Russian Opera Essay
Russian Opera
The seeds of a distinctively national art music in Russia are usually dated from the first half of the
19th century. The performance of the opera A Life for the Tsar (1836), by Mikhail GLINKA, is
usually cited as the turning point for Russian music (Russia's national anthem is taken from this
opera). In this historical opera, as well as in his subsequent opera Ruslan and Ludmila (1842), the
orchestral fantasy Kamarinskaya (1848), and numerous songs, Glinka successfully fused the typical
melodies, harmonies, and rhythms of Russian folk music with the forms and techniques of Italian
opera –– creating an eclectic but unmistakably national idiom. Glinka's younger contemporary,
Alexander DARGOMYZHSKY, is best known for his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Musorgsky was undoubtedly the most original composer of the Five. Continuing Dargomyzhsky's
search for musical realism, he combined an instinctive flair for the nuances of folk music with
flexible, textually motivated rhythmic practices and unusual harmonic juxtapositions in his many
songs, his operatic masterpiece Boris Godunov (1869–72), and his suite for piano Pictures at an
Exhibition (1874). Although he was misunderstood by many of his contemporaries, Mussorgsky's
legacy has been profoundly important for music in the 20th century. The conspicuous targets of the
nationalists were Aleksandr Serov (1820–71), a prominent music critic, Wagnerite, and opera
composer, and Anton RUBINSTEIN, a legendary piano virtuoso as well as a prolific composer.
Rubinstein and his brother Nikolai (1835–81) were responsible for establishing the first music
conservatories in Russia, founded on German models, in Saint Petersburg (1862) and Moscow
(1866). Peter Ilich TCHAIKOVSKY was one of the first graduates of the former and subsequently
taught at the latter. Without rejecting his national heritage Tchaikovsky evolved a more
cosmopolitan, romantic, yet highly personal style that won him widespread international popularity.
Many of his works––including the six

The Greatest Impacts Of The World On Theology And Government
Two of the greatest impacts one can have on the world are those on theology and government; since
its origin, one's religion had dictated his/her decisions, actions, and basic routines of daily life and a
nation's government affects the many people living under it, controlling them. Historically, these
two areas of impact have been rarely been any less significant. Thus, even in their own times,
medieval German religious leader and founder of the Protestant Church, Martin Luther and ancient
Chinese political philosopher, Confucius were highly influential. In fact, their lives continue to
affect us, today. As of December 2011, about 800,640,000, or 11.6% of the world's population, was
protestant, continuing Luther's legacy. Confucius' philosophy, known as Confucianism and
dominated Chinese beliefs for millennia, ending in its control over politics only with the fall of
imperial China and the birth of the Republic of China. Throughout many other parts of East Asia,
however, Confucianism has in some ways prevailed, being the root of ancestral offerings and
various familial and societal relationships and continues to be taught in many of the region's
schools. Both Confucius and Luther have deeply affected the world, both in their own times and
today. The two men are similar in that sense. They are also similar in having brought new beliefs to
their societies. Despite these similarities, though, Confucius and Luther differ from one another in
one significant way: Luther's

Kurt Vonnegut 's Slaughterhouse Five
I. Introduction
A. Hook
1. PTSD, or post–traumatic stress disorder, is an anxiety disorder that develops in some after they
experience extremely traumatic events, such as combat. Those with PTSD may relive the event via
intrusive memories, flashbacks and nightmares; they would do anything to avoid memories of
trauma, including inventing an alternate planet.
2. Billy, the main character in Kurt Vonnegut's novel Slaughterhouse–Five, experienced firsthand the
trauma of war during the firebombing of Dresden. After this event, Billy created Tramfaladore, the
planet where time does not exist.

b. "A guard would go to the head of the stairs every so often to see what it was like outside, then he
would come down and whisper to the other guars. There was a firestorm out there. Dresden was one
big flame. The one flame ate everything organic, everything that would burn." (Vonnegut 177).
c. Events that are more emotionally difficult are focused on less; instead of time travelling to the
bombing, Billy remembers it (Harris). This makes the traumatic event less immediate, allowing for
distance between the horrors of war and the present.
3. Non–linear fashion of SHV
a. No specific climax or chronological order: events do not follow the traditional 'linear' fashion of
novel.
1. Time is not a linear progression of events, but a constant condition: "All moments, past, present,
and future, all have existed and always will." → Tralfamadorian principle
2. The Tralfamadorians provide Billy with the concept of nonlinear time, which becomes the
foundation for a mode of living (Vanderwerken).
3. "I am a Tralfamadorian, seeing all time as you might see a stretch of the Rocky Mountains. All
time is all time. It does not change. It does not lend itself to warnings or explanations. It simply is.
Take it moment by moment, and you will find that we are all, as I've said before, bugs in amber."

Insanity of War in Slaughterhouse Five
Slaughterhouse–Five, by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., is the tale of a gawky World War II veteran/soldier,
Billy Pilgrim. His wartime experiences and their effects lead him to the ultimate conclusion that war
is unexplainable. To portray this effectively, Vonnegut presents the story in two dimensions:
historical and science–fiction. The irrationality of war is emphasized in each dimension by contrasts
in its comic and tragic elements. The historical seriousness of the Battle of the Bulge and the
bombing of Dresden are contrasted by many ironies and dark humor; the fantastical, science–
fiction–type place of Tralfamadore is, in truth, an outlet for Vonnegut to show his incredibly serious
fatalistic views. The surprising variations of the seriousness ... Show more content on

One soldier dies from the dry heaves after being forced to work in a rotting corpse mine. Ironically,
this man has survived the bombing of Dresden, yet dies from the smell of others who died in the
bombing. Eventually, the corpse mines are closed because of the horrendous conditions, and the war
ends. The book ends as Billy is walking out of the slaughterhouse after gaining his freedom and he
notices is that, "Birds were talking. One bird said to Billy Pilgrim, "Poo–tee–weet?'" The bird's
cameo in the story reinforces the idea that there is nothing to say about an unnecessary massacre as
in Dresden, and that war is illogical, like the bird's words. This is ironic, since the theme of the
novel, which should be the clearest message derived from the story, is summed up in the incoherent
words of a bird. All these incidences of irony show senselessness and coincidence, with undertones
of dark humor. [In questioning why the incidences of the novel occur, it is impossible to give a
logical explanation.] This parallels the idea that war is nonsense, senseless, full of coincidence, and
is unexplainable. As a result of the trauma of Billy's war experience, he faces an inability to deal
with reality later in his life. The fantastical Tralfamadore is a planet where Billy escapes to when he
feels life's stresses; however mad Billy seems to have become, Tralfamadore doubles to reveal
Vonnegut's earnest fatalistic views. Tralfamadore is the

Kurt Vonnegut 's Slaughterhouse Five
Irrational behavior is a huge part of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse–five because Billy Pilgrim's
character and the plot line are shaped by it throughout the book. The spastic ordering of his life story
and the thorough belief that he was abducted by Tralfamadorian aliens are what shape this book's
story and Billy's way of life. Although unreasonable, his behavior can be considered justified
because of the time he spent in World War II. Post–traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, is common in
veterans and, in Billy's case, very serious. Billy is not at fault for the reaction his brain has to certain
situations or that he suffers from flashbacks, sleep complications, and emotional numbness. PTSD is
responsible for and justify Billy's delusions and aberrant behavior. The abduction of Billy Pilgrim by
the Tralfamadorians is a hallucination that could be a way to escape a world destroyed by war. Billy
escapes there when he is stressed, from his experiences of war on earth. It's a haven in the midst of
all the madness around him. These aliens are what makes another world so intriguing, what get Billy
out of our world that is plagued by war. This is justifiable because war is an awful experience and
who wouldn 't want an escape from the constant death, injury, and fighting. Billy gets into Kilgore
Trout's books before he even shows signs of PTSD. The books are already infused in his brain and
Billy's fantasies becomes his reality when he starts to have hallucinations. He

find that there is none. The story doesn't morally make any sense, and thats the conclusion Vonnegut
is trying to guide the reader towards.
The literary criticism of 'Slaughterhouse Five' and the Comforts of Indifference, written by Barry
Chabot is a critical essay that explores deeper into the meaning behind the eccentric story of Billy
Pilgrim, and its creator Kurt Vonnegut. Billy Pilgrim's indifference is an extension of Vonnegut
attempting to come to terms with the violent nature of man. However this "comfort" is suggested to
be "cruelly inadequate" and described to be an "opiate of the terminally weary", (Chabot n.p.) and
that the solace Billy Pilgrim finds in indifference only serves to help accommodate him to the
atrocities of the world rather than standing up to them.
Even though the bombing of Dresden is evidence enough of the destruction brought about by war
Vonnegut "makes references to the concentration camps, the destruction of European Jewry, the
bombing of Hiroshima, and behind them, as if to insist that such murderousness is no historical
anomaly, to the children 's crusades of another era."(Chabot n.p.) Beyond the violence caused by
humans is the inevitable coming of death whether violence is present or not. "Vonnegut 's father died
of natural causes, not at the hands of others." In addition "Edgar Derby is never mentioned without
reference to the fact that he is to be executed for stealing a teapot, an event which is not finally
narrated until the final

Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut
The author Kurt Vonnegut characterizes the structure of his novel, Slaughterhouse–Five, as
schizophrenic. The novel jumps to and from fragmented clumps of information without accordance
to traditional chronological order. The unique jumpy structure and the representation of time
exemplified by this structure transcend simply commenting on the senselessness of massacre and
war. The schizophrenic representation of time experienced by Billy Pilgrim challenges the
traditional American narrative presented in cause and effect relationships: this challenge serves to
critique the alienation and isolation perpetuated by American society as the root of terrible tragedies
including massacres. The representation of time mimics the concept of time held by the alien species
the Tralformadorians challenging American arrogance that societal norms equal fundamental truths.
Tralformadorians read novels as a series of telegraph–like blocks of language void of any relation
besides that the author chose to group them together. When read together all at once these blocks of
language depict a life that is deep and beautiful. Fragments of Billy Pilgrim's life complied together
without chronological order represent a manifestation of the Tralformadorian concept of time.
Tralformadorian time diverges completely from the traditional and linear western narrative which
focuses on cause and effect relationships. The alienation and sadness Billy experiences no longer
stand as simply a product of

Views on War in Vonnegut's Slaughter House Five
Many people returned from World War II with disturbing images forever stuck in their heads. Others
returned and went crazy due to the many hardships and terrors faced. The protagonist in Slaughter–
House Five, Billy Pilgrim, has to deal with some of these things along with many other
complications in his life. Slaughter House Five (1968), by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., is an anti–war novel
about a man's life before, after and during the time he spent fighting in World War II. While Billy is
trying to escape from behind enemy lines, he is captured and imprisoned in a German
slaughterhouse. The author tells of Billy's terrible experiences there. After the war, Billy marries and

The author writes of many different human beings, showing that each one thinks war is ultimately,
the worst thing. While in the war, Billy is in the hospital during his imprisonment by the Germans.
There is an old general there who was a teacher before joining in the war efforts. One day, in a
conversation with Billy and another older man in the hospital, the general starts to talk about what
he thinks of the war. He says, "You know–– we've had to imagine the war here, and we have
imagined that it was being fought by aging men like ourselves. We had forgotten that wars were
fought by babies. When I saw those freshly shaved faces, it was a shock. "'My God, my God––––' I
said to myself, 'It's the Children's Crusade'" (p. 106). This general feels that war is nothing but
babies being murdered by one another. He is disturbed by the thought of war and the fact that so
many young people are dying for its cause. Billy, the protagonist of this novel, also has bitter
feelings about war. While he is in the zoo on the planet of Tralfamadore, he is able to communicate
with the aliens. In a conversation with them, he says that he is from a planet "that has been engaged
in senseless slaughter since the beginning of time" (p. 116). This "senseless slaughter" that he is
referring to is war. Billly himself was in the war, but obviously thinks that there is no reason for it

Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky Essay
Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky was born into a wealthy family as a child. His family owned a lot of
land, and was very successful. Mussorgsky was born on March 9th, 1839. In Karevo, Russia. He
was a very fortunate person to grow up to be a musician. Music ran in his family his mother Yuliah
Chrikova was an expert at the piano. As for Mussorgsky's father he also was skilled in piano,
however, he did it as more of a hobby. Mussorgsky's father being a large land owner in this time
period he owned a lot of slaves which were known as serfs However, Mussorgsky being so young he
probably did not know about them. While his mother did it as a profession. His mother taught
Mussorgsky and his siblings at a very young age how to play the piano. She was also very good at
poetry as a side hobby. At the age of seven Mussorgsky was performing at public events. He was

I know this was not the case for his entire lifetime, but for the beginning of it up to a certain point
that is how it was even though that wasn't his choice. I found it very interesting that he grew up with
parents that were fully supportive of his musical passions because there are a lot of people who did
not have that luxury. There are a ton of musicians who had to convince their parents that music was
a passion worth supporting, some of which never succeeded. Mussorgsky seemed like a really nice
guy to be around. I found it very interesting that he started learning piano at such a young age from
his mother who was a piano teacher. I found it interesting that he wasn't always into music from the
beginning it wasn't the only thing he ever did. He joined a regiment for the military and served in it
for quite some time. I like how important his family was to him for example as soon as his mother
began to get sick he went straight to live with her and was by her bedside until she passed

The Impact Of Science Fiction in Our Life:...
The Impact Of Science Fiction
Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse–Five brilliantly illustrates how being in combat traumatically
affects soldiers in time of war. Indeed, the author uses science fiction and the creative use of time
travel as a mold to bring about his true feelings towards war, thus making Slaughterhouse–Five a
quintessential anti–war book. Vonnegut's usage of science fiction creates an outlet to the planet of
Tralfamadore where Billy is able to escape his mental damage from war.
The author, Kurt Vonnegut, saw much battle in his days of combat. He begins, not as Billy Pilgrim,
but as Kurt Vonnegut, explaining his personal war experiences. He writes in first person to give the
reader a primary source of what it was like to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The famous line, "Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time" (Vonnegut 23), explains how Billy is not
stuck in the same day as the rest of the world, rather he was traveling back in time to the war.
Escaping into the science fiction world was the best way for Vonnegut to express himself. This
brought joy to Kurt Vonnegut as he realized he was able to get his story of war at Dresden out. It is
explained that, "he can talk about why he was writing this book and the difficulties involved"
(MacFarlane), it was the only way to get his feelings down on paper without reliving his horrific
memories. He used this creative writing style to leave, "the delusion or escape fantasy of a character
who is unable to live with the reality...(Bényei). Therefore, Vonnegut geniusly created the alter ego
of Billy Pilgrim, and the fictional planet of Tralfamadore.
Due to the fact that Billy Pilgrim is essentially Kurt Vonnegut, it is indicated that Billy faces much
depression and misery. Since depression and misery are very pessimistic traits, Billy goes into the
fantasy world. He escapes to the planet of Tralfamadore. After the war "when he was abducted by
the Tralfamadorians..." (Vonnegut 75) Billy became unchained, escaping from the generic world
around him. At that point in time Billy starts to see life in a very offbeat way. Instead of having
recurring thoughts of war, "Billy finds meaning and importance in some aspects of life"

George Roy Hill's Movie Adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's...
George Roy Hill's movie adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's novel Slaughter–house Five is a fairly
accurate version that stays relatively close to Vonnegut's own vision. Throughout Vonnegut novel
Billy Pilgrim, a WWII soldier who was captured by the Germans and held captive as an American
POW (prisoner of war), demonstrates several extreme compulsive tendencies due to the horrific
events he witnessed as an American POW victim. After reading of Billy's experiences, I did not have
faith in the movies ability to accurately present Vonnegut's own personal feelings. On the contrary,
after seeing George Hill's movie adaptation of Slaughter–house Five, I felt that the he did an
extremely nice job in keeping with what Vonnegut had intended to be seen ... Show more content on

Hill is able to achieve this by making Billy the only fragment of black on an all–white background.
This helps to set Billy apart from the rest of the screen and in essence isolates him as the only person
around. While I felt the director did a good job of conveying the novel as accurately as possible, just
as in other move adaptations, there were some inaccuracies and discrepancies from one medium to
the other. One aspect of the movie that really stood out for me was the abduction scene. In the
movie, Pilgrim is captured by the alien creatures from inside his bedroom; a white ball of light
slowly intensifies until it engulfs the entire screen and after a quick cutaway we find Billy on
Tralfamadore. This was not the way Vonnegut describes Billy's abduction in the book. He was not
merely sitting in his bedroom with his dog Spot, instead he had been watching a war movie, and
then he walks outside to allow Spot to go to the bathroom. It is at this point, when Billy is outside,
that the aliens come and capture him. Billy's war experience is also very difference from the novel,
the bombing of Dresden is the best example of this. Vonnegut describes the aftermath by saying,
"the once beautiful city [looked] like the surface of the moon" (Vonnegut). I envisioned a different
scene when reading the book than what was translated onto the big screen. In my opinion, the city
appears no different than any other city that has just been bombed. Perhaps I

Breakfast of Champions Essay
Breakfast of Champions When one hears the phrase "Breakfast of Champions," he envisions a
grinning picture of Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan slam dunking, or Dale Earnhardt in a racecar on a
box of Wheaties, a popular breakfast cereal. A few avid Saturday Night Live fans might recall a skit
performed by James Belushi. In the skit, Belushi's "Breakfast of Champions" was beer, cigarettes,
and donuts. Neither of these examples are the subject of Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions or
Good Bye Blue Morning. A "Breakfast of Champions" is actually a martini.

Kilgore cleans–up and travels down to the cocktail lounge, where he would soon meet Dwayne

demands for Kilgore to give him the message. Hoover snatches Now It Can Be Told, one of
Kilgore's novels, from the table. The book says that there is only one being with free will, "everyone

He begins attacking people in the lounge. He bites off Kilgore's middle finger. Hoover leaves the
hotel and attacks the people he meets outside until he is placed in a mental hospital. After Kilgore
leaves the hospital, he meets Philboyd Sludge, who reveals that he is Kilgore's creator. Philboyd

and freedom. He describes Christopher Columbus as a white sea pirate who discovers a

Slaughterhouse Five By Kurt Vonnegut
Slaughterhouse–five Kurt Vonnegut combines satire, imagery and an anecdotal style to talk about
complex issues such as science, religion, sex, socialism, pacifism and tradition. He used his writing
to convey messages and warnings to society about these issues. Slaughterhouse–five is one of his
most well known novels. In this novel Vonnegut uses fiction to portray shadowy truths about human
nature. Billy pilgrim is the main focus of Slaughterhouse–five; through him and other characters
Vonnegut portrays his beliefs about free will and predestination. He is strongly anti–war; this is
present right from the start of the novel. In Slaughterhouse–five Vonnegut uses Billy as a warning to
society about having the belief that everything is predetermined and therefore inevitable. Vonnegut
wants his readers to think independently and question all the beliefs of the world. One of the major
themes that emerge in Slaughterhouse–five is from Vonnegut's own anti–war feelings. In the
opening chapter of the novel Vonnegut writes in his own voice about his personal experience
witnessing the firebombing of Dresden in Eastern Germany during World War II as a prisoner of
war. This event was pivotal in shaping his feeling and view of war. In this chapter Vonnegut is
having a discussion with Bernard O'Hare a wartime friend and tells him "there is nothing intelligent
to say about a massacre" (Vonnegut 19). Bernard's wife Mary is also a part of this conversation.
Mary fears that Vonnegut is going

