A Streetcar Named Desire Dysfunctional Family
The study spotlights on the familial dysfunctionality as presented in the plays of Tennessee
Williams. The families presented in most of his plays are dysfunctional because of multiple
incompatibilities. A family whose interrelationships serve to detract from, rather than promote, the
emotional and physical health and well being of its members. Dysfunctional families are
characterized by following characteristics which are blaming or failure of responsibility, loose or
rigid rules or relationships, and set family rules. Sexual or physical abuse, addiction to alcohol or
drugs, behavior problems, mental diseases, and aggression can all attribute to dysfunctional families,
physical evidence found in The Glass Menagerie, A Cat on Hot Tin Roof and A Street Car Named
Desire. All these families are dysfunctional families, and overpowering coincides with
psychological symptoms and characteristics. Like a physical disease, the mental and emotional
disease shows common symptoms, and with these symptoms psychologists can diagnose and chart
the severity of the disease. The most common symptoms are rigid discussion which may be
confused or chaotic, disagreements that offends the members of family, a disagreeable environment,
tight and unshared emotion, a lack of good humor and the nature to laugh at one's self and disrespect
for privacy. The pursuit for a better world ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Communication Patterns in Dysfunctional Families
Dysfunctional Families and Communication Patterns Overall, the family is a crucial unit for a range
of reasons, one of which is that it teaches children how to socialize and acquaints children with
some form of socialization (Janeja, 2003). Within the family, children generally adopt the
communication styles of the father and mother, and tend to mimic the methods of conflict
resolution. These communication styles and conflict resolution styles generally follow children into
adulthood: "Many people hope that once they leave home, they will leave their family and
childhood problems behind. However, many find that they experience similar problems, as well as
similar feelings and relationship patterns, long after they have left the family environment"¦.In
addition, the families' communication patterns may severely limit the child's expressions of feelings
and needs. Children growing up in such families are likely to develop low self esteem and feel that
their needs are not important or perhaps should not be taken seriously by others" (Illinois.edu).
Dysfunctional families generally prevail with a range of communication patterns, that aside from
being incredibly frustrating, can be destructive on the psyche of the child, something that he or she
will often carry into adulthood. According to the book Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, these
patterns include: a family member making assumptions about actions or expressions, thoughts or
feelings without checking to be certain

Willy Loman's Dysfunctional Family
The Loman's Dysfunctional Family The Loman's are quite the hectic family. The house is constantly
bickering and absolutely full of folk tales. Whether it is small white lies or enormous secretes, the
family does it all. The family tries to get along and show their love for one another but a times it can
be too hard to believe or trust in another person. Throughout the book the family shows numerous
ways of being dysfunctional.
To begin with, the entire Loman family has shown their part of being a dysfunctional family. Both
Happy and Biff are unemployed and live at home with their parents. The two have it put in their
minds that they have had many different wonderful jobs, but in the end they discover that never
actually happened. Willy is constantly yelling at Linda when she shows him nothing ... Show more

Next, the biggest problem in this family would have to be Willy. His own insanity is tearing the
family apart. During the story, "Death of a Salesman", Biff overhears Willy Talking to himself
which causes an enormous fight between his mother Linda, himself, and eventually Willy. Biff is
tired of how mad his father has become and wants a way to get him treatment but Linda believes
there is nothing that can be done. Willy's insanity is the cause of most the uproars in this household.
In conclusion, every family has their own flaws. The Loman family has shown their flaws on several
different accounts throughout the story. Willy's mental illness has not only affected him, but his two
sons and wife as well. He basically is making Biff and Happy believe things that never happened
and causing them, mainly Biff to fight with their parents. Linda is going crazy and is willing to give
up her children because of him. Throughout everything and even Willy's death, the family still loves
each other

Hamlet And Family Dysfunctional In William Shakespeare's...
Hamlet..? We all know, and have heard of the great play, and book of the famous tragedy that was
made by Shakespeare. Some debate to see the story as a good piece of art to something that teaches
and also reveals some traits that people have. When we all think of hamlet I believe we think of a
crazy time were a king was killed for a throne, and it just so happens to be the death of a king who
had an insane family, but there is so much more to it then that. Hamlet is a bunch of things when I
look at it. What I see is a time and place were the actions of people were expressed in a way that the
world is not perfect. We see this royal family with deep family disfunction, distrust and mistrust
within each other, and just straight up corruption. People need to understand that this play holds
deadly truths and lies, but also a handful of passion, sadness, and the need of love. But sometimes
love can come with piece. A powerful word to describe the Hamlet family is very dysfunctional.
Family dysfunction rules out there hope of trusting one another and depending on the family to even
be a family. In the book "Hamlet" as you read through the pages, you will begin to see that. The
whole family will rarely sit with each other and just enjoy the presence of their company without
being suspicious of some accusation that just happens to be brought up, it's as if to call it a big
family dysfunction. Having a family is really big part of growing up and when your father dies, as

Dysfunctional Family: Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo
A dysfunctional family is one that exists in conflict, bad behavior, and child neglect or abuse. The
conflict started when Dee supposedly burned down the house. Another conflict when Dee changed
her name to Wangero Leewanika Kemanjo. The third and final conflict were that Dee wanted quilts
that mama and Big Dee made from some tops her grandma pieced before she died. The author
explores a dysfunctional family by the conflicts in the story.
The conflict started when Dee supposedly burned down the house. Dee hated the house so mama
thought that Dee burned down the house. While the house was burning Dee just stood under the
sweetgum tree and just watched. In my opinion, Dee thought she was too good to live in the house.

Rick and Morty: Functionally Dysfunctional Family can be difficult. It is sometimes hard for
families to get along because we are all different in our own unique way. In fact, Hollywood has
been making TV shows and movies using family dysfunctionality for years (i.e. Modern Family,
almost every Adam Sandler movie, Game of Thrones). Almost all the time, this TV/movie making
strategy works. One show uses this strategy with excellency. In the TV show Rick and Morty, the
characters give a new definition to a dysfunctional family by how they treat each other and how they
handle their relationships. In the television show Rick and Morty, there are five main characters:
Beth, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

each episode leaves him just a little more scarred. Despite this, Morty cares a lot for Rick, and Rick
seems to reciprocate these feelings. Both have gone through much trouble to help the other, and the
two have the closest relationship of any two members of the family" (Uzelac).
To summarize Marina Uzelac's explanation of their personalities, Morty is mostly a 'Type A'
personality, while Rick is a 'Type B'. However, even though they are different in almost every way
and they contrast on everything, they still love each other. While caring for a family is already
difficult, a family becomes almost impossible when marriage gets in the way and starts to crash and
burn, just like Jerry and Beth. The second most dysfunctional relationship in the television show
Rick and Morty is between Jerry and Beth. Jerry and Beth are the parents of Summer Smith and
Morty Smith. In the show, it is obvious that Jerry and Beth are completely wrong for each other. Just
like Rick and Morty, they have completely different personalities. In fact, Jerry

A dysfunctional family is a family in which conflict, misbehaviour, and often child neglect or abuse
on the part of individual parents occur continually and regularly, leading other members to
accommodate such actions. Dysfunctional families in literature are something we find hard to resit
for numerous reasons. One reason being that reading about negative family dynamics is often more
interesting and make a novel harder to put down than reading about families that go on to lead
perfectly normal and happy lives. This being something that Leo Tolstoy touched upon when he
opened Anna Karenina with "All happy families are like one another; each unhappy family is

it appeared to have seriously affected and damaged him. His fathers' unpredictable behaviour, anger

Growing Up In a Dysfunctional Family
When some people look back on their childhood they see happy times full of family memories,
traditions, love, and encouragement. When I look back on my childhood I remember drug abuse,
visiting my step father in jail, going without utilities, and playing the role of a mother at the age of
eight. I knew I was different from other children. I knew that my parents depended on me to play the
role of an adult. They depended on me to get up every morning and get my brother and sister on the
school bus. I knew they depended on me to go straight home from school every day so I could
babysit. I would wake my mom ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Since the family's survival is dependent on the enabler, they may pay the cost of stress–related
illnesses, never having his or her own needs met, and be a sufferer for the cause of the family.
Ironically, because the enabler permits the dependent's behavior, they are also preventing the
corrective experience that crisis brings, which may be the only thing that stops the dependents
downward spiral. The hero is usually the oldest child. They are also named as "the good child" or
"the caretaker". The hero takes on the role of a parent and feels responsible for the emotional health
of the family. The hero is characteristically an over–achiever and over–responsible. The family
looks at the hero's as a source of humility and honor, and it makes the family feel as if they are
doing well. The hero may do well in school and be good at sports and obtain good employment
while inside the hero suffers from feelings of insufficiency, failure, or guiltiness. These feelings
derive from thoughts that no matter how well the hero does, it will not heal the wounds of their
family. The hero's obsessive drive to accomplish something may lead to stress–related illness as well
as compulsive over working. Since the hero tries so hard to do well, he or she often obtains a great
deal of positive attention. However, inwardly, the hero feels empty and unable to express their true
feelings. The second

Dysfunctional Family Research Paper
Working as an LDS counselor in Plano, TX, I've heard patients use the term, "dysfunctional family,"
many times to describe either their adult homelife or their childhood homelife. Often they use the
term jokingly or justify the behavior or personality they're describing by saying that every family is
somehow dysfunctional. While every family operates in its own unique way, not every family is
dysfunctional. True family dysfunction damages every individual in a family and creates
shockwaves of psychological and emotional turmoil that can last for generations.

