Calypso Research Paper
The Baddest of Them All People always talk about how heroes are so great. But the real reason the hero does or completes his legendary acts are
because of the villain. The villain is what causes the problem, and makes up the entire story. So even though there have been many unique, grueling
villains throughout time, to memorable ones are the White Witch, the villain from the book The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Calypso, a
beautiful but evil woman from The Odyssey. But when these two vile women are compared, the White Witch has the coldest heart of the two for
many reasons. It is true that Calypso is obviously a villain because she is greedy, selfish, and holds people captive, but she is an empty cupboard when

The White Witch tries to take over Narnia and casts an eternal winter over the magical land.To start off, The White Witch is a greater villain than
Calypso because she is greedy. According to the text, "Then you will know that the boy belongs to me. (turns to crowd) That boy (points to Edmund)
will die on the Stone Table"(The Chronicles of Narnia Episode I, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe). This shows that the White Witch is a greater
villain than Calypso because while Calypso did show she was greedy when not wanting to give up Odysseus, The White Witch was greedy in taking an
innocent boy, and killing him.Equally fascinating, The White Witch is an obviously greater villain than Calypso because she is selfish. Stated in the
text,"I'm kidnapping you. It's the White Witch, the one that makes it always winter, and never Christmas" (The Chronicles of Narnia Episode I, The
Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe). This shows that the White Witch is a greater villain than Calypso because while she is making everyone miserable
in not celebrating Christmas, Calypso is only not understanding men. Unquestionably important,The White Witch is an above class, more outstanding
villain than Calypso because she holds people captive. In the text, "The Former

She nursed Odysseus and Telemachus when they were babies. She also served as the master's confidante. She is very loyal to both Telemachus and
Odysseus. Upon Telemachus search to find his father she keeps his journey a secret from his mother Penelope (Homer 2.104–105). She also keeps
Odysseus identity a secret after recognizing a scar on his leg. In book 19 she states "that scar as the old nurse cradle his leg and her hand passed
down she felt it. She said to him you are Odysseus, oh dear boy I didn't know you before, not until I touched the body of my king" (Homer 19.405).
Eurycleia also reveals to Odysseus what female servants was unfaithful to Penelope while he was away thus working and sleeping with the suitors.
Eurycleia treatment with Telemachus in book one and with her encounter with Odysseus as beggar was almost identical. She was very emotional
when she saw Telemachus was leaving in search of his father and vowed to him that she would not tell his mother. The treatment with Odysseus as
beggar was similar when she found out the beggar was Odysseus she was emotional and she also made a promise to him not to tell Penelope just as
she did with Telemachus. Odysseus tells Eurycleia "I'm home, at last, after bearing twenty years of brutal hardship, home, on native ground. But now

Odysseus and Penelope Essay
Odysseus and Penelope
Odysseus and Penelope are the best two example of what it really means to be human because of their great courage to overcome all obstacles for a
greater cause. There is not one true definition on what it means to be human, but the most knowledgeable definition of "human" is to be created in the
image of God. The attributes that really set humans apart from all the other animals on earth are imagination, reason, and will. These three human
faculties make us who we are because we have the ability to counter plate our own mortality. Dr. Davis stated, "You cannot love another person without
imagination" You have to first realize what their desires are and what they want in life. The most critical aspect of... Show more content on

In book five Odysseus is presented with a very great and tempting barrier. Calypso confronts him with this statement, "But if you only knew, down
deep, what pains are fated to fill your cup before you reach that shore, you'd stay right here, preside in our house with me and be immortal." She
promised him that he would possess a trait that no other human in the odyssey has, immortality. Even though her offers are very tempting and would
be self fulfilling, he promptly rejects because all he wants is to go home and the love of his life, Penelope. This act alone shows that he was willing to
give himself and up for a greater cause. He showed great discipline and faithfulness to reject Calypso's offer and to continue on his journey home. At
the beginning of the epic, Odysseus did have one flaw that could have been detrimental to his homecoming journey and that was self–glorification. By
the end of the Odyssey, Odysseus overcame his pride and tempered it with patience because at the end of the day he didn't really know that Penelope
would be waiting on him, but he was willing to put in the effort to find out what was at the end of the road. Penelope, just as Odysseus, portrayed the
great human trait of patience. She did what it took to fend off the suitors with hope that her husband would come back for her. Penelope didn't give up
hope because she felt in heart that Odysseus would come

The Birth & Evolution Of Trinidad Carnival
Beginning in the late 1700s, the festival known as Carnival was introduced to various parts of the world as a public celebration or parade that
involved the use of masks, musical elements, costumes and more. Dating back to the 18th century, the Trinidad Carnival was introduced around the
time of the arrival of the French Catholic planters from the French West Indies. The festival originated in the early 1780s when both white and colored
people staged masquerade balls at Christmas time for entertainment. From there, it developed into playful taunting between the two groups and
eventually the tradition evolved to mark the approaching Catholic Lenten season. Unable to participate, the West African slaves of the planters held
their own masked festivals, focused around the burning and reaping of the sugar cane. For all groups, mockery and veneer played a great role in the
custom ("Birth & Evolution of Trinidad Carnival"). Following the slave emancipation in 1838, Canboulay was viewed as a symbol of independence and
defiance. Over time this converged with stickfighting, chanting, and drumming, and the rituals of Canboulay became something of a masquerade. After
great conflict with the British colonial government, who were insistent on banning drumming, masquerade, and the steel pan – the festival was
eventually adopted as "a symbol of Trinidadian culture during the independence movement" ("The Birth & Evolution of Trinidad Carnival"). A great

The Odyssey Conniving Calypso
Conniving Calypso
I had lived on my luxurious island for many years. My island is filled with life and colorful blossoms. With all the plants and beauty, the only people on
my island are young women. Everyday, my beautiful, young maids and I awaited the arrival of a man or woman lost at sea. For years we waited, no
person ever washing upon our shore. All we longed was a new friend, or man to get lost at sea and wash up on our island for us to care for and love.
When a stranger showed up on my island after swimming in the ocean, I kindly took him in. No one ever visits my wondrous island, and no one ever
leaves my island. He told me of how his men killed Helios' forbidden cattle and Zeus destroyed his ship as a punishment for this forbidden act. He told
me that he had been swimming for days, his ship destroyed and all his loyal men killed. I began to care for him as a mother cares for their child,
bathing them in a warm tub of water, feeding them warm soup made in the kitchen and putting them to sleep in a warm, comforting bed, as soft as a
pillow that swallows them when they sleep. I gave him everything he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I follow him from above watching his journey across the deep, dark and dangerous sea. I watch as Poseidon releases a storm over the wine dark sea
that he rules. He does not approve of the other god's decision to let Odysseus go home. Poseidon watches as his storm rips apart Odysseus' small raft
and I watch in horror as he is whisked into the sea. I stare in awe as a sea nymph saves the great Odysseus with a powerful veil and he washes
ashore only to be saved by another women. A beautiful, women from the palace. I see this other women, and in fury I leave because I know he no
longer will remember our great times on my island, but he will now create new memories as quick as the fastest man can run and Odysseus will soon

