An Industry Study on the Intensive Pig Farming Industry
Executive Summary
Intensive pig farming is an agricultural industry that operates by raising live pigs for slaughtering
which will then be turned into pork for human consumption. Piggeries, as the firm is called, serve as
a major food source in the Philippines, with the highest grossing per capita consumption among red
meats. The industry is fairly attractive to investors as its high capital requirement and risky nature is
effectively balanced out by the steady demand of a readily available market.
The competitive structure of the industry consists of two groups. The first being commercial firms,
examples of the biggest are Robina, Monterey and Foremost farms. These firms partake in large
scale production of pigs; with herds usually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thus, intensive piggeries are widely used by commercial companies that engage in the sale of pigs.
In a highly urbanized world, the method of family farming is increasingly proving obsolete. Family
or backyard farming is continually being pushed into the periphery, as the waste and smell, among
other economic externalities find little tolerance among the urban population. In the United States,
and other highly industrialized countries, backyard farming can no longer keep up with the
competitive prices and efficient processes available to firms. Here in the Philippines, the situation is
quite different: Family farming remains relevant spanning over 75 percent of the total swine stock
although not necessarily threatening the top commercial firms due to the disparity in targeted market
segments. Commercial firms into intensive pig farming show greater dominance in Metro Manila
and specific urban areas. Demand is also concentrated in the peripheral regions of the Metro,
specifically Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog. In comparison, backyard farms cater extensively
to the rural wet markets.
The industry is in its growth stage with Monterey, Robina Farms, and Foremost as its key players.
With regards to the market, firms concerned with intensive pig–farming hold less than a fourth of
the market share. Firms, therefore have room for expansion of operations. With regards to their
product, although limited by its nature, there is still room

History And Origins Of Swine
History/Background The history of swine or pigs is very long. It can be traced to fossils dating back
40 million years, or to the Biblical creation. Depending on who is telling the story, the history is
bound to differ. Since pigs were first domesticated and production spread throughout the world, a
great deal has changed in the industry. People have gone from raising a few pigs in their yard for the
family to survive the winter to huge commercial farms which are specialized in farrowing or
finishing. The Swine industry has grown immensely and become quite concentrated, whether this is
a good or bad thing is once again up to the bias of the narrator. Pigs date back 40 million years to
fossils according to Pork checkoff, however as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There were a number of pigs that escaped as Hernando's herd grew upwards to 700 head, those that
escaped became wild pigs, which are very likely the ancestors of today's feral or razorback pigs. Pig
production spread quickly through the colonies. They were introduced to New Mexico in 1600 by
Hernando Cortes, and Jamestown in Virgina in 1607 by Sir Walter Raleigh. By the close of the 17th
century, the average farmer had four or five pigs which he raised to supply salt pork and bacon for
his own family. It wasn't until after the Revolutionary War that pioneers header west, taking their
pigs with them and growing the American herd. Packing plants began to spring up in major cities.
(Pork Checkoff, 2009–2011).
Changes in the Structure of the U.S. Pork Industry The United States has made a significant shift in
swine production during the past two decades. The countryside used to be filled with small
operations that raised hogs and crops. However, the industry has become much more concentrated
among large operations. Single phase operations are much more prominent and replaced most of the
farrow–to–finish operations. Between 1992 and 2004 the number of hog farms fell by more than
70%, yet the hog inventory remained stable as the average operation grew from 945 head in 1992 to
4,646 in 2004 (Key & McBride, 2007). Small family farmer operations could not compete with the
commercial farms. "In less than

Chipotle Ethical Dilemmas
When you are feeling down in the dumps, you have two options. Option A: go to the doctor to get an
antibiotic to help you feel better, or Option B: just stick it out, feel terrible for an extended amount
of time, and infect some other people with the same sickness along the way. Since the late 1800's,
most people have been choosing option A. In today's society, most people don't think twice about
having an antibiotic prescribed to them. Unfortunately, though, many activists challenge this theory
and falsely accuse agriculturalists for infecting the food chain with antibiotics and hormones.
The word "antibiotic" in the livestock industry endures an extremely toasty topic. This word appears
on Facebook posts, Twitter feeds, and in television news. Antibiotics receive an unfair assessment,
when in reality, the word is just one large miscommunication between agriculturists like myself, and
the public consumers. October 20th, 2015 was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This consumer lives in a large city, has no agriculture background, and believes all that they see on
different types of media. As this consumer, I would agree with the Chipotle. Chipotle makes an
impressive case against antibiotic use in livestock. I would begin to believe that what they say is
true. However, when I again don my muck boots, I know that antibiotics are not used to increase
production or combat effects of overcrowding. Antibiotics are used only to help an animal just like
humans get over a sickness when necessary. Chipotle also claims they serve pork from pigs allowed
to freely root and roam outdoors or in deeply bedded barns (Chipotle np). Activists claim they want
animals to be raised this way, however, this strategy does not eliminate sickness. Contrary to
Chipotle's statements, statistically, no data is present to assist their claims. Removing antibiotics
from farms and ranches is simply dangerous to our ability to continue raising healthy

Food Inc. Summary Essay
Food Inc. opens in an American supermarket and draws attention to the unnatural nature of year–
round tomatoes and boneless meat. It pulls aside the curtain that is concealing the truth about food
from the consumer. After the brief intro, the movie shifts its focus to the topic of fast food and its
impact on the meat industries. Fast food virtually started with McDonald's. When they decided to
simplify their menu and hire employees that repeated one task over and over for minimum wage, the
result was the fast food phenomenon that swept the United States, and then the world. Today,
McDonald's is the largest purchaser of beef and potatoes in the United States, and is one of the
largest purchasers of pork, chicken, tomatoes, and apples. Though ... Show more content on

Corn is the number one grain used to feed animals for slaughter. Feeding cows corn instead of their
natural diet lead to the unintentional creation of 157H7 E. coli, a deadly bacteria that can kill. The
film reveals how food standards have dropped, with only 9,164 safety inspections from the FDA
each year as compared to over 50,000 in 1972. The food industry has become consolidated to the
point of a few companies having a great deal of power and influence via the government. The
USDA is no longer able to shutdown plants with contaminated meat. A bill titled "Kevin's Law" had
the intent of changing that, but, after 6 years, the bill still has not been passed. Food companies have
made some attempts to reduce E. coli by cleaning their meats in an ammonia solution. However,
unhealthy food is being subsidized and contributing to American obesity and the rise of type 2
diabetes in adolescents. The film then travels to a hog processing plant that kills 32,000 hogs a day.

Introduction
This paper will explore the pork impact on economy and consumption.
Pork Production
Many meats that are eaten today comes from domestic animal including pork, which is derived from
the animal pig. Due to the increasing demand, improvement in pig breeding technologies in the last
ten years have resulted the commodity of pig production into a high–input, high–output industry
(Food and Agriculture Organization, 2016). Pork has become the leading meat consumption all
around the world thus accounting for over 36% intake as followed by poultry and beef (Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United States, 2014). Pork's global production is recorded to a 111
million tons. According to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Foreign Agriculture
Service (2016), the top ten pork producing countries are as listed from the largest to the smallest
production respectively: (1) China, (2) European Union, (3) United States, (4) Brazil, (5) Russia, (6)
Vietnam, (7) Canada, (8) Philippines, (9) Mexico and (10) Japan. A map below has been placed to
show the top 10 pork production in the world that illustrates each countries thousand metric–tonnes
of pork production in 2016.