Dysfunctional Families in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, by Tennessee Williams
Dysfunction and volatility is common amongst families. These families dislike their kin and often
resent them. In the play, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, by Tennessee Williams, the Politt family does not
function as a normal family. Brick, Maggie, and Big Daddy are three members of the family that
have the most problems that affect the whole family.
Brick, Maggie's alcoholic husband, is an uncaring man who has no good feelings toward his wife.

they are, Maggie says, "why did y'give dawgs names to all your kiddies... sounds like four dogs and

insecure about having children, so she mocks Mae and her offspring to reassure herself and make
her self feel better. Margaret has a dreadful relationship with Brick and also with Mae and her kids.
Big Daddy, an old man with cancer, plays favorites with members of his family and dislikes his
wife. For example, when Big Daddy is talking with Brick, and finds Mae at the door, Big Daddy

Dysfunctional Family Systems and Disordered Self-Image
Dysfunctional Family Systems and Disordered Self–Image Abstract: Disordered self–image, sense
of self, and self–esteem are affected negatively by dysfunctional family systems. Maladaptive
perfectionism affects mood, causes decreased self–esteem, and contributes to the development of
avoidance tactics. Adolescent dysregulations includes disordered eating behaviors and/or eating
disorders, anxiety, depression, body dissatisfaction, and extreme attempts at weight control; all of
which can be caused by child sexual abuse, maladaptive perfectionism, parental attachment issues,
and the development of alexithymia. Other dysregulations include faulty coping mechanisms, which
are also affected by anxiety, depression, and neuroticism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Indicators of dysregulation include emotional reactivity, or an excess of emotional lability because
of frequent mood swings; and psychological splitting, or an inability to view others with both their
good and bad aspects. Perfectionism, whether adaptive or maladaptive, is linked to the quality of the
parent–child relationship (Aldea & Rice 2006). Significant maladaptive perfectionism can be seen in
an individual who has suffered child sexual abuse and has developed an eating disorder or displayed
disordered eating behavior. Oftentimes, the individual identifies himself, in various ways, as 'not
good enough,' including his view of his physical self and his view of his emotional self, causing him
to develop disordered eating behaviors or clinical eating disorders. A positive correlation between
child sexual abuse and disordered eating behaviors has been identified, as has a positive correlation
between child sexual abuse and having a diagnosis of a clinical eating disorder. Child sexual abuse
has been associated with the increase in displaying disordered eating behaviors and/or symptoms.
Abuse experiences contribute to a woman's development of bulimia, possibly because the woman is
utilizing bulimia as a coping mechanism and an attempt to manage the emotional fallout from the
abuse. Abuse survivors are

Dysfunctional Families in Revolutionary Road and Anna...
Dysfunction within an individual can be the result of various occurrences, whether it is a traumatic
experience that has stemmed into a life of self–doubt and vulnerability, or it is a series of
unfortunate events that has led the individual to believe that life is simply an ongoing controversy.
However, dysfunction within a family is much more than self–afflicted stress, it is rooted within the
familial bonds that gradually break as a result of conflict, co–dependent adults, perhaps substance
abuse, and oftentimes a struggle of conformity brought on by an external source. In the novels
Revolutionary Road and Anna Karenina, Richard Yates and Leo Tolstoy depict familial dysfunction
that can occur as a result of society's overwhelming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nevertheless, to fundamentally comprehend this gist of this essay, one must primarily understand
the definition of a dysfunctional family to be able to dissect the topic and see how the novels Anna
Karenina and Revolutionary Road personify the description.
Louise Mark, John Olesen, Joanne Fallon explain in A manual for chemical dependency and
psychiatric treatment that, "Most of our rules are learned from our parents, who learned the rules
from their parents etc. This means that dysfunctional families are generational, and if left untreated,
will become more severe in ensuing generations" (Mark, Olesen, Fallon, 67). These scholars explain
that dysfunctional families result from several generations of corrupted laws, thus, one's ancestors
set the standards and following generations have simply carried on the customs. The scholars go on
to compare and contrast several traits that categorize a family as dysfunctional as opposed to
nurturing, and one of the prominent qualities seem to be "everyone must conform to strongest
person's ideas and values" (97). This quality is clearly identifiable in both Yates and Tolstoy's
novels, as the root of the familial

Examples Of Dysfunctional Family In Hamlet
Dysfunctional Families Being Corrupt
Of all the plays that Shakespeare wrote, Hamlet is one of the better known ones today. The play is
about a teenager, by the name of Hamlet, that is on a quest to avenge his father's death. In the
beginning of the play it shows Hamlet's uncle and his mother getting married after his father's death.
Hamlet later finds out that his father's aspiration come back to tells him that he was murdered by his
brother, and tells Hamlet to get revenge on his murderer. Throughout the play, Hamlet acts crazy to
make others believe his father's death made him that way, when really he is just putting off killing
his uncle. At the end of the play, a fight goes down and where everyone ends up being killed by
different types of poison. In the end, Horatio, Hamlet's best friend, is the only one still living
amongst all the main characters. There are many different themes throughout the play that can relate
to today's society; the two that stand out are morality and dysfunctional families. ... Show more

This theme still relates to our society today, because almost all families are dysfunctional, just not to
the extent of Hamlet's. In the play, it shows right away that his family is dysfunctional, because it
starts out with the king's brother marrying his wife just less than two months after he passed away.
In today's society that would be heavily frowned upon. Also in today's society, most families would
not be watched as heavily as Hamlet's family was, even though most people were okay with the
marriage. Hamlet's family is always in an argument and can never agree on a solution, which is very

The Causes And Negative Effects Of Dysfunctional Family
"See, I think there are roads that lead us to each other. But in my family, there were no roads – just
underground tunnels. I think we all got lost in those underground tunnels. No, not lost. We just lived
there." by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. Dysfunctional families can lead to a few bad things in life,
especially towards their own children. When having a bad effect towards each other, they usually get
lost in what the problem is and forget about how to overcome them. The negative effects can also
change an individual's identity as well. Family dysfunction can have a negative effect on an
individual's identity in several ways.
One way family dysfunction affects an individual's identity is by lack of affection. First, when a
child does not get the affection needed from their family. For example, when a child starts to grow
up. They are needing affection whenever they want whether it being alone, tired, happy, or to feel
encouraged. It makes themselves feel good when getting enough affection from their parents. Yet
without it, it would make the child feel depressed and alone. In the "Erickson's Stages of
Psychosocial Development" by Kendra Cherry, Erickson talks about what would happen when a
child does not get affection (stage 1). The child would start to isolate themselves from others around
them when growing up and feel self conscious. Secondly, when the child grows up and does not get
enough affection, the child grows up and will isolate themselves from society. For example,