The books I read were the Odysseus and the Old Man and the Sea. In the Odysseus, the most memorable moment to me was that when Odysseus came
back to his house as a beggar, the most men in his house all gave him food generously except Antinoos. Unlike the other men, he didn't pityOdysseus at
all. He called Odysseus the "nuisance that bad luck has brought to our spoil our dinner" (p. 221). He told Odysseus to "leave this hall with a sound
skin after the piece of rudeness" (p. 221) and "picking up the footstool, he threw it, and hit him full on the back under the right shoulder" (p. 221). But
Odysseus wasn't afraid of him, he "stood firm as a rock" (p. 221) though it was painful. At that time, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is very alike in the book the Old Man and the Sea. When the big fish started circling, the old man "had been seeing black spots before his eyes and
the sweat salted his eyes and slated the cut over his eye and on his forehead" (p. 87), he "had felt faint and dizzy" (p. 87) every time the fish circled,
but he still held the line all the time and never let it go. And after he caught the fish successfully, the sharks were coming after them. He didn 't
easily give up all the hope of survival, instead, he "was full of resolution" (p. 101) and decided to fight back. Due to his firm willpower, he killed all
the sharks at last. During that fishing, the old man was alone all the time, only thing that supported him was his strong desire of survival. For both
Odysseus and the old man, what they believed were not exactly the same though, it helped them to get through all the difficulties and finally achieved
their wishes. How they overcome these sufferings had moved me deeply and left a profound impression for me.
And all the memorable moments above can lead to one point – the books' themes. For the Odysseus, the theme of the whole book was mainly about the
will of backing home and getting freedom. Odysseus wasn 't lucky enough to have a good fortune. But he didn 't lose his hope. When he was forced to
stay on the Calypso's Island, he didn 't submit to Calypso due to her

What Is Calypso A Motif In The Odyssey
1.In Homer's, The Odyssey, the character, Calypso, is represented by the archetype of the temptress. For example, in the given quote, "Then each one's
hands went out on each one's feast until they had had their pleasure." , demonstrates the fact that Calypso has the power to seduce Odysseus even if he
had no feelings towards her. As in every other story featuring a temptress, Calypso has power to attract the hero. Her intentions lie in entrapping
Odysseus in order to gain company. Often because of the intentions to trap, temptresses are seemingly dangerous or deviant or evil in the eyes of their
prey. Care for Odysseus is shown by Calypso by her frequent attempts to seduce him, but also when she saves him and his men from the sea monsters,

In Homer's, The Odyssey, Greek hospitality is demonstrated in the sections of the Cyclops. Expectations in Greek hospitality include, not only being
graciously welcomed into the home of another, but also feasts, entertainment, shelter at times and bearings for their journey from which they came. Not
only is this portrayed in the scenes with the Cyclops, but also in the beginning of the epic, where Telemachus warmly welcomes the suitors and
goddess Athena into the home of Odysseus and his family. Ancient Greeks treated guests equivalent to their own. As common in Ancient Greece, there
are consequences for disobeying or not following social conduct and culture. These inferred consequences are likely to include, misfortune, isolation or
a curse. The reasons being that because most of Greek culture is derived from the gods, the power is present to determine punishment and the wellness
of those who disobey forums. Because the Cyclops shows no signs of hospitality to Odysseus and his men, they have characteristics of being barbaric,

Odyssey and Calypso
Rough Draft English Paper
During Odysseus' journey in 'The Odyssey', Odysseus runs into a couple problems. He leaves home ready to fight in the Trojan War. Although he had
plans on coming home, he never made it home. His wife Penelope and his son Telemachus assumed that Odysseus was dead. It was not until Athena
came to Telemachus and gave him everything he needed to make it to his dad. What Telemachus did not know was thatOdysseus wanted to come
home, but he could not because he was being held prisoner on an island named Ogygia. Odysseus wants nothing more to return home and see his
lovely wife Penelope. Calypso fell in love with Odysseus and wants to marry him. She was possessed by her 'love' for Odysseus. Although Odysseus

Calypso being the temptress that she is kept Odysseus on her island, Ogygia, for seven years. Eventually, after Zeus talked to Athena, Zeus told
Calypso that she must set Odysseus free. Even with Zeus' orders she did not want to let Odysseus go so Odysseus had to escape her dreadful
island and return home on his own. Then after he left the island of Calypso, he ran in to Circe. Circe started to mess with all of Odysseus' men and
made it harder to get home. Both Calypso and Circe, made Odysseus' journey home so much harder than it needed to be. Since Calypso trapped
him on the island for seven years, his family and everybody at home was starting to believe he was dead. They had no hope that they would ever
see him again. So they started to push themselves on Penelope. Also if Circe would have just left him alone and did not mess with any of his men
and stayed out of the way, he could have made it home faster. Since both of the Goddess wanted him for their selves they both interfered with his
journey in many different ways. Some ways was the same like giving him the gift of immortality and persuading with other stuff. Some ways was
different like trapping him in a cage for seven years and turning his men into pigs so he could not leave as

Carnival
Trinidad Carnival
Carnival is a festival of colours which is transformed into costumes, calypso, steel band music, dance and different foods and Caribbean art which
attracts many people from the different countries. The carnival season is usually during the two weeks before the traditional Christian fasting of Lent.
This is celebrated to mark an overturning of daily life. The roots of carnival both lay in Africa and France(Liverpool:57).
Trinidad carnival is a very significant festival in the island of Trinidad and Tobago. This festival has evolved from an elegant, exclusive affair to an all
inclusive national festival of the country. Therefore in order to understand the meaning of this festival one must look at the acculturation, ... Show more

Marital law which finally ended in 1846 was traditionally enforced by the English colonies in the Caribbean from Christmas through the first or second
week of January.(Liverpool:132)These festivities along with the pomp and ceremony involved in imposing marital law (this included maneuvers by
the militia), provide the slaves with ideas for some of the earliest masquerades for carnival.
Trinidad's French Creole planter community used this opportunity to celebrate their memories of their ancestral home. Pre–emancipation carnival was
highly stratified and segregated affair, however with the planters and the free coloured keeping to themselves. Slaves were in theory debarred from
the festivities but eye witness' evidence suggests that they will have taken advantage of the temporary anarchy to indulge in the street parades (Regis
2000:231).Because of this segregation and the debarring of slaves from this celebration the slaves in turn would hold their own little carnivals in their
backyards called the Dame Lorraine masque(Regis 2000:231) by using their own rituals and folklore but also imitating their masters' behaviour at the
masked balls.
The pre–emancipation carnival saw whites costume themselves as negres de jardin (field Negro labourers) and mulatresses. This also reenacted the
Cannes Brulees (French for burning canes): the practice of rounding up slaves to put out fires in the cane fields.

