Gandhi Case Study
Gandhi was born in suppressed India in 1869, which was four years after the end of the American
Civil War. Gandhi studied law in London, England. Gandhi liked that the English respected the law.
Gandhi disapproved of India's caste system. What made Gandhi's Nonviolent Movement Work?
Gandhi used at least three different tactics to make nonviolence work: disciplined civil
disobedience, accepting jail time, and embracing the enemy.
One nonviolent tactic that Gandhi used to make nonviolence work was disciplined civil
disobedience. According to Webb Miller, "The marchers were disciplined by native police who beat
them with metal pipes" (Document B). Civil Disobedience allowed the Nonviolent Movement to
work because the marchers were willing to die for change. Since they were willing to sacrifice
themselves to get independence tales me that independence was really important to India. Even
though the marchers got beaten up badly, they did not fight back. By not fighting back, India was
getting closer to get freedom. Webb Miller was there when the marchers were getting hurt. He wrote
down everything he saw and shared with the world. By sharing with the world, people put pressure
to Britain because now the world know what Britain is doing to India. This helped India to get
independence because it hurt Britain's reputation. One nonviolent tactic that Gandhi used to make
nonviolence work was by accepting jail time. When Gandhi was in South Africa, he went to prison,

Individualism or Collectivism in Society Essay
Debate Question: Which ideological group has had the greatest impact on modern society?
Individualism or Collectivism. Terms: Individualism–> when you value the freedom and worth of
the individual, sometimes over the security and harmony of the group or a belief in the importance
of the individual and the virtue of self–reliance and personal independence
Collectivism–> is basically when you think that values and the goals of the group and the common
good over the goals of any one individual are the most beneficial. It stresses human interdependence
and the importance of a collective, rather than the importance of separate individuals

If we all work together to help people out we can get a lot of ideas put together and do a lot of good
for the group. In Canada we are a mostly collective country especially next to the states. We have
universal health care which widely helps out people who wouldn't otherwise be able to see a doctor
or dentist without it.
If the government helps people out then the standard of living would increase. Poverty could be
diminished, health problems could be cured, and people would be able to afford leisurely activities
putting money back into the government to help others out. Health care would be free and widely
available to all to use. No having to pay for expensive prescriptions and doctors visits cutting back
on the spread of diseases and sick people. Public property is used and is managed by a collective to
benefit everyone in the community. All kids can go to school no matter their parents financial state
giving them a chance to finish and go on to post secondary and get a good paying job. In Saudi
Arabia and Sweden schooling is paid for by the government from kindergarten all the way to post
secondary education. It benefits everyone because everyone can go to school regardless of their
wealth. It inspires people to get a good education and a good job. Of course you have to have the
marks to get into post secondary but its paid for. Studies have shown that people living in a
collective society have lower crime rates than those who are living in a

The Crucial Role Of Feminism In Mainstream Media
The mainstream media, such as national news broadcasting stations, magazines, and social media
sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, play a crucial role in the promotion and
encouragement of feminism. According to Andy Zeisler in a Quick Take article in Time magazine,
"Feminism, for better and for worse, has become trendy," (Zeisler np). According to the beliefs
expressed in an article by Debra Baker in the NWSA Journal, media has mistreated feminism. She
claims, "...the media portray [active, assertive women]– has turned all "feminists" into a frightening
fringe element," (Beck 139). In all honesty, the media has portrayed feminism with a negative
connotation, but this is a fair portrayal. Consequently, feminism has become a distasteful ... Show

