Paper On Charles Eames
One does not think the name Charles Eames without considering his other half Ray Eames. Ranked among the elite of American designers, they were
one of the largest contributors to what we know as modernism today. "their pronouncements on design emphasized the centrality of function in the use
of the technologies of mass production to make quality goods cheaper and more affordable." Charles was not successful just an architect, also in
furniture design, film and exhibition design all of which brought him international acclaim. They found their most success in furniture design.
Regrdless of their success Charles preferred the word architect to designer, he believed it implied a kind of structure, analysis, as well as a tradition

He preferred the distinction because of "what it implies. It implies a structure, a kind of analysis, as well as a kind of tradition behind it." In 1945 John
Entenza, using his magazine Art & Architecture, started theCase Study Houses Program as part of his attempts to further modernism. The Case Study
Houses "aimed to produce contemporary solutions to house design and to offer prototypes from which low– and medium–cost housing could be
developed." Charles was involved in designing two Case Study Houses, both located in Pacific Palisades, his own house as well as John Entenza's. The
Eames house was designed with Ray, with initial contributions from Eero, and the second Entenza house was fabricated through contributions of both
Charles and Eero Saarinen. They created two houses that shared a site, architect, and basic steel frame, but differed completely in form. They have been
called "technological twins but architectural opposites."
The Eames house focused on the American Dream of anyone having the ability to own their own house on their own land. Their original goal to
provide low–cost housing was starting to develop, using prefabricated steel to develop one of the first houses of its kind. It reflected so much of Charles
and Ray Eames. In their brief of the house they expressed

The Traditional Architectural Style in the Early 19th...
In this essay I am aim to explore Pugin's dissent from tradition through his ideas, inspiration, and his most important works and their meaning. To
dissent from tradition is to defy a stultifying tradition or convention, which leads to new, daring styles (Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p.109).
The 'traditional' architectural style in the early 19th Century, in Great Britain was classicism, inspired by ancient Greece and associated with
democracy as well as with the French revolution (Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p. 112). Pugin, called this classical style 'the new square style'
(Figure 4.7, in Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p.123) and argued that it lacked authenticity of Great Britain (Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008,
p.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pugin found his inspiration while travelling to other European countries, particularly in Germany, where the Roman Catholic Church was predominant.
(LЕ±beck, St Chad's and Religious Art, 2009).
'Building without teaching and explaining is almost useless', Pugin stated, to stress out the importance of writing about architecture. In his written
works, he strongly attacked the era or Reformation and Protestantism saying that 'men must learn that the period hitherto called dark and ignorant far
excelled our age and wisdom ...' (Pugin, 2003(1842) pp16–17, in Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p.120) and looked down on the neo–classicism
of his time (Figure 4.7, Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p.123). In his book 'Contrasts'; he called the current classic style a 'decay of taste'. In the
book, he used plates which contrasted the Middle Ages, 14th and 15th Century, with 19th Century. In one example, he presented the Middle Age
chapel in all its glory and with a focus on the beautiful altar, while the 19th Century chapel looks more like a theatre and as though it lacks the spiritual
feel (Plate 2.4.7, Illustration book, p. 64). The former one highly resembles the St. Chad's cathedral that Pugin designed later on in life (Introduction, St
Chad's and Religious Art, 2009). The two styles of chapels also meant different functioning– while the central plan of the Protestant Church put the
preacher in the middle and surrounded with

Whatever is new, Is bad : Historical Perspectives on the Colonial Revival in Progressive Era America The Colonial Revival is a phenomenon that

How Did Thomas Jefferson Influence Architecture
Among the three categories of colonial time architects in America, Thomas Jefferson, as previously mentioned, was a "gentleman amateur" . Yet he
was a professional amateur. Besides his perfectionism like Palladio, his taste was another key element that allowed him to reach a professional level of
being. Although we, as audience today, may read him as anarchitect with a political intention, most likely Jefferson chose Roman style just because of
his taste. Taste is a direct, personal and discriminate impression that is embedded in our background and motivates us to decide likeness and unlikeness
unconsciously. "We are capable of immediate appreciation, of a spontaneous emotional response, of rejecting things in a flash." In Jefferson's case, he
embraced Roman scared architecture style and rejected British Gothic style since his unconscious mind believed in Roman cultural and political aspects
more than the British one. The majority of architects don't learn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Moreover, it is valuable to be "up–to–date" because it leads architecture toward the future. Many architecture pieces after Thomas Jefferson was inspired
by Jeffersonian. Some examples were directly influenced by Jeffersonian were several university buildings like "Grand Auditorium" in Tsinghua
University in Beijing, Peabody College in Vanderbilt University in Tenseness or Various buildings, University of Mary Washington, etc. Also, a
successful design genre could influence architects later on to combine it with another styles. Another influential architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe who
led Greek revival around the same time period was a friend of Jefferson. He embraced British classism and combined it with Jefferson's styles to claim
his opinion of American architecture. American architecture grew more and more diversely and independently from European classism with architects