Ulysses And Tennyson Comparison
In Tennyson's "Ulysses", this poem is essentially an address or monologue of Ulysses and his aging. The views throughout the poem coincide with
the episode in "The Odyssey", where Calypso offers Odysseus to live like a god and is rejected by him. In "The Odyssey", Homer portrays him as
middle–aged, while in "Ulysses", he is reflected as an old man. Tennyson reflects on Ulysses old triumphs, going back to his past and remembering
what he has been through, while preparing for his encounter with the death of aging. Ulysses views are reflected in the episode of Calypso offering
Odysseus immortality through, his knowledge that comes with old age, missing his longing for adventure, and instead of choosing immortality chooses
to live immortal through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Ulysses, Tennyson describes the views he has after his homecoming and theOdyssey ends after he has been back home, and doesn't go any further
than that. Both of these stories explain Ulysses/Odysseus in various ways but with the same mindful curiosity. They both long/longed for
adventure and to see other cultures and oversee other peoples lifestyles. In the Odyssey, it is all about the adventure in store and where he is
going and what he is going to see on his way home, but in Ulysses it is all about the trials and adventures as a whole and how he felt about it all.
Ulysses thought of returning home is unappealing to him but in the Odyssey he longs for his return and cannot wait for that day to come. Ulysses
longs for the movement, the journey to keep him moving, not stopping. Here, old age has made him look at it in a different perspective; he values
the journey more than that of in the odyssey. When Denying Calypso's invitation for living like a god with complete immortality, he contradicts
himself and chooses the metaphor. So in Ulysses, he reminisces on all of his work and how he will be remembered when he is long gone through
his great trails and achievements, be remembered through his fame, the metaphor. He mentions that his son will take over after him and continue his
fame with the family name. In Ulysses he says how that since he is getting old and nearing his death that his son who he realizes is older now will
help him after he is gone. In the Odyssey, he doesn't like just sitting back and watching his son slowly take over, which causes him to leave in the first
place. When he is nearing death, the Odyssey it is predicted that he will die peacefully and quietly in Ithaca but in Ulysseys, at the end of Tennyson's
poem he is not peaceful at all and is getting weaker

Carnival And Calypso Dance
The West Indian Dance of Calypso has a long history. Where its origins trace back to Africa it's become popularized in Trinidadian culture and
becomes the most popular around the holiday time of Christmas. Since Calypso and Carnival have such strong connections there is some background
information that you definitely need to know. Carnival and Calypso are part of the colonial and post–colonial history of Caribbean islands such as
Trinidad and Antigua. As early as the 18th century, Africans, who were at the time slaves living in Antigua, celebrated Carnival. They had used these
dances as a form of communication between each other, often times this was used to mock the slave masters without them knowing. "During this time
in the 18th century the French planters used carnival times to celebrate the period as a pre–Lenten celebration, which was basically a preparation
period for the coming of lent". (Hughes)
All through these carnivals involved street procession costumes, music, dancing, and feasting. The culture continued even after the British changed the
French as colonial rulers. all through colonial instances, slaves held separate celebrations. Their Carnival practices included stick fighting, dancing,
drumming, making a song and the staging of quick plays. role–playing turned into an integral a part of Carnival and remains the case these days.

Comparing Calypso And The Odyssey
The two compositions, "Calypso" by Suzanne Vega and The Odyssey by Homer, are two different ways of telling the story about the relationship
between Calypso and Odysseus. In each piece Calypso is very similar, yet very different. The song, "Calypso," is a about Calypso letting Odysseus
go. It seems she believes that she kept him all that time and she needs to let him leave. Calypso says, "I will stand upon the shore with a clean heart,"
when she says "with a clean heart", she refers to her decision that she is going to let Odysseus go and be free. Repeating the phrase "I let him go" at the
end of every stanza can be noticed by one in the song. The repetitiveness shows that Calypso may be regretting her decision, but also knows she must
do it.

The Double Standard: Women Cast into the Shadow's of Men
From the 12th century B.C. to today women have been pestered by the double standard. They have had to endure constant reminders that it is a man's
world and they are just living in it. While women have tried to and continue to fight the double standard through various feminist movements overtime
the problem still persists. The "war on women", as some like to call it, is nothing new and judging by how long the double standard has been around,
it seems unlikely that the bar of equality between men and women will ever be perfectly just. The Odyssey shows how the double standard was no
stranger even over 30 centuries ago. The epic poem focuses on alpha male, Odysseus' journey home. Throughout the novel Odysseus continues to be
described as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What Calypso essentially wanted was Odysseus to stay with her and for a while she was successful in holding him. While a man would have easily
been able to do this without worrying about Hermes coming in and demanding him set the woman free, Calypso had to find another way to assert
herself. In the end, her actions could not withhold the double standard.
In The Odyssey, Penelope seems to give in to the double standard; women can not succeed without men which she demonstrates. The foil Penelope
provides for Odysseus manifests itself through Odysseus' infidelity. Odysseus is held captive and instead of remaining loyal to his wife who is
intensely awaiting his return he submits to his temptations. Penelope on the other hand is dedicated to being faithful to her husband even while he
has been gone for so long. In the reader's mind Odysseus is still nothing less than the strong, dominant, alpha male. With Calypso luring him in, not
succumbing to the temptation would be bizarre given his alpha male persona. Penelope wanted to remain faithful to Odysseus even while she was
pressured to find a suitor. Because of the double standard that exists she needs to find a way to lengthen the amount of time she has. Penelope is sure
her husband will be coming home even after ten years and she does not want to commit to someone else when she is in love with and loyal to her
husband. If a man was in Penelope's position it is