By definition in the Meriam–Webster Dictionary, equality means, "the quality or state of being equal
or of the same measure, quantity, amount, or number as another," ("Equality" np). On the other
hand, equity is defined as, "justice according to natural law or right; specifically: freedom from bias
or favoritism; dealing fairly and equally with all concerned," ("Equity" np). Most feminists, without
even realizing their error, are fighting for equity instead of fighting for equality. With reference to
the SGBA e–Learning Resource: Rising to the Challenge, we can understand a direct distinction
between equality and equity. "Equity, as we have seen, involves trying to understand and give
people what they need to enjoy full, healthy lives," (Clow np). From context, the term "equity"
should be associated with giving people what they need for a happy lifestyle. "Equality, in contrast,
aims to ensure that everyone gets the same things in order to enjoy full, healthy lives. Like equity,
equality aims to promote fairness and justice, but it can only work if everyone starts from the same
place and needs the same things," (Clow np). It is impossible to provide everyone in the world, male
and female, the same circumstances. This has become a challenge for those who associate
themselves with finding equality for all. It is physical impossible because we are born in different
circumstances, with incomparable talents and strengths. Barbara Clow, Yvonne Hanson, and Jennifer
Bernier, authors of the module "Distinguish between Equality and Equity," prove an important point
as they contrast equality and equity. They use an analogy of the failure of providing equality to
competitors in a race at a track meet. "The concept of equality would have us treat the runners in
exactly the same way, ensuring that they all start at the same place on the track. But we know that
runners in the inside

The Environmental Issue From Hell Ibsen Analysis
Bill McKibben in "The Environmental Issue from Hell" and Rachel Carson in "The Obligation to
Endure" both believe that environmental issues are some of the most important issues facing
mankind today. In "The Environmental Issue from Hell," McKibben argues that Americans need to
take a moral approach to solving the global warming problem. He is passionate about the problems
associated with global warming, but he fails to provide concrete support. Carson argues in "The
Obligation to Endure" that humans have ignorantly tampered with the delicate balance of nature
through the use of pesticides. She presents a valid argument; however, it is weakened by her failure
to cite her sources and her sole reliance on her own credibility as a biologist ... Show more content

He says, "So perhaps we need some symbols to get us started, some places to sharpen the debate and
rally ourselves to action." He claims that sports utility vehicles are one of the main blamable
symbols for global warming. He goes as far as to say "SUVs are more than mere symbols. They are
a major part of the problem..." McKibben opposes SUVs because he claims they are simply
unnecessary, not fuel efficient, and do not provide any additional safety compared to average cars.
He claims, "SUVs essentially are machines for burning fossil fuel that just happen to also move you
and your stuff around. But what makes them such a perfect symbol is the brute fact that they are
simply unnecessary." He fails to back this claim with evidence which weakens his argument because
it appears to be biased. Furthermore, he extends the symbol of the SUV to American consumerism.
McKibben claims that SUVs are "...the perfect metaphor for a heedless, supersized society." He
strays from his thesis at this point because consumerism is unrelated to the morality involved in
global warming. In "The Obligation to Endure," Carson does not use symbols like McKibben does;
instead, she directly assigns the blame to humans for the environmental issues associated with
nature's balancing cycle. She claims that through pesticides and insecticides, importation of new
species, and failure to follow the advice of

Margaret Sanger Vs Betty Friedan
Throughout history, leaders of political and social movements have designed slogans and
catchphrases to mobilize ordinary citizens into political and social activists. Historically, activists
such as Nelson Mandela, Mohandas Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and countless
others have, in their speeches and writings, created a perfect pairing of words that persists in the
mind of the listener. Two such activists of the Twentieth Century were Margaret Sanger and Betty
Friedan. Friedan and Sanger greatly influenced the women's rights movement; despite both being
feminists, however, their personal beliefs in terms of other civil rights movements often fell at
opposite ends of the spectrum. Both Friedan and Sanger popularized phrases which empowered their
respective followers and similar activists to push back against a system designed to repress them;
the phrases that the two activists used, however, reflected their different brands of activism and
revealed their differences of opinion on who mattered both for and in the Women's Rights
Movement. : Sanger with the phrase "birth control" and Friedan with the term "feminine mystique."
Betty Friedan, who lived from 1921–2006, constructed her activism through her writing. She wrote
for trade unions and magazines, and later, at the age of 42, published her best known work The
Feminine Mystique. This book stirred up a following among urban, white, middle–class American
women who felt that their male counterparts

