Notes From the Harp
Seasons Change, But God Does Not.
The beginning of Summer reminds me of a person in an argument who slams the door to
exit, only to return exclaiming, “AND ANOTHER THING!” We will have extremely
humid afternoons and still cool brisk mornings. My okra has no idea what to think of the
inconsistency as it hangs on for dear life!
Seasons change, but God does not.
There was a cold night in Israel and Jehoiakim (king of Judah) sat by, warming himself
with strips of paper from a scroll.
“It was the ninth month, and the king was sitting in the winter house, and there was a fire
burning in the fire pot before him. As Jehudi read three or four columns, the king would
cut them off with a knife and throw them into the fire in the fire pot, until the entire scroll
was consumed in the fire that was in the fire pot” (Jeremiah 36:22-23).
The scroll that Jehoiakim turned into kindling was the word of the Lord (Jeremiah 36:1-2).
Ironically, it was concerning the destruction of Judah by fire. God gave Jeremiah the
reason for this scroll:
“It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the disaster that I intend to do to them, so
that everyone may turn from his evil way, and that I may forgive their iniquity and their
sin” (Jeremiah 36:3).
God did not desire to destroy them by fire. He desired that all of the people would repent.
God is still “not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance” (2
Peter 3:9b). However, today, we understand that fire is waiting for all who do not
repent. This fire is unlike the fire that warms us in the winter. It is unlike the fire in
Jehoiakim’s fire pot. It will consume those who disobey eternally. Just two verses before
the 2 Peter 3 passage, we are told:
“But by the same word the heavens and earth that now exist are stored up for fire, being
kept until the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly” (2 Peter 3:7).
May we never take the words of the Lord lightly, nor seek to be warmed by them like
Jehoiakim in our disobedience.
Seasons change, but God does not.
-Richard