Dysfunctional Family In The Renaissance Era
Drama is in the top 5 category of popular genres in the world. Present in those dramas often times
are dysfunctional families that we can't help but binge watch on TV, like Empire, Family Guy, and
The Game of Thrones. None of these families are perfect; they double cross each other, commit
adultery , do anything for power and even try to kill each other, but that's what makes their shows so
entertaining. Just when you think your family is full of a bunch of psycho nut jobs, you are able to
take comfort in watching families that have it even worse than you do. It is not that we are just
cynical human beings but we just like to be entertained. This is no different than the revenge tragedy
plays of the Renaissance era that have a huge focus on dysfunctional families. If you take out the
titles: Duke, Duchess, prince, servant etc. modern audiences can find these plays compelling and a
lot like movies of today in regards to jealousy, rebellion and attention grabbing scenes.
In The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd, there's a family consisting of a controlling father (The
Duke), disobedient daughter (Bel–imperia) and her meddling, overprotective brother (Lorenzo).
Bel–imperia is commanded by her father to marry a prince named Balthazar that is wealthy and has

Dysfunctional Family In The Virgin Suicides
Dysfunctional is defined as "abnormal or unhealthy interpersonal behavior or interaction within a
group" ("Dysfunction"). The effects of the dysfunctional families can greatly impact the children in
the family. How the children display the effects can vary. In "The Virgin Suicides" by Jeffrey
Eugenides, the Lisbon sisters are forced to obey their strict Catholic parents, which eventually leads
them to take their own lives. In "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" directed by Stephen Chbosky,
Charlie believes he is the reason why his aunt died, which causes him to isolate himself from others,
so he won't hurt anyone else. "The Virgin Suicides" and "Perks of Being a Wallflower" the main
characters isolate themselves as a result of their dysfunctional families, which can be seen through
the character's dialogue and symbolism.
Through dialogue said by Therese, the isolation of the Lisbon girls can be seen as a result of the
suicide of their family member. Therese and Kevin had gone outside for some fresh air during the

A dysfunctional family is a group of people usually related by some means, not always necessarily

members. To explain this idea better we will see the definition of family, the differences between a
healthy and a dysfunctional family; their characteristics and behavioral patterns. Some examples
will help us examine this issue better, taking us to discuss the different factors that contribute to the
formation of such families, along with its consequences in today's society.

A family dysfunction can be any condition that impedes its proper rhythm. Most families have some
periods of time when functioning is impaired by stressful circumstances, for instance: death, illness,
unemployment, finances, stress, work, school, etc. Moreover, healthy families tend to return to
normal functioning after the crisis passes. In dysfunctional families, however, problems tend to be
chronic.
A healthy family is not perfect; there may be misunderstandings, tensions, conflicts, yelling, hurt
and anger, but not always. Emotional expression is allowed; and it's acceptable to get mad
sometimes, as long as it's not all the time. The Holy Bible teaches on Ephesians 4–23 "Be ye angry
and sin not, let not the sun go down upon your wrath". Also, in a healthy family, rules tend to be
explicit and are consistent, but with some flexibility to adapt to individual needs and particular
situations. Ephesians 6–4 exemplifies this idea with the following verse: "And you, fathers, do not
provoke your children to wrath".
Children are treated with respect, and do not fear emotional, verbal, physical, or sexual abuse. On
the contrary, they feel safe, as they know that their parents are there to protect them and to look after
their well–being. These children are given responsibilities appropriate to their age and are not

Dysfunctional Families : A Dysfunctional Family
It is difficult to come by healthy families in modern society, for many families experience many
hardships and tribulations all throughout life. The dysfunctional family is apparent in many
households in today's society, for a dysfunctional family is described as any condition in which
healthy family functioning is interfered (Santa Clara University). There are many reasons for why
families become dysfunctional in America today, and statistics are staggering, showing that about
half of all marriages end in divorce. Dysfunctional families can be caused either by parents who are
insufficient in their efforts to raise their children, or it can be the children who misbehave and cause
ruckus in the household. While healthy families tend to return to their normal lives after a time of
intense stress or crisis, dysfunctional families experience chronic or longing problems that never
seem to fade (Santa Clara University). Dysfunctional families are characterized by specific causes
and factors that lead them to become unhealthy and dysfunctional, and these causes vary from
alcoholic and abusive parents to parents who lack parenting skills. A catastrophic event, such as a
death in the family or a parent having an affair, can cause families to also fall victim to dysfunction
in the household. Cures to help fix the unhealthy functioning of many families exist in society, and
they can be used to help repair lost relationships with parents and children. The dysfunctional family

wikipedia ) Moreover, the Mental Health Academy of Australia shows that among children aged 0–
17 years, 20% of them were living in sole parent families and 8% of them were living in either step
or blended families. Furthermore, dysfunctional families have significant effects on family
members; for instance, children from dysfunctional families are more likely to have depression,
anxiety and low self esteem. They also develop life ling problems with their interpersonal

The Glass Menagerie Dysfunctional Family Essay
The Dysfunctional Family
In the play "The Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee Williams, Tom had a plan all of his own to quite
his job, and go off and join the merchant marines. Tom hated his job and he felt the pressure of
keeping up the family finances, as well as keeping up his sister and mother. Amanda, Toms mother
appeared to want to control the family, and often told stories of her past growing up in the
Mississippi delta. She claimed she had numerous gentlemen suitors, for example Amanda: "One
Sunday afternoon in Blue Mountain–your mother received–seventeen`! –Gentlemen callers!"(1384
s.c 1) His sister Laura the very opposite of his mother, very shy and reserved, and suffered from
anxiety anytime she was around people and even out of her own home. She got to the point she
dropped out of business school and lingered around the city by day. Laura: "I couldn't go back there.

Amanda would find the smallest things to argue with him about. Whether it was he needed to comb
his hair, or why he went to the movies so much. It seemed that Tom appeared to not like living in his
home. He would leave every night, and say he was going to go out to the movie. Tom said that this
gave him adventure, because he didn't get to have adventure at the shoe wear house were he worked.
He had to work at the shoe warehouse to support his mother, and his sister Laura. A person could
easily tell by reading this play that Tom did not enjoy working at this warehouse. He always seemed
stressed, and unhappy with life in general. Tom had his own dream of joining the merchant marines,
and didn't plan on telling anyone about it. Tom had the responsibility of taking care of this mother
and his sister financially. Amanda soon figured out Toms plan when she found a letter from the
merchant marines, and confronted Tom with it. She told him with anger to do what he wanted, but
not until his sister Laura was taken care

Essay on Dysfunctional Families and Drugs
Why do teens use drugs? Many reasons contribute to adolescent drug use. It may be stress, peer
pressure, or even the difficulty coping with the ills of school life. Teens use drugs because they have
no true guidance. The absence, of certain vital components such as, someone to talk to, morals,
values, or even responsibility forces teens to use drugs. One major contributing cause of adolescent
drug use and abuse is a dysfunctional family, a family that does not provide all of the above.
The lack of a strong family structure can leave a teen feeling lonely and emotionally confused. It is
not only vital it is necessary for a teen to have both parents present in their life. According to Joseph
A. Califano Jr. "Few parents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Research by the University of Minnesota and the University of North Carolina found parents'
present in the home at key times, was associated with a reduced incidence of drug use, sex, and
violence and emotional distress among teens"(Shellenbarger).
When most teenagers were asked about their first encounter with drugs it was in fact family that first
introduced drugs "not shadowy drug dealers" (Baldauf). Also the lack of stern morals and values set
forth at a young age, present to society teens that are not equipped to make thorough decisions. Lara
Alvord confesses that at age twelve she tried marijuana for the first time with consent of her mother,
who was an occasional drug user. Trying marijuana led Lara to use other drugs, and by the time she
was an adult she was addicted to cocaine. Lara admits that had her mother "put her foot down and
said I could not have done drugs, I wouldn't have felt comfortable enough to try them in the first
place"(Baldauf).
In an event that both parents are avidly involved in the lives of their children, that child would be
less likely to get involved with drugs or other unacceptable activities. Drug addiction stems from a
teens need for something that they are not receiving in the home. The home is the basis at which
teens receive emotional and physical nourishment. According to Sue Shellenbarger, it is important to
call "a halt to society's frenetic pace long enough for