Essay On Latin America Turns To The Left
Latin America Turns to The Left Within the last 20 years many Latin American nations have
changed course from a neoliberal polity to one that is sided more to the left wing spectrum. "A
significant part of Latin America is governed today by political movements and governments that
call themselves 'leftist' or are classified as such by external observers." (Luna) Furthermore, the shift
in direction politically has been classified by 3 factors; "1) opposing incumbents by mobilizing
economic and political discontent; 2) being able to bring together a broad, socially heterogeneous
electoral constituency in the context of fragmented societies; and 3) having a charismatic leader who
was able to achieve 2 by pursuing 1." (Luna) These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This tension deeply erodes the regime's material foundations and leads citizens to look for better
alternatives for reconciling the economy with politics." (Lynch) This idea of reconciling the
economy and providing equality is the same rhetoric that all of the above mentioned leaders used
while they were running for office. "Most observers agree that various left–wing parties,
movements, and leaders in Latin America share a common commitment to egalitarianism; a
willingness to use the state to balance market forces; and a belief in the importance of popular
participation." (Cameron) When examining the relationship between a population and it's
connection to the state, a clearer picture can be found that sheds light on how the shift to more left
or left of center polities have begun to rise. "In Latin America, there are cases such as Chile,
Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Mexico, in which the identification between nation and state is very
strong. In other countries like Guatemala, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru such identity is weak. The
ethnic aspect lends to play a crucial role in the degree of identification between population and
state.... This also means that those countries that are more advanced in terms of state formation, and
that show a stronger identification between the state and its population, have better conditions for
the establishment of democratic left–wing governments." (Lynch) Ultimately, these dramatic shifts

The Arab Spring, And Neoliberal Deregulation Essay
Essay Three Emergence. Dr. Lelah Behbehanian, Wendy Brown, David Harvey, John Hammond,
Judith Butler, Donna Murch, and Piven et al. would all say the emergence of the "Occupy
Movement" was inspired by the "Arab Spring," the "Obama Autumn" and Neoliberal deregulation
that supports each man for himself, but makes it difficult for most Americans to achieve are
continuing to participate in the American Dream. Each author would say Bank bailouts and
accumulation by redistribution caused many people to lose their homes, (which were a major wealth
building asset for many middle class OWS protestors). The authors would also agree the recession,
stagnant wages, rampant unemployment, lost pensions, along with the world events of "Arab
Spring" and "Obama Autumn" caused the poor and middle class to develop a transformational
common conscious, centered on social and economic inequality, around the world. This
transformation of consciousness brought the poor and middle class together in a show of solidarity
that let Neoliberal policymakers know OWS protesters were not going to take affects of Neo
policies anymore. Thus the emergence of the Occupy Movement. Organization. OWS organized
using an Anarchist Model. In his book "The Anarchism of Occupy Wall Street" Author John
Hammond states "Occupies tactics of anarchism focused the attention of the movement and
occupation of public spaces as a "movement." Hammond says "Occupy protestors endorsed

Paulo Freire : The Great Humanistic And Historical Task Of...
Paulo Freire was one of the many theorist we covered this semester and he was one of them how
refer that the oppressed had to be the oppressors. One statement he made in the reading Freire
(1992) "the great humanistic and historical task of the oppressed" is to "liberate themselves and their
oppressors as well."(1). His statement is very powerful to the point where he is making us think that
the only way to have humanity is that they have to act as the oppressors towards the people who are
oppressing them so that they can see that it 's a problem that both groups have to transformed into a
freedom. "Only power that springs from the weakness of the oppressed will be sufficiently strong to
free both"(1). I also find this quote of him very important to what he means being oppressors against
the group that oppresses them very important because their struggle as the oppressed group is to
make others realize that it 's a problem that has to be fixed before it becomes more of a bigger deal
and more violence methods erupt.
Some of the methods that Freire used for his argument was one being the oppressor. Freire (1992)
says that " Only power that springs from the weakness of the oppressed will be sufficiently strong to
free both" (p.1). Meaning that he refers it as the oppressed group gains the power to oppressed their
oppressors the group will realize how wrong they are and it 's when they start to weaken and come
to peace. He also suggests that in order to gain that freedom they

Essay on War and Peace and Tolstoy's View of History
War and Peace and Tolstoy's View of History
Count Lev Tolstoy wrote abundantly on the philosophical issues that he felt were universally
important. One of the most prolific examples of this is his view of history. This is set out most
clearly and most famously in his largest work, War and Peace. As Tolstoy claimed himself in a
public statement on the work, 'War and Peace is what the author wanted and was able to express in
that form in which it was expressed.' Not only do the themes and incidents in the novel reflect his
theory of history, Tolstoy iterates this in less narrative terms in the twelve chapters of the Second
Epilogue, described as, 'A general discussion on the historians' study of human life, and on the ...