Evaluation Of Processed Meats And Other Types Of Cancer
In 2014, an International Advisory Committee convened and recommended the evaluation of
processed and red meats by the International Agency of Research on Cancer (IARC) Monographs
Programme. This recommendation was prompted by studies suggesting some sort of association
between increases in cancer and processed in red meats. 22 experts from 10 countries, reviewed 800
studies and confirmed the positive association of processed and red meats to various types of cancer.
The IARC classified red meat in the group 2A category as probably carcinogenic to humans, due to
limited evidence. The IARC classified processed meats in the Group 1 listing, along with tobacco
smoking and asbestos, as carcinogenic to humans, due to sufficient evidence. It has been proven that
Red meats are categorized as beef, lamb, veal, pork, mutton, horse and goat (Simon, S., 2015).
Processed meats are meats that have been altered to enhance flavor or to improve preservation
through processes such as: salting, curing, fermentation, and smoking. Some examples of processed
meats include but are not limited to bacon, ham and sausage (Simon, S., 2015). Colorectal cancer
has the highest incidence in association to red and processed meats, stomach, pancreatic and prostate
cancer have weaker associations. Colorectal Cancer (CRC), is the third most common cancer
worldwide and the fourth most common cancer resulting in death, accounting for more than 600,000
deaths every year. Incidence rates are highest North

at the lower of cost or market. Section 05–330–32–3 states that animals available and held for sale
are to be valued: a. The lower of cost or market b. At sales price less estimated costs of disposal, if
all the following conditions exist: 1. The product has a reliable, readily determinable, and

Section 330–10–35–9 states that the most common method is to apply the lower of cost or market to
each individual item of inventory. However, Section 330–10–35–10 states that when there is more
than one ending product, the application of the lower of cost or market rule to the total of the items
included in such major categories may result in the most useful determination of income. Therefore,
since the company has three different types of inventory (live hogs ready for sale, developing
animals, and processed pork products) and there are different types of ending products (live animals
and processed products suchs as loins, hams, and bacon) the lower of cost or market should be
applied to the total of the items included in such major categories, i.e. live hogs ready for sale,
developing animals, and processed pork products.
Section 270–10–45 provides guidance on iterim reporting, and paragraph 6, item c, states:
c. Inventory losses from market declines shall not be deferred beyond the interim period in which
the decline occurs. Recoveries of such losses on the same inventory in later interim periods of the
same fiscal year through market price recoveries shall be recognized as gains in the later interim
period. Such gains shall not exceed previously recognized losses. Some market declines at interim
dates, however, can reasonably be expected to be restored in the fiscal year. Such temporary market
declines need not be recognized at

In his article “Boss Hog: The Dark Side of America’s Top...
In his article "Boss Hog: The Dark Side of America's Top Pork Producer," (Rolling Stone Magazine,
December 14, 2006) Jeff Teitz reports that not only are millions upon millions of pigs being abused
and slaughtered each year by America's largest pork producer, but, in turn, the waste produced by
those pigs is polluting, destroying, and even killing others. Teitz begins by revealing that Smithfield
Foods, the world's most profitable pork processor, killed 27 million hogs last year, which is roughly
equivalent to the entire human populations of America's thirty–two largest cities. As Teitz delves
deeper into statistics, he explains that more fecal matter is produced from half a million pigs at one
Smithfield subsidiary than the 1.5 million ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The stench of the hog waste is so foul that workers may quit working in a hog house and still reek
months later. The smell even causes some people to collapse, Teitz explains.
Teitz reveals that Joseph Luter III, the chairman of Smithfield Foods, took over his father's business
and became so successful that he began to purchase other meat–producing factories and dominated
the market in pork production. Teitz states that Luter's company began producing ungodly amounts
of hog waste, which gets dumped into the nation's water. During 1997, Smithfield violated the Clean
Water Act and was fined over $12 million, which was less than one–percent of the company's annual
sales.
Teitz explains that the pig waste is not only toxic to humans, but other creatures as well. Over 4
million fish died in 2003 as a result of pig–waste runoff, but Teitz claims that spills are a minor
problem in comparison to Pfiesteria piscicida, which is a microbe that has killed a billion fish and
left dozens of fishermen delusional and damaged their brains and lungs after breathing in the filthy
air.
Teitz asserts that Smithfield would become bankrupt if the hog–waste problem was completely
solved because there is too much waste to contain. Smithfield has invested $20 million into turning
some of its pig waste into an alternative fuel. As Teitz explains, Luter was not very fond of U.S.
regulators forcing his company to spend money on treating its vile hog waste, so he purchased one

The Extreme Expansion Of The Meat Industry
Today the industries are now dominated by a handful of huge corporations that process most of the
country's meat at several facilities across the country. As of 2007, four huge companies controlled
the processing of over 80% of the country's beef and three of these same companies process over
60% of the country's pork. Chicken processing provides over half the country's chicken supply and
even the same situation exists for turkey meat. These four major companies are Tyson, JBS, Cargill,
and Smithfield Foods. As a result of all, meatpacking companies have become increasingly
powerful, while the government bodies that regulate them have done barely anything to keep them
in line. The extreme expansion of the meat industry has accompanied the ... Show more content on

We do not want another family to have to suffer as our family did." Other diseases like Salmonella
and Campylobacter can also be introduced. In addition to these food safety risks, the use of
hazardous machinery and sharp knives can injure workers when mistakes are made. This danger is
exacerbated by the increasingly rapid speeds at which workers are expected to slaughter and process
animals. This can also cause AIDS and HIV when they come in contact with our foods, if workers
get injured while processing meats. The Federal health authorities have estimated that foodborne
diseases affect 1 in 6 Americans, which is over 48 million people. These diseases cause 128,000

The Relationship Between Porcine And Human Cysticercosis
Some of the other risk factors are linked to both porcine and human cysticercosis. According to
Bhutta et al (2012) ,Garrett et al (2015) and Assana et al (2010), low level hygiene environment
such as dirty contaminated soil and lack of latrine may rise opportunities to access Taeniid ova
because dirty soil can increase the possibility of exposure to taeniid ova for both human and pig and
taeniid ova can flow to water resource like wells in rainy season.
Certainly, according to many of these articles including WHO, the installment of a large number of
latrines can control the risk factor because it can prevent the contamination(WHO 2015), However,
there is the article reporting that public(community) latrine can bring weaker effect and all ... Show

Interestingly, more than 10 members decreased the risk in the result. Although Mwape infer this is
because such large size family cannot consume pork frequently due to the costs, a stronger evidence
would be necessary to prove this. Therefore,a more large–scale observation such as cohort study is
highly recommendable to identify the necessity of latrines in the future.
Each of the resources examines other risk factors why such transmission situation between pig and
human occur from various points of view in detail. Carabin et al(2015) and Edia–Asukeet al(2014)
maintain that the older people, the higher infection rate it is. They infer that the frequency of the
exposure is related to the infection. Interestingly, the change point analysis which determine the
number of people with active infections (cysticercosis)increases from at 30 years old in Zambia.
This result is quite younger than the result in Ecuador under the same analysis (Mwape et al, 2015).
This result could imply that sub–saharan Africa is at higher risk for T. solium infection than Latin
America.
As an interesting site as a possible risk factor, slaughterhouse situations are referred in some articles.
For example, in Nigeria, there is an existing abattoir law to do proper management. However,
various problem is identified from the actual situations. Especially, unregistered and private home

