2. What uses/gratification are
offered by the texts your
target audience enjoy?
Our opening title sequence provides information about the severity of Kidnapping in today's
society, showing how much it can affect family and friends who then almost stop their daily
routines to search for their missing loved one. This is an example of self education as well as
helping to satisfy the general curiosity and general interest of the reader. It is due to the opening
title sequence beginning as a news report style with a voice over, building tension for the audience
however towards the end of the sequence we see that Victoria is still and live and safe; helping to
satisfy the audiences general interest. Although we don't see the identity of the man who has
kidnapped her, still generating some curiosity to a degree.
More over our title sequence will allow the audience to generate questions, sparking debates
through social interaction because they may question why the child was taken at a cinema?, why
there was no security to ensure it never happened? And who left victoria un attended?
Our title sequence would also hopefully entertain the target audience as it is a thriller and by
following the traditional conventions because we want the audience to be on the edge of their seat
following the story with all their emotion; providing them with some sort of escapism as they
forget their problems with the severity of the story behind the sequence.
3. How is your film concept and plot
offering these uses/grats?
Throughout the sequence we hear through the use of voice over how much of a great student
Victoria is which is why the audience may feel emotion that she has gone missing. Also through
the use of the dark lighting towards the end of the sequence where the mysterious man appears,
it builds tension which would be used to help engage the audience. In addition the audience see
the family and friends of Victoria searching for her and putting up missing people posters it
helps to represent how the audience may feel as they see the fear and hopes in the family and
friends eyes.
More over, the non-diegetic slow paced track which is played alongside the voiceover helps to
create a soft tone and create sympathy which the audience may feel as they begin to hear about
Victoria. It would also build tension as you see her family friends attempt to ask people with
very little success, so it creates a climax contributing to the overall plot. Also the non-diegetic
sound of the wind, helps to make the audience aware that something is significant due to the
change in sound- making it more weary and mysterious.
Followed by a over the shoulder shot of a man looking at the missing persons tweets which adds
to the entertainment factors because it creates stigmas such as 'Who is this man?'
4. How does your film concept, plot and
target the values and beliefs of your
audience?
Our chosen film drama is a mystery drama thriller which includes key
conventions such climatic movements causing the audience to have
adrenaline rushes as they are left on the edge of their seats but also
mystery and thrill.
They target the values of our target audience as a result of having such a
realistic topic which could be quite controversial as well, because of the
setting where Victoria was a kidnapped; a cinema it is very unlikely. As
a result of it being realistic the audience are more likely to feel more
involved so it would allow them to escape and feel more sympathetic.
5. How does this appeal to the target
audience?
This will appeal to our target audience because it helps to engage the audience in the plot. The
opening title begins very slow paced which could be said that the news report style opening is
important because it helps to set the scene and make the audience aware of who Victoria is and
what happened to her. However the final few seconds towards the end of the sequence could be
more engaging as well as important because there a superior tension which is created through the
use of Mise-en-scene and camera work.
The use of the low key lighting in the scene where a man is looking at the missing person's tweets
helps to create tension but also the footstep clip over the poster shows that he has no care and
consideration for missing victoria; which leads to the audience questioning why. These question
would then developed throughout the film as the audience continue and get to know the habits of
the man who kidnapped Victoria. The last scene of the person walking up to Victoria is likely to be
the most interesting scene because we see Victoria and we see the person holding her hostage for
the first time which create many stigmas.