As Tolstoy said, 'What I have expressed in the epilogue of the novel, without quotations and
references, is not the momentary fancy of my mind but the inevitable conclusions of seven years of
work, which I had to do.'
The Second Epilogue can be split up into three sections1, in section one, comprising chapters 1 to 3,
Tolstoy reviews various schools of historiography, in section two, comprising chapters 4 to 7, he
deals with the question of nature and power and what determines the movements of peoples, in
section three, comprising chapters 8 to 12, he discusses the problem of free will.
The first section has been widely disregarded as a limited and anachronistic description of modern
historiography and the logocentric reliance on the presumption that what he feels is important, is
important for self evident reasons. It is often argued that Tolstoy gives an 'artificial' impression of
historians, criticising them for things he is wrong in thinking they have claimed. But what is
important is that through doing this, Tolstoy establishes what is important for him, for his view of
history. He states that in order to explain the movements of people, there

You Mean Anarchism Isn’t All About Chaos? Essay
You Mean Anarchism Isn't All About Chaos? Social activist Lucy Parsons once said, "Anarchism
has but one infallible, unchangeable motto, "Freedom." Freedom to discover any truth, freedom to
develop, to live naturally and fully." Anarchism then, is being able to live and not be ruled by a
government, but instead to live by one's own means in order to increase the good for oneself and
others who share the common belief. Human beings are capable of making the decisions. Instead of
being ruled by one, anarchists live by agreement on decisions that will work for everyone. Like
anarchism, conservatism, liberalism, and libertarianism, have different views as to how one should
be governed or ruled. Conservatism is the belief that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One should not base their relationships off of what a church or law says, one should do what they
feel is right. Why should others have a right to choose whether you can be with someone you love or
not? It is an unjust way to treat others who love the exact same way that everyone else does.
What some people don't understand is that not everyone is alike. We all have different tastes in
clothing, music, or books, but also whom we date. Unlike the other stances, anarchism includes the
belief that one should be in whatever kind of relationship they choose to be in and that it should not
be limited or restricted by "higher power" or what is said to be morally correct. In her essay,
Highleyman states, "Anarchists generally want to get government out of the business of approving
personal relationships, rather than extending such approval to same–sex relationships" (9). Through
this she says that rather than waiting for the government to pass laws that say its okay to marry if
you are gay, anarchists would rather have the government just mind their own business and not
worry about a man marrying a man or a woman marrying another woman. Therefore, anarchy
creates a better society through acceptance and not tolerance. Much like the progression of same–
sex marriage acceptance, technological advancements have also dramatically increased within a
small period of time. According to anarchistic belief, not all

Haymarket Anarchists
he Trial of the Haymarket Anarchists is an iconoclastic account focusing on one of the most
controversial political trials in America. May 4, 1886, a bomb was set off, killing seven Chicago
police officers in the Haymarket Square; ultimately eight anarchists were charged and sentences for
the crime. Ultimately the demise of four were execution, one committed suicide, and the remaining
three were duled life sentences, who would later received a pardon for the conviction. According to
many historical references; the trial in a whole was an injustice, in which the anarchists were
convicted for their political opinions not for the guilt of committing a crime.
Timothy Messer–Kruse argues that the acceptance of the injustice, is wrong; meaning ... Show more