Pork Barreling Essay
Pork barrel legislations is a daily occurrence in American government. Howard Scarrow showcases
this in his May 6th column in The Village Times Herald, "Our bacon, their park." His example of the
recently proposed highway bill is a blatant exposure of pork barrel legislation. He indicates many
causes of this distributive politics that would lead to legislation such as the highway bill. Pork barrel
legislation allows for a congressman to appeal to his constituents by adding on seemingly small
projects that would benefit his district, to a larger bill. This small portion of the legislation is usually
overlooked and passed along with the main part of the bill. In a way distributive politics is a sneaky

Congress. Pet projects like those in the highway bill are possible in American government. James
Madison said that America did not need to worry about factions because in such a large country
there would be so many factions that they would cancel each other out. What Madison did not
anticipate was that these factions would work together to further their own agendas. A sort of "I'll
vote for your part of the bill if you vote for mine." Passing legislation is such a long and
complicated process that can be simplified if the bill just passes. So if every congressmen has a part
of the bill that benefits his district, the bill will be easier to pass. Committees are put together so that
the work in congress can be split up. This results in many bills being passed strictly based on pork
barrel issues. No one opposes anything because to rework a bill is too much work. And why vote
down a bill when your district will benefit from it being passed.
The consequences of federal pork barreling are today's public opinions of Congress. Voters express a
sixty percent approval rating of their own personal representatives. However, voters opinion of

The Population of the Wild Hog is Exploding
Today in America there is a wild dangerous animal that is greatly expanding. It is being seen more
often in neighborhoods more than ever. The wild hog population is currently exploding. These
animals get up to 400 pounds with 6 in long razor sharp teeth. They also have a thick hide and a
armor like plating called a shield around their chest area. They are destroying Americas agriculture
industry as well as peoples property. By digging their snouts into the earth and flipping it up to eat
plant roots. This is called rooting. A group of hogs can root and destroy several acres of crops or
land in a single night. Wild hogs were first introduced to America by the Spanish as a domestic
animal used for meat. Over time these animals escaped and began free ranging and breeding. They
quickly became wild. In the 1930's owners of ranches introduced Russian boars to be shot in game
preserves. These Russian boars grow much larger, are more aggressive and have larger, sharper
teeth. When they escaped, cross breeding occurred that introduced the genes that gave America the
hybrid feral swine they have today. These animals are not only a threat to the economy but they are
also a threat to people, other wildlife and the native

How The Pig Farming Industry Affects Our Environment
The hog farming industry has always been one of controversy when it comes to its effects on the
environment, and with the green house gas emissions a pig farm produces and the spread of disease
through swine this is with good reason. Although the truth is that the industry has come a very long
way in the past 50 years in regards to its sustainability. The pig farming industry as a whole has been
able to reduce its overall environmental impact and natural resources use by 50% in the past 50
years according to a study done by Garth Boyd a well known researcher on environmental footprints
(Boyd). Even with the improvements made by the pig farming industry there is still a need for
change and major improvement in sustainable practices. First I will discuss how the pig farming
industry effects our environment. Although it is true a pig farm needs water and land to operate, the
use of those natural resources is not the major problem with pig farms. It is what goes in the air that
is of concern. The pig manure and the decomposition of the manure over time release three major
gases of concern, methane, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide. There are other gaseous compounds that
may be emitted from decomposing manure but these three are the principal gases in emissions. The
level of emissions released by a farm will vary based on the amount of manure being managed as
well as the type of manure management system the farm has in place. Flush pit with lagoon, deep

Write An Essay On Pork Tapeworms
A pork tapeworm, also known as a Taenia Solium, is a certain type of tapeworm that can infect
people who eat raw pork or under cooked pork. Pork tapeworms can survive in human intestines for
up to 25 years, or even longer, and it shows little to no symptoms. If the eggs from the worm are
digested this can cause a extremely serious condition called Cysticercosis, which hatches the egg
and releases the larva, which migrates to other parts of the body like the brain and eyes, which can
lead to neurocysticercosis, causing epileptic seizures and psychiatric disturbances. Tapeworms are
hermaphrodites, which means they have both female and male gonads to generate both sperm and
eggs. They reproduce sexually, either through self–fertilization ... Show more content on

Some patients with pork tapeworms have symptoms of diarrhea, nausea, weakness and decreased
appetite. People infected with the worm may not even have symptoms or any idea that the worm is
even inside them. Cysts are able to form on the brain and spinal cord, which could lead to seizures
or symptoms that are similar to a brain tumor. Cysts on a spinal cord can result in difficulty walking
and weakness. In very rare cases, death has occurred. They can also affect the organs in the body
near the intestinal and abdominal area. If worms reach the heart, this can cause heart failure and
heart arrhythmias. Eye blindness and vision loss are results of eye lesions. The worms typically
don't take up too much space, however if they grow to be too large this can cause blockage. A
tapeworms habitat is inside the intestines of humans. Its life is carried out between two hosts, one
being the man host and the other is the pig host. Except for the adults, the life is carried out through
the body of the secondary host, which would be the pig. Injuries to the mucous membrane lining are
a result of the worm living in the intestines. It can even cause mechanical injury of the alimentary
canal which causes weakness, abdominal pain, and extreme loss of

Pork : A Central Role Diet And Culture Of The Chinese The...
Pork plays a central role in diet and culture of the Chinese–the world's largest consumers of pork. In
Chinese, and Cantonese specifically in my case, no distinction is made between the word "meat" and
"pork"–they are one and the same. As the Chinese's socioeconomic status continues to rise, so does
their demand for meat. To adapt to the ever growing demand, China's meat industry has changed a
lot in the past few decades. From a state of rationing the limited supply of meat to only urban
citizens, China has now become the largest meat–producing country in the world. Prior to 2007,
China had been able to maintain self–sufficiency in pork production; however, since 2007, China's
pork imports have had an annual growth rate of 150%. The Chinese's growing appetite for pork and
other meat products has affected the Chinese agricultural community greatly, with the shift from the
traditional small–scale farmer to the mass production of swine by large corporations. The effects of
the Chinese appetite for pork is not contained within China's borders; China's shift to dependency on
pork imports have implications for international trade. China is no longer self–sufficient when it
comes to pork, and while it may not be easy to support a fifth of the world's population on less than
ten percent of the world's arable land, it is only a matter of time before the world will be unable to
support the Chinese's insatiable appetite for pork. Meat consumption has risen with the rise of

How Hot Dogs Are Made
How Hot Dogs Are Made One day you plan to have a barbeque. All of the hot–dogs you made were
devoured. But, do you really know what is in the hot–dog? Probably not. You may think, "It smells
good, and looks good. I guess I'll eat it." What if you were told that they could cause cancer? Or that
they are made of ground up, extra meat by–products? People may be surprised about what
ingredients actually make up hot dogs.
HEALTH RISKS First, there are different types of hot–dogs. The ones that can cause cancer are
cooked or baked differently. (Global Healing Center 1), "During the cooking process, nitrites
combine with amines naturally present in meat to form carcinogenic N–nitroso compounds. It is also
suspected that nitrites can combine with amines in the human stomach to form N–nitroso
compounds." Like what GHC said, to sum it up, nitrites combine with carcinogenic N–nitroso
compounds to form a chemical or disease like compound that will give or increase the risk of
someone to get cancer. Do you still want to eat hot–dogs? There is more to be said.