Compare And Contrast Indian Architecture And Japanese...
In any well–developed region and national culture there are periods of rejection of the past and periods of revival. These periods are often reflected
through architecture as architects, developers, engineers, lay people and even the national governments seek to reflect history with the inclusion of
modernity, meaning modern buildings with elements of tradition as well as all the modern amenities sought by users. In an architectural sense much of
the focus is on theory within the academy, while the actual development of a great deal of architecture is not produced by university trained architects.
There are few better national examples than Japan and India as they seek through laws and standards as well as architectural artistic vision to reinvent
the visions of the past with modern buildings that meet modern needs including infrastructural needs to express safety, convenience and ergonomics
but do not deny regionalism.
The greatest challenge for both India and Japan in the modern world of architecture is to define what is regional and what is modern and make it fit in
a global architectural vision, without framing a loss of national identity as a natural outgrowth. In both India and Japan the architectural industry
including not just university trained architects relying heavily on theory and international trends but on lay designers who often make up the bulk of
national designers and builders, struggle with the marriage of international views and standards in

Rufus Stillman House
For the critical essay assignment I specifically chose the building called the Rufus Stillman House. The House is located in Litchfield, Connecticut and
was built in 1950 by the architect Marcel Breuer. Marcel Breuer became acquainted with this couple, Rufus and Leslie Stillmen, in 1949. They became
acquainted when Breuer's work of his demonstration house that was on display in a courtyard at the Museum of Modern Art, which is located in New
York. The couple hired Marcel Breuer to design a modern house for their property in Litchfield. The Stillman House was the resulting structure.
The structure was built in 1950 and is known as Stillman House I. The design of the house brought together the mix of modern style and Colonial
Revival, the house is considered to be mid–century modern style while it was built in a town that is primarily used to Colonial Revival style. The
house contains an outdoor swimming pool with a mural painted by Breuer's friend, Alexander Calder. The Stillman sold this house, the original, when
they moved into the second home that Breuer built for them, called Stillman II, and then decided to purchase it back and continue to reside there.
Breuer built two other houses for them, along with this one, however, Stillman I seemed to be the favorite of all three.

Life in Colonial America
During colonial times life would not have been anything like it is today. They would not have a cell phone, computer or a global positioning system.
The family would wake up to begin their day with chores depending on their sex, location, age and, the families' social class. Families were large for
various reasons – help on the farm, most children died before the age of five. Childbirth was extremely dangerous for women of the day. Doctors
did not deliver infants. That job belonged to midwives. Today women would have an epidural for pain. Back then woman would bite a stick or
follow the old wives' tales such as placing a knife under the bed to cut the pain. After the birth, depending on the family's wealth, they would feast
to help the mother regain her strength. The mother would rest for three to four weeks before returning to her duties as a wife and mother.
Someone from a lower social standing would only rest two or three days at most before returning to her daily work. The infant would be dressed in
swaddling gowns then later in dresses. Infants and toddlers would wear dresses and long gowns until the age of five regardless of their sex. At the
age of five, girls would begin learning how to cook and sew among other household chores. Boys would also begin chores, following their father and
other men's example around the farm. If they came from a wealthy family, then a tutor would teach the child. Females who were highly educated had a

Development Of Hybrid Colonial Architecture
Colonial architecture is a combination architectural style of a country that has been adapted from the other countries characteristics, methods and
influences. The colonists built settlements and create hybrid designs that include their countries of origin with the design styles. Europeans came to
Southeast Asia during 16th century. The colonial vision was effectively imposed on Southeast Asia. At the beginning of the20th century, most of the
Southeast Asia countries were controlled by the British, Dutch, French and the Americans. Under this colonial rule, the late 19th and early 20th
centuries was a period of fast development of such as new architectural styles, modern construction methods and techniques, railways, roads, etc. They
changed the configurations, construction and methods to make the buildings more sustainable and maintained.
This essay focuses on the development of hybrid colonial architecture in early 20th century in Southeast Asia. The essay investigates the different styles
of buildings in different locations and explains how these types of architecture combined both European and local origins. It explains the Dutch style in
Indonesia and the British style in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur/Malaysia while giving an example building to these styles.

Martin Van Buren once said, "Our country presents on every side the evidences of that continued favor under whose auspices it, has gradually risen
from a few feeble and dependent colonies to a prosperous and powerful confederacy." America wouldn't have prospered into the powerful confederacy
Van Buren describes it to be without the values and ideas of America's colonial past. America's present is best understood to be based upon British
culture and government. However, colonists fought for freedom from the suffocating British throne, they tolerated religious freedom, and their
government was founded on republican views. Therefore, America's present is constructed of values and ideas opposite of what the British taught.