He asserts believably that the prosecution team; accurately accepted the pertinent Illinois law on
conspiracy, regardless of the controversy surrounding it. In addition he also acknowledges that the
prosecution congregated formidable proof of a conspiracy. This incorporates the tossing of the
explosive device, not a conspiracy that simply advised violent actions in striving for a revolution.
Additionly, Musse–Kruse powerfully guards the jury selection process and the verdict dished out by
Judge Joseph E. Gary, in which both were viciously attacked post trial, by Governor Altgeld in his
statement pardoning the surviving anarchists. Messer–Kruse convincingly proves that under the law
at the time, approximately four, and possibly five, of the eight anarchists convicted were guilty as
charged by Judge Joseph E. Gary.
Messer–Kruse introduces the committed anarchists as revolutionaries, but not primarily victims of a
social injustice; however he is unsuccessful in his aim to "get inside their heads and view the world
through their eyes" as he attempted to do (p. 8). Messe–Krusse neglects to discover a linkage from
the eight separate anarchists to the political and cultural views of German workers, interestingly
even given that six of the eight sentenced men were German immigrants. Additionally Musse–Kruse
does not equate relationships between the events he discusses and the recollection of Chicago
history.

Feminist Theory Of Feminism
Introduction
How can we effect change in the world when only half of it is invited to feel welcome to participate
in the conversation ( Watson, 2014). In the feminist perspective, which is an extension of feminism,
there is support of equality for both women and men. Feminism is a belief that women and men
have equal rights and opportunities. There are many different branches in the feminist perspective,
one of the most interesting one is intersectional feminism. Intersectional feminism believes that
experiences of class, gender, and race can not be adequately understood unless we understand that
women of different races have different experiences.
Women of color are told everyday how they have to fit in with the beauty norms that ... Show more

This period was concurrent with the anti–war and civil rights movements. Still persistent issues that
existed from the first wave carried on to the second wave. These issues regarded sexuality and
reproductive rights (2005).
The third wave of feminism started in the mid–1990's and is referred to as a response to the
perceived failures of the second wave. In the third wave we saw a new type of feminist. The new
feminist rejected that the notion of lipstick, high heels and exposed low cut necklines, identified
with male oppression. (Feminist and Intersectionality, 2017). The third wave of feminism also was
the first to emphasize that feminism was more specific to the rights of white women, rather than
women on minorities.
Intersectional feminism is often times called black feminism. It was coined as a movement by
Kimberlé
Crenshaw. The creation of this type of feminism was concurrent with the Civil Rights Movement.
Crenshaw believed that the intersectionality experience of black women was far more powerful than
the sum of their race and sex. She believed that observations that do not take intersectionality, fail to
accurately address how black women are subordinate (DeFrancisco & Palczewski, 2007).
Intersectional feminism argues that gender, race and class are intersecting oppressions ( Jones e.t al,
quoting Crenshaw, 2013). Intersectional feminism allows us to understand that while some women
are subject to sexism, some women are greater affected because

The Theory Of Power And Leadership Ideas
Ideas are beliefs and desires constructed in organized pattern with its creation, components and
impact that define the political structure and bind the ruling authority in a set of complying
characteristics of that idea. There are unexplained varieties of Ideas – great ideas, scientific and
moral ideas, realist and fantastic ideas, political, economic or religious ideas. Democracy, power,
freedom and rights, citizenship and protest, social justice and equality are all ideas based on which
institutions make policies and rules. As abstract and non–specific element of thought it may be, it
forms essential bases of formational philosophy and politics. It is important to understand, in

In today's world, it has to be admitted that more and more power is being given to the people and the
hypothesis that power belongs to the people, and they govern themselves has undoubtedly
established liberal democracy as the most appropriate form of governance. Ideas of equality, justice
and freedom are secured by democratic regimes and therefore over centuries, from French
revolution to Arab springs in 2010. Today's governments are liberal but modern democratic
territories. They preach supremacy and freedom of individuals provides fundamental rights, rule of
law and security but at the same time the system representing people takes the leading role. Modern
states have to incorporate various interests, requirements and political requirements and thus look at
collective interests idealizing stability, international image, and maintaining balanced political
structure.
The constitutional framework of a state bases its policies, decisions on the ideas and ideologies
enshrined by the supreme law of the land– constitution. All political, social and economic laws,
policies are formulated due to the ideological guidelines and principals inculcated by states. The
ideas of freedom, security, justice, rule of law, peace, protest, etc. are the building blocks of
governance, though ever changing in their meaning. Berlin, discussing J.S. Mill, distinguishes

