world. Based on the Bell UH–1 Huey airframe and developed as a private venture, it proved to be a
huge success once it entered combat in Vietnam. This was one of the few U.S. Army aircraft to have
actual combat experience being put into the design of the airframe. The Cobra successfully provided
aerial gun support and fire suppression for the vulnerable transport and airmobile aircraft. The
overwhelming success it had in real world battle was the beginning of the armed gunship style
helicopters being used by the U.S. Military. Armed helicopters came into widespread use in Vietnam

A Battle Analysis of Operation Anaconda Operation Anaconda, which was part of Operation
Enduring Freedom, was a combat operation that took place in the Shahikot Valley of Eastern
Afghanistan during March 2002. Months earlier, a large number of Taliban and al Qaeda forces fled
into the valley after the U.S. failed to achieve its objectives at Tora Bora. An operation similar in
scope and intent, success at Tora Bora would have negated the need to conduct Operation Anaconda
and potentially could have had profound impacts on the enduring conflict in Afghanistan. Early on

Operation Anaconda was comprised of three smaller, interrelated operations. U.S. and coalition
SOF, along with Afghan Soldiers, were to take up blocking positions surrounding the Shahikot
Valley. In theory they would prevent an impenetrable coil, like a constricting snake, around the
enemy forces to prevent exfiltration. The Eastern Alliance, led by a local warlord named Zia Lodin,
and some U.S. SOF would be the driving force, or "hammer", during the operation. TF Hammer
would then enter the valley at its southwestern opening. They had orders to engage and destroy or
capture any opposition within the valley and drive the enemy towards the opening on the other side.
TF Rakkasans, comprised of 10th Mountain Division and 101st Airborne Division Soldiers, would
be there waiting and acting as the "anvil". In order for this operation to succeed the hammer and
anvil had to be executed exactly as planned. Any deviation could result in the enemy escaping or
increased risk of friendly fire. Air support was never seen as having a major role during any part of
the operation. The Air Force was responsible for conducting strikes on 13 preplanned targets before

The Boeing Company is the 800–pound gorilla of US aerospace. The world's largest aerospace

The site selected for the combat outpost at Wanat was adjacent to the village's houses, mosque,
bazaar, and hotel, and was near the local District Center and Afghan National police station. The site
selected was on a plateau where two valleys met and was surrounded by mountains and low ground,
resulting in extensive dead space an area that cannot be visually observed around the position. The
Battalion's plan to realign within the Wygal Valley and establish a combat outpost at Wanat was a
two–part operation called Operation Rock Move. The Concept of Operations covered a 3–day
period from July 8–10, 2008, and addressed the simultaneous disestablishment of combat outpost
Bella and the initial movement to and occupation of the site at Wanat, and included those assets

One great example is the aim to build streamlined aircraft capable of high speed and efficiency.
Hughes rigorous pursuit of building the very best aircraft continues to this day. Almost all modern
aircraft use flush rivets and smooth streamlined surfaces to cut through the air. Another of Hughes's
contributions was simply inspiring public interest in aviation. The Hughes H–4 Hercules, although
not a success by most defections, still motivates public interest in aviation today. Displayed in a

Confusion Of Control And Control Of Operation Anaconda
Operation Anaconda was a joint operation. Even though it was a joint operation, this does not
necessarily mean cohesive. This is especially true of the air operations. Poorly executed joint
functions, primarily air operations, resulted in diminished close air support capabilities during
Operation Anaconda due to confusion of control of aviation assets, lack of proper communication
equipment, and available air coordination personnel were overwhelmed. Confusion of control of
Aviation Assets The first reason for the diminished capabilities was that there was confusion on who
had tactical control of some aviation assets. Without positive control of all available assets,
problems were inevitable. Task Force Dagger, the Special Operation Force element, was part of
Combined CJTF Mountain (CJTF), the overall command element. CJTF Mountain was not granted
Tactical Control (TACON) of TF Dagger though. This also means that TF Dagger retained control
of its aviation assets (Fleri, 2003). The aviation assets in question still assigned to TF Dagger were
the AC–130 gunships. These aircraft are one of the most capable close air support assets that is
available to the troops on the ground. This fixed wing aircraft is heavily armed. These armaments
include a 25mm Gatlin gun, 40mm Bofors cannon, and a 105mm howitzer cannon (af.mil, 2016).
This aircraft is one of the best close air support assets in the United States inventory. This also
makes this it a high demand asset in

