3. the house of commons have F
4. a monarch is a king or queen S
EXTRA CHALLENGE: Turn the fragments into sentences.
Emotion (comma) sentences
Today we will be focusing on this specific sentence type.
By adding an emotions to the beginning of your sentence you are enticing the
reader in and also giving them a feel for how it is to be in that situation.
Remember, the comma is REALLY important and you need to make sure that you
are including this in you sentence.
We can use many words to describe our
emotions…
How to compose an emotion (comma) sentence
Thrilled, the girl gazed down at her new, golden puppy.
Emotion Comma What caused the emotion
Lets have a look at some more examples
Outraged, the head teacher looked down upon the girl who had painted the table green.
Motivated, the children rushed outside to practice their football skills.
Chuckling, the boy continued to read his book about aliens and time machines.
Surprised, the man gazed down upon his enormous whale-shaped birthday cake.
REMEMBER:
Write out these sentences and fill in the gaps.
1. _________ , the cat inspected at her new fluffy mouse toy.
2. Excited, ______________________________.
3. __________, Miss Rickwood read her book.
4. Disgusted, _________________________.
Now you have done these, try writing 3 emotion (comma) sentences of your own.

Do now – Full stop finder! ANSWERS
Rewrite this into your workbook adding in full stops (and capital
letters).
The girl went to the shop and bought some bread. After going to the
shop the lovely, sweet girl took the bus home. Here she found her
mother waiting for her. She was very pleased to see her.
Homophones
◦ These words all sound the same, but they are spelt differently, and have different
meanings.
◦there
◦their
◦they’re
‘there’ refers to a place or position.
The children are playing over there.
◦ There is an aeroplane in the sky.
‘their’ is a possessive adjective. This means it shows ownership
or belonging.
Their lunch was very tasty.
The children are wearing their school uniform.
‘they’re’ is a contraction. This means it is a shorter way of saying
‘they are’.
They’re playing a game together.
They’re running around the track.

Day 3 – WALT: Write
instructions.
Spelling Shed
Spend 10 minutes on Spelling Shed practicing your
spellings from this week.
Remember, if you have any problems with logging
in then you need to get in contact with the Year 4
team (via the form on the Ashcombe Primary
School Website) so that we can sort this for you.
Do now – add an appositive
An appositive add additional information about the noun. For example: Miss Rickwood, a Year 4 teacher, works
at Ashcombe primary school.
‘a Year 4 teacher’ is the appositive as it adds additional information about Miss Rickwood.
Try these!
My Mum, ______________, likes to bake cakes.
English, ______________ , is the study of the English language.
Giraffes, _____________ , can bee seen in Africa.
Do now – add an appositive EXAMPLES
You could have written:
My Mum, a 50 year old woman, likes to bake cakes.
English, the best subject ever, is the study of the English language.
Giraffes, tall animals with long necks, can bee seen in Africa.
If you put something different it doesn’t mean that your answer is wrong. If you’re unsure
ask an adult to check this over for you.
Lets have a closure look at how we write
instructions…
Title: Start with this at the top of you page. How to make…
Introduction: Here you should write a few sentences explaining why
someone should buy your product. Questions are useful here.
You will need: Here you need to
list EVERYTHING that the
person will need to complete
these instruction. You may wish
to separate this into ingredients
and equipment to make it simple
for the reader to follow.
Method: This is where you explain step-by-step how to make your product.
You’ll notice that these are numbered and relatively short! You need to
make this as simple as you can for your reader.
You’ll also notice that fronted
adverbials are being used such as:
firstly, next, secondly etc.
Remember to use a comma after
your fronted adverbial.
Write your own instructions on how to
make something
◦ This maybe a cooking video from YouTube such as:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VrUdtzXquWk (Jamie Oliver’s simple bread
recipe)
◦ A family recipe that you know how to make.
◦ A creation of your very own – How to build a fairy fort.
◦ It is completely up to you!!
Day 4 – WALT: Edit
and improve our work.