An enlightened and benevolent anarchism, such as expressed by the terms, "anarcho–pacifism" /
"anarcho–socialism," is, in my view, the only anarchism that can ever work. To arrive at an anarcho–
pacifist / anarcho–socialist society, we as a global community must undergo great psychological
transformation. Only then can anarchism become a practical ideology for the world.
However, we as individuals need not wait for all humanity to find anarchy before we can have
anarchy for ourselves. We can manifest anarchy within our own circles of being, individually, here
and now; thus becoming individually liberated.
The anarchist truly has the best political deal. Whereas the fascist depends upon a fascist
government to have fascism, the state socialist upon a socialistic government to have socialism, the
democrat upon a democratic government to have democracy, and the libertarian capitalist upon a
libertarian government to have laissez faire capitalism, the anarchist can choose to have anarchy,
here and now, without any government.
Anarchy, the way I see it, is a personal choice, depending on nothing but one's own true will. If one
wants anarchy for oneself, one can have it, regardless of the political system society has. All the

Benefits Of The Individual Environment And The Team...
The idea to succeed can only go so far, it is the paths chosen that can make the end result a success,
or a failure. We all want to succeed, but as a leader you have to determine what approach to make.
Shall I take on this idea alone, or should I create a group to assist me, whatever it takes to succeed,
right? Some ideas can be accomplished by an individual alone, but usually bigger ideas need a team
to see it through. Working in a team environment can have its drawbacks, but it also has many
benefits. In this paper I am going to provide research to support the setbacks and benefits of both the
individual environment and the team environment. I found that what an individual may lack is a
team's gain, vice versa. The important result is the success achieved by either a team, or an
individual. In the International Journal of Psychology, the authors described a team as being
"collectivism." In the journal article Presence of Others and Task Performance in Japan and the
United States: A Laboratory Investigation, the research was not only testing the effects of the
different cultures on job productivity and job quality, but they were also focusing on the effects of
working in a group versus working individually. In their words, they were comparing collectivism

Analysis Of ' The Raid ' By Leo Tolstoy
While reading "The Raid" by Leo Tolstoy, one is instantly struck by the strong contrast between the
peaceful nature scenes and the violent battle scenes. One minute the sounds of crickets and frogs are
charmingly echoing through the night, and the next you can hear the "clang of a heavy gun" and the
"sound of bayonets touching one another" (Tolstoy 20). In one scene, the generals and majors stand
watching the gory battle below, yet they continue to discuss the beautiful nature around them as if
nothing else could possibly be worth their attention (Tolstoy 25). However, upon closer readings, it
becomes evident that the war and nature scenes are not as separate as they seem. As the story
progresses, the two begin to weave together, until distinguishing them is nearly impossible. Indeed,
this subtly merger can be seen throughout multiple scenes as the story evolves. From the start,
nature and war are both extremely prominent in the story. But, they are presented separately from
each other. The best example of this is on page thirteen. "The sun had done half its journey, and cast
its hot rays through the glowing air onto the dry earth...the motionless air seemed full of transparent
dust, the heat was becoming unbearable" (Tolstoy 13). This entire paragraph describes the nature all
around the marching soldiers. Then, it is followed by a separate paragraph: "Half–way on their
march the troops reached a small stream and halted. The soldiers stacked their muskets and rushed

King White Church
Throughout the Civil Rights movements during the 1950s and 1960s, Martin Luther King and his
followers were surrounded by hate. However, several different groups and organizations made an
attempt to reach out to their cause in an attempt to fight for that which was morally correct. Despite
all of the organizations that proclaimed King's teachings, there was one organization that surprised
King by their lack of support. This was the White Church. In King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail,"
King is very disappointed in the white church because they want the black population to wait so