The Bell UH–1 Huey helicopter (Fig 1) is an aircraft that played a big role in U.S. history and its
preservation in our museums should continue for years to come. The UH–1 Huey served as medical
evacuation, command and control, air assault, personnel transportation, materiel transportation and
as a gunship platform. For almost a decade (1965–1973), the Huey operated in the hostile
environment of Vietnam and its mission was of great value to the U.S. Armed Forces. The UH–1
Huey is evidence of how important aviation assets are in the battlefield. Having the UH–1 Huey in
our museums as part of our history is very important for the aviation community, our veterans and
future generations. In 1952, the United States Army required a utility and medical evacuation
helicopter to accomplish its mission. Therefore, Bell Helicopters developed the first Huey to meet
the United States Army's requirement, but it was not until 1956 that flew for the first time. The UH–
1 received its nickname "Huey" by its original designation, HU–1. In 1962, the official ... Show

Gardez in Eastern Afghanistan, Operation Anaconda took place early March 2002. Operation
Anaconda, to this day, stands as the largest reported ground action in the Afghan war. This 17–day
battle led to eight U.S. casualties and over 50 wounded. Operation Anaconda is viewed as a success
due to coalition forces being able to kill and root out several hundred Taliban and al Qaeda fighters,

Air support had planned to bombard enemy positions for 55 minutes; however, miscommunication
between Texas 14 and higher led to a short bombardment and a total of six bombs being dropped.
TF HAMMER was unsuccessful in entering the valley due to a heavy amount of small arms fire and
mortar attacks. The lack of air support triggered by bad communication frustrated Afghan and
Special Forces alike and led to Afghan trucks being hit heavily by pre–registered mortar fire on
known choke points by Taliban and al Qaeda fighters. Unity of command is crucial in conducting a
successful military operation: communication flows smoothly through a unified command, but
unfortunately for a non–unified command, the reverse effect holds true. Another principle of war
that was violated several times was the element of surprise. This had to do, however, with a direct
correlation to communication and unity of command. In the late hours of 3 March 2002, the SEAL
team, MAKO 30 was picked up by a MH–47 heading east of the peak of Takur Ghar, which is the

Operation Anaconda was a major U.S. and Afghan combined offensive that took place in March of
2002. Named after the snake that would coil around its victim and squeeze the life out of them
before devouring them, this was the intent of the offensive. This offensive would lead us into further
development as a fighting force that would need to adjust, so that our decisions bring our Soldiers

already had forces in the Afghanistan area of responsibility (AOR). These pre–positioned troops
were the result of intelligence reports that showed the Taliban and al Qaeda were hiding out in the
Shahi–Khot valley in Afghanistan. CENTCOM'S poor task organization for the multiple coalition

The lack of tactical control (TACON) with the amount of different forces engaged in the operation
made command authority an issue. (Fleri, Howard, Hukill, & Searle, 2013)
The Joint Task Force (JTF) did not have the TACON it should have had with the SOF. Prior to the
start of the JTF Mountain, the SOF operated under the control of the Joint Special Operations Task
Force and bypassed the Joint Commander. SOF groups needed to be inserted at a time when the air
support was not bombing the valley.
Task force command and control (C2) was a major issue when key staff elements were not present.
The continuing air support need for the attack on the valley required more air controllers than
CENTCOM would allow the JTF to have in the AOR. Without enough air liaisons for each group

and CH communities flew low level altitudes to avoid detection and more technical weapon systems
designed to take out aircraft at high altitudes. In OEF, lift assets had to offset from small arms and
RPG fire by flying at higher altitudes. This reduced risk of flying into obstacles, workload, and
stress, but also made detecting the enemy harder. Many lift assets had a difficult time adjusting to
higher altitudes and some that did became complacent that high altitudes would keep them safe from
threats, but that assertion proved deadly too. The better of two evils kept the majority of the lift