"Whatever is new, Is bad": Historical Perspectives on the Colonial Revival in Progressive Era America
The Colonial Revival is a phenomenon that materialized as a national expression of

more about ideology, but most often manifested itself through decorative arts and architecture.
Elements of pseudo colonial furniture, arts and architecture symbolically served as tools to
promote the republican ideas of democracy, patriotism and moral superiority.
In many ways the Colonial Revival was a direct reaction to the side effects of
Industrialization and progress. Ironically, frequently participants of the revival used modern
techniques as a means to accomplish their singular goal. Historian Alan Axelrod argues,
"Colonialism is not a surface phenomenon, a thin veneer over the real body of American life,

Historians examine the movement from various perspectives; the Colonial Revival as a

How Did The British Influence On American Culture
The transformation of administration architecture during independence and colonization
Politics has always been closely related to the transformations of architecture styles. The transition of one region's political dynamics will certainly
influence the exterior forms and the structural connotations of the symbolic buildings. Different kind of political changes will also result different kind
of architectural stylistic shift. The independence of Turkey as a new nation and the colonization of India by the British empire reflected the influence
of political changes in architecture and how new architecture style is introduced during such periods.
The independence of Turkey and its early development as a country full of energetic youth required a combination of two almost contradictory ideals :
In order to illustrate its disassociation with the past Ottoman authority the new government desired international style which expresses scientific
modernization and political liberation; However, the Kemalists also wanted to preserve a certain degree of cultural root in order to boost, if not,

Grant Wood's American Gothic is one of the most famous paintings in the history of American art. The painting brought Wood almost instant fame
after being exhibited for the first time at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1930. It is probably the most reproduced and parodied works of art, and has
become a staple within American pop–culture. The portrait of what appears to be a couple, standing solemnly in front of their mid–western home
seems to be a simplistic representation of rural America. As simple as it sounds, when looking deeper into this image, it reveals something much more
complex. The first thing to notice about this painting is how incredibly involved and realistic the brushwork is. The couple's faces are so delicately...

It is almost a reflection of the man's trident. That same pitchfork shape also appears in the window of the house that sits in between both figure's
heads. Repetition can also be seen in the dotted pattern of the woman's outfit, which also appears in the material of the curtain that hangs in the
house's window. The echo of verticals in this painting is also strong. The faces and bodies of the figures seem to be stretched, and narrowed. The
pitchfork's slender prongs and the green stripes on the man's shirt also add to the elongation of their frame. The copious amounts of vertical wood
boards that make up the house and the barn, keep the viewer's eye moving up and down the picture plane. Wood's use of verticality in this painting
is overwhelming. There is also a striking luminosity to the painting. The man and the woman's faces appear to slightly glow, as if you can really
see the reflection of the sun beaming off of their skin. This was achieved by a complex method of applying glazes. Wood would apply a layer of oil
paint, allow it to dry, and then varnish it. This tedious process would be repeated numerous times. It was a process perfected by the 16th century
Venetian painter, Titian. The series of glazes seems to have created an overwhelming sense of depth and radiance within the paint. Wood's use of
glazes is not the only reference to early Italian painters. It is clear that Wood was inspired by Northern

An Architect, Former U.s. President Of The National...
As an architect, former U.S. president Thomas Jefferson came up with architectural designs that came to define and influence American architecture
and culture in general. This form of Neo–Palladianism and Neo–classism architecture came to be known as Jeffersonian architecture. Some of his
notable structures include Monticello (his home), Poplar Forest which was his retreat, the University of Virginiawhich he founded as well as other
homes which he designed for his political allies and friends, a good example being Barboursville. His style gained popularity in the early American
period. Similarly, it was during the same time that the more conventional Greek Revival architecture was gaining popularity with his help. With his
architectural designs, he later came to define America's national identity and culture.
Background
Most famously recognized as "the father of the National Architecture" in America,Thomas Jefferson sought to make American ideals and its culture
unique from that of Europe, from where they had their origins ("Architecture is My Delight" n.p). At the time Jefferson was developing his
architectural skills, America was undergoing its revolution and therefore it needed an identity of its own, something that made it standout; and that is
what Jefferson had set out to achieve. In a letter he wrote to James Madison regarding the project of the Virginia State Capitol while on a tour of
Europe (Paris, France), Jefferson states, "I am an enthusiast on the subject of

America was "traditional in its basic social relationships and in its cultural society." (Wood 11). Wood even suggests that, "in some respects colonial
society was more traditional than that of the mother country" (12). With the concept of the traditionalism of the colonial world, Wood declares the era
to be "pre–modern." Pre–modernism can be defined as the era before industrialization, which radically altered the social contract within families and

Spanish Revival architecture was most popular between 1915 and 1931. The Spanish craze swept the country and you can find examples of these

The kit house companies joined the fray and added a few models with Spanish flavor. Spanish Revival homes typically had very expensive design

The French Quarter New Orleans
The French Quarter, one of the oldest neighborhoods in New Orleans, is one of the most classic and flourishing areas in Louisiana. It is also
known as Vieux CarrГ©, which is French for "Old Square". It was established by the French in 1718 and it was a valuable site for trade because of
its location along the Mississippi River. It was first in the hands of the French, then it was given to the Spanish, then the Louisiana Purchase took place,
and ever since it has been in the hands of the United States. Le Vieux CarrГ©; (theFrench Quarter) is a spirited tourist attraction for the city of New
Orleans that is steeped in history, and has made and continues to make a tremendous cultural and financial impact on the city's economy. The French
Quarter was founded in 1718 as a 70 squared military–style grid. Its founder, Jean–Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, who was a French Canadian naval
officer, got together with two other French engineers to design the city's street plan. His plan was to construct a central square that was surrounded by
a 6x9 city block grid. At the center, a church, a rectory and a prison were constructed. The French Quarter still maintains historical buildings, such as
the Church of St. Louis and the Ursuline Convent. It has incorporated a style of urbanism for four centuries, which became a part of the city during the
Civil War and Reconstruction. In 1803, the Louisiana Purchase transferred the colony to the U.S. beginning an era of prosperity. The victory of

