Christopher "Moot" Poole founded the anonymous image board 4chan. On 4chan, users can post anonymously without revealing their identity. Poole's Ted Talk discussed the benefits of anonymity online, arguing people expose too much personal information on social media. While Poole used humorous images to engage the audience, the summary writer felt Poole lacked passion and enthusiasm in his delivery. Laughter and passion are important for engaging an audience effectively.
4. QUICK BACK STORY
Chris Poole became famous for his start of an online Image board known as
4Chan. There are no names on this board and no one knows who you are and
why you are saying or posting what you are posting. You have complete
freedom. “It is very raw and very uncensored”- Moot
5. LAUGHTER IS KEY!
Right from the start Chris had the audience in laughter striking immediately at
number four of the Ted Commandments. Showing many of the various
images that have spawned from his sight that have become some of the most
popular things on the internet today. The audience could easily relate due to
our love of social media and how much the images show up in it.
6. SO WHY ANONYMITY?
The point of his speech was that we display ourselves entirely to much on the
internet. We have no secrets with social media now. If we do not end up
telling it about ourselves someone else ends up saying it for us. With his
message board no one knows anyone. People that have exposed themselves
for the wrong reason have been tracked down through extraneous methods of
those who do keep themselves anonymous. He helps display the power of
people on the internet and why it’s a place that you want to keep yourself
unknown. His main thesis to me is: Be known in the world not on the
internet.
7. HOW DID THE SPEAKER DO?
Chris of course held the audiences attention with his hilarious photos and
stories of some of the good that has come out of his website but truth his he
does give off the feel that he did not really care to be there. He may just be a
person who doesn't’t have a lot of enthusiasm which can appear boring to
people who were not excited about the subject.
9. CONTRAST….
Ken and Chris both wanted to get the audience laughing. If anything that is a
big thing I am taking from this. Laughter is a great way to start a speech and
help lighten the mood and your nerves. With Ken you could really hear the
passion in his speech and how much it meant to him. With Chris it was very
monotone and he let his images do most of his talking and describing. Ken
handles everything with his words and his words alone. Seeing Chris is there
because of the work of his website being and Image Board it makes sense
why its done his talking because its what got him there. To others they could
just find his voice boring and uninteresting.
10. WHAT I LEARNED
Laughter and Passion are truly the keys in a speech. In my normal life I love to
laugh. It means the world to me. I like to find humor or a joke in anything. If
I can translate that to the right way I feel it could make speeches easier for me.
Passion. Poole did not have as much passion in his speech and I feel it could
lose and audience if you don’t have it. I want to be able to take everything I
am feeling and make sure the audience leaves feeling that exact same way.
Ignite a fire in them that has been burning inside me for a long time.