Comparison Of Lone Survivor And The Odyssey
"Many cities of men he saw and learned their minds, many pains he suffered, heartsick on the open sea, fighting to save his life and bring his comrades
home." (Homer77) In Lone Survivor, and The Odyssey, men must make the difficult journey home, struggling through many obstacles and hardships.
These sources are very different, but they also hold some similarities such as obstacles, desire, and a sense of duty.
In the beginning of Lone Survivor, four men undertake a mission to take down the leader of the Taliban. They finally reach the mountain above where
the village is located, and immediately spots the Taliban leader. Mike Murphy, their lutenaint, says to move up higher into the trees. While resting,
they awake to the sound of goat bells, and take the three Taliban sheepherders as prisoners for the moment. They find a walkie talkie, and Mike, and
his men, start arguing over the right thing to do, to kill the men, tie them up and let them die on their own, or to release them and move up. They
argue as to whether or not to follow their rules of engagement, and not kill unless fired upon, or do just kill them. Finally, they decide to let them go,
and follow the rules of engagement. "If we kill these kids, it's International news. CNN doesn't care about Rules of Engagement. SEALs kill kids.
That's the story. Forever. Let them go. Shut it down." (Berg52)
Everybody has something they want. For the characters in The Odyssey, and Lone Survivor, they only want one thing; to get home to their loved ones.
The beginning of Lone Survivor starts out with Mike Murphey looking at an Arabian horse that his girlfriend really wants as a wedding gift. Odysseus
wants to be home, and away from the "terrible waters of the sea" (Homer179) In the middle of the book, Danny, one of the Seals in the mission,
falls to the ground, shot. The Taliban think he is dead, so they look in his pockets and find a sheet of paper full of colors. Without a thought, they toss
it to the ground. Little do they know, that that paper was what his wife sent him, asking what color tile they should have. "Danny looks down past his
knife. The "Tile" samples page has fallen out of his pocket. Blood stained. Danny stares at the paper." (Berg84)

Forever Alone In Homer's Odyssey By Rick Riordan
Forever Alone How would it feel to be stuck on an island, alone, forever? That is what life is like for Calypso since she sided with her father, Atlas,
against the gods in the Titan War. When the Titans lost the war, both Calypso and her father were cursed. Atlas's curse was that he must hold up the
sky, and Calypso's was that she cannot leave the island Ogygia, although others can. The gods would visit her occasionally and every thousand years
or so, the gods sent her a "companion" (usually a male hero) so that Calypso will "tend and befriend" him. She always ends up falling for the hero, but
the hero can never stay and always breaks her heart. In Homer's Odyssey, the hero Odysseus washes up on the beach of Ogygia. He had been drifting ...

enough away that she could not see him but close enough so that she could still bring him food. Since Leo is a son of Hephaestus, he starts to
build himself a boat to get off the island with Calypso occasionally interrupting to complain about how loud he is being in his makeshift forge and
how he is scaring off the birds. She later brings him a set of fireproof clothes, so he would not burn through them. Leo tells her that she is warming

energy draining quickly.
As I reached Calypso, I crumbled to the ground. I hadn't noticed at first, but Morpheus was standing next to Kronos, struggling to keep me unconscious
as I fought against his spell.
"Percy!" Calypso shrieked as Kronos flashed out with her.
I will find you even if it's the last thing I do, I promised as the darkness engulfed me.
I woke up a few hours later, my head throbbing. I knew what I had to do.
Go home.
I stepped onto the water, running across it with speed I never thought imaginable.

"Hey yourself," Thalia replied. "Ready for today?"

The Nature of Women Portrayed by Circe and Calypso in The Odyssey
In Homer's composition, The Odyssey, the roles women play are very significant. The best examples of the true nature of women occur when Odysseus
encounters Circe and Calypso. These two characters illustrate the thoughts and feelings of how women how a woman feels and how they think. As the

CALYPSO MUSIC
Calypso is one of the most significant traditions in the Caribbean Music Industry. 'Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana, daylight come and me
wan' go home," are the words to a famous calypso song recorded by Harry Belafonte in 1956. The Free Dictionary defines calypso music as 'a type of
music that originated in the West Indies, notably in Trinidad, and is characterized by improvised lyrics on topical or broadly humorous subjects'. It
can also be said that calypso is a certain style of music which incorporates rhythms that are typical of African music. This type of music is seen played

How Is Calypso In The Odyssey
Homer characterizes Calypso as a beautiful goddess who loves and deeply cares about Odysseus through her actions and her dialogue with the man of
twists and turns, Odysseus. In the novel, The Odyssey, Odysseus is stranded on an island with an exquisite nymph named Calypso. There, Calypso
falls in love with Odysseus, but sadly for her, the feeling is not mutual.
One way that Homer displays Calypso's immense love for Odysseus is by having Calypso ask Odysseus to stay with her forever and accept
immortality. Evidence for this claim occurs in book five where the angry Calypso shouts to the Gods, "and I welcomed him warmly, cherished him,
even vowed to make the man immortal, ageless, all his days..."(Homer pg.156). The dialogue is hollering that

Calypso Song Analysis
The 1940's was a time of conflict, despair, and hope to everyone who was involved in war of the giants. World War II, as the name states was a
conflict on a global scale, with a plethora of nations involved. In addition, many of those nations created pacts of alliances with each other that
only complicated the fighting. One of the nations that was involved was the country of Trinidad and Tobago, as a key collaborator with Allies
against the Axis of Powers, it provided the area for two US bases (The Roaring Lion). Furthermore, it provided support during the conflict of the
Atlantic. During this time the Trinidad and Tobago culture became a receiver of many different inputs, in the matters of all aspects. These new
inputs of influences forged the music culture of calypso, the voice of the people in the form of song. Through calypso melodies, the people of
Trinidad and Tobago started to tell their views of the world events, and during this time the major event was WWII. By analyzing the lyrics of the
Trinidad song that was made in 1943, it can be determined what the current events were at the time and the political opinions of the native people,
which was the changing view on the soviet forces of in the war.
The lyrics of this calypso song talk about the successful war campaigning of Russia, and as the result of its movement how the view on the country has

Culture of Trinidad Essay
Culture of Trinidad
According to the encyclopedia, culture is defined as "The totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other
products of human work and thought [www.wikipedia.com]." In Trinidad these particular aspects are very distinct to the people's daily lives on the
island. The diversity of actual cultures and ethnicities on the island has melted together over the centuries to create a Trinidadian culture of its own.

Calypso Borealis 'And I Wondered Lonely As A Cloud'
Where can happiness be found in the world? John Muir answers this question in his essay "The Calypso Borealis," and William Wordsworth answers
this in his poem "I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud." They both describe the positive relationship that they have with nature, and how happy nature makes
them. But the literary devices they use to express their relationships with nature are slightly different. Both John Muir in "The Calypso Borealis" and
William Wordsworthin "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" use positive connotations of words and personification to express their relationships with
nature, but Muir also uses specific imagery to show how he appreciates nature, whereas Wordsworth uses unique syntax to help show how joyful nature
makes him.