John Butler Becoming America Summary
In his book, Becoming America: The Revolution Before 1776, Jon Butler is arguing that prerevolutionary America was much more modern than it is
often thought to have been. He argues throughout the book that the people, economy, politics, material wants and needs, and spiritual beliefs within the
colonies were all very similar to those in modern America. Butler discusses the diversity of people seen within the colonies that was not only
unprecedented at the time, but is still not seen in some countries today. He states that by 1703 there was no ethnic or national majority within the
colonies and that in certain areas, a majority could only be found by grouping together all white settlers. Butler also points out that by 1760, American
Indian populations had decreased dramatically and were occupying very small geographic areas surrounded by European settlers. This caused many
Native American populations to... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He describes the colonial economy as more rapidly growing and complex than any other economy in this time period. He states that the economy was
incredibly competitive, but that the gap between the rich and the poor accelerated more rapidly in prerevolutionary America than any other time in
American history. Butler also stresses that the economy of the colonies at this time relied greatly on farming, but states that after 1680 Americans
began farming in a more modern and commercial way. This meant that farms were not only producing enough to maintain their household, but were
also producing excess crops and livestock that they were able to sell for profit. Butler argues that the southern colonies led the way in the
advancement of the colonial economy in unexpected ways. Farmers in the southern colonies were able to manipulate the economy by diversifying the
amount of crops they grew in order to safeguard against price drops in certain crops due to excess

Martin Frobisher's Heredity: The Anglican Church Of Canada
The Anglican Church of Canada has its heredity in the Church of England, which separated from the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th century
(Anglican Church of Canada, 2015). The church sealed certain customs although it is influenced by the Protestant Reformation; this includes early
church creeds and the progression of bishops from the line of the apostles. As a result of this history,Anglicanism is at times referred to as "Reformed
Catholicism" (Anglican Church of Canada, 2015). Anglicanism travelled out of the country with British colonial development; in 1578 near modern

Georgian Style In Colonial America
Georgian Design and the Beginnings of America The American Georgian style ruled American design from about 1714 to 1830. The Georgian style
was inspired by English and European styles of the time, relied on classical elements, and took inspiration from the Italian Renaissance. Georgian
design was located mainly along the eastern seaboard, where "the old styles gradually gave way to the Georgian, and there came for the first time a
large degree of uniformity to American architecture" (Wertenbaker, 1943, p. 66). Craftsmanship was a big part of early American life, and people liked
to show off their quality homes, eventually displaying their stations by "maintaining codes of dress, speech, and behavior" (Architectural Style Guide).
Georgian American design had many different influences while adapting to suit the settlers needs. There are several beautiful examples of this style
still intact today. While the Georgian American style was one of the earliest styles in Colonial America, it actually preceded by a simpler style, and...

Throughout the years, tensions started growing between colonists and English soldiers. At the same time, the French and Indian war waged on
between England and the people occupying modern day Canada. The loss of the French and Indian war meant that England had spent a lot of money
that they now needed to salvage. As a result, King George III started taxing the colonists; he also used the taxes to try to regain control that he had lost
(The Boston Tea Party). There were several different taxes imposed, but the attempt to tax tea was the last straw. The result was the Boston Tea Party
(1773). This was one of the acts that lead to the start of the American Revolutionary War. The war started in 1775 and continued through 1783. The

SEMESTER II SESSION 2012/2013
GKA 2043 Research Methodology
Title:
The Study of Gothic Style and Its Influence on Modern Day Concept Arts
Introduction:
Gothic art flourished from the 12th century to the 16th century in Europe in response of the Byzantine and Romanesque tradition. Although Gothic is
associated with arts, its most prominent use is in architecture, mainly for its pointed arch and flying buttress. To this day, the Gothic style is taken as a
'label' for visual arts such as concept art designs, yet the meaning stray from the original context, thus becoming rarely accurate.
In this study, one of the objectives is to discover how a concept artist conveys moods through gothic style and the feels in his or her concept art ... Show

To figure out the ways of an artist specialized in concept arts producing gothic–esque atmosphere and effect in influencing one's perception of
gothic–based elements
3. To find out how Gothic style has evolved throughout the eras, from the original – early period to modern era, and also to learn how to apply the style
accordingly in creating future artworks
4. To discover whether a concept artist's way and theory of art suited to be made as guidelines for art students in producing artwork
Methodology:
In context of art and style, the suitable research type for this study, "Gothic Style and Its Influence in Modern Day Concept Art", is "Qualitative
Studies". The study is aimed to explain phenomena or happening in a verbal manner and/or written descriptions rather than complex experimentation or
hypothesis by using numerical value ("Quantitative Studies"). In simpler words, a qualitative approach will be conducted to study the influence of
Gothic style in modern day concept art.
Definition: Gothic and Concept Art
Gothic Art is concerned with the painting, sculpture, architecture, and music characteristic of the second of two great international eras that flourished
in western and central Europe during the Middle Ages. Gothic Art defines much of the late medieval art that grew out of the Byzantine and
Romanesque traditions. These were very formal artistic traditions with rigorous religious conventions that limited the personal creativity of the