Adolf Hitler And Martin Luther Of Germany
Topic: Can we obtain a peaceful, ordered life? Should we even bother trying? If so, how?
Adolf Hitler of Germany: Martin Luther of Germany:
Argument: No it is impossible. Argument: Yes it is possible.
Today we have two great and influential people debating an incredibly controversial topic. Adolf
Hitler and Martin Luther are both German citizens during a time of conflict, however that is where
the similarities end. Luther, who was born in 1483 lived in a very different world from Hither. To
Luther, the conflict was focused primarily around religion and basic human rights. These conflicts
resulted in small scale battles and wars. Hitler's conflict was based on power and control. Religion
was no longer the most controversial subject. This conflict, combined with modern weaponry and
tactics, produced an incredibly deadly war: World War II. Luther was best known for being
outspoken against the corrupt Catholic church. Hitler was best known for murdering six million
Jews. Both influential people have interesting opinions to share on peace.
Argument of Martin Luther Indeed, it is possible to achieve a peaceful and orderly life. A peaceful
and orderly life can be achieved by learning obedience and fear of god through Lutheranism. This
life can only be rendered if some elemental requirements are fulfilled. The first of these
requirements is that there must be a general, universal, feeling of happiness. Secondly, there must be
a widely practiced goal that can be worked towards

Kurt Vonnegut 's ' Slaughterhouse Five, Billy Pilgrim...
In today's world we question the problem of free will and it's understanding. Is the nature of
humanity characterized by the ability to chose for oneself or through our understanding of physical
laws. Is there any room for individuality when and if the world operates under these fundamental
laws or whether God has already created a "path" for us to follow? When this question comes up
people tend to want to forget about it. Kurt Vonnegut abjects this illusion of free will in his novel by
his use in 'characters' and having free will. In Slaughterhouse–five, Billy Pilgrim question the
Tralfamadorians, "Why me?" Their response is simply, "...There is no why." The Tralfamodorians
exemplify the role of "the other" that marks free will as a distinctly a human characteristic. Billy
use's this as a means to cope with the reality that pain and suffering is a guarantee. Vonnegut
repetition of the phrase "So it goes" , supports that free will is question with no answer and
desensitizes the major suffering and deaths throughout the novel. All of the events in his life were
simply uncontrollable and he was able to travel throughout various events in his life easily. In
Chapter One the narrator is speaking with movie–maker, Harrison Starr, about the book he plans to
write about World War II. Starr, compares writing an anti–war book to writing an anti–glacier book.
Harrison stated, "...Why don't you write an anti–glacier book instead?" This comparison is stating

Local Issues In Congress
In today's government, a major issue involves members of Congress focusing all of their time and
resources on re–election. This causes the Congress to focus on the desires and needs of their
constituents while potentially ignoring necessary projects and laws that could benefit the entire
nation. This, in effect, results in wasted funding and an inefficient Congress. I am a strong believer
that the members of Congress need to focus on the national issues rather than local issues that
dictate re–election. The state and local governments are in place to pass laws and ensure that the
local communities are being represented in a correct manner. Members of Congress focusing on
these local issues drives the "need" for pork–barreling. There are potential ... Show more content on

These members of Congress are focused on spending federal funding on companies or people that
would result in benefiting themselves. The members of Congress that stay within the confines of
Congress for decades may be involved with corruption with no recourse for their actions. This is
because the incumbent party has an advantage over the rivaling party on the premise that they are
already in office. One of the main examples of this can be seen in the Keating Five in the late
1980's. Five senators, who were given donations by Charles Keating, "influenced a regulatory
agency on behalf of Keating's savings and loan institution, which was under investigation" (Otteson
1991). These senators were dealt no punishment, while two of the senators were actually re–elected.
This not only displays the potential corruption, but also shows how strong the incumbent party is
when facing elections. If term limits were enacted, these men would have not been able to be re–
elected and new senators could have taken their positions. . This ability for change in the members
of Congress can bring about new ideals and outlooks onto common issues that the country faces
today. In addition to the new ideals, the changing of Congress will allow for the constituents to
develop more of an interest in the government affairs. With new candidates, "people will be forced

Essay on Tralfamadore- Truth or Imagination?
Can troublesome war experiences really play a role in causing hallucinations? A hallucination is a
sensory experience of something that does not exist outside of one's mind. An individual who suffers
from hallucinations is Billy Pilgrim. Billy, a person who can supposedly time travel, jumps between
his time on the alien planet Tralfamadore, his experiences during World War II, and his captivity in a
German prison camp. His hallucinations may have been caused by the airplane crash that damaged
his brain. He believes that there is a planet named Tralfamadore, far from Earth, and that he has

Furthering the resemblance between Billy's hallucinations and The Big Board, a girl is also
kidnapped and taken to planet Tralfamadore. She is a woman named Montana Wildhack, who is also
displayed in a zoo, naked, and is forced to mate with Billy. Billy's imagination appears to be coming
right out of the book because his experiences on Tralfamadore mirror what happens to the people in
the book. Also he reads a lot of Kilgore Trout books and they are all about science fiction and aliens.
Just like Zircon–212, Tralfamadore is not because Billy remembers what he has read in Kilgore
Trout's books and makes it into his reality.
Billy not only consumes the plot from Kilgore Trout books but also uses his personal experiences to
trigger Tralfamadore. Billy's similarities between his personal experiences and his life at
Tralfamadore question the existence of that planet. People, when they go to war, return with very
disturbing memories. Since Billy went to war, one could see that he makes a getaway from the
horrors of war by letting his thoughts run desolate and creating a fictional planet named
Tralfamadore. One time is when he was kidnapped and he was "introduced to an anesthetic to put
him to sleep" (77). As soon as he fell asleep he felt the acceleration of the saucer as it left Earth and

The Mighty Handful
The Mighty Handful
During nineteenth century, there were five major players who worked together to establish the
unique and distinct sound that is Russian classical music. Mily Balakirev, Cesar Cui, Modest
Mussorgsky, Nikolai Rimsky–Korsakov and Alexander Borodin. The five composers all lived in
Saint Petersburg, Russia, and worked together to created amazing works of music from 1856 to
1870. The Mighty Handful got their name from an article entitled Mr. Balakirev's Slavic Concert, by
acclaimed critic Vladimir Stasov which was a concert that was performed for visiting Slavic
delegates in May 1867 at the All–Russian Ethnographical Exhibition" in Moscow, Russia. The four
Russian composers whose worked were featured at the concert were Mikhail Glinka, Alexander
Dargomyzhsky, Mily Balakirev, and Nikolai Rimsky–Korsakov. The article itself ended with the
statement that lead to be named "The Mighty Handful" "God grant that our Slav guests may never
forget today's concert; God grant that they may forever preserve the memory of how much poetry,
feeling, talent, and intelligence are possessed by the small but already might handful of Russian
musicians." The group started off as a twosome in 1856 with Balakirev and Cui. The rest of the
group started slowly forming starting with Mussorgsky in 1857, Rimsky–Korsakov in 1861, and
then Borodin in 1862. All the composers were young, self–trained amateurs who had other careers
that combined their careers and their love of music.

The Movie ' Slaughter House Five '

The Reality of Warfare During February 1945, World War II had long begun, affecting millions of
people throughout the entire world. Disease and famine were faced by both civilians and soldiers,
and the casualties were about 80 million. Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughter House–Five mostly takes place
during the war, specifically during the time of the infamous Dresden bombing. The main character,
Billy Pilgrim, is an American soldier who lived to tell, and was present during, the bombing. It is
through Billy Pilgrim's personal story that Vonnegut thoroughly reveals the harshness of war and its
long term effects. Typically the reaction people exhibit after hearing about a death is ... Show more

He makes the harsh idea that death really is, sound like it's inevitable, and so there is no reason to
mourn. Just like death, war is also harsh. The tone most people have when speaking about war, is the
same tone Billy has regarding deaths. They disregard so many important things that come with war,
the millions of dollars spent, the tragic amount of deaths and most deaths being civilians who are
completely innocent. They speak like if war were inevitable and there was nothing anyone could do
about it. In the novel, Vonnegut gives an example, "What he meant, of course, was that there would
always be wars, that they were as easy to stop as glaciers."(Vonnegut 3). Although this is true, it
does not take away from the harsh reality that war really is. What is very ironic is the fact that Billy
Pilgrim's harsh mentality about deaths is so easily noticed, yet people have not yet noticed the
harshness that war really is, and in reality; war and death go hand in hand. Vonnegut uses "so it
goes" in a way to almost mimic the majority of the population who are so oblivious to what war
really is. The entire point of the book is to bring attention to how harsh war genuinely is, and that is
why the words are so constantly being repeated, so that people make the connection that war brings
death, and since death is harsh, so is war. Today video games about war make millions