The Day Of The Family Farm Days
The days of the family farm days are over. For decades, there has been such an exorbitant consumer
demand for pork products. The consumer demand is so high that pork is now a multibillion–dollar
industry, Swann (2014). Now the family farm has evolved into what critics call "factory farms" due
to high consumer demand for affordable meat pork products in the United States (p.43).
This mass production calls for animals to be forced to live in confined spaces and operate a breeding
system for mass production. The system of confinement is a 114–day gestation period in a "sow
gestation stall," about two feet wide by seven feet long (p.43).

Those in the business of selling pork have their own argument claiming that they do not mistreat
animals, they even go so far as to claim that they, "take great care to feed and shelter their animals
properly." In fact, the pork industry argues gestation stalls are a safer and more nutritional way to
raise sows indoors (p.46). This is a perfect example of "managing perception" (Moore, 2014).
Plato's Republic and Sir Thomas Moore's Utopia (1516), agree that communication in civic society
can be used to deceive. They assert that there is a moral challenge to deceive and communicate
(p.24). Moore (2014), also asserts that there are similarities between The Republic and Machiavelli's
The Prince (1513), who advise rulers how to manage media to hold onto power by using deceit if
necessary, rather than by cultivating virtue in individual citizens. The pork industry, similar to
Plato's philosophy in The Republic, is a proponent of the abuse of power and a little necessary
dishonesty (p,25).
The fact that the pork industry organizations make a profit and collect a "small" fee for every hog
sold in the U.S. and on imported hogs or pork products, generating about $78 million

Los Angeles California: My Favorite Place to Visit Essay
Los Angeles California My Favorite Place To Visit
Los Angeles is one of the most exciting cities in the United States. According to the Los Angeles
post record tourist numbers in 2012, the city attracts 41.4 million visitors per year. Even though the
traffic is terrible, Los Angeles is still one of my favorite places because of the many restaurants to
dine in, and the many wonderful attractions.
Traffic in Los Angeles is implausible. The streets are congested from morning to night and everyone
seems to be in a hurry from the walkers to the drivers. My first time in Los Angeles the traffic was
so bad that crossing the street literally scared me; I stood there for the longest time, looking at the

in Los Angeles: The Taste of Soul Festival, a community event held on the famous Crenshaw
Boulevard where the people of Los Angeles come together as one. People also come from others
states to enjoy this event. There is singing, dancing, competitions, games and activities. The festival
includes live bands comprised of R&B, jazz, country, gospel and much more. Many vendors also
participate in this event, selling food such as hotdogs, sausages, fish, crabs, chicken, cotton candy
and ice cream. This is a big event. According to the Los Angeles Sentinel, more than 300,000 people
attended in 2012. One of the best times of my stay in Los Angeles was being a part of this event. My
favorite enjoyment was the live Gospel Music, the steppers, and the great seafood.
In conclusion, I think everyone should visit Los Angeles at least once in his or her lifetime. Even
though the traffic is terrible, there is always something to do and somewhere to go. Los Angeles is

The Virus Is Contagious And Mutate
The ASF virus is highly contagious and spreads rapidly in pig populations through direct and
indirect contact. This virus can persist for long periods in pig products and the environment, and
may be endemic in feral or wild suids and in Ornithodoros ticks. Isolates of ASFV vary in virulence;
some strains are highly pathogenic, resulting in almost 100% mortality while others are low–
virulence or asymptomatic isolates that can be difficult to diagnose [1].

Even North American swine herds are at elevated risk of accidental or deliberate ASFV introduction
from its widespread occurrence in Eastern Europe. Unlike most trans–boundary viral infections,
there is no vaccine available against ASFV. Consequently, detection and elimination of infected
animals (surveillance) combined with quarantine, pig movement controls and high herd bio–security
are the only methods to control and eradicate ASF [3]. This approach is costly and often
prohibitively expensive for food–insecure and developing countries affected by the disease,
increasing the probability of ASF becoming endemic in those regions. African swine fever virus
control is further complicated by its complex ecology and transmission epidemiology. In addition to
infection by direct and indirect (fomite) contact among confined domestic swine, wild suids, and
feral domestic hogs, soft bodied ticks (Genus Ornithodoros) can transmit ASF and serve as virus
reservoirs. Many wild boars in Russia and the Caucasus have been infected by ASF since 2007, and
there is evidence that some pigs may become carriers [4] The Ornithodoros tick vector is also
present in this region. However, the roles played by wild boars, feral swine and tick vectors in ASFV
eco–epidemiology and transmission in the Caucasus are unknown at this time. Humans are not

Why We Should Eat Pork
It seems clear that, there are various different reasons why we consume pork and many people
would feel that all these reasons are enough to justify and explain its consumption. This could be
down to the nutritional value of the meat, the idea that if we didn't eat pigs then they wouldn't exist
in the first place and the philosophical views on the consumption of meat in the first place.
However, my research has also shown that there are many reasons why people feel we should not
eat pork. The next section of my essay will look into the arguments against the consumptions of
pork and the reasons for this view.

The researchers also found that it's possible to train pigs and teach them different talents, such as
jumping hoops, bowing and playing video games as well as being able to learn routines quickly.
Many other scientists have also shown that pigs are highly intelligent, for example , 'We have shown
that pigs share a number of cognitive capacities with other highly intelligent species such as dogs,
chimpanzees, elephants, dolphins, and even humans, ' said neuroscientist Lori Marino of Emory
University . It was also discovered that pigs can understand basic symbolic language and learn
multiple signs for actions as well as placing coloured pig–shaped blocks in the correct coloured
holes on a wooden board. They found that the pig can do this using its mouth and on its own. The
Discovery News has also reported that, 'pigs have complex social networks, with them often
learning from one another and cooperating together.'
Lastly, researchers in the Netherlands carried out an experiment to understand the behaviours of pigs
in more depth. The experiment went as follows: pigs were placed in 16 groups of six, two of the
pigs in each of the groups were trained to expect either happiness or distress. This was done by
playing them music and either rewarding them with a treat such as chocolate raisins, or putting them
in a stressful situation, such as keeping them in isolation in a small pen. After that, untrained pigs

The Human Rights Of The United States
From the beginning of time the excessive desire for money and power of the few has led to stepping
on and taking away the basic human rights of the masses. From the slaves of the ancient days to the
under paid of today. The working man has hungered not just to live pay check to pay check, but to
live comfortably after putting in a good days work. To be able to go to the hospital over work related
and non–work related injuries without spending the rest of their lives in debt. To work in decent
conditions where the demand for speed and mass production is set at a reasonable pace. In the meat
industry it has been a century long war to win basic human rights. In the 1950's butchers and
slaughterhouse workers made decent wages that could support their families. Things shifted when
companies started getting too big wanting larger and larger profits with lower and lower production
costs. The worker is then treated the same as the animal to be slaughtered. In order to affect change
the working masses organized. Uniting under one cause against the evil of corporate greed.
When cattle first came to America with the Europeans it was a simpler time. The cattle were set lose
to graze in the forests and slaughtered as needed. In the 1800's livestock started becoming more and

