2. Each one of us has had many types of bosses, leaders or
supervisors throughout our lives, especially if you are part
of the corporate world. There are many types of leaders
and they all have different personalities which they show in
their everyday lives.
Being part of a company is like being part of a big family
and you have to deal with the family members no matter
their personalities. Yes, leaders can be great, but leaders
are also human and have their own way of seeing life and
the world. Well, maybe not everybody talks about this, but
everybody knows that our personality is always present in
everything we do, even if we are within a business context.
3. Leaders, even without knowing, show their personalities in
their leadership strategies. Most leaders have very good
behaviors or good personalities which make them natural
leaders. Others have to work hard at getting better and not
letting their feelings get in the way of their leadership
approach.
On the other hand, there are some leaders that have
certain characteristics that just get in the way of a good
leadership strategy. It is not the person to blame. It is
something that just comes naturally, but either way, it
affects all the relationships within a business relationship
context and makes leaders weak and vulnerable. Here are
some of those behaviors that get in the way of leadership
and that certainly make employees lose motivation.
4. Best friend boss
We start with this type of personality as a bad approach to
leadership because it happens very often. Leaders try to
engage and mingle with their employees by becoming best
buddies and this is a huge mistake. In this way leaders don’t
earn respect among their employees, instead, they make
good friends and good friendship relationships and they
forget, or the people they lead forget, that they are within a
business context and that things need to be done and
goals need to be achieved.
What exactly happens when a leader or boss makes good
friends with his or her employees is that it neutralizes the
leader's authority and power. If you think about it, friends
are easier to deal with than a boss.
5. You can sometimes have excuses or lame explanations for
your friends, but not for your boss. If a leader focuses more
on making friends his or her authority will be in danger since
day one. Also, when a leader sees a friend and not a
potential person to lead, his or her objectivity will be
jeopardized and maybe feedback and delegation of
activities can be affected as well.
6. Ethics and leaders.
Ethics are very important for every person and even more
for a leader. Remember we mentioned that a company is
like a big family? Well, imagine seeing your father or mother
cheat, break or dodge the rules or maybe they admit or
engage in behaviors that clearly have a lack of principles.
You will then, in turn, repeat those behaviors or be really
disgusted by them. This category really demotivates and
annoys employees because they understand what they are
facing or how they will be treated in the future.
7. Being unfair
It is very hard to be fair to everybody, everywhere at every
time. In fact in the rush for being fair, many leaders have
mixed the concept of equality with the concept of fairness
in the workplace. For example, if you give the same pay
raise to all the employees in the company, what is more
likely to happen is that the productivity of those that are
considered the best employees will fall down to the level of
an average employee.
It is good to have a system where rewards are important
and can motivate employees, but they have to be
managed in the correct way so they can be fair for
everyone and not send the wrong message.
8. The Disorganized leader
Companies are full of people that lack direction and it is the
leader’s job to give them such direction towards shared
goals. If the leader is not organized enough to give clear
orders or have organized thoughts the chances of
increasing productivity are very low. If leaders don’t have
clear plans and don’t manage them properly his or her
employees will lose their north and start doing random work
as they please which in turn will lead to a decrease in
productivity.
9. The wise guy
And finally, the know-it-all leader. This leader wants to
make sure that everybody knows he or she is in charge and
that they are the smartest person in the room. They think
they always need to be right and have an answer to
everything. This demotivates employees because they will
see in their leader a person that does not accept any
suggestion or any criticism.
