Tomorrow night we will hear gentle knocks on our doors from the boys and girls of our community. They will be exclaiming the same “sweet” phrase: “Trick or Treat.” There are several theories behind why this phrase is used. The earliest recording of it found was in a newspaper article in 1927 out of Alberta, Canada. There are traditions going all the way back to the Celts and the Scots where the custom of sending children door to door was called guising or mumming. The children asked for food, and it was a socially accepted practice. Whether it is knocking at the door for candy or food, each child throughout the ages has experienced the euphoria of anticipation. Waiting to receive a gesture of goodwill from the stranger behind the door. Jesus describes a similar gesture of goodwill whilst waiting at the door. Yet the treat He describes is eternal. “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened” (Matthew 7:7-8). From this, we get the picture of receiving a blessing from God. We cannot receive it unless we seek Him, unless we knock. When I was younger, my cousins lived down the street from a family who gave out regular size Snickers bars every year! We drove across town to go trick or treating with them. They always knew the BEST doors to knock! Jesus goes further to compare the Father’s gifts to the gifts given by men. God’s door offers the BEST treat, hands down. “Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him (Matthew 7:9-11)? When we settle for the gifts of this world, we are simply settling for the trick and have not accessed the treat. God made it possible for us to find Him by sending His Son to your door. “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20). Will you Open the Door? ~Notes from the Harp