In his essay, Muir describes the Calypso Borealis flower he found one day while exploring. He uses mostly positive connotations and imagery to
describe the flower: "I found beautiful Calypso on the mossy bank of a stream... its small white bulb had found a soft nest... and made the impression
of the utmost simple purity like a snowflower." This description of Calypso flower creates a clear picture for the reader of what the Calypso flower
looks like, while still creating a joyful tone. Muir does this by using words and phrases with positive connotations, such as "beautiful," "soft nest," and
"purity." These descriptions show how Muir views nature with optimism and joy, and finds beauty in nature. Muir goes on to describe how his meeting
with Calypso made a larger impression on him than any meeting with another human, even though he met Calypso forty–five years before writing the
essay. Muir uses personification in his description to show how he "met" the Calypso flower. He also repeatedly refers to the flower as "Calypso"
throughout the essay, as if the flower is a person named Calypso, which shows how this flower meant as much to him or more than any person.
Moreover, Muir is a naturalist writer, and he studied how all living things are connected. When he is

Calypso: The Love Of Odysseus And Homer's Love
Calypso was a goddess nymph in Ogygia. She was the daughter of Atlas, who held Odysseus for 7 years in her island. It is their only similarity with
Penelope is that they love that man more than anything else. 'You are cruel, you gods, and quickest to envy, since you are jealous if any goddess
openly mates with a man, taking a mortal to her bed." (Book 5, Lines 103–105) In this, Calypso had no intentions of letting away Odysseus to go back
to Ithaca for she was in love with him. She argued that why do gods can love mortal women but why goddesses can't do the same. "Be sad no longer,
unhappy man, don't waste your life in pining: I am ready and willing to send you on your way" Calypso said (Book 5, Lines 150–151).But she had no

Calypso By the time one turns to Part II of Ulysses, it is clear that there are no coincidences when it comes to Joyce's writings. Every word was

Buck Mulligan, a medical student who is Stephen's tower–mate despite not paying any rent, simply wants to exploit Stephen's talents as an artist for
petty, self–serving, monetary gain. Mulligan has no appreciation for the actual artistry Stephen possesses, just the selfish economic value it may have
for him. Echoing this sentiment, when the milkwoman arrives in 'Telemachus', she is more concerned with Mulligan, the medical student, than
Stephen, the artist. Stephen, who sees the milkwoman as representing the greater ideals of Ireland, his home, is disillusioned by this reality. So, we see
that Stephen is neither accepted by the people that surround him nor the society he is surrounded by. Thus, the key, or rather the lack of the key, is a
symbol that embodies Stephen's distressing reality of not being able to feel at home, even though he is home. Yet, when you cannot open the door, you

Symbolic Deaths Of Odysseus
The Symbolic Deaths of Odysseus in The Odyssey
What burden or identity does Odysseus shed in each of them? How does each "death" empower him to finally return and claim both home and his
kingdom?
Something in the universe changes every second. Whether it be the smallest chemical reaction, or the death of a great star. The only thing that we have
control of is how we react to the change. You could adapt to the situation, or stay the same and refuse to change. However, by choosing one of these
options, you are setting the path you are taking. One of these paths could lead to success and progress, while the other could stop you in your tracks.
These two paths are what Odysseus has to choose from at every turn in his journey. Most of the time he chooses to adapt, but when he does, he takes it
to an extreme. These extremes cause him to completely change his mind set, and get much further in his journey. This kind of change could be seen as
a "symbolic death". Meaning, after going through a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay about The Odyssey
The life of a God, forever bliss, complete happiness: Odysseus slights all of these things in order for him to return to his loving wife and son. The
concept of true commitment was a very commendable quality for a Greek hero to possess. With this character trait, Odysseus models the ideal
husband, father, and leader. Unfortunately, in today's society, one rarely encounters such outstanding morality. Being raised in an explicit society, a
decrease in certain morals has become fashionable. In particular, the college experience has become accepted as the "wild times" of one's life. Certain
activities ordinarily shunned are now perceived as a learning experience when involving a college student. Drugs and alcohol abuse are commonplace

But let him have no company, gods or men,
Only a raft that he must lash together,
And after twenty days, worn out at sea,
He shall make land upon the garden aisle. (263)
This edict of Zeus summarizes the journey Odysseus makes in order to return home. He endures dire hardships to make the journey home, yet he still
chooses to continue forward. Although Odysseus accepts this hardship as a mere speed bump, many people today would not prevail through such
adversity. A knack for finding the easy way out has seemed to blossom as the one uniform skill possessed by most young people today. With today's
technology, a person rarely spends an afternoon by himself, and if so, would not like it. With this in mind, choosing to continue on with the journey in
present times would be much harder of a decision to make than in ancient times.
Another problem around school campuses is the growing rate of alcohol and drug abuse amongst students. Extreme marijuana usage has taken claim to
many victims. The drug may not kill the person using it, but it does kill motivation. The drug becomes a part of the user's life, and the user will
eventually become lethargic. This lethargy continues to increase until most productive activities are eliminated. Although Odysseus's crew did not have
marijuana on their ship, his crew did encounter a drug that posed a similar threat. Odysseus explains the drug, "but those who ate this honeyed plant,

It was traced back to West African Kaiso and the arrival of the French planters and their slaves in the 1800s. People think that these songs were
introduced during the French settlement of the island of Trinidad. An African slave named Gros Jean is thought to be the first Calypsonian, or
someone who makes Calypso music. Over the last century Calypso music has been becoming well known by not only the Carribean, but around the

Calypso: The Most Powerful Women In Homer's Odyssey
Within a majority of ancient society, women were not seen as significant or powerful members. Despite this, Homer's The Odyssey explores a large

Smoke rises as the nymph, Calypso, tends to the fire that burns on her hearthstone inside the cave that she made home on the island, Ogygia. Calypso

Race has played a crucial role in the creation of the diverse plethora of musical genres that London is famous for. The cultural diversity of London's
music arguably dates back to Calypso, which accompanied those migrating from the Caribbean, and has more recently formed the foundation of the
"Black Atlantic". This has led to modern styles including Afrobeats, Bashment and Grime. Yet, with this popularity and growth has come great
controversy; from the government banning Calypso to the police and the form 696 in contemporary society. Though this adverse attitude may appear
to be a more recent reaction, I will use this paper to argue that the early works of Plato in 'The Republic', laid the foundation that these current

not specifically African, American, Caribbean, or British, but all of these at once", as a perfect encapsulation of the music that we listen to in this
modern society. Although Plato ordered that "music and gymnastic should be preserved and no innovation made", I would argue that the innovation
that we've made to music has changed the way that we listen for the better. In fact, music has allowed for this blending of cultures, encouraging more
open–mindedness with regards to race in modern day London. On the contrary, I would also argue that these styles of music that are typically
regarded as "black styles", are creating a negative stereotype, perpetuating the archetype associated with black people in London. Take the case of

like: Atilla the Hun, Lord Invader and the Roaring Lion all made an indelible impression on the Calypso world. Later Lord Kitchen and Sparrow
continued to make hits that were played throughout the world paving the way for Queen Victoria and Jerome Rodrigez both of whom had stellar