Research Question
Although a big part of German exports consist of low–technology products, almost all research
about factors influencing internationalisation of new ventures, has been done focusing on companies
that operate in the high–technology industry. The environment in which these firms operate is very
different from the environment in which low–technology firms operate. High–technology firms face
high R&D costs, short product life cycles and mostly operate in niche markets (Knight & Cavusgill,
2004). These conditions are very different for low–tech firms (Evers, 2010). Here, R&D costs and
product life cycles play no significant role. Since studies about new venture internationalisation are
so heavily grounded in the high–tech sector, little is known about the factors that affect the
internationalisation of firms in the low–tech sector. This raises the possibility that past findings do
not generalize equally well to all economic sectors (Zahra & George, 2002). Furthermore, little
research has been done about how environmental factors influence new venture internationalisation,
and more research is necessary to find out how these factors influence early internationalisation
(Fernhaber, 2007). Environmental factors are factors that a firm cannot control, and that are part of
the external environment they operate in (Zou and Stan, 1998). These factors can have a significant
push and pull effect on new ventures to internationalise

consumption of fresh meat decreased by 1550 due to the Black Death for the past 2 centuries and
more land was used for agriculture but not stock rearing. Since then, salting meat became popular

The Cultural Celebration Of Puerto Rico
When we are young, we don't pay much attention to our family & culture food traditions. Maybe we

Jewish Abhor Pork
This article mainly focuses on the reasoning why the Jews abhor pork and the inability of Romans to
understand the Jewish practices and regard the Jews actions as "peculiar behavior." In "Why Do You
Refuse to Eat Pork", the first half of the article focuses on the Roman's point of view on pork in
opposition to the Jews. Roman satirists make fun of the Jews for not consuming pork. The Romans
portray pigs as extremely prominent and they were one of the four most commonly sacrificed
animals. This adds to the reason why the Romans could not fathom the practices of the Jews. While
Roman texts either casually note or mock the Jewish pork taboo, only Jewish sources describe
explicit interactions with particular Jews and/or the pig into a metonym.

The Causes Of The Failure Of Capitalism In The Jungle By...
The Jungle by Upton Sinclair was written to expose the brutality faced by the workers in the
meatpacking industry. He wanted to show people what was really going on in the factory because
few people were informed about these companies" work conditions". He wanted to show the public
that meat was diseased, rotten, and contaminated. This revelation shocked the public which later led
to the creation of the federal laws on food and safety. Sinclair strongly shows the failure of
capitalism in the meatpacking industry which he viewed as inhuman, destructive, unjust, brutal, and
violent. (Middlebury) Sinclair was an American writer born in Baltimore. He was struggling to live
a basic life, and he started reading about socialism. He believed that America would vote for
peaceful negations , So the government will take ownership of its business. He then joined the
socialist party in 1903, He began to write for the company "Appeal To Reason" which was a
socialist magazine. The meat packing company workers went on strikes, the strikes broke quickly
because the company replaced the workers. This, kept the line running and the other families became
Impoverished . After this incident , the Appeal to Reason suggested him to write about the strikes.
He went to Chicago to research about the conditions of the workers, and he personally interviewed
the workers in the factories . Later his writing became very famous and contained obvious basia.

Traditional Burgers on the Grill
If you want to enjoy a grilled burger on your indoor grill, you can cook with lean hamburger. The
type of the seasonings that you use will matter for the calorie count, too. We suggest using dry
seasonings that won't add many calories. Salt and pepper are simple ingredients that can add an
incredible amount of flavor. After the meat is cooked, add vegetables and onions for a great burger
that doesn't need a ton of condiments.
Instead of using hamburger or adding pork to the mixture, you can use turkey burger for a lighter
alternative to burger meat. You can add the same seasonings to the turkey and have a flavorful
burger that will definitely have less fat and calories.
Either way, the grill will pull the fat and grease away from the meat and channel it down into the
drip tray where you won't have to worry about putting that grease into your body.
Pork Grilling
Any cut of pork that has loin in the name is one that has less fat. For example, pork tenderloin is one
of the leanest parts of the meat. Country–style ribs have less calories than baby back or spare ribs,
too. That's because country–style ribs have a dry rub instead of smearing barbecue sauce on the ribs
that are filled with sugar.

Red Meat Research Paper
crowleys.butchery.com.au – The Nutritional Values of Red Meat
Red meat is full of all sorts of nutrients that are beneficial for the growth and health of the human
body. The definition of this meat at least in Australian terms is the meat that comes from cattle, goat
and sheep. It does not include meat from such animals as pigs, kangaroo, chickens, turkey and
buffalo. When you purchase red meat, you will notice that it contains lean or muscle tissue along
with fat tissue, which can be both throughout the lean tissue as marbling or around the outside of the
particular cut of meat. A butcher typically trims off this excess fat to ensure the cut is as lean as
possible.
Protein Content
The protein content of red meat ranges from 20g up to 36g per 100g, depending on whether it is raw

Changing Lives with the Fifth Agrement by Don Miguel Ruiz
The Fifth Agreement
Published in 2011, The Fifth Agreement is a sequel to The Fourth Agreement, and offers another
powerful agreement for changing lives. The authors Don Miguel Ruiz and his son Don Jose Ruiz
inspire the readers to see the truth and to alter the message they communicate to themselves and the
people around them. According to them, the fifth agreement is the pathway to complete inner peace
and self–satisfaction. Whereas the first four agreements are about breaking free from thousands of
agreements that create unnecessary suffering, the fifth agreement helps regain the power of
authenticity, which is the true character that we are born with. These agreements are 1) be
impeccable with your words, 2) don't take anything personally, 3) don't make assumptions, 4)
always do your best, and 5) be skeptical, but learn to listen.
The authors include stories from the Bible, and make reference to heaven and hell to demonstrate
their point. At the beginning of the novel, they talk about the relationship between God and men. In
the story, God and Adam are walking around together, when God asks him how he would like to
name everything (Ruiz and Ruiz 20). It is in this conversation between God and Adam that the
authors explain the meaning of objective and subjective perceptions. God tells Adam that our
objective perception is the truth, and it is called science; our interpretation of the truth is subjective,
and we call it art (Ruiz and Ruiz 21). Men are born with a sense

The per capita annual pork consumption level in mainland China, which is at 33.8 kilograms, is
among the highest in the world; only Hong Kong, the European Union, and Taiwan, countries or
regions with relatively higher per capita incomes, are higher. With sustained economic growth in the
last decade in the range of 7.11% to 14.24% and with limited land area for feed grain production,
China was expected to become a major importer of pork when, with its accession to the World Trade
Organization, it would drop its duties on pork from 20% to 12%, and when it would allow foreign
participation in pork distribution in the domestic market. But so far China has remained a small net
exporter, averaging 40,000 metric tons from 1999 to 2003. Market penetration by foreign suppliers
is believed to be modest because a large portion of China's pork supply is still produced by backyard
producers, whereby surplus family labor is mostly used, investment in animal housing structure is
very limited, and feeding practices utilize table scraps, vegetables, green fodder, and unprocessed
grains and oilseeds, keeping production costs low. In the last decade, the share of backyard
producers has declined and growth in hog production has come mostly from specialized households
with much larger operations compared with backyard producers, with 30 to 500 hogs in annual
production. These farms still depend mostly on family labor

