CHAPTER NINE: DIVERSITY- COMMUNICATION: MAKING
                           RELATIONSHIPS

   1) Look up diversity in a dictionary and select a definition
      - Diversity: the state of fact of being diverse, different, unlikeness, variety,
        multiformity, a point of difference.

   2) Write the definition you selected. How would you expand on the definition?
      - Diversity is different opinions; different cultures together working for the best,
         different races, gender, religion, and beliefs. We are different from each other;
we have our unique personality that’s what makes us diverse.

Now taking into account the Diversity factors: Personality traits; Learning
preferences; Natural talents; Interests, answer the following questions:

   3) What is cultural competence? How can you develop it?
      - Cultural competence is the ability to interact effectively with people from
different countries. Action One: You can develop cultural competence by
valuing diversity, having respect toward the different cultures, treat people as
you wish to be treated, and so have tolerance with the different cultures. All
the cultures in this world are totally different, knowing a little bit of each of the
most important cultures gives you a base to understand a little better how to
treat this people. Action Two: identify and evaluate personal perceptions and
attitudes never judge a person by how they look or religion beliefs. We are not
here to judge anybody; parents tend to teach their child bad manners telling
them for example “not to talk with the guy with black hair” so they are growing
thinking that people with black hair are bad. Fear of difference and experience
a bad situation with person from a specific culture and then we tend to close
all the doors and we don’t give us the opportunity to learn how the rest of the
people from the same culture are. Stereotypes are the biggest problem now
days; we assume the exterior but never the interior. For example a nurse with
tattoos, piercing and red hair doesn’t mean she is evil or she is not going to
do good her job. Act Three: Be aware of what happened when cultures
interact you can learn something from them like a new language, beliefs.
Discrimination has been in the United States since the beginning of the era,
we are humans we all have blood so nobody is different from us. Act Four:
Build cultural knowledge read newspapers about different countries so you
can have a background knowledge, build friendship, ask questions about
traditions and travel!. Action Five: Adapt to diverse cultures look past external
characteristics never judge the outside because you don’t know how they are
inside. Move beyond your feelings met different people of the same culture if
necessary to know them better if you had a bad experience with a person
from this culture, put yourself in others people shoes think about how they
feel if someone treats them bad by how they look or where they are from.
Adjust to cultural differences just how you can adjust to new changes in
Facebook you can also adapted to cultural changes. Climb over language
barriers ask them if they can teach you more about their languages, never
laugh at others when they have a heavy accent speaking English or other
languages. Help others, they will be grateful; stand up against prejudice,
discrimination and hate it doesn’t mean you have to fight but act wisely and
shut these people mouths with wise words. Recognize that people
everywhere have the same basic needs we all eat, breath, love and have
goals. What make us especial are our differences.

4) How can you communicate effectively?
   - You can communicate effectively speaking or adjust to communicating styles.
Thinking communicates by focusing on facts and logic writing messages, e-
mails allowing time to put their ideas in together. Organizing communicates
by focusing on structure and completeness they tend to have a concrete term,
givers communicate by focusing on concern for others they tend to give favor
in person talking with the person. Adventures communicate by focusing on
the present they tend to communicate writing, speaking or giving a concrete
opinion. Put your knowledge of communication styles to use speakers adjust
to listeners and listeners adjust to speakers. Adjust to communication styles
between generations we don’t communicate as our parents do, every
generation is different so is preferable to use a neutral communication style.
Know how to give and take criticism is you are a person who doesn’t like
criticism is preferable that you don’t criticize. But if somebody criticizes you
someday received those words without getting insulted. Understand body
language its preferable to use nonverbal communication so the other person
of different culture don’t get insulted if you show something wrong for the
other person. Act the way you do most of the time.

5) How can you make the most of personal relationships?
   - Good relationships motivates you; use positive relationship strategies,
approach people and conversations with emotional intelligence the better
understanding of your friends’ feelings or relatives better the strength of the
relationship. If you want a friend, be a friend don’t accolade life is too short to
spend it angry. Spend time with people you respect and admire in my case I
prefer to be with my parents which I admire rather than my friends. Work
through tensions is better to solve a problem and express you opinions, take
risks, find a dating pattern that suits you. Plug into communication technology
without losing touch, now we don’t have an excuse of not communicating with
you friends or family. Facebook, Twitter, E-mails we have all kind of ways to
keep in contact with people that you know are going to encouraged you to be
the best. Manage conflict we will never be free of bad situations so learn how
to handle if you are an explosive person better to be apart for 10 minutes
calm down and then talk to the person. Finally avoid destructive relationship
put in priority always your happiness and safety. Your family or friends are
going to be there whenever you want.