Why Did Calypso Let Odysseus Leave
Calypso was the woman who saved Odysseus she kept him in her island for seven years she made him his lover, but he never felt the same way
about her he always would think about the day that he would go home to his wife and son. The only reason that Calypso let Odysseus leave was
because Zeus he sent the messenger of the gods to tell her to let Odysseus go home to his people and wife. Calypso was fearful of zeus power at the
same time she was angry that she has to let go of Odysseus since she was the one who saved his life Calypso said to Hermes that Gods are jealous of
her happiness, but she still helped Odysseus to build a boat and gave him food for his journey. Before Calypso let Odysseus leave she asked him if
he really wants to leave she was willing to give anything he want, but odysseus still chose to go back him home and wife. ... Show more content on

Calypso And Odyssey Compare And Contrast
PART 4–CALYPSO( Ulysses–James Joyce) VERSUS CALYPSO(Odyssey–Homer)
Name: ALEXANDRU CORINA
II, R–E , 4073
Chapter 4 – Calypso ( pg.45–pg.57)
This chapter i am referring to is called Calypso because it has a certain correlation with the chapter that has the same name from the Odyssey written by
Homer. In this paper i have tried to point out the main similarities and differences between the two chapters named Calypso. As Blamires says: "In
Homer, the goddess Calypso holds Odysseus in amorous captivity for seven years until she is ordered by the gods to release him. Here Leopold
Bloom takes his morning departure from his wife to whom he ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

–Metempsychosis , he said, is what the ancient Greeks called it. They used to believe you could be changed into an animal or a tree, for instance."
But this word "metempsychosis" that Joyce uses can also refer to both Bloom and Molly as the reincarnation of Odysseus(Bloom) and
Calypso(Molly) and a reversed relationship between husband and wife. Leopold asuumes the role of the wife and at the same time the role of a
captive man, while Molly assumes the role of the husband who stays in bed and asks for breakfast and the role of a captor

Significance Of Trinidad And Tobago Carnival
Question: Examine the economic, social and cultural significance of the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival (20th century to present) Trinidad and Tobago's
carnival is an annual celebration that is held on the Monday and Tuesday before the Lent season of fasting , which is celebrated by the Roman Catholic
religion. The carnival festival of Trinidad and Tobagobegun in the late 18th century, when the French plantation owners , held organised masquerades
balls, before the fasting of Lent. The Africian slaves and coloureds were not allowed to participate in these celebrations. In turn they formed their
own celebration in which they called "Canboulary". During the celebrations of the Masquerades Balls, the Africian slaves and coloured had some
opportunity to be engaged and enjoy themselves. When these slaves were emancipated in the year 1838, the door was fully opened for the Africians
to participate in their own carnival celebrations. They then took over carnival and embraced it as an expression of their freedom. They celebrated this
festival with calypso music, soca music, costumes, stick–fighting and limbo. The elements of carnival were developed from the Africian slaves.
Calypso music was created in Trinidad during the 17th century by these slaves that were imported to the Caribbean island to work on sugar ... Show