The purpose of this paper is to identify the uses and application of mission command within
Operation Anaconda. Operation Anaconda took place in the Shahikot Valley of eastern Afghanistan
in early March of 2002. The ground commander selected to lead the operation was Major General
(MG) Hagenbeck of the 10th Mountain Division, and for the purpose of this operation, Coalition
and Joint Task Force (CJTF) Mountain. Due to the limited number of troops under his command
currently available in Afghanistan, MG Hagenbeck was given command in addition to one of his
own organic battalions, the 3rd Brigade, 101st Air Assault Division, some Special Operations Force
(SOF) units, and Coalition Forces. This paper will identify MG Hagenbeck's, his staff's, and higher
command's use of the mission command principles during this operation. The principles of mission
command are accept prudent risk, use mission orders, exercise disciplined initiative, provide a clear
commander's intent, create shared understanding, and lastly, build cohesive teams through mutual

The simulators used today are extremely accurate as to the limitations of people and equipment, and
as advances in technology improve so do the simulators, as they become more and more realistic.
Computer game technology is also responsible for these improvements; today's video game consoles
have many times the computing power than the military's simulators a few years ago.2 The army has
even developed its own video game based on the simulators it uses for combat training. Americas
Army is more than just a shoot–em–up game; it is built to portray a real soldiers life, everything
from basic training to choosing a career. According to one of the games designers, Lt. Col. Casey
Wardynski, the game took over two years and around $8 million dollars (USD) to develop, but the
main point of the game is education of real Army life, and is said to be the most realistic game ever
developed. Simulators cannot however depict every aspect of military life, dealing with other team
members, salty commanders, and there is nothing to simulate being cold, tired and hungry at the end
of the day. All in all however, simulators are a vital part of today's military training and operations.
In the near future, if it is not already possible, I would not be surprised if a simulator can be
developed for any situation by simply inputting a given situation, and the soldiers will be able to use
the simulator before going into the actual combat situation.

The UH–60 Black Hawk has been in service for the better part of three decades. The Army has
invested into a new program called Future Vertical Lift (FVL). This program will develop a
replacement for the United States Armed Forces rotary wing aircraft that include the UH–60 Black
Hawk, AH–64 Apache, and CH–47 Chinook. The aim of the program is to develop an airframe that
will combine several roles into one aircraft, effectively cutting down costs for the military. Many
different design concepts are in in development. Companies such as Sikorsky, Boeing, Bell, and
Lockheed Martin are all building rotorcraft flight demonstrators for 2017. The Army hopes to retire
their aging aircraft with an airframe that can encompass all aspects of heavy lift, utility, and attack
into one common design at a much more affordable price. "The new helicopter should be faster,
more agile, and carry more troops and cargo father than ever before" (Mizokami, 2016). The
Vietnam War, the first airmobile war spawned the combat helicopter. The Bell UH–1 Iroquois or
simply known as the Huey provided that air mobility. Primarily designed as a medical platform it
did not possess all the requirements that fulfill all the United States Army's requirements. The
military had a need for an improved and more capable aircraft to fill the shoes of the Huey. In 1972,

Introduction Operation Anaconda was the first major joint combat operation against the war on
terror that the US was committed to winning. This operation would test our military's readiness for
joint operations against a hardened and willing adversary. The primary mission was to kill/capture
Taliban/Al Qaeda forces occupying towns and villages in the vicinity of Shahi Khot in order to gain

Reports from intelligence indicated that 150 to 250 enemy fighters would be in the objective area.8
Execution 10th Mountain Division's Commander, General Hagenbeck became the Combined Joint
Task Force Commander. CJTF Mountain would be operating out of Bagram Air Base in
Afghanistan. Colonel Mulholland was the Special Forces Commander also located in Afghanistan.
They both agreed that a cordon was needed around the valley and slowly tighten in on the Taliban
forces. The mission was appropriately named Operation Anaconda.9 Conventional forces were
brought in to increase manpower. Leaders at all levels agreed that the local Afghan fighters along
with our own would not be sufficient. Units from the 101st Airborne Division in addition to 10th
