The "business" of music has a deep and dense history, music itself began as a means of communicating emotions from pleasure to pain and
everything in between, the "business" of music became a money making proposition. The average person may believe that an artist's success is
defined by hearing their music on the radio or when they perform to a big stadium audience. An artist's measure of success, however, is more likely
that moment at which they sign a record deal. Before the most recent technological advancements, a record deal was the single factor thought about
as having the power to potentially skyrocket an unknown artist 's career into the next level. As a result of the digital age, record labels' utilization
has shifted. We (of this generation) are well aware that digital media also has the power to launch a career. For example, Adele was discovered on
Myspace at 18 years old in 2008 and currently has the highest one–week sales of an album in music history (Lansky, 2016). If a "career" is launched
because of social medial followers, the path to monetization usually starts with the very exciting step of an artist signing with a record label. This
technological revolution has given birth to the second–generation record label called "indie" (independent) labels adding a new additional component
to the previous and only option of the major label.

The recorded music industry is currently experiencing difficulties unimaginable during the 1980s, which were a period of growth, consolidation, and
technical advancement. The album sector was still strong across the industry, something that became a financial boom from the mid–80s onwards with
the advent and subsequent popularity of compact discs (CD). CDs became the dominant carrier of recorded music and quickly superseded vinyl
albums. This was a major fillip to record companies, as fans bought CDs of their favourite old vinyl albums, thus classic albums artists from the 60s
and 70s sold substantial amounts of CD versions of their old album catalogue. As many major record companies were part of multinational electric
goods companies, a valid argument can be that record companies were providing the software (CDs) for the multinationals hardware (CD players). To
illustrate this point, the electrical goods giants Philips and Sony owned record companies, and as stated on the Philips' website also collaborated in the
research and development of the compact disc. The effect of owning both aspects of the process resulted in profits being monopolised by the

AJR is an indie pop band containing three brothers Adam, 23, Jack, 16 and Ryan,19 from New York City. Their musical sound incorporates oldies

and their music. Before Gordy come along to change the standards of american culture whites and blacks had different labels and music. Motown
Records is the first record label to successfully market black artists to the white mainstream audience. (Dahl 12–15) Berry Gordy was the first African
American to own a music label and have artists of different races on the same label. In the 1960s racial tension was a problem because of segregation

The average person may believe that an artist's success is defined by hearing their music on the radio or when they perform to a big stadium audience.