Calypso Research Paper - The Baddest of Them All

  • 1. Calypso Research Paper The Baddest of Them All People always talk about how heroes are so great. But the real reason the hero does or completes his legendary acts are because of the villain. The villain is what causes the problem, and makes up the entire story. So even though there have been many unique, grueling villains throughout time, to memorable ones are the White Witch, the villain from the book The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Calypso, a beautiful but evil woman from The Odyssey. But when these two vile women are compared, the White Witch has the coldest heart of the two for many reasons. It is true that Calypso is obviously a villain because she is greedy, selfish, and holds people captive, but she is an empty cupboard when it comes to one very... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The White Witch tries to take over Narnia and casts an eternal winter over the magical land.To start off, The White Witch is a greater villain than Calypso because she is greedy. According to the text, "Then you will know that the boy belongs to me. (turns to crowd) That boy (points to Edmund) will die on the Stone Table"(The Chronicles of Narnia Episode I, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe). This shows that the White Witch is a greater villain than Calypso because while Calypso did show she was greedy when not wanting to give up Odysseus, The White Witch was greedy in taking an innocent boy, and killing him.Equally fascinating, The White Witch is an obviously greater villain than Calypso because she is selfish. Stated in the text,"I'm kidnapping you. It's the White Witch, the one that makes it always winter, and never Christmas" (The Chronicles of Narnia Episode I, The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe). This shows that the White Witch is a greater villain than Calypso because while she is making everyone miserable in not celebrating Christmas, Calypso is only not understanding men. Unquestionably important,The White Witch is an above class, more outstanding villain than Calypso because she holds people captive. In the text, "The Former ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Because of the number of suitors involved if he makes a hasty decision to fight the suitors along he would be outnumbered. Therefore his disguise will give him the upper hand by devising a plan with those individuals who are loyal and he can trust. They will be able to join forces and initiate a surprise raid on the suitors and ultimately remove them out of his palace. 4.Men and some women are closely connected with weapons or the absence of weapons. She nursed Odysseus and Telemachus when they were babies. She also served as the master's confidante. She is very loyal to both Telemachus and Odysseus. Upon Telemachus search to find his father she keeps his journey a secret from his mother Penelope (Homer 2.104–105). She also keeps Odysseus identity a secret after recognizing a scar on his leg. In book 19 she states "that scar as the old nurse cradle his leg and her hand passed down she felt it. She was very emotional when she saw Telemachus was leaving in search of his father and vowed to him that she would not tell his mother. The treatment with Odysseus as beggar was similar when she found out the beggar was Odysseus she was emotional and she also made a promise to him not to tell Penelope just as she did with Telemachus. • 3. Odysseus and Penelope Essay Odysseus and Penelope Odysseus and Penelope are the best two example of what it really means to be human because of their great courage to overcome all obstacles for a greater cause. There is not one true definition on what it means to be human, but the most knowledgeable definition of "human" is to be created in the image of God. The attributes that really set humans apart from all the other animals on earth are imagination, reason, and will. These three human faculties make us who we are because we have the ability to counter plate our own mortality. Dr. Davis stated, "You cannot love another person without imagination" You have to first realize what their desires are and what they want in life. The most critical aspect of... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In book five Odysseus is presented with a very great and tempting barrier. Calypso confronts him with this statement, "But if you only knew, down deep, what pains are fated to fill your cup before you reach that shore, you'd stay right here, preside in our house with me and be immortal." She promised him that he would possess a trait that no other human in the odyssey has, immortality. Even though her offers are very tempting and would be self fulfilling, he promptly rejects because all he wants is to go home and the love of his life, Penelope. This act alone shows that he was willing to give himself and up for a greater cause. He showed great discipline and faithfulness to reject Calypso's offer and to continue on his journey home. At the beginning of the epic, Odysseus did have one flaw that could have been detrimental to his homecoming journey and that was self–glorification. By the end of the Odyssey, Odysseus overcame his pride and tempered it with patience because at the end of the day he didn't really know that Penelope would be waiting on him, but he was willing to put in the effort to find out what was at the end of the road. Penelope, just as Odysseus, portrayed the great human trait of patience. She did what it took to fend off the suitors with hope that her husband would come back for her. Penelope didn't give up hope because she felt in heart that Odysseus would come ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Birth & Evolution Of Trinidad Carnival Beginning in the late 1700s, the festival known as Carnival was introduced to various parts of the world as a public celebration or parade that involved the use of masks, musical elements, costumes and more. Dating back to the 18th century, the Trinidad Carnival was introduced around the time of the arrival of the French Catholic planters from the French West Indies. The festival originated in the early 1780s when both white and colored people staged masquerade balls at Christmas time for entertainment. From there, it developed into playful taunting between the two groups and eventually the tradition evolved to mark the approaching Catholic Lenten season. Unable to participate, the West African slaves of the planters held their own masked festivals, focused around the burning and reaping of the sugar cane. For all groups, mockery and veneer played a great role in the custom ("Birth & Evolution of Trinidad Carnival"). Following the slave emancipation in 1838, Canboulay was viewed as a symbol of independence and defiance. Over time this converged with stickfighting, chanting, and drumming, and the rituals of Canboulay became something of a masquerade. After great conflict with the British colonial government, who were insistent on banning drumming, masquerade, and the steel pan – the festival was eventually adopted as "a symbol of Trinidadian culture during the independence movement" ("The Birth & Evolution of Trinidad Carnival"). With all the plants and beauty, the only people on my island are young women. Everyday, my beautiful, young maids and I awaited the arrival of a man or woman lost at sea. For years we waited, no person ever washing upon our shore. All we longed was a new friend, or man to get lost at sea and wash up on our island for us to care for and love. When a stranger showed up on my island after swimming in the ocean, I kindly took him in. No one ever visits my wondrous island, and no one ever leaves my island. He told me of how his men killed Helios' forbidden cattle and Zeus destroyed his ship as a punishment for this forbidden act. He told me that he had been swimming for days, his ship destroyed and all his loyal men killed. In the Odysseus, the most memorable moment to me was that when Odysseus came back to his house as a beggar, the most men in his house all gave him food generously except Antinoos. Trinidad's French Creole planter community used this opportunity to celebrate their memories of their ancestral home. Pre–emancipation carnival was highly stratified and segregated affair, however with the planters and the free coloured keeping to themselves. Slaves were in theory debarred from the festivities but eye witness' evidence suggests that they will have taken advantage of the temporary anarchy to indulge in the street parades (Regis 2000:231).Because of this segregation and the debarring of slaves from this celebration the slaves in turn would hold their own little carnivals in their backyards called the Dame Lorraine masque(Regis 2000:231) by using their own rituals and folklore but also imitating their masters' behaviour at the masked balls. • 10. Ulysses And Tennyson Comparison In Tennyson's "Ulysses", this poem is essentially an address or monologue of Ulysses and his aging. The views throughout the poem coincide with the episode in "The Odyssey", where Calypso offers Odysseus to live like a god and is rejected by him. In "The Odyssey", Homer portrays him as middle–aged, while in "Ulysses", he is reflected as an old man. Tennyson reflects on Ulysses old triumphs, going back to his past and remembering what he has been through, while preparing for his encounter with the death of aging. Both of these stories explain Ulysses/Odysseus in various ways but with the same mindful curiosity. They both long/longed for adventure and to see other cultures and oversee other peoples lifestyles. In the Odyssey, it is all about the adventure in store and where he is going and what he is going to see on his way home, but in Ulysses it is all about the trials and adventures as a whole and how he felt about it all. Ulysses thought of returning home is unappealing to him but in the Odyssey he longs for his return and cannot wait for that day to come. Ulysses longs for the movement, the journey to keep him moving, not stopping. Here, old age has made him look at it in a different perspective; he values the journey more than that of in the odyssey. When Denying Calypso's invitation for living like a god with complete immortality, he contradicts himself and chooses the metaphor. So in Ulysses, he reminisces on all of his work and how he will be remembered when he is long gone through his great trails and achievements, be remembered through his fame, the metaphor. He mentions that his son will take over after him and continue his fame with the family name. In Ulysses he says how that since he is getting old and nearing his death that his son who he realizes is older now will help him after he is gone. In the Odyssey, he doesn't like just sitting back and watching his son slowly take over, which causes him to leave in the first place. Where its origins trace back to Africa it's become popularized in Trinidadian culture and becomes the most popular around the holiday