King states that the White Church is part of the movement that is, " more devoted to order rather
than justice" (358). What King means by this, is that the White Church would rather see the country
be morally incorrect and have a system of operations that infringed on a specific group of peoples'
rights just for the sake of having order. King later stated, "Law and order exist to establish justice
and when they fail they become dangerously structured dams blocking the flow of social progress"
(358). The point that King was trying to get across in this statement is that there are laws and certain
expectations put on people for the sole purpose of having justice and peace in the country. And for
the laws that are enacted to be completely against justice is just plain absurdity that will block the
progress of the country until the problem is fixed. King makes another valid point concerning the
White Church whenever he states, "I have watched white churches stand on the sideline and merely
mouth pious irrelevancies and sanctimonious trivialities" (362). In his statement, King is directly
criticizing the actions of the White Church. He is calling the White Church out and saying that they

Individualism And Negolectivism In The Mount Everest...
Decision–making skill is a top priority in management as it creates a culture of clarity by allowing
one to determine the problem and come to a resolution that is beneficial to the staff and
organization. This skill was of vital importance in the Mount Everest simulation. During the
simulation, our team was clueless and unaware that we would face harsh weather condition during
the climb that would cause major health issues. As a result, our teams were faced with unexpected
events causing crises that were so sudden and overwhelming that they required immediate response,
limiting our team decision–making processes throughout the simulation when such situation would
arise. This fundamental issue of occurrence that we did not reasonably plan for resulted with
different team members at different camps on the mountain. Within this environment of disturbance,
the idea of individualism approach acted as an obstacle for change and problem resolution which
had a moderating effect on group performance loss.
Management Research Evidence
The first scholarly article explores into the many potential of individualism in comparison with
collectivism in an organizational setting. As current research suggests that individualistic ideals
should not be given opportunities because they encourage destructive conflict and opportunism due
to their self–governing attribute, whereas collectivism is more sought–after as they initiate
cooperation and productivity. The article argues that

Essay about Small Change
Small Change What determines a movement? Malcolm Gladwell defines what pushes a movement
to make a difference. He analyzes the concept of "strong ties" and "weak ties" and how these
relationships affect an individual's willpower and determination to help a cause. Gregory Orr puts
these ideas into context in his memoir, "Return to Hayneville", in which he recounts his experience
and involvement in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Malcolm Gladwell's "Small Change:
Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted", focuses, in particular, on the civil rights movement

opinions of social and political emancipations are given a real world setting, as ... Show more

Orr's experience helped him learn about himself and primarily helps an individual discover the
importance of living. Gladwell would classify Orr as someone who shared no relationship with the
cause and only joined because because he wanted to find himself in the midst of chaos not
necessarily because he was passionate about the civil rights movement. Gladwell describes the
movement of sit ins across the south as a "fever". Orr found himself caught up in the contagion, he
endured the beatings and the injustice the same as everyone else but his motives were not set for
civil rights, he realized this when he was taken and held captive, "Even as I sank into depression and
brooded in the stifling heat of that jail–barn, I was learning that I wanted to live," (Orr, 223). When
he was released Orr left without alerting the COFO office because he felt ashamed. It was easy for
him to walk away from the cause for him to walk away from the cause because he as he left he
wasn't leaving anything or anyone behind. Gladwell's explains that "weak ties seldom lead to high–
risk activism" (Gladwell, 137). In Gregory Orr's essay, "Return to Hayneville", published by The
Virginia Quarterly Review, Orr revisited the place of his abduction by armed vigilantes in Alabama
as a Civil Rights worker in 1965. Even though the events of this essay take place in 1965, for Orr it

Anarchism and Elitism in the United States
The United States was founded with the vision for freedom. Oppression had been experienced by
our founding fathers and they knew it was absolutely necessary to provide structure to prevent
oppressive governments in the future. The solution was a limited government that bordered the edge
of anarchy, yet just enough structure to have order and civility. The design was to stay far from
elitism so no government could control the people and allow the people to control the government.
Today's current political climate allows us to take one of two sides: Democrat or Republican. The
Democrats believe the Republicans have it all wrong because they are avoiding the opportunities for
government to take care of the people. The Republicans think the Democrats have it all wrong
because they are destroying the economy and power of America by redistributing the wealth to those
who have not legitimately earned it.
While we have been busy feuding between the two parties we have not even noticed the transition
our country has taken. Today we are so far from the Constitution and we are now skirting the edge
of tyranny. Throughout the years, political scientist and philosophers have expanded on a wide array
ideologies, or types of governments that can be organized. These types of government are for the
most part, equally limited. Therefore, a state being governed under the principles of liberalism does
not usually practice socialism. These political ideologies have played an essential role in