King Lear Dysfunctional Family
Characteristics of dysfunctional families are found throughout the play "King Lear" by William
Shakespeare. Dysfunctional means not operating properly, so a dysfunctional family is a family that
does not operate properly. One characteristic of a dysfunctional family is the display of not
respecting others. Another characteristic is a lack of trust. Greed also tarnishes families. These
characteristics are seen in "King Lear." Not showing respect for others is a characteristic of a
dysfunctional family. When family members do not trust each other it can be humiliating to those
involved. This can ruin relationships. When Cordelia publicly refuses to go along with Lear's game,
Lear sees it as a lack of respect. In his moment of fury, Lear disowns Cordelia splitting apart the
family. Another time this is seen is when Lear comes to stay with Goneril. "Here do you keep a
hundred knights and squires, men so disordered, so debauched and bold, that is our court, infected
with their manners, shoes like a riotous inn," (Shakespeare p.107). Goneril takes this offensively and
uses it in her plan to dispose of Lear. Seeing it as disrespectful she throws him out of her house

Essay on Dysfunctional Families in Song of Solomon
Dysfunctional Families in Song of Solomon
The African American families in Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon present abnormality and
dysfunction. Normalcy, seen in common nuclear families, is absent. The protagonist, Milkman, is
shaped by his dysfunctional relationships with parental figures.
The abnormality of the mother and child relationship is apparent in Song of Solomon. The mother
figure seems to have misguided hopes. Toni Morrison, presents an image of an unnatural, extended
time of maternal bonding. The character, Ruth, breastfeeds her son, Milkman, until he is four or five
years of age. Ruth breastfeeds Milkman for this unnaturally lengthy amount of time because it
makes her feel like her son is a part of her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Song of Solomon, the father provokes fear in his children. Oddly, Milkman's sisters seem to look
forward to the anger and tension of their father. Morrison writes, "The way he mangled their grace,
wit, and self–esteem was the single excitement of their days...Without the tension and drama he(the
father) ignited, they might not have known what to do with themselves" ,and the sisters "waited
eagerly for any hint of him.(11)" Rather than expressing love for their children verbally, the father
figures often show their love through actions and through providing for the children. We see an
example of this in the poem "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden. The father in this poem
wakes especially early in the morning to chop wood, start a fire, and make the house warm for his
son. Despite the father's loving actions, the son speaks indifferently to him and never thanks him.
In Morrison's novel, the father sees love as ownership. After Milkman begins working for him, he is
"delighted. His son belongs to him now and not to Ruth(63)." In addition, the father wishes for his
son to focus less on education and more on the "American Dream". He tells Milkman, "Let me tell
you right now the one important thing you'll ever need to know: own things. And let the things you
own own other things. Then you'll own yourself and other people too(55)." Milkman's father did not
have any respect for college graduates. He believed that "college was time spent

Dysfunctional Families: How Children Are Affected Essay
Abstract When a family decides to have a child, everything changes. That child becomes a number
one priority. In order for a child to lead a healthy, functional life, a family needs to be strong and
functional. When a family becomes dysfunctional, the most effected is the children. The children
forget their children and act out which makes them difficult to live with. If a dysfunctional family,
let alone the children, knew that therapy and help was available to them, more families would
become healthy. In this paper, I will prove that children in dysfunctional families can self–diagnose
and be encouraged to seek help and treatment so that their future can be affected by their own
mistakes and not the mistakes of their families. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The children assume roles within the family to make up for the deficiencies of parenting. Sharon
Wegscheider referred in her book to these roles within the family as the "Hero," the "Scapegoat," the
"Lost Child," and the "Mascot."
The child in the dysfunctional family that becomes like another parent is the eldest child. This child
is referred to as the Hero Child or the Responsible Child. This child takes over the parent role at a
very young age, becoming very responsible and self–sufficient. They give the family self–worth
because the child looks good on the outside. This child becomes the good student, the sports star, the
prom queen. The parents look to this child to prove that they are good parents and good people. As
an adult, the Family Hero is rigid, controlling, and extremely judgmental of others and secretly of
themselves. They achieve "success" on the outside and get lots of positive attention, but are cut off
from their inner emotional life. They are compulsive and driven as adults because deep inside they
feel inadequate and insecure. The family hero is often the child in the family who as an adult has the
hardest time even admitting that there is anything within them that needs to be healed (Burney
2008.)
The second role that a child can be is the Scapegoat role. This is the

The Impact Of Jung's Dysfunctional Family Life
Jungian theory has made a great impact on psychology. Jung's dysfunctional family life shaped how
he viewed the world. Specifically, his relationship with his mother. In the research that I have done
in almost all accounts of Jung's life, there is a large emphasis on Jung's relationship with his mother.
I think that one of the reasons why he states to have such a distrust of women is because his mother
was not entirely there for him. When she was present, she treated Jung, who was about three years
old as an adult. This may also have affected the way that Jung developed as a person. I think that his
mother played an important role in his theories and some of the problems he had as an adult. His
need for individuation might have in large part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His intense curiosity of God and the church was also reflected in some of his archetypes. In
particular, in the persona and the shadow. From my readings and research, it seems to me like the
shadow is very representative of the devil or sin (Neher, 1996). With such an evolvement of theory
and therapy, I do not that think that archetypes could be easily understood and applied today. Jung,
much like Freud put a lot of emphasis on the unconscious. His theory of the collective unconscious
which is a way in which all humankind is connected seems a bit mystical and outdated. During
Jung's time, this theory like many of his other approaches was relevant and applied easily into
therapy. In today's day, I do not think that Jung's theories could be functional since there was a move
away from mysticism and religion. I had a hard time finding research that validated his theories and
showed how they were useful in psychotherapy, especially in the United States. A lot of the research
conducted was in Europe. I think this is one of the major weaknesses that I noticed in his theory.
There is not a lot of empirical research, at least conducted in the United States that suggests that his
theories have been effective in

Kite Runner Dysfunctional Family Relationships
Dysfunctional family relationships can be observed in the relationship between mothers and
daughters, fathers and sons, and just about every correspondence between family members. Often,
this type of relationship results from a weak or poor connection within a family. Dysfunctional
family relationships can become negative in the sense that they generate impractical feelings toward
one another, and create secrets and lies. Critically acclaimed author, Khaled Hosseini explores the
theme of dysfunctional family relationships in his novel, The Kite Runner, through the father–to–
son relationship of the protagonist, Amir, and his father who lacks interest and separates himself
from his son. Hosseini suggests that through the poor relationship between Baba and Amir,
dysfunctional family relationships can lead to unrealistic expectations and deception. ... Show more

Structural Model For A Dysfunctional Family
Professor Antel/Class,
The structural model looks at a family interactional patterns and relationships through the family
structure. Within the family structure, each family member plays an important part that represent
"power, patterns, and organization in the family" (Lee, 2011, p. 230). Each family member should
understand his or her boundaries within the family and between individuals. A structural therapist
finds this to be important because individual functioning is centered through rules that shape the
structure in the family (Lee, 2011). The structural therapist believes that in order for a dysfunctional
family to make a change, there must be organization within the family itself. It reasoned that "when
the family structure is transformed,

the play, The Death of a Salesman, written by Arthur Miller, the Loman's go through very difficult

Dysfunctional Family In Fences
The way a family is viewed in today's time is the one of the american dream, with the white picket
fence and smiling faces from both the children and the parents. Unfortunately, the curtain is pulled
back to see the father three doors down with the single mother, the son is leaping out the window
every night and the mother is taking too many supplements for depression while the little girl sleeps
alone in the dark, crying. Not every family can be portrayed as what they want to be. To some
extent, every family has their own problems that they must deal with everyday. No matter how much
white paint one coats over their fence, someone stopping by will see the cracks and uneven brush
strokes on the structure that is supposedly supposed to protect them all. These types of families have
children that grow up with their parents always on edge, snapping at random moments and start to
believe that this is how a family is supposed to act. Then, when they leave their unstable
environment, they have their own problems with the new family they created, which are inherited
from the one they thought they left behind. The attachment they once had to their former life was
left in loose ends and unneeded ties with no scissors available to cut them with. Dysfunctional
families often have these types of dynamics and are viewed not only from personal experiences but
now also are transferred into works of literature to develop the misgivings of such a family. In
Fences, August Wilson creates a

Dysfunctional Family
A dysfunctional family is a family, in which conflict, misbehavior and even abuse on the part of
individual members of the family occur continually, leading other members to accommodate such
actions. Dysfunctional families are most often a result of the alcoholism, substance abuse, or other
addictions of parents, parents' untreated mental illnesses/defects or personality disorders, or the
parents emulating their own dysfunctional parents and dysfunctional family experiences.