Rhetorical Devices In Speech To The Redfern Speech
Undoubtedly it is through the form and content of a text that authors communicate universal values
in light of the contextual experiences of their time
By utilising rhetoric, convincing speakers are able to portray the unjust human experience of their
context captivating the audience expounding values such as peace, unity and justice. Anwar Sadat's
"Speech to the Israeli Knesset" and Paul Keating's "Redfern Speech" reinforce the significance of
injustice within their societies, prompting for social change. By engaging the audience through
rhetoric devices these speeches evoke a personal response from the audience, transforming the
practices and perspectives of their audience, bringing to the fore universal values in the light of their
present contextual discriminations.
Through intellectual and rhetoric qualities, intuitive responses are able to provoke social change. In
1977 on the 20th of November Anwar Sadat's radical 'Speech to the Israeli Knesset' emphasised
achieving justice on fair terms, ultimately establishing a basis for international peace and "Peace in
the Middle East" during the tense Arab–Israeli conflict. Sadat utilises various devices of repetition to
reinforce the main thematic concern of "permanent peace and justice", expounding Logos through
the immense detailed when laying out the conditions for peace. Moreover, as both countries were
highly religious Sadat utilises the Pathos of religion to unite individuals, "Muslims, Christians and

Breakfast of Champions: Life With Others Essay
Breakfast of Champions: Life With Others
For anyone who has ever wondered what the meaning of life is, it is to be the eyes and ears of the
Creator of the Universe, if one believes Kurt Vonnegut's Breakfast of Champions (1973).
In Breakfast of Champions the protagonist, Kilgore Trout, is a lonely science fiction writer who
lives in a hole in the dredges of New York City. His only work published was "to give bulk to books
and magazines of salacious pictures" ( 21). Finally catching his break, Trout is invited to the
Midland City Arts Festival, home of Dwayne Hoover. Hoover, who is a wealthy car salesman, owns
a share of virtually everything in Midland City. However, Hoover is on the brink of insanity at this
time and is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Hoover said such punishing words, Harry thought his secret was out and the humiliation
would be unbearable. "Harry LeSabre, meanwhile, had been destroyed by Dwayne... Harry closed
his eyes. He never wanted to open them again. His heart sent a message to his molecules: 'For
reasons obvious to us all, this galaxy is dissolved'" (113). Uninformed about how hurtful his words
were, Hoover went on oblivious to the destruction his words had inflicted on Harry's life.
Another example of Vonnegut's discouraging views is when the inherent fears of urban individuals
are collectively focused on a fictitious entity in an incident involving Kilgore Trout. "He looked
over his shoulder, perceived that they were being followed...The next thing that he knew, he was on
his hands and knees on a handball court underneath the Queensboro Bridge...His money was gone.
His parcels were scattered around him" (75). The police find him and transport him to the station for
questioning. They ask about the culprits. Trouts response is, " 'For all I know the car may have been
occupied by intelligent gas from Pluto...Trout said this so innocently, but his comment turned out to
be the first epidemic of mind–poisoning" (76). When the reporters got a hold of the information they
caused a city–wide panic . Everyone was in fear of this so called Pluto Gang, when in fact they were
just a bad case of gossip. "So New Yorkers, who had so many nameless terrors, were easily taught

Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov : A Russian Poet
Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky–Korsakov was a Russian composer, conductor, teacher, and naval
officer during the nineteenth century. A talented pianist, Rimsky–Korsakov wrote works such as
operas, choral and chamber music throughout the course of his life. He greatly impacted Russian
classical music, particularly with his incredible use of word painting. According to scholarly author
Zoran Minderovic, "Rimsky–Korsakov's music is accessible and engaging owing to his talent for
tone–coloring and brilliant orchestration. Furthermore, his operas are masterful musical evocations
of myths and legends." One of his most well–known works, "Flight of the Bumblebee," displays his
talent of text painting perfectly. The piece went down in history as one of the most recognizable
compositions in the world. Rimsky–Korsakov was born in Tikhvin, Russia in 1844. He did not
always have a significant interest in music. As a child, he took piano lessons, but he chose to follow
in the footsteps of his brother and pursue a career in the Navy. While attending the Naval College at
St. Petersburg, Korsakov still committed his free time to practicing piano and composition. In fact,
he composed his very first symphony on a navy ship. Once he graduated naval school, he became a
professor of orchestration and composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, which is known today
as the "Rimsky–Korsakov Conservatory" in his honor. Here, he taught many composers that

Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five -- A Great American Novel
For a novel to be considered a Great American Novel, it must contain a theme that is uniquely
American, a hero that is the essence of a great American, or relevance to the American people.
Others argue, however, that the Great American Novel may never exist. They say that America and
her image are constantly changing and therefore, there will never be a novel that can represent the
country in its entirety. In his novel, Slaughterhouse–Five, Kurt Vonnegut writes about war and its
destructiveness. Vonnegut tells the story of Billy Pilgrim, an unlikely hero, mentally scarred by
World War Two. Kurt Vonnegut explains how war is so devastating it can ruin a person forever.

Pilgrim recalled that the guards resembled a barbershop quartet as they "experimented with one
expression and then another, saying nothing though their mouths were often open" (Vonnegut 227).
The night of February 13th to the morning of February 14th, 1945, Billy Pilgrim endured the
firebombing of Dresden, which has come to be known as one of the worst bombings in history.
More than 135,000 people were killed in the bombing and Pilgrim, along with a small group that
took refuge in a meat locker, was one the few survivors of the bombing. Upon emerging, Billy
Pilgrim and the soldiers discovered that "everybody in the city was supposed to be dead, regardless
of what they were, and that anybody that moved represented a flaw in the design" (Vonnegut 180).
The city of Dresden was compared to "the moon..., nothing but minerals" (Vonnegut 227). Even
after the firebombing, the survivors were still surrounded in death–their method of transportation
being a "coffin shaped wagon" (Vonnegut 278). The firebombing might have been the event that
created the most damage for Billy Pilgrim and began his downward spiral into escape from reality.
Pilgrim also created an alternate world called Tralfamadore where death, free will, and time do not
exist. Billy hid in this world and was able to convince himself that the beliefs of the small, alien

The Slaughterhouse Five Novel By Kurt Vonnegut
The Slaughterhouse Five novel, is a fictional and nonfictional delight all clashed into one. The
author, Kurt Vonnegut, amazingly combines a fictional character's life with the nonfictional
influence of what Kurt himself had experienced. As well as major topics being debated on and dealt
with today. Billy Pilgrim takes hold of the story's main protagonist as a prisoner of war during the
Dresden raids in eastern Germany. While reading, I found many relationships in the novel to
common concerns, such as time and death; too correlated opinions from other anti–war enthusiasts.
Particularly, time, is the main motive behind the life of Billy Pilgrim. Over the course of the book

But Billy can see his birth and death! Sure, some of our moms recorded our birth, but what if we
could see our death! I can not fathom watching myself die, when I think about death I pray it is fast
and peaceful. Only time will tell if my prayer will be heard. Similar to time, is death, Billy
experienced a lot of this during the war. Death was on a regular basis throughout Billy's life. "...Billy
uncorked it with his thumbs. It didn't make a pop. The champagne was dead. So it goes"(Vonnegut
93). Obviously champagne isn't a big deal for us, but what about this passage, "Only the candles and
the soap were of German origin. They had ghostly, opalescent similarity. The British had no way of
knowing it, but the candles and the soap were made from the fat of rendered Jews and Gypsies and
fairies and communists, and other enemies of the State. So it goes"(Vonnegut 122). I was saddened
by this, I did not know the Germans had done this, It reminds me of the Nazi concentration camps.
Resulting in the Holocaust, costing the lives of over 6 million enemies, or Jews, of the state. From
my high school textbooks I remember that most Jews ran most of the banks in Germany before the
war, eventually the Depression would hit and I wouldn't doubt that the Jews were blamed falsely. I

Influential Russian Composers: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Influential Russian Composers When asked to name a countries that influenced both classical and

Not many people think of Russia as a major contributor to the development of music. However,
modern music and pop culture as we know it today would not be the same without the major
accomplishments of many Russian composers. For instance, everyone has heard of Pyotr Ilyich

the music of this ballet is almost impossible. He also composed many other famous pieces that still

Analysis Of The Movie ' The Inside Job '
Any author or screenwriter wants to have an attention grabbing title. One that will intrigue you or
captivate your thoughts. Also, the title should be something that reflects what the book or movie will
be about. Charles Ferguson, Adam Bolt, and Chad Beck have all succeeded with these criteria in
their screenplay, the Inside Job. The Inside Job is truly about an inside job that included many
government employees and Wall Street workers. Of course, you can decide for yourself if these
people do what the documentary shows they did. As for me, the evidence is overwhelming. After a
short introduction, the film starts out with the date of the stock market crash, September 15, 2008.

