges of the Leadership Program at Como Lake Middle, recommendations for improving the program are made.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.