Architecture Style And Architecture Of The Taj Mahal
CHAPTER 1
1.0 INTRODUCTION A story makes an old building charming. In reality, a pleasing exterior view does not ensure people will be attracted to the
particular heritage building. It is the story behind the heritage building that gives meaning to both building and people. As a heritage building, the
building itself has been passed the test of time and becomes a typical landmark for a city. Hence, the story of the building explained its architecture
style and structure which makes it be a remarkable building. For instance, Sultan Abdul Samad Building (SASB) has a unique architectural design
which is the mixture of several architectural styles. This result is caused by the Charles Edwin Spooner, the state engineer of Public Work Department,
Selangor, who worked in Ceylon before transferred to Selangor. He preferred to design a Mughal–style building on a Classic Renaissance style ground
plan which suggested by A.C. Norman. Moreover, British Victorian style is incorporated into this building's design as the British colonized Malaya.
This story explained its unique architectural structure while gave the new generation a better understanding of the classic architectural style and the
history of Malaysia. Thus, theories, ideas, and ideologies which influenced the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Millford plantation is a historic place located on SC 261, west of Pinewood, SC. Built in 1839–1841, Millford Plantation is considered by many to be
the finest example of Greek revival residential architecture in America. The house is located in such a remote section of rural SC that it comes to a

The Era Of The Industrial Revolution
When the Industrial Revolution started, it resulted in the world changing at a high pace. So, the people started to desire a simpler, and a more stable
time. That's when the revival of ancient architecture started to form. Each type of revival style was associated with a specific architect, for instance,
A.W.N. Pugin was England's leading Gothic revivalist. The revivals of the ancient architecture influenced the architectural designs of many architects
of the time. Two of the most noted architects in the nineteenth century who were influenced by the architectural revivals were: Richard Morris Hunt,
the leading architect to the Beaux Art style; and Henry Hobson Richardson, the father of the Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The ... Show more

Its style combined classical ideas from the ancient Greek, Roman, and Romanesque architecture and deployed their ideas into its architecture (Carven,
7/27/2016). The Beaux's Art style influenced architecture between 1880 and 1920, but its popularity ended with economic hardships from the great
depression. Beaux Arts style emphasized the classical forms and features by showing elaborate details while having heavy masonry, and massive plans.
The Beaux Arts displayed elaborate details by integrating sculpture that was influenced by the Baroque and Rococo styles. It also had classical details
such as pilasters, balustrades, and garlands. It was highly ornamented to the point that an elaborately decorated surface with little areas left
unornamented became the hallmark for the Beaux Arts style (Architectural style of America, n.d.). Also, the Beaux Arts style is symmetrical because it
was influenced by the ancient Greek revival. Columns, arches, vaults, and domes were all elements of the Beaux Arts. They used all of these elements
and characteristics to try and imitate the European Aristocracy houses. Beaux Arts main clients were the "would be American aristocrats" who have
accumulated a massive amount of wealth throughout one or two generations. His main clients had to be the super wealthy people of the time because

Descriptive Essay On My House
When you step into my room, the first thing you will notice is the golden afternoon sunlight fluttering in and dancing around because of the large
sycamore trees outside my window. The window is fairly large, as my house is a Cape Cod style home. The reason for the window being so large is
that it is one of the primary dormer windows on the second floor that front the street. The window is also set in alcove that is approximately two feet
deep, and is framed with white wooden shutters on both sides. I have always been a very optimistic and happy person, and this large window letting in
the golden light of nature is a fantastic representation of my personality.
After taking notice of the soft afternoon light in my room, you will notice two shelves on either side of the alcove They are painted a crisp white color
and contain a slightly wavy pattern of carved wood around the border. You can feel the smooth undulations along the border by slowly moving
your hand along the wood. Perched upon these two sets of shelves are various items from my childhood, old books, books that I am reading, and
photos that I have taken to showcase my photography work. I am an amateur coastal photographer and take pride in displaying my work on my
shelves. It has always been important to me to take pride in my best work. The house I am living in now is not my family's original home, so on these
shelves I also have pictures of my old house and surrounding property. Another important item on my

Gothic Revival: Alexander Jackson Davis, And The Rose Hill...
Architecture has always been an integral part of society and its culture. It not only defines the space of the community that it participates in but it also
shapes the community's place in history. During the 19th century, Gothic Revival became a rapidly growing architectural movement. The Gothic
Revival styles sought to revive medieval Gothic architecture, in contrast to the neoclassical styles prevalent at the time. A new group of architects
began popularizing picturesque styles and started taking inspiration from nature. A style was built more honestly using natures own colors and
materials, blending the architecture harmoniously into its surrounding. The Lyndhurst Mansion designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis
(1803–1892) and The Rose Hill Plantation House built in 1860 by Edward Brickell White (1806–1882) are two examples that embody the picturesque
Gothic Revival. Alexander Jackson Davis was one of America's leading figure in American architecture. Davis designed state capitals, colleges,
several hospitals, a prison, and a number of houses which ranged from humble gatekeeper's lodges to elaborate country villas ("Donoghue, John
Cornelius.") He introduced and developed new ideas and forms and was inspired by many styles from the past, including ancient Egypt, classical
forms of Greece, and picturesque medieval England. In the 1830's, Davis became best known for his work in the picturesque style, relating the houses
to their landscape settings and opening up the