This turned into a crisis which cost tax payers about $124 billion and many people their life savings.
One inside job that occurred in the 1980s involved Charles Keating. The documentary briefly
touches on this subject, but I decided to delve a little deeper into the matter in order to see if it was
truly worth mentioning. Lincoln Savings and the Keating Five was overtaken by the American
Continental Corporation. Before Keating became in power, the company was regulated well. Then,
when Keating began his reign, he fired all of the current management. Red flag right there. Since the
deregulation began in the beginning of the decade that allowed savings and loan companies to make
higher risk investments, loan operators took advantage of them. Take a guess at who was one of
those people. Yes, Charles Keating. With Keating at the front, Lincoln's Assets skyrocketed from
$1.1 billion to $5.5 billion. Then, in 1985, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB) finally
thought that maybe, just maybe, the savings industry's ignorance to riskiness was exposing the
government's insurance funds to huge losses. They instituted a few rules that they believed would
help the situation. Just a year later after these rules were implemented, Lincoln was under
investigation. The San Francisco office of the FHLBB began to audit Lincoln. By the end of that
year, the FHLBB had found that Lincoln had indeed been

Great American Authors: Kurt Vonnegut
Kurt Vonnegut
When people are asked to name great American authors names come up like Mark Twain, Harriet

destructiveness of war and cannot really be taught like Uncle toms Cabin where that book showed

Slaughterhouse-Five: Futile Search for Meaning Essay
Critics often suggest that Kurt Vonnegut's novels represent a man's desperate, yet, futile search for
meaning in a senseless existence. Vonnegut's novel, Slaughterhouse–Five, displays this theme. Kurt
Vonnegut uses a narrator, which is different from the main character. He uses this technique for
several reasons.
Kurt Vonnegut introduces Slaughterhouse Five in the first person. In the second chapter, however,
this narrator changes to a mere bystander. Vonnegut does this for a specific reason. He wants the
reader to realize that the narrator and Billy Pilgrim, the main character, are two different people. In

Pilgrim," said the loudspeaker. "Any questions?"
Billy licked his lips, thought a while, inquired
at last: "Why me?"
"That is a very Earthling question to ask, Mr.
Pilgrim. Why you? Why us for that matter? Why anything?
Because this moment simply is. Have you ever seen bugs
trapped in amber?'
"Yes." Billy, in fact, had a paperweight in his
office which was a blob of polished amber with three
lady–bugs embedded in it.
"Well, here we are, Mr. Pilgrim, trapped in the
amber of this moment. There is no why" (Vonnegut, p.76–77).
This kind–of off the wall opinion can be interpreted as people being physically stuck in this world,
that people don't have any choice over what mankind as a whole, do and what people head for. The
only thing one can do is think about everything, but it won't affect anything. This idea appears many
times throughout the novel. This is one of the examples, when Billy proposes marriage to Valencia:
Billy didn't want to marry ugly Valencia. She was one of the symptoms of his disease. He knew he
was going crazy when he heard himself proposing marriage to her, when he begged her to take the
diamond ring and be his companion for life (Vonnegut, p.107).
This excerpt directly shows that Billy didn't like Valencia very much and that he actually didn't want
to marry her.

Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies By Seth Holmes
When thinking of Mexican American immigrants what comes to mind? The American public
consistently listens to the media telling stories of how these people cross the border illegally, which
is deemed as a crime. Immigrants are portrayed just as stealing American jobs and benefiting from
government programs such as welfare. Countless people think it was a voluntary action for them to
come to the United State, therefore whatever comes their way is what they deserve regardless if it is
health problems, racism or low paying jobs. However, what most of American people don't realize is
that the majority of Mexican migrants are forced to migrate to the United State in order to survive.
They constantly risk their lives to cross a dangerous border in order to find the jobs that the
American people don't want to endure. In the book called "Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies", the author,
Seth Holmes focuses on the lives of an indigenous Mexican group called the Triquis. Throughout
the book, he focuses on the journey of the group from their hometown of Oaxaca to farms in
California and Washington. The book also emphasizes how racism and health problems of migrant
workers have become invisible to the American people. It is commonly seen that their personal
damage such as health problems and placement on the social hierarchy system is only to be blamed
on their sole decision to come to a country where they are considered illegal. Instead of blaming the

College Athletes Should Not Be Banned
Every year NCAA brings in approximately $6 billion from highly anticipated sports events, such as
this month's NCAA tournament "March Madness", for example.1 While brackets will be broken,
nets will be slashed, and the championship team will be crowned, ultimately the real winner from
college events like these is the NCAA itself. While the relentless student–athletes train rigorously
day and night to represent their schools, the athletes who participate do not see a single penny, even
though they are the ones who "...risk career–ending injuries every time they onto the court, field, or
rink." The NCAA forces all 'amateur' college athletes to sign a contract, forbidding monetary
compensation for their efforts and restricting them from any sponsorship deals with payouts. This
has posed a dilemma since the early 1900s, because some of the best collegiate athletes have been
dirt poor, while the NCAA program has continued to make millions off of the names of athletes who
cannot afford to feed their own families. As a solution, all NCAA athletes deserve to be paid. In the
event that there were only one reason that college athletes ought to be paid, it is that both the NCAA
and the college itself utilizes players' name and status for its own financial benefit. Whether it is
selling players jerseys or signing autographs, the NCAA is successfully profiting off of the player
whose number is on the shirt, without giving any cut to the player himself. An eleven billion dollar

A Book Report on Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut
1. Major Characters of the Novel a. Billy Pilgrim is the person that the book is written around. We

the alien planet of Tralmalfadore, to his older age at his 1960s home in Illum. It is his experiences
and journeys that we follow, and his actions we read about. However, Billy had a specific lack of
character for a main one. He is not heroic, he has very little personality traits, let alone an immersive
and complex character. Most of the story is written around his experiences that seem more like
symptoms of Post–Traumatic Stress Disorder from his World War Two days, combined with

2. The central conflict of this book is Billy coming to terms with the unfortunate events happening
around him, and facing this character versus world scenario of everything and everyone always
being against him in some way or another. Billy sees so much suffering and so much death. He is
blamed for the death of Ronald Weary, which is not his fault. He witnesses the Dresden
Firebombing, and has an overall uneventful blain life to begin with. Billy needs to find a way to
cope with this unbearable pressure, and whether or not the Tralmalfadorians are real, their message
is real to Billy. The philosophy they present is the excuse Billy needs to justify all the wrong he sees
around him. The Tralmalfadorian belief being that there is no free will, and that you timeline is fact,
and that you simply experience death, but continue "existing" afterwards. Essentially, you always
exist and what happens to you is predetermined fate. This allows Billy to pass on all of the death and
misery around him as meant to be. He can rest assured knowing that there is nothing he could about
anything in the past, present, or future. There was nothing he could have done or can do to stop the
death and torture, weather it is the death of his wife, the firebombing in Dresden, or even his own
death. This motivation–less philosophy is his resolution to his devastating conflict, and is directly
responsible for his lack of action throughout the story. 3.

Treatment Plan For Patients With Terminally Ill Patients...
End of life can be completely difficult to cope with, but is a part of everyday life. End of life
pertains to the last days of a patient's life, which means that end of life requires many important
decisions such as medical treatment and knowing when to terminate life support. So planning end of
life can be extremely difficult for the patient and their family members. They will have to make the
decision on where the patient would like to spend their last days, treatments they wish to have and
not to mention their goals of care. This topic is truly important because not many individuals realize
what comes with dealing with end of life care. When it comes to medical treatments for the patient,

Based on that decision the family can determine how the patient will be cared for at home i.e. a

work and dedication. The patient will need help with bathing, feeding, toileting, dressing and also
turning and repositioning. First, if the patient chooses to enter into a hospice facility, it means that
their life expectancy is six months or less. In order for the patient to live a quality life in the last
days, they must be pain and symptom free. This is the service that is provided by the hospice facility
(palliative care), their goal is ensuring that the patient is comfortable. With this service available the
family can focus all of their attention on their loved ones. Not to mention, they can enjoy their last
moments with them. Secondly, if the patient decides to return home there will have to be a caregiver
present and they are usually supervised by the doctor and the hospice staff. This environment allows
for the patient to again be surrounded by loved ones. It also allows for them to have the peace of

Billy through all of his hardships trying to find comfort could only be done through the
Tralfalmadorian concept of time. The idea behind the Tralfalmadorian's concept of time is that it is
like a slide show. That it is possible to take a slide out and look at it, even relive it over and over
again. The past, present, and

Choice and Direction in the Writings of Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
Satire in American literature has evolved in response to the development of the American mind, its
increasing use of free will, and the context that surrounds this notion. Satire is the biting wit that
authors (labeled satirists) bring to their literature to expose and mock the follies of society. Satirists
can be divided, however, into two groups with very different purposes. One type mocks simply for
the enjoyment of mocking. These satirists are found almost everywhere in the world, on every street
corner, household, and television sitcom. It is the second type of satirist who is a strong force in the
world of literature. The satirical author will mock to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The complexities of institutions such as business and government are confusing the sense of
direction needed in order to prosper, causing a spiritual decline that results in the warping of the
public's morals. Vonnegut also feels that the American attitude of dwelling on the worst events of
life is contributing this loss of spirit. Vonnegut offers solutions to this problem in Slaughterhouse
Five, as he introduces new ways of perceiving our lives. With the increasing amount of free will that
is being granted to people around the world, many have no sense of how to use it. Vonnegut is
particularly upset with the way that Americans are living and the way in which society is moving.
Through his literature, he offers a path for the use of free will with the notion that all people are
given the opportunity to better themselves. Through the bettering of the individual comes the
bettering of society.
Vonnegut's last addition to the literary world is his wantonly satirical novel Timequake. Timequake
is devoted to the concept of free will and its dominance in nature. In this novel Vonnegut forces
people to take a step back and look at how the human race is doing: "At 2:27 p.m. on February 13th
of the year 2001, the Universe suffered a crisis in self–confidence. Should it go on expanding
indefinitely?" (32) At the end of thisprocess of imploding, however, the universe begins expanding
once again on February

Rhetorical Devices In Redfern Speech
Have you ever written an essay, composed a letter or read a book? What do you need to do these
things well? Rhetoric. It is the fundamental building blocks of good education, in determining the
decisions we make and how it further deepens one's knowledge. It can inspire people to be
generous, or provoke people to hate and fear. It can change the world by deepening the purpose of
good or bad. It can turn a speaker into a hero or enemy. It can turn a listener into an alley or an
opponent. Communication involves the beautiful art of interactions and understandings between the
souls of our society. Little do we realise, rhetoric is ceaselessly moulding our human experience
through the means of persuasion and transformation. Good morning to my fellow Year 12 Good
Samaritan advanced students, it is clear that despite contextual differences of texts, the
amalgamation of rhetoric, textual integrity, purpose and form establishes a resonating message to
audiences. Therefore, composers employ 'great rhetoric' and cohesiveness in their speeches which
have the capability to persuade and transform society's views, attitudes and beliefs. This is
undoubtedly clear in Paul Keating's, 'Redfern Speech' and Anwar Sadat's, 'Speech to the Israeli
Knesset', which both exhibit the power of words in refining our perspectives and ideas. They both
achieve value beyond the time and place in which they were first delivered.
Great rhetoric can have the potential to persuade the audience into

Comparing Themes in Cat’s Cradle and Slaughterhouse Five
Comparing Themes in Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse Five
Throughout his career, Kurt Vonnegut has used writing as a tool to convey penetrating messages and
ominous warnings about our society. He skillfully combines vivid imagery with a distinctly satirical
and anecdotal style to explore complex issues such as religion and war. Two of his most well known,
and most gripping, novels that embody this subtle talent are Cat's Cradle and Slaughterhouse–Five.
Both books represent Vonnegut's genius for manipulating fiction to reveal glaring, disturbing and
occasionally redemptive truths about human nature. On the surface, Cat's Cradle and
Slaughterhouse–Five are dramatically different novels, each with its own characters, symbols, ...