An Industry Study On The Intensive Pig Farming Industry

  • 1. An Industry Study on the Intensive Pig Farming Industry Executive Summary Intensive pig farming is an agricultural industry that operates by raising live pigs for slaughtering which will then be turned into pork for human consumption. Piggeries, as the firm is called, serve as a major food source in the Philippines, with the highest grossing per capita consumption among red meats. The industry is fairly attractive to investors as its high capital requirement and risky nature is effectively balanced out by the steady demand of a readily available market. The competitive structure of the industry consists of two groups. The first being commercial firms, examples of the biggest are Robina, Monterey and Foremost farms. These firms partake in large scale production of pigs; with herds usually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thus, intensive piggeries are widely used by commercial companies that engage in the sale of pigs. In a highly urbanized world, the method of family farming is increasingly proving obsolete. Family or backyard farming is continually being pushed into the periphery, as the waste and smell, among other economic externalities find little tolerance among the urban population. In the United States, and other highly industrialized countries, backyard farming can no longer keep up with the competitive prices and efficient processes available to firms. Here in the Philippines, the situation is quite different: Family farming remains relevant spanning over 75 percent of the total swine stock although not necessarily threatening the top commercial firms due to the disparity in targeted market segments. Commercial firms into intensive pig farming show greater dominance in Metro Manila and specific urban areas. Demand is also concentrated in the peripheral regions of the Metro, specifically Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog. In comparison, backyard farms cater extensively to the rural wet markets. The industry is in its growth stage with Monterey, Robina Farms, and Foremost as its key players. With regards to the market, firms concerned with intensive pig–farming hold less than a fourth of the market share. Firms, therefore have room for expansion of operations. With regards to their product, although limited by its nature, there is still room ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. History And Origins Of Swine History/Background The history of swine or pigs is very long. It can be traced to fossils dating back 40 million years, or to the Biblical creation. Depending on who is telling the story, the history is bound to differ. Since pigs were first domesticated and production spread throughout the world, a great deal has changed in the industry. People have gone from raising a few pigs in their yard for the family to survive the winter to huge commercial farms which are specialized in farrowing or finishing. The Swine industry has grown immensely and become quite concentrated, whether this is a good or bad thing is once again up to the bias of the narrator. Pigs date back 40 million years to fossils according to Pork checkoff, however as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were a number of pigs that escaped as Hernando's herd grew upwards to 700 head, those that escaped became wild pigs, which are very likely the ancestors of today's feral or razorback pigs. Pig production spread quickly through the colonies. They were introduced to New Mexico in 1600 by Hernando Cortes, and Jamestown in Virgina in 1607 by Sir Walter Raleigh. By the close of the 17th century, the average farmer had four or five pigs which he raised to supply salt pork and bacon for his own family. It wasn't until after the Revolutionary War that pioneers header west, taking their pigs with them and growing the American herd. Packing plants began to spring up in major cities. (Pork Checkoff, 2009–2011). Changes in the Structure of the U.S. Pork Industry The United States has made a significant shift in swine production during the past two decades. The countryside used to be filled with small operations that raised hogs and crops. However, the industry has become much more concentrated among large operations. Single phase operations are much more prominent and replaced most of the farrow–to–finish operations. Between 1992 and 2004 the number of hog farms fell by more than 70%, yet the hog inventory remained stable as the average operation grew from 945 head in 1992 to 4,646 in 2004 (Key & McBride, 2007). Small family farmer operations could not compete with the commercial farms. "In less than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Chipotle Ethical Dilemmas When you are feeling down in the dumps, you have two options. Option A: go to the doctor to get an antibiotic to help you feel better, or Option B: just stick it out, feel terrible for an extended amount of time, and infect some other people with the same sickness along the way. Since the late 1800's, most people have been choosing option A. In today's society, most people don't think twice about having an antibiotic prescribed to them. Unfortunately, though, many activists challenge this theory and falsely accuse agriculturalists for infecting the food chain with antibiotics and hormones. The word "antibiotic" in the livestock industry endures an extremely toasty topic. This word appears on Facebook posts, Twitter feeds, and in television news. Antibiotics receive an unfair assessment, when in reality, the word is just one large miscommunication between agriculturists like myself, and the public consumers. October 20th, 2015 was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This consumer lives in a large city, has no agriculture background, and believes all that they see on different types of media. As this consumer, I would agree with the Chipotle. Chipotle makes an impressive case against antibiotic use in livestock. I would begin to believe that what they say is true. However, when I again don my muck boots, I know that antibiotics are not used to increase production or combat effects of overcrowding. Antibiotics are used only to help an animal just like humans get over a sickness when necessary. Chipotle also claims they serve pork from pigs allowed to freely root and roam outdoors or in deeply bedded barns (Chipotle np). Activists claim they want animals to be raised this way, however, this strategy does not eliminate sickness. Contrary to Chipotle's statements, statistically, no data is present to assist their claims. Removing antibiotics from farms and ranches is simply dangerous to our ability to continue raising healthy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It pulls aside the curtain that is concealing the truth about food from the consumer. After the brief intro, the movie shifts its focus to the topic of fast food and its impact on the meat industries. Fast food virtually started with McDonald's. When they decided to simplify their menu and hire employees that repeated one task over and over for minimum wage, the result was the fast food phenomenon that swept the United States, and then the world. The food industry has become consolidated to the point of a few companies having a great deal of power and influence via the government. The USDA is no longer able to shutdown plants with contaminated meat. A bill titled "Kevin's Law" had the intent of changing that, but, after 6 years, the bill still has not been passed. Food companies have made some attempts to reduce E. coli by cleaning their meats in an ammonia solution. However, unhealthy food is being subsidized and contributing to American obesity and the rise of type 2 diabetes in adolescents. The film then travels to a hog processing plant that kills 32,000 hogs a day. The Pork Impact On Economy And Consumption Meaningful Title Maechel Ramos GEO 509 Ryerson University Fall 2016 November 14, 2016 Introduction This paper will explore the pork impact on economy and consumption. Pork Production Many meats that are eaten today comes from domestic animal including pork, which is derived from the animal pig. Due to the increasing demand, improvement in pig breeding technologies in the last ten years have resulted the commodity of pig production into a high–input, high–output industry (Food and Agriculture Organization, 2016). • 19. Evaluation Of Processed Meats And Other Types Of Cancer In 2014, an International Advisory Committee convened and recommended the evaluation of processed and red meats by the International Agency of Research on Cancer (IARC) Monographs Programme. This recommendation was prompted by studies suggesting some sort of association between increases in cancer and processed in red meats. 22 experts from 10 countries, reviewed 800 studies and confirmed the positive association of processed and red meats to various types of cancer. The IARC classified red meat in the group 2A category as probably carcinogenic to humans, due to limited evidence. The IARC classified processed meats in the Group 1 listing, along with tobacco smoking and asbestos, as carcinogenic to humans, due to sufficient evidence. It has been proven that Red meats are categorized as beef, lamb, veal, pork, mutton, horse and goat (Simon, S., 2015). Processed meats are meats that have been altered to enhance flavor or to improve preservation through processes such as: salting, curing, fermentation, and smoking. Some examples of processed meats include but are not limited to bacon, ham and sausage (Simon, S., 2015). Colorectal cancer has the highest incidence in association to red and processed meats, stomach, pancreatic and prostate cancer have weaker associations. Therefore, since the company has three different types of inventory (live hogs ready for sale, developing animals, and processed pork products) and there are different types of ending products (live animals and processed products suchs as loins, hams, and bacon) the lower of cost or market should be applied to the total of the items included in such major categories, i.e. live hogs ready for sale, developing animals, and processed pork products. In his article "Boss Hog: The Dark Side of America's Top Pork Producer," (Rolling Stone Magazine, December 14, 2006) Jeff Teitz reports that not only are millions upon millions of pigs being abused and slaughtered each year by America's largest pork producer, but, in turn, the waste produced by those pigs is polluting, destroying, and even killing others. Teitz begins by revealing that Smithfield Foods, the world's most profitable pork processor, killed 27 million hogs last year, which is roughly equivalent to the entire human populations of America's thirty–two largest cities. As Teitz delves deeper into statistics, he explains that more fecal matter is produced from half a million pigs at one Smithfield subsidiary than the 1.5 million ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The stench of the hog waste is so foul that workers may quit working in a hog house and still reek months later. The smell even causes some people to collapse, Teitz explains. Teitz reveals that Joseph Luter III, the chairman of Smithfield Foods, took over his father's business and became so successful that he began to purchase other meat–producing factories and dominated the market in pork production. Teitz states that Luter's company began producing ungodly amounts of hog waste, which gets dumped into the nation's water. During 1997, Smithfield violated the Clean Water Act and was fined over $12 million, which was less than one–percent of the company's annual sales. Teitz explains that the pig waste is not only toxic to humans, but other creatures as well. Over 4 million fish died in 2003 as a result of pig–waste runoff, but Teitz claims that spills are a minor problem in comparison to Pfiesteria piscicida, which is a microbe that has killed a billion fish and left dozens of fishermen delusional and damaged their brains and lungs after breathing in the filthy air. Teitz asserts that Smithfield would become bankrupt if the hog–waste problem was completely solved because there is too much waste to contain. Smithfield has invested $20 million into turning some of its pig waste into an alternative fuel. As Teitz explains, Luter was not very fond of U.S. regulators forcing his company to spend money on treating its vile hog waste, so he purchased one of Poland's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Extreme Expansion Of The Meat Industry Today the industries are now dominated by a handful of huge corporations that process most of the country's meat at several facilities across the country. Chicken processing provides over half the country's chicken supply and even the same situation exists for turkey meat. These four major companies are Tyson, JBS, Cargill, and Smithfield Foods. He indicates many causes of this distributive politics that would lead to legislation such as the highway bill. Pork barrel legislation allows for a congressman to appeal to his constituents by adding on seemingly small projects that would benefit his district, to a larger bill. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pork barrel legislation is a way for congressmen to show their voters what great projects they can get funded and use those programs to get reelected. Distributive politics has flourished in American government because of legislative processes in Congress. Pet projects like those in the highway bill are possible in American government. James Madison said that America did not need to worry about factions because in such a large country there would be so many factions that they would cancel each other out. What Madison did not anticipate was that these factions would work together to further their own agendas. A sort of "I'll vote for your part of the bill if you vote for mine." Passing legislation is such a long and complicated process that can be simplified if the bill just passes. So if every congressmen has a part of the bill that benefits his district, the bill will be easier to pass. Committees are put together so that the work in congress can be split up. This results in many bills being passed strictly based on pork barrel issues. No one opposes anything because to rework a bill is too much work. The wild hog population is currently exploding. These animals get up to 400 pounds with 6 in long razor sharp teeth. They also have a thick hide and a armor like plating called a shield around their chest area. They are destroying Americas agriculture industry as well as peoples property. By digging their snouts into the earth and flipping it up to eat plant roots. This is called rooting. A group of hogs can root and destroy several acres of crops or land in a single night. Wild hogs were first introduced to America by the Spanish as a domestic animal used for meat. Over time these animals escaped and began free ranging and breeding. They quickly became wild. In the 1930's owners of ranches introduced Russian boars to be shot in game preserves. These Russian boars grow much larger, are more aggressive and have larger, sharper teeth. How The Pig Farming Industry Affects Our Environment The hog farming industry has always been one of controversy when it comes to its effects on the environment, and with the green house gas emissions a pig farm produces and the spread of disease through swine this is with good reason. Although the truth is that the industry has come a very long way in the past 50 years in regards to its sustainability. The pig farming industry as a whole has been able to reduce its overall environmental impact and natural resources use by 50% in the past 50 years according to a study done by Garth Boyd a well known researcher on environmental footprints (Boyd). Even with the improvements made by the pig farming industry there is still a need for change and major improvement in sustainable practices. First I will discuss how the pig farming industry effects our environment. Although it is true a pig farm needs water and land to operate, the use of those natural resources is not the major problem with pig farms. It is what goes in the air that is of concern. The pig manure and the decomposition of the manure over time release three major gases of concern, methane, ammonia, and hydrogen sulfide. There are other gaseous compounds that may be emitted from decomposing manure but these three are the principal gases in emissions. The level of emissions released by a farm will vary based on the amount of manure being managed as well as the type of manure management system the farm has in place. • 45. Pork : A Central Role Diet And Culture Of The Chinese The... Pork plays a central role in diet and culture of the Chinese–the world's largest consumers of pork. In Chinese, and Cantonese specifically in my case, no distinction is made between the word "meat" and "pork"–they are one and the same. As the Chinese's socioeconomic status continues to rise, so does their demand for meat. To adapt to the ever growing demand, China's meat industry has changed a lot in the past few decades. From a state of rationing the limited supply of meat to only urban citizens, China has now become the largest meat–producing country in the world. Prior to 2007, China had been able to maintain self–sufficiency in pork production; however, since 2007, China's pork imports have had an annual growth rate of 150%. The Chinese's growing appetite for pork and other meat products has affected the Chinese agricultural community greatly, with the shift from the traditional small–scale farmer to the mass production of swine by large corporations. The effects of the Chinese appetite for pork is not contained within China's borders; China's shift to dependency on pork imports have implications for international trade. China is no longer self–sufficient when it comes to pork, and while it may not be easy to support a fifth of the world's population on less than ten percent of the world's arable land, it is only a matter of time before the world will be unable to support the Chinese's insatiable appetite for pork. Every year for the past two years, I have had the pleasure of going to one of the biggest attractions in Los Angeles: The Taste of Soul Festival, a community event held on the famous Crenshaw Boulevard where the people of Los Angeles come together as one. People also come from others states to enjoy this event. There is singing, dancing, competitions, games and activities. The festival includes live bands comprised of R&B, jazz, country, gospel and much more. Many vendors also participate in this event, selling food such as hotdogs, sausages, fish, crabs, chicken, cotton candy and ice cream. This is a big event. According to the Los Angeles Sentinel, more than 300,000 people attended in 2012. One of the best times of my stay in Los Angeles was being a part of this event. My favorite enjoyment was the live Gospel Music, the steppers, and the great seafood. In conclusion, I think everyone should visit Los Angeles at least once in his or her lifetime. This virus can persist for long periods in pig products and the environment, and may be endemic in feral or wild suids and in Ornithodoros ticks. Isolates of ASFV vary in virulence; some strains are highly pathogenic, resulting in almost 100% mortality while others are low– virulence or asymptomatic isolates that can be difficult to diagnose [1]. 1.1.1 History Discovery of the disease Notable epidemics/epizootics/outbreaks of this disease Historical mortality Once endemic in the Iberian Peninsula, ASFV was successfully eradicated from the European Union (EU) at the end of the 1990s after a prolonged 30 year effort. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even North American swine herds are at elevated risk of accidental or deliberate ASFV introduction from its widespread occurrence in Eastern Europe. Unlike most trans–boundary viral infections, there is no vaccine available against ASFV. Consequently, detection and elimination of infected animals (surveillance) combined with quarantine, pig movement controls and high herd bio–security are the only methods to control and eradicate ASF [3]. This approach is costly and often prohibitively expensive for food–insecure and developing countries affected by the disease, increasing the probability of ASF becoming endemic in those regions. African swine fever virus control is further complicated by its complex ecology and transmission epidemiology. In addition to infection by direct and indirect (fomite) contact among confined domestic swine, wild suids, and feral domestic hogs, soft bodied ticks (Genus Ornithodoros) can transmit ASF and serve as virus reservoirs. Many wild boars in Russia and the Caucasus have been infected by ASF since 2007, and there is evidence that some pigs may become carriers [4] The Ornithodoros tick vector is also present in this region. However, the roles played by wild boars, feral swine and tick vectors in ASFV eco–epidemiology and transmission in the Caucasus are unknown at this time. Humans are not ... Why We Should Eat Pork It seems clear that, there are various different reasons why we consume pork and many people would feel that all these reasons are enough to justify and explain its consumption. This could be down to the nutritional value of the meat, the idea that if we didn't eat pigs then they wouldn't exist in the first place and the philosophical views on the consumption of meat in the first place. However, my research has also shown that there are many reasons why people feel we should not eat pork. The next section of my essay will look into the arguments against the consumptions of pork and the reasons for this view. The researchers also found that it's possible to train pigs and teach them different talents, such as jumping hoops, bowing and playing video games as well as being able to learn routines quickly. Many other scientists have also shown that pigs are highly intelligent, for example , 'We have shown that pigs share a number of cognitive capacities with other highly intelligent species such as dogs, chimpanzees, elephants, dolphins, and even humans, ' said neuroscientist Lori Marino of Emory University . It was also discovered that pigs can understand basic symbolic language and learn multiple signs for actions as well as placing coloured pig–shaped blocks in the correct coloured holes on a wooden board. They found that the pig can do this using its mouth and on its own. The Discovery News has also reported that, 'pigs have complex social networks, with them often learning from one another and cooperating together.' Lastly, researchers in the Netherlands carried out an experiment to understand the behaviours of pigs in more depth. The experiment went as follows: pigs were placed in 16 groups of six, two of the pigs in each of the groups were trained to expect either happiness or distress. This was done by playing them music and either rewarding them with a treat such as chocolate raisins, or putting them in a stressful situation, such as keeping them in isolation in a small pen. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 518). Research Question Although a big part of German exports consist of low–technology products, almost all research about factors influencing internationalisation of new ventures, has been done focusing on companies that operate in the high–technology industry. The environment in which these firms operate is very different from the environment in which low–technology firms operate. High–technology firms face high R&D costs, short product life cycles and mostly operate in niche markets (Knight & Cavusgill, 2004). These conditions are very different for low–tech firms (Evers, 2010). Here, R&D costs and product life cycles play no significant role. Since studies about new venture internationalisation are so heavily grounded in the high–tech sector, little is known about the factors that affect the internationalisation of firms in the low–tech sector. This raises the possibility that past findings do not generalize equally well to all economic sectors (Zahra & George, 2002). Furthermore, little research has been done about how environmental factors influence new venture internationalisation,