Pre Colonial America Summary
Pre–Modern Colonial America In The Radicalism of the American Revolution, Gordan S. Wood creates an in
–depth analysis of why colonial America
could be classified as a pre–modern society. He presents a thorough argument for how hierarchal trends and patriarchal dependency of the colonists
emphasized the more traditional culture of the early Americans. The colonists had created a society in which there was a deep prevalence for British
customs, such as, reverence for the king, the inheritance of land and status, the strength of a household, and the importance of rank (Wood 12, 16, 46,
18). Before the revolution, America resembled its native England; once they had severed ties and moved forward with their own form of government
with confidence, pre–modern America initiated the first steps to become a truly independent and modern nation. ... Show more content on

By building up their family trees, colonial Americans were able to use their kinship as an advantage in a variety of ways including, but not limited to,
the manipulation of politics (Wood 48). This was due to the patriarchal dependency of most of the citizens; in colonial America the familial household
was the center of society and the strength of it. The patriarchal tradition of the society creates a system in which the institutions mimic households; that
created a society that was dependent on a head because no man was independent in and of himself

Paper On Charles Eames

  • 1. Paper On Charles Eames One does not think the name Charles Eames without considering his other half Ray Eames. Ranked among the elite of American designers, they were one of the largest contributors to what we know as modernism today. "their pronouncements on design emphasized the centrality of function in the use of the technologies of mass production to make quality goods cheaper and more affordable." Charles was not successful just an architect, also in furniture design, film and exhibition design all of which brought him international acclaim. They found their most success in furniture design. Regrdless of their success Charles preferred the word architect to designer, he believed it implied a kind of structure, analysis, as well as a tradition behind it. Along... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He preferred the distinction because of "what it implies. It implies a structure, a kind of analysis, as well as a kind of tradition behind it." In 1945 John Entenza, using his magazine Art & Architecture, started theCase Study Houses Program as part of his attempts to further modernism. The Case Study Houses "aimed to produce contemporary solutions to house design and to offer prototypes from which low– and medium–cost housing could be developed." Charles was involved in designing two Case Study Houses, both located in Pacific Palisades, his own house as well as John Entenza's. The Eames house was designed with Ray, with initial contributions from Eero, and the second Entenza house was fabricated through contributions of both Charles and Eero Saarinen. They created two houses that shared a site, architect, and basic steel frame, but differed completely in form. They have been called "technological twins but architectural opposites." The Eames house focused on the American Dream of anyone having the ability to own their own house on their own land. Their original goal to provide low–cost housing was starting to develop, using prefabricated steel to develop one of the first houses of its kind. It reflected so much of Charles and Ray Eames. In their brief of the house they expressed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Traditional Architectural Style in the Early 19th... In this essay I am aim to explore Pugin's dissent from tradition through his ideas, inspiration, and his most important works and their meaning. To dissent from tradition is to defy a stultifying tradition or convention, which leads to new, daring styles (Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p.109). The 'traditional' architectural style in the early 19th Century, in Great Britain was classicism, inspired by ancient Greece and associated with democracy as well as with the French revolution (Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p. 112). Pugin, called this classical style 'the new square style' (Figure 4.7, in Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p.123) and argued that it lacked authenticity of Great Britain (Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p.... In his written works, he strongly attacked the era or Reformation and Protestantism saying that 'men must learn that the period hitherto called dark and ignorant far excelled our age and wisdom ...' (Pugin, 2003(1842) pp16–17, in Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p.120) and looked down on the neo–classicism of his time (Figure 4.7, Richardson, McKellar, Woods, 2008, p.123). In his book 'Contrasts'; he called the current classic style a 'decay of taste'. In the book, he used plates which contrasted the Middle Ages, 14th and 15th Century, with 19th Century. In one example, he presented the Middle Age chapel in all its glory and with a focus on the beautiful altar, while the 19th Century chapel looks more like a theatre and as though it lacks the spiritual feel (Plate 2.4.7, Illustration book, p. 64). The former one highly resembles the St. Chad's cathedral that Pugin designed later on in life (Introduction, St Chad's and Religious Art, 2009). The two styles of chapels also meant different functioning– while the central plan of the Protestant Church put the preacher in the middle and surrounded with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Historical Perspectives On The Colonial Revival In... Whatever is new, Is bad : Historical Perspectives on the Colonial Revival in Progressive Era America The Colonial Revival is a phenomenon that materialized as a national expression of American culture from the 1870s to the 1940s. Though founded on ideological traditions, it most often manifested itself through decorative arts and architecture. Elements of revival furniture, arts and architecture symbolically served as tools to promote democracy, patriotism most significantly in this context, moral superiority, that reflect republican ideals. In many ways