Criticism can be aimed at the child's looks, intelligence, capabilities, or basic value. Some verbal
abusers are very direct, while others use subtle put–downs disguised as humor. Both types are just as
damaging.
Definitions of physical abuse vary widely. Many parents, at one time or another, have felt the urge to
strike their child. With physically abusive parents, however, the urge is frequent and little effort is
made to control this impulse. The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act defines
physical abuse as "the infliction of physical injuries such as bruises, burns, welts, cuts, bone or skull
fractures; these are caused by kicking, punching, biting, beating, knifing, strapping, paddling, etc."
Striking a child has much to do with meeting the parent's emotional needs and nothing to do with
concern for the child; parents often erroneously justify the abuse as "discipline" intended to "help"
the child. Physically abusive parents can create an environment of terror for the child, particularly
since violence is often random and unpredictable. Abused children often feel anger. Children of
abusive parents have tremendous difficulties developing feelings of trust and safety even in their
adult lives.
While parents may justify or rationalize verbal or physical abuse as discipline aimed at somehow
helping the child, there is no rationalization for sexual abuse. Sexual abuse is the most blatant
example of an adult abusing a child purely for that

My Family : Growing Up In A Dysfunctional Family
Through my middle school and high school career, I would've never thought growing up in a
dysfunctional family would build my character. My family was separated like two couples that
divorced. Although I didn't like some of my sisters, I showed favoritism to one who had the same
interest as me. My mom worked at a retirement home where she took care of elderly people. Her
taking care of us was already stressful since she claimed we put her through hell in her late 30's. As
for my dad, he didn't have much luck landing a job and remained a stay at home dad. The one thing
that I appreciated the most was being around my other 5 siblings. Ronny, 27, and Louis, 24, are my
older brothers. Ashley, 23, and Iesha, 22, are my oldest sisters. However, Arnae is 17 and she is the
baby girl of the family. Most of us got along when we decided to be in one another presence. For
example, my sisters Ashley and Iesha hung out with one another because they found interest in
gossiping, fashion, and makeup. My two eldest brothers loved watching the NBA together and
playing video games against each other. My youngest sister and I were left together despite our
times of arguing over food. I was the only talented person in our family with skills in Art, dancing,
and basketball.
When I was in the 6th grade, my siblings and I would eat by ourselves in our own rooms. There was

they don't live with me. I was basically an only child for 11 years. When my (half) brother was born

Dysfunctional Families
Dysfunctional families breed dysfunctional children. This can stay with them all the way up to their
marriage and is most likely to occur in their relationship. According to research done by the
University of Chicago ( published in the journal of Abnormal Child Psychology) social skills can be
interpreted as everything from the basic "please and thank you" to speaking in large crowds. How
parents deal with that is just as important for the child as the violence they are being exposed to. In
the end, they both affect the child one way or another. Part of the Brain The brain is the central
control system for the entire body. It is made up of many parts, but there is a very important part of
the brain, in this case would be the "Visual Cortex"– the part of the brain responsible for processing
visual information. This part of the brain is what gets fired up when watching a horror movie. (US
National Library of Medicine) gives me information on how the visual cortex works in the midst of

Great Expectations Dysfunctional Families Essay
Dysfunctional families are a relatively common occurrence, and they often are consumed by their
dysfunction. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, there are many dysfunctional families, and
they all are the result of various problems. The family unit of Joe, Mrs. Joe and Pip, a lower class
family faces very different problems from the family that is Ms. Havisham and Estella, a middle or
upper class family. The commonality that dysfunctional families in Great Expectations share is the
profound effect that dysfunction has on other families.

Family Traditions For Dysfunctional Families Essay
Family Traditions for Dysfunctional Families In todays world there are at least 1 Billion families.
Which means there has to be at least 1 Billion family traditions. Family traditions can be many
different things but my family traditions all can relate back to dysfunctionalism. There are more
dysfunctional families in the united states than normal families. More than 50% of happiness comes
from dysfunctional families and still, the celebrate Birthdays, Religious Holidays and Casual
Holidays . Can you imagine Holidays being the root of our happiness. What is a dysfunctional

and unnatural" (Artical 1). Dysfunctional families can range from many different things such as
failing to be a provider for their child or lack of emotional, phychological and/or physical needs.
There are also different types of dysfunctional families. Dysfunctional families can be because of
addiction, alcohol, no emotional support, religious fundamentalism and rigidly dogmatic beliefs,
overly possessive parents and sexaul abuse.
First on the list is Birthday. Every year this day is celebrated with cake and gifts. Sure, this seems
casual but something makes it different. Once the kid reaches 18 whom ever brough them cakes, the
18 year old has to buy them for that person for 18 years. Crazy right? Well that is just the way things

people hope that once they leave home, they will leave their family and their childhood problems

While many people believe that most families in America are well functioning families, the novel
Montana 1948 shows a good portrayal of a dysfunctional family because they did not have hope for
the future and without hope dysfunction will spread through generations of families like a disease,
destroying many lives along the way.
Some children in today's society aren't all taught the do's and don'ts of what is publicly accepted.
From different environments children are raised in, they think that whatever they are taught is the
right thing. They have no prior knowledge of what is normal. As Marie Hartwell–Walker states in
"Why Dysfunctional Families Stay That Way" she shares that,
"Because they don't know what normal is, a dysfunctional family is participating in the pretense that
they are a normal family bringing up children within the range of what is normal. Because we live in
a culture that respects family privacy, someone usually has to get badly hurt before the illusion is
questioned by anyone outside its ranks," (Hartwell –Walker).
The main reason of why children have a hard time blending into society is because they are
unwilling to change their ideas and values for the fact that they were taught differently. And for the
fact that they were taught a different way they get offended when someone tries to change them or
criticize them on their upbringing and lifestyle. These people try to teach them these things because
they weren't