However, Vonnegut asserts that although God may not exist, free will may not exist either. In
Slaughterhouse–Five, he summarizes his opinions with the comment; "among the things Billy
Pilgrim could not change were the past, the present, and the future (SF 60)." According to the
Tralfamadorians, time is constant, and not dynamic. To them, "all moments, past, present, and
future, always have existed, always will exist„.they can see how permanent all the moments are (SF
27)." Because of this, the decisions we make are not due to free will; instead, they occur because
"everybody has to do exactly what he does (SF 198)." In Cat's Cradle, Jonah, the main character,
does not travel through time as Billy Pilgrim does, yet he is able to come to the same realization that
time is more like a static stretch of mountains than a flowing river. However, unlike Billy, Jonah
must discover this without the help of the Tralfamadorians. When Jonah experiences "a Bokononist
vision of the unity in every second of all time and all wandering mankind (CC 67)," he is finally
able to understand how all of time is connected.
Billy and Jonah both have unique insights into the nature of time, consequently, they have resigned
themselves to fate; neither of them cares about death or life because they know that they are helpless
to change the future. Whenever Jonah recounts a story,

Russian Opera Essay

  • 1. Russian Opera Essay Russian Opera The seeds of a distinctively national art music in Russia are usually dated from the first half of the 19th century. The performance of the opera A Life for the Tsar (1836), by Mikhail GLINKA, is usually cited as the turning point for Russian music (Russia's national anthem is taken from this opera). In this historical opera, as well as in his subsequent opera Ruslan and Ludmila (1842), the orchestral fantasy Kamarinskaya (1848), and numerous songs, Glinka successfully fused the typical melodies, harmonies, and rhythms of Russian folk music with the forms and techniques of Italian opera –– creating an eclectic but unmistakably national idiom. Glinka's younger contemporary, Alexander DARGOMYZHSKY, is best known for his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Musorgsky was undoubtedly the most original composer of the Five. Continuing Dargomyzhsky's search for musical realism, he combined an instinctive flair for the nuances of folk music with flexible, textually motivated rhythmic practices and unusual harmonic juxtapositions in his many songs, his operatic masterpiece Boris Godunov (1869–72), and his suite for piano Pictures at an Exhibition (1874). Although he was misunderstood by many of his contemporaries, Mussorgsky's legacy has been profoundly important for music in the 20th century. The conspicuous targets of the nationalists were Aleksandr Serov (1820–71), a prominent music critic, Wagnerite, and opera composer, and Anton RUBINSTEIN, a legendary piano virtuoso as well as a prolific composer. Rubinstein and his brother Nikolai (1835–81) were responsible for establishing the first music conservatories in Russia, founded on German models, in Saint Petersburg (1862) and Moscow (1866). Peter Ilich TCHAIKOVSKY was one of the first graduates of the former and subsequently taught at the latter. Without rejecting his national heritage Tchaikovsky evolved a more cosmopolitan, romantic, yet highly personal style that won him widespread international popularity. • 3. The Greatest Impacts Of The World On Theology And Government Two of the greatest impacts one can have on the world are those on theology and government; since its origin, one's religion had dictated his/her decisions, actions, and basic routines of daily life and a nation's government affects the many people living under it, controlling them. Historically, these two areas of impact have been rarely been any less significant. Thus, even in their own times, medieval German religious leader and founder of the Protestant Church, Martin Luther and ancient Chinese political philosopher, Confucius were highly influential. In fact, their lives continue to affect us, today. As of December 2011, about 800,640,000, or 11.6% of the world's population, was protestant, continuing Luther's legacy. Confucius' philosophy, known as Confucianism and dominated Chinese beliefs for millennia, ending in its control over politics only with the fall of imperial China and the birth of the Republic of China. Throughout many other parts of East Asia, however, Confucianism has in some ways prevailed, being the root of ancestral offerings and various familial and societal relationships and continues to be taught in many of the region's schools. Both Confucius and Luther have deeply affected the world, both in their own times and today. The two men are similar in that sense. They are also similar in having brought new beliefs to their societies. Despite these similarities, though, Confucius and Luther differ from one another in one significant way: Luther's ... • 5. Kurt Vonnegut 's Slaughterhouse Five I. Introduction A. Hook 1. PTSD, or post–traumatic stress disorder, is an anxiety disorder that develops in some after they experience extremely traumatic events, such as combat. Those with PTSD may relive the event via intrusive memories, flashbacks and nightmares; they would do anything to avoid memories of trauma, including inventing an alternate planet. 2. Billy, the main character in Kurt Vonnegut's novel Slaughterhouse–Five, experienced firsthand the trauma of war during the firebombing of Dresden. After this event, Billy created Tramfaladore, the planet where time does not exist. B. Summary 1. In Kurt Vonnegut 's novel, Slaughterhouse–Five, he waves a story of destruction, war, mental health, and time travel to demonstrate the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were sounds like giant footsteps above." (Vonnegut 177) b. "A guard would go to the head of the stairs every so often to see what it was like outside, then he would come down and whisper to the other guars. There was a firestorm out there. Dresden was one big flame. The one flame ate everything organic, everything that would burn." (Vonnegut 177). c. Events that are more emotionally difficult are focused on less; instead of time travelling to the bombing, Billy remembers it (Harris). This makes the traumatic event less immediate, allowing for distance between the horrors of war and the present. 3. Non–linear fashion of SHV a. No specific climax or chronological order: events do not follow the traditional 'linear' fashion of novel. 1. Time is not a linear progression of events, but a constant condition: "All moments, past, present, and future, all have existed and always will." → Tralfamadorian principle 2. The Tralfamadorians provide Billy with the concept of nonlinear time, which becomes the foundation for a mode of living (Vanderwerken). 3. "I am a Tralfamadorian, seeing all time as you might see a stretch of the Rocky Mountains. All time is all time. It does not change. It does not lend itself to warnings or explanations. It simply is. Take it moment by moment, and you will find that we are all, as I've said before, bugs in amber." (Vonnegut 86) b. Events are seemingly randomized: the reader can interpret ... • 7. Insanity of War in Slaughterhouse Five Slaughterhouse–Five, by Kurt Vonnegut Jr., is the tale of a gawky World War II veteran/soldier, Billy Pilgrim. His wartime experiences and their effects lead him to the ultimate conclusion that war is unexplainable. To portray this effectively, Vonnegut presents the story in two dimensions: historical and science–fiction. The irrationality of war is emphasized in each dimension by contrasts in its comic and tragic elements. The historical seriousness of the Battle of the Bulge and the bombing of Dresden are contrasted by many ironies and dark humor; the fantastical, science– fiction–type place of Tralfamadore is, in truth, an outlet for Vonnegut to show his incredibly serious fatalistic views. The surprising variations of the seriousness ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One soldier dies from the dry heaves after being forced to work in a rotting corpse mine. Ironically, this man has survived the bombing of Dresden, yet dies from the smell of others who died in the bombing. Eventually, the corpse mines are closed because of the horrendous conditions, and the war ends. The book ends as Billy is walking out of the slaughterhouse after gaining his freedom and he notices is that, "Birds were talking. One bird said to Billy Pilgrim, "Poo–tee–weet?'" The bird's cameo in the story reinforces the idea that there is nothing to say about an unnecessary massacre as in Dresden, and that war is illogical, like the bird's words. This is ironic, since the theme of the novel, which should be the clearest message derived from the story, is summed up in the incoherent words of a bird. All these incidences of irony show senselessness and coincidence, with undertones of dark humor. [In questioning why the incidences of the novel occur, it is impossible to give a logical explanation.] This parallels the idea that war is nonsense, senseless, full of coincidence, and is unexplainable. • 9. Kurt Vonnegut 's Slaughterhouse Five Irrational behavior is a huge part of Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse–five because Billy Pilgrim's character and the plot line are shaped by it throughout the book. The spastic ordering of his life story and the thorough belief that he was abducted by Tralfamadorian aliens are what shape this book's story and Billy's way of life. Although unreasonable, his behavior can be considered justified because of the time he spent in World War II. Post–traumatic Stress Disorder, PTSD, is common in veterans and, in Billy's case, very serious. Billy is not at fault for the reaction his brain has to certain situations or that he suffers from flashbacks, sleep complications, and emotional numbness. PTSD is responsible for and justify Billy's delusions and aberrant behavior. The abduction of Billy Pilgrim by the Tralfamadorians is a hallucination that could be a way to escape a world destroyed by war. Billy escapes there when he is stressed, from his experiences of war on earth. It's a haven in the midst of all the madness around him. These aliens are what makes another world so intriguing, what get Billy out of our world that is plagued by war. This is justifiable because war is an awful experience and who wouldn 't want an escape from the constant death, injury, and fighting. Billy gets into Kilgore Trout's books before he even shows signs of PTSD. The books are already infused in his brain and Billy's fantasies becomes his reality when he starts to have hallucinations. • 11. Slaughterhouse Five And The Comforts Of Indifference By... find that there is none. The story doesn't morally make any sense, and thats the conclusion Vonnegut is trying to guide the reader towards. The literary criticism of 'Slaughterhouse Five' and the Comforts of Indifference, written by Barry Chabot is a critical essay that explores deeper into the meaning behind the eccentric story of Billy Pilgrim, and its creator Kurt Vonnegut. Billy Pilgrim's indifference is an extension of Vonnegut attempting to come to terms with the violent nature of man. However this "comfort" is suggested to be "cruelly inadequate" and described to be an "opiate of the terminally weary", (Chabot n.p.) and that the solace Billy Pilgrim finds in indifference only serves to help accommodate him to the atrocities of the world rather than standing up to them. Even though the bombing of Dresden is evidence enough of the destruction brought about by war Vonnegut "makes references to the concentration camps, the destruction of European Jewry, the bombing of Hiroshima, and behind them, as if to insist that such murderousness is no historical anomaly, to the children 's crusades of another era."