time of Christmas. Since Calypso and Carnival have such strong connections there is some background information that you definitely need to know. (Homer77) In Lone Survivor, and The Odyssey, men must make the difficult journey home, struggling through many obstacles and hardships. These sources are very different, but they also hold some similarities such as obstacles, desire, and a sense of duty. In the beginning of Lone Survivor, four men undertake a mission to take down the leader of the Taliban. They finally reach the mountain above where the village is located, and immediately spots the Taliban leader. Mike Murphy, their lutenaint, says to move up higher into the trees. While resting, they awake to the sound of goat bells, and take the three Taliban sheepherders as prisoners for the moment. They find a walkie talkie, and Mike, and his men, start arguing over the right thing to do, to kill the men, tie them up and let them die on their own, or to release them and move up. They argue as to whether or not to follow their rules of engagement, and not kill unless fired upon, or do just kill them. Finally, they decide to let them go, and follow the rules of engagement. "If we kill these kids, it's International news. CNN doesn't care about Rules of Engagement. SEALs kill kids. That's the story. Forever. Let them go. Shut it down." (Berg52) Everybody has something they want. For the characters in The Odyssey, and Lone Survivor, they only want one thing; to get home to their loved ones. The beginning of Lone Survivor starts out with Mike Murphey looking at an Arabian horse that his girlfriend really wants as a wedding gift. • 26. Calypso Borealis 'And I Wondered Lonely As A Cloud' Where can happiness be found in the world? John Muir answers this question in his essay "The Calypso Borealis," and William Wordsworth answers this in his poem "I Wondered Lonely as a Cloud." They both describe the positive relationship that they have with nature, and how happy nature makes them. But the literary devices they use to express their relationships with nature are slightly different. Both John Muir in "The Calypso Borealis" and William Wordsworthin "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" use positive connotations of words and personification to express their relationships with nature, but Muir also uses specific imagery to show how he appreciates nature, whereas Wordsworth uses unique syntax to help show how joyful nature makes him. To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his essay, Muir describes the Calypso Borealis flower he found one day while exploring. He uses mostly positive connotations and imagery to describe the flower: "I found beautiful Calypso on the mossy bank of a stream... its small white bulb had found a soft nest... and made the impression of the utmost simple purity like a snowflower." This description of Calypso flower creates a clear picture for the reader of what the Calypso flower looks like, while still creating a joyful tone. Muir does this by using words and phrases with positive connotations, such as "beautiful," "soft nest," and "purity." These descriptions show how Muir views nature with optimism and joy, and finds beauty in nature. Muir goes on to describe how his meeting with Calypso made a larger impression on him than any meeting with another human, even though he met Calypso forty–five years before writing the essay. Muir uses personification in his description to show how he "met" the Calypso flower. He also repeatedly refers to the flower as "Calypso" throughout the essay, as if the flower is a person named Calypso, which shows how this flower meant as much to him or more than any person. Moreover, Muir is a naturalist writer, and he studied how all living things are connected. When he is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Calypso: The Love Of Odysseus And Homer's Love Calypso was a goddess nymph in Ogygia. She was the daughter of Atlas, who held Odysseus for 7 years in her island. It is their only similarity with Penelope is that they love that man more than anything else. 'You are cruel, you gods, and quickest to envy, since you are jealous if any goddess openly mates with a man, taking a mortal to her bed." (Book 5, Lines 103–105) In this, Calypso had no intentions of letting away Odysseus to go back to Ithaca for she was in love with him. She argued that why do gods can love mortal women but why goddesses can't do the same. "Be sad no longer, unhappy man, don't waste your life in pining: I am ready and willing to send you on your way" Calypso said (Book 5, Lines 150–151).But she had no choice as Zeus is the gods of all gods and goddesses as she had to let him go. • 28. Calypso Part 2 Essay Calypso By the time one turns to Part II of Ulysses, it is clear that there are no coincidences when it comes to Joyce's writings. Every word was placed after agonized deliberation and if a theme appears to be reoccurring, it is because Joyce assigned deeper meaning than a cursory read of the word may suggest. Both in the beginning chapter of 'The Telemachiad' and the initial chapter of Part II, 'Calypso', Joyce leaves the protagonists keyless – Stephen Dedalus hands the key to his tower to Buck Mulligan and Leopold Bloom chose to leave home without his key as to not disturb his wife. In a book containing so many complicated and hidden notions, this motif is easily identifiable. Yet, it is only when you explore the greater significance of two keyless heroes that this symbolization can be fully appreciated.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Buck Mulligan, a medical student who is Stephen's tower–mate despite not paying any rent, simply wants to exploit Stephen's talents as an artist for petty, self–serving, monetary gain. Mulligan has no appreciation for the actual artistry Stephen possesses, just the selfish economic value it may have for him. Echoing this sentiment, when the milkwoman arrives in 'Telemachus', she is more concerned with Mulligan, the medical student, than Stephen, the artist. Stephen, who sees the milkwoman as representing the greater ideals of Ireland, his home, is disillusioned by this reality. So, we see that Stephen is neither accepted by the people that surround him nor the society he is surrounded by. Thus, the key, or rather the lack of the key, is a symbol that embodies Stephen's distressing reality of not being able to feel at home, even though he is home. How does each "death" empower him to finally return and claim both home and his kingdom? Something in the universe changes every second. Whether it be the smallest chemical reaction, or the death of a great star. The only thing that we have control of is how we react to the change. You could adapt to the situation, or stay the same and refuse to change. However, by choosing one of these options, you are setting the path you are taking. One of these paths could lead to success and progress, while the other could stop you in your tracks. These two paths are what Odysseus has to choose from at every turn in his journey. Most of the time he chooses to adapt, but when he does, he takes it to an extreme. These extremes cause him to completely change his mind set, and get much further in his journey. The concept of true commitment was a very commendable quality for a Greek hero to possess. With this character trait, Odysseus models the ideal husband, father, and leader. Unfortunately, in today's society, one rarely encounters such outstanding morality. Being raised in an explicit society, a decrease in certain morals has become fashionable. In particular, the college experience has become accepted as the "wild times" of one's life. Although Odysseus accepts this hardship as a mere speed bump, many people today would not prevail through such adversity. A knack for finding the easy way out has seemed to blossom as the one uniform skill possessed by most young people today. With today's technology, a person rarely spends an afternoon by himself, and if so, would not like it. With this in mind, choosing to continue on with the journey in present times would be much harder of a decision to make than in ancient times. Another problem around school campuses is the growing rate of alcohol and drug abuse amongst students. Extreme marijuana usage has taken claim to many victims. The drug may not kill the person using it, but it does kill motivation. The drug becomes a part of the user's life, and the user will eventually become lethargic. This lethargy continues to increase until most productive activities are eliminated. Although Odysseus's crew did not have marijuana on their ship, his crew did encounter a drug that posed a similar threat. Despite this, Homer's The Odyssey explores a large variety of females who hold a sort of dominance, whether it is social, supernatural, or another form. Calypso, the beautiful nymph, is a suitable representation of a powerful woman as she is able to utilize her allure to influence the actions of others. Circe, the nymph with lovely braids, can not only do the same as Calypso, but she has also been gifted with godly abilities that help her manipulate the men that seek her. Although, in spite of being the most mortal, the wise Penelope appears to be the most powerful, using her immense charm and strong will to fend off numerous suitors and maintain her place in her palace until her husband's return. Nonetheless, many aspects come into play when determining the most powerful woman. In contrast to battles with men, Cyclops, or animals, sexual battles with women are sometimes much more difficult to win. These two female characters are especially enticing to Odysseus because they are goddesses. Though it is evident that Odysseus longs to return to Penelope in Ithaka, it sometimes appears that he has lost vision of what life was like with a wife, a son, and with thousands of people who regard him as King. So though at a glance it appears that Odysseus is merely succumbing to Circe's schemes for reasons related to their health and well–being, if we read between the lines, we soon begin to realize that Odysseus is weak in the voracious hands of lust. Odysseus arrives on Calypso's island alone, after the loss of his men and ship. Calypso rescues him and loves and cares for him in her cave. Although Plato ordered that "music and gymnastic should be preserved and no innovation made", I would argue that the innovation that we've made to music has changed the way that we listen for the better. In fact, music has allowed for this blending of cultures, encouraging more open–mindedness with regards to race in modern day London. On the contrary, I would also argue that these styles of music that are typically regarded as "black styles", are creating a negative stereotype, perpetuating the archetype associated with black people in London. The carnival festival of Trinidad and Tobagobegun in the late 18th century, when the French plantation owners , held organised masquerades balls, before the fasting of Lent.