A Streetcar Named Desire Dysfunctional Family

  • 1. A Streetcar Named Desire Dysfunctional Family The study spotlights on the familial dysfunctionality as presented in the plays of Tennessee Williams. The families presented in most of his plays are dysfunctional because of multiple incompatibilities. A family whose interrelationships serve to detract from, rather than promote, the emotional and physical health and well being of its members. Dysfunctional families are characterized by following characteristics which are blaming or failure of responsibility, loose or rigid rules or relationships, and set family rules. Sexual or physical abuse, addiction to alcohol or drugs, behavior problems, mental diseases, and aggression can all attribute to dysfunctional families, physical evidence found in The Glass Menagerie, A Cat on Hot Tin Roof and A Street Car Named Desire. All these families are dysfunctional families, and overpowering coincides with psychological symptoms and characteristics. Like a physical disease, the mental and emotional disease shows common symptoms, and with these symptoms psychologists can diagnose and chart the severity of the disease. The most common symptoms are rigid discussion which may be confused or chaotic, disagreements that offends the members of family, a disagreeable environment, tight and unshared emotion, a lack of good humor and the nature to laugh at one's self and disrespect for privacy. • 3. Communication Patterns in Dysfunctional Families Dysfunctional Families and Communication Patterns Overall, the family is a crucial unit for a range of reasons, one of which is that it teaches children how to socialize and acquaints children with some form of socialization (Janeja, 2003). Within the family, children generally adopt the communication styles of the father and mother, and tend to mimic the methods of conflict resolution. These communication styles and conflict resolution styles generally follow children into adulthood: "Many people hope that once they leave home, they will leave their family and childhood problems behind. However, many find that they experience similar problems, as well as similar feelings and relationship patterns, long after they have left the family environment"¦.In addition, the families' communication patterns may severely limit the child's expressions of feelings and needs. Children growing up in such families are likely to develop low self esteem and feel that their needs are not important or perhaps should not be taken seriously by others" (Illinois.edu). Dysfunctional families generally prevail with a range of communication patterns, that aside from being incredibly frustrating, can be destructive on the psyche of the child, something that he or she will often carry into adulthood. According to the book Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing, these patterns include: a family member making assumptions about actions or expressions, thoughts or feelings without checking to be certain ... Whether it is small white lies or enormous secretes, the family does it all. The family tries to get along and show their love for one another but a times it can be too hard to believe or trust in another person. Throughout the book the family shows numerous ways of being dysfunctional. To begin with, the entire Loman family has shown their part of being a dysfunctional family. The two have it put in their minds that they have had many different wonderful jobs, but in the end they discover that never actually happened. Willy is constantly yelling at Linda when she shows him nothing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Next, the biggest problem in this family would have to be Willy. His own insanity is tearing the family apart. During the story, "Death of a Salesman", Biff overhears Willy Talking to himself which causes an enormous fight between his mother Linda, himself, and eventually Willy. Biff is tired of how mad his father has become and wants a way to get him treatment but Linda believes there is nothing that can be done. Willy's insanity is the cause of most the uproars in this household. In conclusion, every family has their own flaws. The Loman family has shown their flaws on several different accounts throughout the story. Willy's mental illness has not only affected him, but his two sons and wife as well. He basically is making Biff and Happy believe things that never happened and causing them, mainly Biff to fight with their parents. Linda is going crazy and is willing to give up her children because of him. Throughout everything and even Willy's death, the family still loves each other ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Hamlet And Family Dysfunctional In William Shakespeare's... Hamlet..? We all know, and have heard of the great play, and book of the famous tragedy that was made by Shakespeare. Some debate to see the story as a good piece of art to something that teaches and also reveals some traits that people have. When we all think of hamlet I believe we think of a crazy time were a king was killed for a throne, and it just so happens to be the death of a king who had an insane family, but there is so much more to it then that. Hamlet is a bunch of things when I look at it. What I see is a time and place were the actions of people were expressed in a way that the world is not perfect. We see this royal family with deep family disfunction, distrust and mistrust within each other, and just straight up corruption. People need to understand that this play holds deadly truths and lies, but also a handful of passion, sadness, and the need of love. But sometimes love can come with piece. A powerful word to describe the Hamlet family is very dysfunctional. Family dysfunction rules out there hope of trusting one another and depending on the family to even be a family. In the book "Hamlet" as you read through the pages, you will begin to see that. The whole family will rarely sit with each other and just enjoy the presence of their company without being suspicious of some accusation that just happens to be brought up, it's as if to call it a big family dysfunction. It is sometimes hard for families to get along because we are all different in our own unique way. In fact, Hollywood has been making TV shows and movies using family dysfunctionality for years (i.e. Modern Family, almost every Adam Sandler movie, Game of Thrones). Almost all the time, this TV/movie making strategy works. One show uses this strategy with excellency. In the TV show Rick and Morty, the characters give a new definition to a dysfunctional family by how they treat each other and how they handle their relationships. In the television show Rick and Morty, there are five main characters: Beth, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Well, that's what he tells himself. Morty, rather than being enchanted by new worlds and having fun, each episode leaves him just a little more scarred. Despite this, Morty cares a lot for Rick, and Rick seems to reciprocate these feelings. Both have gone through much trouble to help the other, and the two have the closest relationship of any two members of the family" (Uzelac). To summarize Marina Uzelac's explanation of their personalities, Morty is mostly a 'Type A' personality, while Rick is a 'Type B'. However, even though they are different in almost every way and they contrast on everything, they still love each other. While caring for a family is already difficult, a family becomes almost impossible when marriage gets in the way and starts to crash and burn, just like Jerry and Beth. The second most dysfunctional relationship in the television show Rick and Morty is between Jerry and Beth. Jerry and Beth are the parents of Summer Smith and Morty Smith. In the show, it is obvious that Jerry and Beth are completely wrong for each other. Just like Rick and Morty, they have completely different personalities. In fact, Jerry ... Examples Of Dysfunctional Family In Anna Karenina A dysfunctional family is a family in which conflict, misbehaviour, and often child neglect or abuse on the part of individual parents occur continually and regularly, leading other members to accommodate such actions. Dysfunctional families in literature are something we find hard to resit for numerous reasons. One reason being that reading about negative family dynamics is often more interesting and make a novel harder to put down than reading about families that go on to lead perfectly normal and happy lives. This being something that Leo Tolstoy touched upon when he opened Anna Karenina with "All happy families are like one another; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." According to Margo (Nicks sister) he had always been the favourite child, he was the one who was planned, he was the firstborn and not the surprise twin who had "sneaked into this world by clamping onto (Nicks) ankle, an unwanted stranger. "He is a mama's boy whose mama is dead." While Nick was close with his mother his relationship with his father wasn't the best in that it appeared to have seriously affected and damaged him. His fathers' unpredictable behaviour, anger issues and pressure of his expectations of Nick turned him into a chronic people pleaser. While in the novel Nick is no longer a child, his childhood, in particular his father's role in it still has the capacity to majorly mess up his life. When I look back on my childhood I remember drug abuse, visiting my step father in jail, going without utilities, and playing the role of a mother at the age of eight. I knew I was different from other children. I knew that my parents depended on me to play the role of an adult. Often they use the term jokingly or justify the behavior or personality they're describing by saying that every family is somehow dysfunctional. While every family operates in its own unique way, not every family is dysfunctional. True family dysfunction damages every individual in a family and creates shockwaves of psychological and emotional turmoil that can last for generations. Maggie has a grudge Mae because she has many children with Gooper. Maggie feels insecure about having children, so she mocks Mae and her offspring to reassure herself and make her self feel better. Margaret has a dreadful relationship with Brick and also with Mae and her kids. Big Daddy, an old man with cancer, plays favorites with members of his family and dislikes his wife. For example, when Big Daddy is talking with Brick, and finds Mae at the door, Big Daddy says, "I don't want you, I want some privacy here... with my son Brick"(62). Big Daddy only likes Brick and shows disgust for everyone else. Even though they are family, Big Daddy acts like they are the scum of the earth. Furthermore, when Big Mama tries to walk into Big Daddy and Brick's talk, Big Daddy doesn't let her in and says that "all [he] ask[s] of that woman is that she leave [him] alone [and that] she makes [him] sick"(71–2). Dysfunctional Family Systems and Disordered Self-Image Dysfunctional Family Systems and Disordered Self–Image Abstract: Disordered self–image, sense of self, and self–esteem are affected negatively by dysfunctional family systems. Maladaptive perfectionism affects mood, causes decreased self–esteem, and contributes to the development of avoidance tactics. Adolescent dysregulations includes disordered eating behaviors and/or eating disorders, anxiety, depression, body dissatisfaction, and extreme attempts at weight control; all of which can be caused by child sexual abuse, maladaptive perfectionism, parental attachment issues, and the development of alexithymia. Other dysregulations include faulty coping mechanisms, which are also affected by anxiety, depression, and neuroticism. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Indicators of dysregulation include emotional reactivity, or an excess of emotional lability because of frequent mood swings; and psychological splitting, or an inability to view others with both their good and bad aspects. Perfectionism, whether adaptive or maladaptive, is linked to the quality of the parent–child relationship (Aldea & Rice 2006). Significant maladaptive perfectionism can be seen in an individual who has suffered child sexual abuse and has developed an eating disorder or displayed disordered eating behavior. Oftentimes, the individual identifies himself, in various ways, as 'not good enough,' including his view of his physical self and his view of his emotional self, causing him to develop disordered eating behaviors or clinical eating disorders. A positive correlation between child sexual abuse and disordered eating behaviors has been identified, as has a positive correlation between child sexual abuse and having a diagnosis of a clinical eating disorder. Child sexual abuse has been associated with the increase in displaying disordered eating behaviors and/or symptoms. Abuse experiences contribute to a woman's development of bulimia, possibly because the woman is utilizing bulimia as a coping mechanism and an attempt to manage the emotional fallout from the abuse. Dysfunction within an individual can be the result of various occurrences, whether it is a traumatic experience that has stemmed into a life of self–doubt and vulnerability, or it is a series of unfortunate events that has led the individual to believe that life is simply an ongoing controversy. However, dysfunction within a family is much more than self–afflicted stress, it is rooted within the familial bonds that gradually break as a result of conflict, co–dependent adults, perhaps substance abuse, and oftentimes a struggle of conformity brought on by an external source. In the novels Revolutionary Road and Anna Karenina, Richard Yates and Leo Tolstoy depict familial dysfunction that can occur as a result of society's overwhelming ... Nevertheless, to fundamentally comprehend this gist of this essay, one must primarily understand the definition of a dysfunctional family to be able to dissect the topic and see how the novels Anna Karenina and Revolutionary Road personify the description. Louise Mark, John Olesen, Joanne Fallon explain in A manual for chemical dependency and psychiatric treatment that, "Most of our rules are learned from our parents, who learned the rules from their parents etc. This means that dysfunctional families are generational, and if left untreated, will become more severe in ensuing generations" (Mark, Olesen, Fallon, 67). These scholars explain that dysfunctional families result from several generations of corrupted laws, thus, one's ancestors set the standards and following generations have simply carried on the customs. The scholars go on to compare and contrast several traits that categorize a family as dysfunctional as opposed to nurturing, and one of the prominent qualities seem to be "everyone must conform to strongest person's ideas and values" (97). In today's society that would be heavily frowned upon. • 33. The Causes And Negative Effects Of Dysfunctional Family "See, I think there are roads that lead us to each other. But in my family, there were no roads – just underground tunnels. I think we all got lost in those underground tunnels. No, not lost. We just lived there." by Benjamin Alire Sáenz. Dysfunctional families can lead to a few bad things in life, especially towards their own children. When having a bad effect towards each other, they usually get lost in what the problem is and forget about how to overcome them. The negative effects can also change an individual's identity as well. Family dysfunction can have a negative effect on an individual's identity in several ways. One way family dysfunction affects an individual's identity is by lack of affection. First, when a child does not get the affection needed from their family. For example, when a child starts to grow up. They are needing affection whenever they want whether it being alone, tired, happy, or to feel encouraged. It makes themselves feel good when getting enough affection from their parents. Yet without it, it would make the child feel depressed and alone. In the "Erickson's Stages of Psychosocial Development" by Kendra Cherry, Erickson talks about what would happen when a child does not get affection (stage 1). The child would start to isolate themselves from others around them when growing up and feel self conscious. Secondly, when the child grows up and does not get enough affection, the child grows up and will isolate themselves from society. For example, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Dysfunctional Family In The Renaissance Era Drama is in the top 5 category of popular genres in the world. Present in those dramas often times are dysfunctional families that we can't help but binge watch on TV, like Empire, Family Guy, and The Game of Thrones. None of these families are perfect; they double cross each other, commit adultery , do anything for power and even try to kill each other, but that's what makes their shows so entertaining. Just when you think your family is full of a bunch of psycho nut jobs, you are able to take comfort in watching families that have it even worse than you do. It is not that we are just cynical human beings but we just like to be entertained. This is no different than the revenge tragedy plays of the Renaissance era that have a huge focus on dysfunctional families. If you take out the titles: Duke, Duchess, prince, servant etc. modern audiences can find these plays compelling and a lot like movies of today in regards to jealousy, rebellion and attention grabbing scenes. In The Spanish Tragedy by Thomas Kyd, there's a family consisting of a controlling father (The Duke), disobedient daughter (Bel–imperia) and her meddling, overprotective brother (Lorenzo). Bel–imperia is commanded by her father to marry a prince named Balthazar that is wealthy and has a high position. Dysfunctional Family Essay A dysfunctional family is a group of people usually related by some means, not always necessarily by blood, in which conflict, misbehavior, maltreatment and neglecting create a hostile life for its members. Some examples will help us examine this issue better, taking us to discuss the different factors that contribute to the formation of such families, along with its consequences in today's society. Most families have some periods of time when functioning is impaired by stressful circumstances, for instance: death, illness, unemployment, finances, stress, work, school, etc. Moreover, healthy families tend to return to normal functioning after the crisis passes. In dysfunctional families, however, problems tend to be chronic. A healthy family is not perfect; there may be misunderstandings, tensions, conflicts, yelling, hurt and anger, but not always. Emotional expression is allowed; and it's acceptable to get mad sometimes, as long as it's not all the time. The Holy Bible teaches on Ephesians 4–23 "Be ye angry and sin not, let not the sun go down upon your wrath". Also, in a healthy family, rules tend to be explicit and are consistent, but with some flexibility to adapt to individual needs and particular situations. Ephesians 6–4 exemplifies this idea with the following verse: "And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath". Children are treated with respect, and do not fear emotional, verbal, physical, or sexual abuse. On the contrary, they feel safe, as they know that their parents are there to protect them and to look after their well–being. • 41. Dysfunctional Families : A Dysfunctional Family It is difficult to come by healthy families in modern society, for many families experience many hardships and tribulations all throughout life. The dysfunctional family is apparent in many households in today's society, for a dysfunctional family is described as any condition in which healthy family functioning is interfered (Santa Clara University). There are many reasons for why families become dysfunctional in America today, and statistics are staggering, showing that about half of all marriages end in divorce. Dysfunctional families can be caused either by parents who are insufficient in their efforts to raise their children, or it can be the children who misbehave and cause ruckus in the household. While healthy families tend to return to their normal lives after a time of intense stress or crisis, dysfunctional families experience chronic or longing problems that never seem to fade (Santa Clara University). Dysfunctional families are characterized by specific causes and factors that lead them to become unhealthy and dysfunctional, and these causes vary from alcoholic and abusive parents to parents who lack parenting skills. A catastrophic event, such as a death in the family or a parent having an affair, can cause families to also fall victim to dysfunction in the household. Cures to help fix the unhealthy functioning of many families exist in society, and they can be used to help repair lost relationships with parents and children. The dysfunctional family is a ... It may be stress, peer pressure, or even the difficulty coping with the ills of school life. Teens use drugs because they have no true guidance. The absence, of certain vital components such as, someone to talk to, morals, values, or even responsibility forces teens to use drugs. One major contributing cause of adolescent drug use and abuse is a dysfunctional family, a family that does not provide all of the above. Also the lack of stern morals and values set forth at a young age, present to society teens that are not equipped to make thorough decisions. Lara Alvord confesses that at age twelve she tried marijuana for the first time with consent of her mother, who was an occasional drug user. Trying marijuana led Lara to use other drugs, and by the time she was an adult she was addicted to cocaine. Lara admits that had her mother "put her foot down and said I could not have done drugs, I wouldn't have felt comfortable enough to try them in the first place"(Baldauf). In an event that both parents are avidly involved in the lives of their children, that child would be less likely to get involved with drugs or other unacceptable activities. Dysfunctional means not operating properly, so a dysfunctional family is a family that does not operate properly. One characteristic of a dysfunctional family is the display of not respecting others. Another characteristic is a lack of trust. Greed also tarnishes families. These characteristics are seen in "King Lear." Not showing respect for others is a characteristic of a dysfunctional family. When family members do not trust each other it can be humiliating to those involved. This can ruin relationships. When Cordelia publicly refuses to go along with Lear's game, Lear sees it as a lack of respect. In his moment of fury, Lear disowns Cordelia splitting apart the family. Another time this is seen is when Lear comes to stay with Goneril. "Here do you keep a hundred knights and squires, men so disordered, so debauched and bold, that is our court, infected with their manners, shoes like a riotous inn," (Shakespeare p.107). Essay on Dysfunctional Families in Song of Solomon Dysfunctional Families in Song of Solomon The African American families in Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon present abnormality and dysfunction. Normalcy, seen in common nuclear families, is absent. The protagonist, Milkman, is shaped by his dysfunctional relationships with parental figures. The abnormality of the mother and child relationship is apparent in Song of Solomon. The mother figure seems to have misguided hopes. Toni Morrison, presents an image of an unnatural, extended time of maternal bonding. The character, Ruth, breastfeeds her son, Milkman, until he is four or five years of age. Ruth breastfeeds Milkman for this unnaturally lengthy amount of time because it makes her feel like her son is a part of her. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Song of Solomon, the father provokes fear in his children. Oddly, Milkman's sisters seem to look forward to the anger and tension of their father. Morrison writes, "The way he mangled their grace, wit, and self–esteem was the single excitement of their days...Without the tension and drama he(the father) ignited, they might not have known what to do with themselves" ,and the sisters "waited eagerly for any hint of him.