(Chabot n.p.) Beyond the violence caused by humans is the inevitable coming of death whether violence is present or not. "Vonnegut 's father died of natural causes, not at the hands of others." In addition "Edgar Derby is never mentioned without reference to the fact that he is to be executed for stealing a teapot, an event which is not finally narrated until the final ... • 13. Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut The author Kurt Vonnegut characterizes the structure of his novel, Slaughterhouse–Five, as schizophrenic. The novel jumps to and from fragmented clumps of information without accordance to traditional chronological order. The unique jumpy structure and the representation of time exemplified by this structure transcend simply commenting on the senselessness of massacre and war. The schizophrenic representation of time experienced by Billy Pilgrim challenges the traditional American narrative presented in cause and effect relationships: this challenge serves to critique the alienation and isolation perpetuated by American society as the root of terrible tragedies including massacres. The representation of time mimics the concept of time held by the alien species the Tralformadorians challenging American arrogance that societal norms equal fundamental truths. Tralformadorians read novels as a series of telegraph–like blocks of language void of any relation besides that the author chose to group them together. When read together all at once these blocks of language depict a life that is deep and beautiful. Fragments of Billy Pilgrim's life complied together without chronological order represent a manifestation of the Tralformadorian concept of time. Tralformadorian time diverges completely from the traditional and linear western narrative which focuses on cause and effect relationships. The alienation and sadness Billy experiences no longer stand as simply a product of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Others returned and went crazy due to the many hardships and terrors faced. The protagonist in Slaughter– House Five, Billy Pilgrim, has to deal with some of these things along with many other complications in his life. Slaughter House Five (1968), by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., is an anti–war novel about a man's life before, after and during the time he spent fighting in World War II. The author writes of many different human beings, showing that each one thinks war is ultimately, the worst thing. While in the war, Billy is in the hospital during his imprisonment by the Germans. There is an old general there who was a teacher before joining in the war efforts. One day, in a conversation with Billy and another older man in the hospital, the general starts to talk about what he thinks of the war. He says, "You know–– we've had to imagine the war here, and we have imagined that it was being fought by aging men like ourselves. We had forgotten that wars were fought by babies. When I saw those freshly shaved faces, it was a shock. "'My God, my God––––' I said to myself, 'It's the Children's Crusade'" (p. 106). This general feels that war is nothing but babies being murdered by one another. He is disturbed by the thought of war and the fact that so many young people are dying for its cause. Billy, the protagonist of this novel, also has bitter feelings about war. While he is in the zoo on the planet of Tralfamadore, he is able to communicate with the aliens. In a conversation with them, he says that he is from a planet "that has been engaged in senseless slaughter since the beginning of time" (p. 116). The Impact Of Science Fiction Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse–Five brilliantly illustrates how being in combat traumatically affects soldiers in time of war. Indeed, the author uses science fiction and the creative use of time travel as a mold to bring about his true feelings towards war, thus making Slaughterhouse–Five a quintessential anti–war book. Vonnegut's usage of science fiction creates an outlet to the planet of Tralfamadore where Billy is able to escape his mental damage from war. The famous line, "Billy Pilgrim has come unstuck in time" (Vonnegut 23), explains how Billy is not stuck in the same day as the rest of the world, rather he was traveling back in time to the war. Escaping into the science fiction world was the best way for Vonnegut to express himself. This brought joy to Kurt Vonnegut as he realized he was able to get his story of war at Dresden out. It is explained that, "he can talk about why he was writing this book and the difficulties involved" (MacFarlane), it was the only way to get his feelings down on paper without reliving his horrific memories. He used this creative writing style to leave, "the delusion or escape fantasy of a character who is unable to live with the reality...(Bényei). Therefore, Vonnegut geniusly created the alter ego of Billy Pilgrim, and the fictional planet of Tralfamadore. Due to the fact that Billy Pilgrim is essentially Kurt Vonnegut, it is indicated that Billy faces much depression and misery. Since depression and misery are very pessimistic traits, Billy goes into the fantasy world. He escapes to the planet of Tralfamadore. After the war "when he was abducted by the Tralfamadorians..." George Roy Hill's movie adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's novel Slaughter–house Five is a fairly accurate version that stays relatively close to Vonnegut's own vision. Throughout Vonnegut novel Billy Pilgrim, a WWII soldier who was captured by the Germans and held captive as an American POW (prisoner of war), demonstrates several extreme compulsive tendencies due to the horrific events he witnessed as an American POW victim. After reading of Billy's experiences, I did not have faith in the movies ability to accurately present Vonnegut's own personal feelings. On the contrary, after seeing George Hill's movie adaptation of Slaughter–house Five, I felt that the he did an extremely nice job in keeping with what Vonnegut had intended to be seen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hill is able to achieve this by making Billy the only fragment of black on an all–white background. This helps to set Billy apart from the rest of the screen and in essence isolates him as the only person around. While I felt the director did a good job of conveying the novel as accurately as possible, just as in other move adaptations, there were some inaccuracies and discrepancies from one medium to the other. One aspect of the movie that really stood out for me was the abduction scene. In the movie, Pilgrim is captured by the alien creatures from inside his bedroom; a white ball of light slowly intensifies until it engulfs the entire screen and after a quick cutaway we find Billy on Tralfamadore. This was not the way Vonnegut describes Billy's abduction in the book. He was not merely sitting in his bedroom with his dog Spot, instead he had been watching a war movie, and then he walks outside to allow Spot to go to the bathroom. It is at this point, when Billy is outside, that the aliens come and capture him. Billy's war experience is also very difference from the novel, the bombing of Dresden is the best example of this. Vonnegut describes the aftermath by saying, "the once beautiful city [looked] like the surface of the moon" (Vonnegut). I envisioned a different scene when reading the book than what was translated onto the big screen. In my opinion, the city appears no different than any other city that has just been bombed. Slaughterhouse Five By Kurt Vonnegut Slaughterhouse–five Kurt Vonnegut combines satire, imagery and an anecdotal style to talk about complex issues such as science, religion, sex, socialism, pacifism and tradition. He used his writing to convey messages and warnings to society about these issues. Slaughterhouse–five is one of his most well known novels. In this novel Vonnegut uses fiction to portray shadowy truths about human nature. Billy pilgrim is the main focus of Slaughterhouse–five; through him and other characters Vonnegut portrays his beliefs about free will and predestination. He is strongly anti–war; this is present right from the start of the novel. In Slaughterhouse–five Vonnegut uses Billy as a warning to society about having the belief that everything is predetermined and therefore inevitable. Vonnegut wants his readers to think independently and question all the beliefs of the world. One of the major themes that emerge in Slaughterhouse–five is from Vonnegut's own anti–war feelings. In the opening chapter of the novel Vonnegut writes in his own voice about his personal experience witnessing the firebombing of Dresden in Eastern Germany during World War II as a prisoner of war. This event was pivotal in shaping his feeling and view of war. In this chapter Vonnegut is having a discussion with Bernard O'Hare a wartime friend and tells him "there is nothing intelligent to say about a massacre" (Vonnegut 19). Adolf Hitler of Germany: Martin Luther of Germany: Argument: No it is impossible. Argument: Yes it is possible. Today we have two great and influential people debating an incredibly controversial topic. Adolf Hitler and Martin Luther are both German citizens during a time of conflict, however that is where the similarities end. Luther, who was born in 1483 lived in a very different world from Hither. To Luther, the conflict was focused primarily around religion and basic human rights. These conflicts resulted in small scale battles and wars. Hitler's conflict was based on power and control. Religion was no longer the most controversial subject. This conflict, combined with modern weaponry and tactics, produced an incredibly deadly war: World War II. Luther was best known for being outspoken against the corrupt Catholic church. Hitler was best known for murdering six million Jews. Both influential people have interesting opinions to share on peace. • 29. Kurt Vonnegut 's ' Slaughterhouse Five, Billy Pilgrim... In today's world we question the problem of free will and it's understanding. Is the nature of humanity characterized by the ability to chose for oneself or through our understanding of physical laws. Is there any room for individuality when and if the world operates under these fundamental laws or whether God has already created a "path" for us to follow? When this question comes up people tend to want to forget about it. Kurt Vonnegut abjects this illusion of free will in his novel by his use in 'characters' and having free will. In Slaughterhouse–five, Billy Pilgrim question the Tralfamadorians, "Why me?" Their response is simply, "...There is no why." The Tralfamodorians exemplify the role of "the other" that marks free will as a distinctly a human characteristic. Billy use's this as a means to cope with the reality that pain and suffering is a guarantee. Vonnegut repetition of the phrase "So it goes" , supports that free will is question with no answer and desensitizes the major suffering and deaths throughout the novel. All of the events in his life were simply uncontrollable and he was able to travel throughout various events in his life easily. In Chapter One the narrator is speaking with movie–maker, Harrison Starr, about the book he plans to write about World War II. The members of Congress that stay within the confines of Congress for decades may be involved with corruption with no recourse for their actions. This is because the incumbent party has an advantage over the rivaling party on the premise that they are already in office. One of the main examples of this can be seen in the Keating Five in the late 1980's. Five senators, who were given donations by Charles Keating, "influenced a regulatory agency on behalf of Keating's savings and loan institution, which was under investigation" (Otteson 1991). These senators were dealt no punishment, while two of the senators were actually re–elected. This not only displays the potential corruption, but also shows how strong the incumbent party is when facing elections. If term limits were enacted, these men would have not been able to be re– elected and new senators could have taken their positions. . This ability for change in the members of Congress can bring about new ideals and outlooks onto common issues that the country faces today. They disregard so many important things that come with war, the millions of dollars spent, the tragic amount of deaths and most deaths being civilians who are completely innocent. They speak like if war were inevitable and there was nothing anyone could do about it. In the novel, Vonnegut gives an example, "What he meant, of course, was that there would always be wars, that they were as easy to stop as glaciers."