it is a direct response to the results of Industrialization and progress. Historian Alan Axelrod contends, "Colonialism is not a surface phenomenon, a thin veneer over the real body of American life, but a network of communications and linkages that reach deep into American experience and behavior." Historians examine the movement from various perspectives; as a social and cultural movement, its representation in U.S. material culture, and its significance to immigration and nationalism. Noteworthy scholarship includes everything from Alan Axelrod's The Colonial Revival in America from 1985 to Briann G. Greenfield's Out of the Attic: Antiques in Twentieth – Century New England from 2009. Various monographs and essays will be analyzed to determine correlations and points of dissent across the historiography. The Colonial Revival has also been a prevalent area of examination in the museum community as evidenced by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. How Did Thomas Jefferson Influence Architecture Among the three categories of colonial time architects in America, Thomas Jefferson, as previously mentioned, was a "gentleman amateur" . Yet he was a professional amateur. Besides his perfectionism like Palladio, his taste was another key element that allowed him to reach a professional level of being. Although we, as audience today, may read him as anarchitect with a political intention, most likely Jefferson chose Roman style just because of his taste. Taste is a direct, personal and discriminate impression that is embedded in our background and motivates us to decide likeness and unlikeness unconsciously. "We are capable of immediate appreciation, of a spontaneous emotional response, of rejecting things in a flash." In Jefferson's case, he embraced Roman scared architecture style and rejected British Gothic style since his unconscious mind believed in Roman cultural and political aspects more than the British one. Many architecture pieces after Thomas Jefferson was inspired by Jeffersonian. Some examples were directly influenced by Jeffersonian were several university buildings like "Grand Auditorium" in Tsinghua University in Beijing, Peabody College in Vanderbilt University in Tenseness or Various buildings, University of Mary Washington, etc. Also, a successful design genre could influence architects later on to combine it with another styles. Another influential architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe who led Greek revival around the same time period was a friend of Jefferson. He embraced British classism and combined it with Jefferson's styles to claim his opinion of American architecture. American architecture grew more and more diversely and independently from European classism with architects inventing new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Compare And Contrast Indian Architecture And Japanese... In any well–developed region and national culture there are periods of rejection of the past and periods of revival. These periods are often reflected through architecture as architects, developers, engineers, lay people and even the national governments seek to reflect history with the inclusion of modernity, meaning modern buildings with elements of tradition as well as all the modern amenities sought by users. In an architectural sense much of the focus is on theory within the academy, while the actual development of a great deal of architecture is not produced by university trained architects. There are few better national examples than Japan and India as they seek through laws and standards as well as architectural artistic vision to reinvent the visions of the past with modern buildings that meet modern needs including infrastructural needs to express safety, convenience and ergonomics but do not deny regionalism. The greatest challenge for both India and Japan in the modern world of architecture is to define what is regional and what is modern and make it fit in a global architectural vision, without framing a loss of national identity as a natural outgrowth. In both India and Japan the architectural industry including not just university trained architects relying heavily on theory and international trends but on lay designers who often make up the bulk of national designers and builders, struggle with the marriage of international views and standards in ... The house contains an outdoor swimming pool with a mural painted by Breuer's friend, Alexander Calder. The Stillman sold this house, the original, when they moved into the second home that Breuer built for them, called Stillman II, and then decided to purchase it back and continue to reside there. The increasing popularity of colonial influences on contemporary architecture motivated a highly publicized tour of a group of architects in 1877 who observed and recorded Georgian and Federal houses of New England. The simplicity of colonial designs and honest use of materials with more economical plans than the recently popular picturesque homes also contributed to the growing popularity of the style. • 17. Historical Perspectives On The Colonial Revival In... "Whatever is new, Is bad": Historical Perspectives on the Colonial Revival in Progressive Era America The Colonial Revival is a phenomenon that materialized as a national expression of American culture from the 1870s to its peak between 1880 and 1940. The Colonial Revival was more about ideology, but most often manifested itself through decorative arts and architecture. Elements of pseudo colonial furniture, arts and architecture symbolically served as tools to promote the republican ideas of democracy, patriotism and moral superiority. In many ways the Colonial Revival was a direct reaction to the side effects of Industrialization and progress. Ironically, frequently participants of the revival used modern techniques as a means to accomplish their singular goal. Historian Alan Axelrod argues, "Colonialism is not a surface phenomenon, a thin veneer over the real body of American life, but a network of communications and linkages that reach deep into American experience and behavior." Historians examine the movement from various perspectives; the Colonial Revival as a social and cultural movement, its representation in U.S. material culture, and its significance to

