Instructions
You are required to construct a set of timber stairs following the plans that are below. This staircase will
include stairs, balustrade, handrail, and landing. You are required to have an outcome that meets
industry and National Standards. Prior to beginning this project, you are to actively participate in a
Toolbox talk and JSA.
You will be required to upload the following documents on completion to Ready Skills
•You are required to fill out and complete the JSA (Job Safety Analysis) and Toolbox talk
•Calculate rise and goings of stairs
•Calculate the Handrail and Balustrade
•List the required tools and equipment needed for the tasks
•List the required materials for this task
•Review the self-assessment checklist
•Construct a set of stairs with Balustrade to code and working drawings

Calculate the Handrail and Balustrade
You will need to calculate your balustrade spacing’s for this set of stairs.
1.Calculate overall spacing between the 2 newel posts.
2.Calculate the space between each baluster

Calculate the Handrail and Balustrade
You will need to calculate your balustrade spacing’s for this set of stairs.

Construct aset of stairs witha balustrade inthe barn workshop
•Set out and house stringers according to your plans
•Cut and install treads to specified width
•Construct the landing as specified
•Install completed staircase according to plan
•Construct balustrade according to calculations and plan
Once the Staircase has been deemed satisfactory:
•De-construct the structure
•De-nail and restack timbers
•Any timber below 500mm gets put into a designated bin
•The treads need to be restacked
•The stringers need to be stacked in a tidy manner at a space selected by your teacher
•Finalise this document and submit to your assessor

Assessment Conditions
Assessment will be always conducted in simulated work environment CIT Bruce under teacher supervision.If
at any stage the assessor deems the assessment to be unsafe it will be stopped, and this could be counted as
your first attempt. Access to all resources, manual and standards is permitted. All mobile phones are to be
switch off.
Materials Provided by CIT
All materials and tools required to complete the task will be provided.
Materials You Need
Personal protective equipment PPE, devise to upload into Ready Skillsand nail bag.
Attempts
You may have at least two (2) attempts for this assessment.
If your first attempt is not successful, your teacher will discuss your results with you and will arrange
a second attempt.
If your second attempt is not successful, you may be required to re-enrol in this unit.