Jewish Abhor Pork This article mainly focuses on the reasoning why the Jews abhor pork and the inability of Romans to understand the Jewish practices and regard the Jews actions as "peculiar behavior." In "Why Do You Refuse to Eat Pork", the first half of the article focuses on the Roman's point of view on pork in opposition to the Jews. Roman satirists make fun of the Jews for not consuming pork. The Romans portray pigs as extremely prominent and they were one of the four most commonly sacrificed animals. This adds to the reason why the Romans could not fathom the practices of the Jews. While Roman texts either casually note or mock the Jewish pork taboo, only Jewish sources describe explicit interactions with particular Jews and/or the pig into a metonym. ... He wanted to show people what was really going on in the factory because few people were informed about these companies" work conditions". He wanted to show the public that meat was diseased, rotten, and contaminated. This revelation shocked the public which later led to the creation of the federal laws on food and safety. Sinclair strongly shows the failure of capitalism in the meatpacking industry which he viewed as inhuman, destructive, unjust, brutal, and violent. (Middlebury) Sinclair was an American writer born in Baltimore. He was struggling to live a basic life, and he started reading about socialism. He believed that America would vote for peaceful negations , So the government will take ownership of its business. He then joined the socialist party in 1903, He began to write for the company "Appeal To Reason" which was a socialist magazine. The meat packing company workers went on strikes, the strikes broke quickly because the company replaced the workers. This, kept the line running and the other families became Impoverished . Red Meat Research Paper crowleys.butchery.com.au – The Nutritional Values of Red Meat Red meat is full of all sorts of nutrients that are beneficial for the growth and health of the human body. The definition of this meat at least in Australian terms is the meat that comes from cattle, goat and sheep. It does not include meat from such animals as pigs, kangaroo, chickens, turkey and buffalo. When you purchase red meat, you will notice that it contains lean or muscle tissue along with fat tissue, which can be both throughout the lean tissue as marbling or around the outside of the particular cut of meat. A butcher typically trims off this excess fat to ensure the cut is as lean as possible. Protein Content The protein content of red meat ranges from 20g up to 36g per 100g, depending on whether it is raw or cooked. During the cooking processes, nutrients in this meat become more concentrated, thus, the increase of protein per 100g of cooked red meat. Changing Lives with the Fifth Agrement by Don Miguel Ruiz The Fifth Agreement Published in 2011, The Fifth Agreement is a sequel to The Fourth Agreement, and offers another powerful agreement for changing lives. The authors Don Miguel Ruiz and his son Don Jose Ruiz inspire the readers to see the truth and to alter the message they communicate to themselves and the people around them. According to them, the fifth agreement is the pathway to complete inner peace and self–satisfaction. Whereas the first four agreements are about breaking free from thousands of agreements that create unnecessary suffering, the fifth agreement helps regain the power of authenticity, which is the true character that we are born with. These agreements are 1) be impeccable with your words, 2) don't take anything personally, 3) don't make assumptions, 4) always do your best, and 5) be skeptical, but learn to listen. The authors include stories from the Bible, and make reference to heaven and hell to demonstrate their point. At the beginning of the novel, they talk about the relationship between God and men. In the story, God and Adam are walking around together, when God asks him how he would like to name everything (Ruiz and Ruiz 20). It is in this conversation between God and Adam that the authors explain the meaning of objective and subjective perceptions. God tells Adam that our objective perception is the truth, and it is called science; our interpretation of the truth is subjective, and we call it art (Ruiz and Ruiz 21). The per capita annual pork consumption level in mainland China, which is at 33.8 kilograms, is among the highest in the world; only Hong Kong, the European Union, and Taiwan, countries or regions with relatively higher per capita incomes, are higher. With sustained economic growth in the last decade in the range of 7.11% to 14.24% and with limited land area for feed grain production, China was expected to become a major importer of pork when, with its accession to the World Trade Organization, it would drop its duties on pork from 20% to 12%, and when it would allow foreign participation in pork distribution in the domestic market. But so far China has remained a small net exporter, averaging 40,000 metric tons from 1999 to 2003. Market penetration by foreign suppliers is believed to be modest because a large portion of China's pork supply is still produced by backyard producers, whereby surplus family labor is mostly used, investment in animal housing structure is very limited, and feeding practices utilize table scraps, vegetables, green fodder, and unprocessed grains and oilseeds, keeping production costs low. In the last decade, the share of backyard producers has declined and growth in hog production has come mostly from specialized households with much larger operations compared with backyard producers, with 30 to 500 hogs in annual production.