How Did The British Influence On American Culture The transformation of administration architecture during independence and colonization Politics has always been closely related to the transformations of architecture styles. The transition of one region's political dynamics will certainly influence the exterior forms and the structural connotations of the symbolic buildings. Different kind of political changes will also result different kind of architectural stylistic shift. The independence of Turkey as a new nation and the colonization of India by the British empire reflected the influence of political changes in architecture and how new architecture style is introduced during such periods. The independence of Turkey and its early development as a country full of energetic youth required a combination of two almost contradictory ideals : In order to illustrate its disassociation with the past Ottoman authority the new government desired international style which expresses scientific modernization and political liberation; However, the Kemalists also wanted to preserve a certain degree of cultural root in order to boost, if not, maintain nationalistic devotion of its citizens. The painting brought Wood almost instant fame after being exhibited for the first time at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1930. It is probably the most reproduced and parodied works of art, and has become a staple within American pop–culture. The portrait of what appears to be a couple, standing solemnly in front of their mid–western home seems to be a simplistic representation of rural America. Repetition can also be seen in the dotted pattern of the woman's outfit, which also appears in the material of the curtain that hangs in the house's window. The echo of verticals in this painting is also strong. The faces and bodies of the figures seem to be stretched, and narrowed. The pitchfork's slender prongs and the green stripes on the man's shirt also add to the elongation of their frame. The copious amounts of vertical wood boards that make up the house and the barn, keep the viewer's eye moving up and down the picture plane. Wood's use of verticality in this painting is overwhelming. There is also a striking luminosity to the painting. The man and the woman's faces appear to slightly glow, as if you can really see the reflection of the sun beaming off of their skin. This was achieved by a complex method of applying glazes. Wood would apply a layer of oil paint, allow it to dry, and then varnish it. This tedious process would be repeated numerous times. It was a process perfected by the 16th century Venetian painter, Titian. The series of glazes seems to have created an overwhelming sense of depth and radiance within the paint. As an architect, former U.S. president Thomas Jefferson came up with architectural designs that came to define and influence American architecture and culture in general. This form of Neo–Palladianism and Neo–classism architecture came to be known as Jeffersonian architecture. Some of his notable structures include Monticello (his home), Poplar Forest which was his retreat, the University of Virginiawhich he founded as well as other homes which he designed for his political allies and friends, a good example being Barboursville. His style gained popularity in the early American period. Similarly, it was during the same time that the more conventional Greek Revival architecture was gaining popularity with his help. Butler discusses the diversity of people seen within the colonies that was not only unprecedented at the time, but is still not seen in some countries today. He states that by 1703 there was no ethnic or national majority within the colonies and that in certain areas, a majority could only be found by grouping together all white settlers. Like skylights, dormer windows are a source of light and ventilation for top floors, but unlike skylights they also increase the amount of headroom in the room and allow for more usable space. c. This Double story house has a green edge around the house making it very exceptional compare to the other houses. Walk along another ten steps, a long range of two story (identical design/built) buildings along the left side of the street (all Gable Roofing) thinking to myself they would have all been built by the same designer or builder. Following the road and turn left into Austin St right till the end and turn right again is Majorbanks St. At the end of Majorbanks St, this very strange like architecture has taken my breath away (As I have never seen anything like this in Wellington before). Turning around and walk back about one hundred sixty meters turn right till we see Hawker St and continue walking. Turn left into Roxburgh St. At the strange 90 degree turn in the street we can see Copthorne Hotel. • 41. Gothic Revival: Alexander Jackson Davis, And The Rose Hill... Architecture has always been an integral part of society and its culture. It not only defines the space of the community that it participates in but it also shapes the community's place in history. During the 19th century, Gothic Revival became a rapidly growing architectural movement. The Gothic Revival styles sought to revive medieval Gothic architecture, in contrast to the neoclassical styles prevalent at the time. A new group of architects began popularizing picturesque styles and started taking inspiration from nature. A style was built more honestly using natures own colors and materials, blending the architecture harmoniously into its surrounding. The Lyndhurst Mansion designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis (1803–1892) and The Rose Hill Plantation House built in 1860 by Edward Brickell White (1806–1882) are two examples that embody the picturesque Gothic Revival. Alexander Jackson Davis was one of America's leading figure in American architecture. Davis designed state capitals, colleges, several hospitals, a prison, and a number of houses which ranged from humble gatekeeper's lodges to elaborate country villas ("Donoghue, John Cornelius.") He introduced and developed new ideas and forms and was inspired by many styles from the past, including ancient Egypt, classical forms of Greece, and picturesque medieval England. In the 1830's, Davis became best known for his work in the picturesque style, relating the houses to their landscape settings and opening up the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 42. Pre Colonial America Summary Pre–Modern Colonial America In The Radicalism of the American Revolution, Gordan S. Wood creates an in –depth analysis of why colonial America could be classified as a pre–modern society. He presents a thorough argument for how hierarchal trends and patriarchal dependency of the colonists emphasized the more traditional culture of the early Americans. The colonists had created a society in which there was a deep prevalence for British customs, such as, reverence for the king, the inheritance of land and status, the strength of a household, and the importance of rank (Wood 12, 16, 46, 18). Before the revolution, America resembled its native England; once they had severed ties and moved forward with their own form of government with confidence, pre–modern America initiated the first steps to become a truly independent and modern nation. ... By building up their family trees, colonial Americans were able to use their kinship as an advantage in a variety of ways including, but not limited to, the manipulation of politics (Wood 48). This was due to the patriarchal dependency of most of the citizens; in colonial America the familial household was the center of society and the strength of it. The patriarchal tradition of the society creates a system in which the institutions mimic households; that created a society that was dependent on a head because no man was independent in and of himself ...