(11)" Rather than expressing love for their children verbally, the father figures often show their love through actions and through providing for the children. We see an example of this in the poem "Those Winter Sundays" by Robert Hayden. The father in this poem wakes especially early in the morning to chop wood, start a fire, and make the house warm for his son. Despite the father's loving actions, the son speaks indifferently to him and never thanks him. In Morrison's novel, the father sees love as ownership. After Milkman begins working for him, he is "delighted. His son belongs to him now and not to Ruth(63)." In addition, the father wishes for his son to focus less on education and more on the "American Dream". He tells Milkman, "Let me tell you right now the one important thing you'll ever need to know: own things. And let the things you own own other things. Then you'll own yourself and other people too(55)." Milkman's father did not have any respect for college graduates. He believed that "college was time spent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In order for a child to lead a healthy, functional life, a family needs to be strong and functional. When a family becomes dysfunctional, the most effected is the children. The children forget their children and act out which makes them difficult to live with. If a dysfunctional family, let alone the children, knew that therapy and help was available to them, more families would become healthy. Specifically, his relationship with his mother. In the research that I have done in almost all accounts of Jung's life, there is a large emphasis on Jung's relationship with his mother. I think that one of the reasons why he states to have such a distrust of women is because his mother was not entirely there for him. When she was present, she treated Jung, who was about three years old as an adult. This may also have affected the way that Jung developed as a person. Dysfunctional families are most often a result of the alcoholism, substance abuse, or other addictions of parents, parents' untreated mental illnesses/defects or personality disorders, or the parents emulating their own dysfunctional parents and dysfunctional family experiences. Types of Dysfunctional Families 1. The Alcoholic or Chemically Dependent Family System 2. The Emotionally or Psychologically Disturbed Family System 3. The Physically or Sexually Abusing Family System 4. The Religious Fundamentalist or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Criticism can be aimed at the child's looks, intelligence, capabilities, or basic value. Some verbal abusers are very direct, while others use subtle put–downs disguised as humor. Both types are just as damaging. Definitions of physical abuse vary widely. Many parents, at one time or another, have felt the urge to strike their child. With physically abusive parents, however, the urge is frequent and little effort is made to control this impulse. The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act defines physical abuse as "the infliction of physical injuries such as bruises, burns, welts, cuts, bone or skull fractures; these are caused by kicking, punching, biting, beating, knifing, strapping, paddling, etc." Striking a child has much to do with meeting the parent's emotional needs and nothing to do with concern for the child; parents often erroneously justify the abuse as "discipline" intended to "help" the child. Physically abusive parents can create an environment of terror for the child, particularly since violence is often random and unpredictable. Abused children often feel anger. Children of abusive parents have tremendous difficulties developing feelings of trust and safety even in their adult lives. While parents may justify or rationalize verbal or physical abuse as discipline aimed at somehow helping the child, there is no rationalization for sexual abuse. Sexual abuse is the most blatant example of an adult abusing a child purely for that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. My Family : Growing Up In A Dysfunctional Family Through my middle school and high school career, I would've never thought growing up in a dysfunctional family would build my character. My family was separated like two couples that divorced. Although I didn't like some of my sisters, I showed favoritism to one who had the same interest as me. My mom worked at a retirement home where she took care of elderly people. Her taking care of us was already stressful since she claimed we put her through hell in her late 30's. As for my dad, he didn't have much luck landing a job and remained a stay at home dad. The one thing that I appreciated the most was being around my other 5 siblings. Ronny, 27, and Louis, 24, are my older brothers. Ashley, 23, and Iesha, 22, are my oldest sisters. However, Arnae is 17 and she is the baby girl of the family. Most of us got along when we decided to be in one another presence. For example, my sisters Ashley and Iesha hung out with one another because they found interest in gossiping, fashion, and makeup. My two eldest brothers loved watching the NBA together and playing video games against each other. My youngest sister and I were left together despite our times of arguing over food. I was the only talented person in our family with skills in Art, dancing, and basketball. When I was in the 6th grade, my siblings and I would eat by ourselves in our own rooms. There was never a time where we would sit at a table having dinner while talking about how our day was. I was never bothered by it until it ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Dysfunctional-Words That Describe My Family Broken, distant, dysfunctional– words that describe my family. Growing up and seeing kids with both a mom and dad in their life didn't affect me until I was about 7 years old. That's when I started realizing that my parents never showed up to any "Bring your mom to school" days or Daddy Daughter Dances. My nana was always there with a Dr. Pepper, Cheetos, and a big smile. Nana was always the first one there for me. Then, my life was flipped. I have three younger (half) sisters, but they don't live with me. I was basically an only child for 11 years. When my (half) brother was born I was no longer the baby of the house. Nana found a new baby to spoil, and I was pushed to the side. My mom, being much older than when she had me, found excitement ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Dysfunctional Families Dysfunctional families breed dysfunctional children. This can stay with them all the way up to their marriage and is most likely to occur in their relationship. According to research done by the University of Chicago ( published in the journal of Abnormal Child Psychology) social skills can be interpreted as everything from the basic "please and thank you" to speaking in large crowds. How parents deal with that is just as important for the child as the violence they are being exposed to. In the end, they both affect the child one way or another. Part of the Brain The brain is the central control system for the entire body. It is made up of many parts, but there is a very important part of the brain, in this case would be the "Visual Cortex"– the part of the brain responsible for processing visual information. This part of the brain is what gets fired up when watching a horror movie. (US National Library of Medicine) gives me information on how the visual cortex works in the midst of viewing horror movies. "Dopamine" – (a neurotransmitter released by the brain that plays a number of roles) gets produced, then, the image captured by the eye is transmitted to the "Optic Nerve" (located in the back of the eye) and is transmitted via electrical impulses. This nerve also terminates the cells of the lateral ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 73. Great Expectations Dysfunctional Families Essay Dysfunctional families are a relatively common occurrence, and they often are consumed by their dysfunction. In Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, there are many dysfunctional families, and they all are the result of various problems. The family unit of Joe, Mrs. Joe and Pip, a lower class family faces very different problems from the family that is Ms. Havisham and Estella, a middle or upper class family. The commonality that dysfunctional families in Great Expectations share is the profound effect that dysfunction has on other families. Pip's family, Joe and Mrs. Joe suffer dysfunction as a result of Mrs. Joe's authoritarian "brought up by hand" method of interacting within her family. Mrs. Joe is the most dominant family member, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Havisham and Estella feel over Pip and Joe affects Pip and Joe greatly. Pip's entire perception of life and his future changes after just one meeting with Ms. Havisham and Estella. Pip begins his relationship with Joe with Joe being a friend to Pip. "Joe and I being fellow sufferers, and having confidences as such..." (Great Expectations p. 40) Pip's perception of Joe is very quickly shifted when he experiences spending time with Estella and Ms. Havisham. "Quote of changed perception" Pip's disappointment upon becoming Joe's apprentice is influenced by Ms. Havisham because Pip is expecting to become a gentleman and marry Estella. There is no reason for Pip to this way, except that the contempt of Ms. Havisham and Estella has warped Pip's perception. Pip's motivation for education Joe is derived from Pip's shame of Joe's coarseness. Pip's relationship with Joe following Pip's fortune and sudden move to London becomes strained. "When pip comes back quote" Pip begins to be contemptuous to Joe as Pip becomes more and more educated. Pip's relationship with Joe is complicated and is governed by Pip trying to become a gentleman, which, for most of the novel, a result of Pip's interaction with Ms. ... • 77. Growing Up in Dysfunctional Families Essay "People who come from dysfunctional families are not destined for a dysfunctional life," – (Bo Bennett). In today's society dysfunctional homes have been a major issue in the United States. Many people hope that once they leave home, they will leave their family and their childhood problems behind. However, many people find that they experience similar problems, as well as similar feelings and relationship patterns, long after they have left the family environment. In the eyes of Americans today, children grow up in family environments which help them feel worthwhile, valuable, and appreciated by their family. According to experts at University of Illinois,"Ideally, children grow up in family environments which help them feel worthwhile ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While many people believe that most families in America are well functioning families, the novel Montana 1948 shows a good portrayal of a dysfunctional family because they did not have hope for the future and without hope dysfunction will spread through generations of families like a disease, destroying many lives along the way. Some children in today's society aren't all taught the do's and don'ts of what is publicly accepted. From different environments children are raised in, they think that whatever they are taught is the right thing. They have no prior knowledge of what is normal. As Marie Hartwell–Walker states in "Why Dysfunctional Families Stay That Way" she shares that, "Because they don't know what normal is, a dysfunctional family is participating in the pretense that they are a normal family bringing up children within the range of what is normal. Because we live in a culture that respects family privacy, someone usually has to get badly hurt before the illusion is questioned by anyone outside its ranks," (Hartwell –Walker). The main reason of why children have a hard time blending into society is because they are unwilling to change their ideas and values for the fact that they were taught differently. And for the fact that they were taught a different way they get offended when someone tries to change them or criticize them on their upbringing and lifestyle. These people try to teach them these things because they weren't ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