(Vonnegut 3). Although this is true, it does not take away from the harsh reality that war really is. According to scholarly author Zoran Minderovic, "Rimsky–Korsakov's music is accessible and engaging owing to his talent for tone–coloring and brilliant orchestration. Furthermore, his operas are masterful musical evocations of myths and legends." One of his most well–known works, "Flight of the Bumblebee," displays his talent of text painting perfectly. The piece went down in history as one of the most recognizable compositions in the world. Rimsky–Korsakov was born in Tikhvin, Russia in 1844. He did not always have a significant interest in music. As a child, he took piano lessons, but he chose to follow in the footsteps of his brother and pursue a career in the Navy. While attending the Naval College at St. Petersburg, Korsakov still committed his free time to practicing piano and composition. In fact, he composed his very first symphony on a navy ship. Once he graduated naval school, he became a professor of orchestration and composition at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, which is known today as the "Rimsky–Korsakov Conservatory" in his honor. Kurt Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five -- A Great American Novel For a novel to be considered a Great American Novel, it must contain a theme that is uniquely American, a hero that is the essence of a great American, or relevance to the American people. Others argue, however, that the Great American Novel may never exist. They say that America and her image are constantly changing and therefore, there will never be a novel that can represent the country in its entirety. In his novel, Slaughterhouse–Five, Kurt Vonnegut writes about war and its destructiveness. Vonnegut tells the story of Billy Pilgrim, an unlikely hero, mentally scarred by World War Two. Pilgrim recalled that the guards resembled a barbershop quartet as they "experimented with one expression and then another, saying nothing though their mouths were often open" (Vonnegut 227). The night of February 13th to the morning of February 14th, 1945, Billy Pilgrim endured the firebombing of Dresden, which has come to be known as one of the worst bombings in history. More than 135,000 people were killed in the bombing and Pilgrim, along with a small group that took refuge in a meat locker, was one the few survivors of the bombing. Upon emerging, Billy Pilgrim and the soldiers discovered that "everybody in the city was supposed to be dead, regardless of what they were, and that anybody that moved represented a flaw in the design" (Vonnegut 180). The city of Dresden was compared to "the moon..., nothing but minerals" (Vonnegut 227). Even after the firebombing, the survivors were still surrounded in death–their method of transportation being a "coffin shaped wagon" (Vonnegut 278). The firebombing might have been the event that created the most damage for Billy Pilgrim and began his downward spiral into escape from reality. Pilgrim also created an alternate world called Tralfamadore where death, free will, and time do not exist. • 49. The Slaughterhouse Five Novel By Kurt Vonnegut The Slaughterhouse Five novel, is a fictional and nonfictional delight all clashed into one. The author, Kurt Vonnegut, amazingly combines a fictional character's life with the nonfictional influence of what Kurt himself had experienced. As well as major topics being debated on and dealt with today. Billy Pilgrim takes hold of the story's main protagonist as a prisoner of war during the Dresden raids in eastern Germany. While reading, I found many relationships in the novel to common concerns, such as time and death; too correlated opinions from other anti–war enthusiasts. Similar to time, is death, Billy experienced a lot of this during the war. Death was on a regular basis throughout Billy's life. "...Billy uncorked it with his thumbs. It didn't make a pop. The champagne was dead. So it goes"(Vonnegut 93). Obviously champagne isn't a big deal for us, but what about this passage, "Only the candles and the soap were of German origin. They had ghostly, opalescent similarity. The British had no way of knowing it, but the candles and the soap were made from the fat of rendered Jews and Gypsies and fairies and communists, and other enemies of the State. Resulting in the Holocaust, costing the lives of over 6 million enemies, or Jews, of the state. From my high school textbooks I remember that most Jews ran most of the banks in Germany before the war, eventually the Depression would hit and I wouldn't doubt that the Jews were blamed falsely. Lincoln Savings and the Keating Five was overtaken by the American Continental Corporation. Before Keating became in power, the company was regulated well. Then, when Keating began his reign, he fired all of the current management. Red flag right there. Since the deregulation began in the beginning of the decade that allowed savings and loan companies to make higher risk investments, loan operators took advantage of them. Take a guess at who was one of those people. Yes, Charles Keating. With Keating at the front, Lincoln's Assets skyrocketed from $1.1 billion to $5.5 billion. Then, in 1985, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board (FHLBB) finally thought that maybe, just maybe, the savings industry's ignorance to riskiness was exposing the government's insurance funds to huge losses. The American public consistently listens to the media telling stories of how these people cross the border illegally, which is deemed as a crime. Immigrants are portrayed just as stealing American jobs and benefiting from government programs such as welfare. Countless people think it was a voluntary action for them to come to the United State, therefore whatever comes their way is what they deserve regardless if it is health problems, racism or low paying jobs. However, what most of American people don't realize is that the majority of Mexican migrants are forced to migrate to the United State in order to survive. They constantly risk their lives to cross a dangerous border in order to find the jobs that the American people don't want to endure. In the book called "Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies", the author, Seth Holmes focuses on the lives of an indigenous Mexican group called the Triquis. Throughout the book, he focuses on the journey of the group from their hometown of Oaxaca to farms in California and Washington. The book also emphasizes how racism and health problems of migrant workers have become invisible to the American people. While the relentless student–athletes train rigorously day and night to represent their schools, the athletes who participate do not see a single penny, even though they are the ones who "...risk career–ending injuries every time they onto the court, field, or rink." The NCAA forces all 'amateur' college athletes to sign a contract, forbidding monetary compensation for their efforts and restricting them from any sponsorship deals with payouts. This has posed a dilemma since the early 1900s, because some of the best collegiate athletes have been dirt poor, while the NCAA program has continued to make millions off of the names of athletes who cannot afford to feed their own families. As a solution, all NCAA athletes deserve to be paid. In the event that there were only one reason that college athletes ought to be paid, it is that both the NCAA and the college itself utilizes players' name and status for its own financial benefit. He witnesses the Dresden Firebombing, and has an overall uneventful blain life to begin with. Billy needs to find a way to cope with this unbearable pressure, and whether or not the Tralmalfadorians are real, their message is real to Billy. The Tralmalfadorian belief being that there is no free will, and that you timeline is fact, and that you simply experience death, but continue "existing" afterwards. Essentially, you always exist and what happens to you is predetermined fate. This allows Billy to pass on all of the death and misery around him as meant to be. Vonnegut offers solutions to this problem in Slaughterhouse Five, as he introduces new ways of perceiving our lives. With the increasing amount of free will that is being granted to people around the world, many have no sense of how to use it. • 76. Rhetorical Devices In Redfern Speech Have you ever written an essay, composed a letter or read a book? What do you need to do these things well? Rhetoric. It is the fundamental building blocks of good education, in determining the decisions we make and how it further deepens one's knowledge. It can inspire people to be generous, or provoke people to hate and fear. It can change the world by deepening the purpose of good or bad. It can turn a speaker into a hero or enemy. It can turn a listener into an alley or an opponent. Communication involves the beautiful art of interactions and understandings between the souls of our society. Little do we realise, rhetoric is ceaselessly moulding our human experience through the means of persuasion and transformation. Good morning to my fellow Year 12 Good Samaritan advanced students, it is clear that despite contextual differences of texts, the amalgamation of rhetoric, textual integrity, purpose and form establishes a resonating message to audiences. Therefore, composers employ 'great rhetoric' and cohesiveness in their speeches which have the capability to persuade and transform society's views, attitudes and beliefs. This is undoubtedly clear in Paul Keating's, 'Redfern Speech' and Anwar Sadat's, 'Speech to the Israeli Knesset', which both exhibit the power of words in refining our perspectives and ideas. According to the Tralfamadorians, time is constant, and not dynamic. To them, "all moments, past, present, and future, always have existed, always will exist„.they can see how permanent all the moments are (SF 27)." Because of this, the decisions we make are not due to free will; instead, they occur because "everybody has to do exactly what he does (SF 198)."