was young, so Lily has some idea of what she was like by pictures and of course T.Ray. This
evidence includes a metaphor that suggests that like the workers Lily quickly felt the absence of her
mother. Lily grew up without a motherly figure which is why she is struggling so much, T.Ray could

starts to get more of a feel of heart towards Zach. This might be nothing considering Lily doesn 't
really know what love is. After the passing of her mother, Lily didn 't receive any love from T.Ray
and Rosaleen hadn 't know much about the subject either. CHARACTERIZATION: Lily " I looked

Individualism Vs. Collectivism In Ayn Rand's Anthem
For the last century, individualism vs. collectivism has been a political conflict in America. What is
collectivism and individualism you might ask, well collectivism is briefly defined as a group of
people working together to give priority over individuals. On the other hand, individualism can be
defined as a theory of favoring freedom over collective individuals and working to benefit his/her
own self. Although the two seem very different, they also share many similar characteristics. In the
novel Anthem, the main character lives in a society based from collectivism. The men and women
are unable to choose what jobs they are given when they reach the working age, the Scholars choose
their jobs for them. These Scholars are a group who are looked up to because they are the only
people who are allowed to come up with new ideas for their society. Everyone else in the society
accepts the job they're given and works this jobs for the rest of their life. The jobs in their society are
what is viewed as the people's identity. People with the same job are viewed as a whole instead of
instead of individuals. Individuality is lost in this society because groups are viewed as a primary
entity. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

new career if the one they have doesn't satisfy them. People are individually known and not

Protests: A Social Movement
Martin Luther King JR stated in Why We Can't Wait that "A social movement that only moves
people is merely a revolt. A movement that changes both people and institutions is a revolution."
The thought behind this quote is that in order for a social movement to officially be a social
movement or a social revolution, it has to change the people involved, and also the institution.
Martin Luther King JR was infamous for his legacy left on the black civil rights movement, a
mastermind behind bringing the country together to start a movement for equal rights of blacks and
whites.

In SLURP's case, the idea that people may not show up for said events being set up for the
organization. Doug McAdam, author of Freedom Summer, states that there's three factors that
explain why individuals do and do not show up to events and protests. The first characteristic is
Biographical Availability. McAdam spells this out, saying that "Students, especially those drawn
from privileged classes, are simply free, to a unique degree, of constraints that tend to make
activism too time consuming or risky for other groups to engage in" (McAdam, 68). In terms of
SLURP, the people who have time to dedicate to the social movement helps determine why
individuals do and do not show up to events. Between after school jobs and activities and academic
work, some people do not have time to lend to a cause or a movement. Since the targeted audience is
college age students enrolled in college or university, this can make attracting members of the social
movement difficult. The second characteristic is referred to as Attitudes and Values. "...They shared
in the generalized optimism, idealism, and sense of potency that was the subjective heritage of their
class and generation" (McAdam, 69). This excerpt talks about how the individuals involved in the
Freedom Summer which consisted of civil rights movements in Mississippi all shared the same
values. To be involved and unified in a movement, there needs to be similar values and attitudes
being shared between all persons involved. Whether it be religious or moral values, it's a shared
constant between all members actively participating in the social movement. The third characteristic
is known as a Social Relationship, which is often regarded as the most important factor of the three.
"Rather, their involvement in the project seems to have been mediated through some combination of
personal relationships and/or organizational ties"

The Rise Of The Civil Rights Movement
In 1960, there were tremendous of social ferment that was responsible for agitation and protest.
Through direct protest, many African Americans, women, and homosexuals were able to gain
recognition and break down the walls of discrimination and segregations. Out of the numerous
elements that arose in the 1960s, there are three movements that truly affected the American society.
Firstly, the rise of the civil rights movement was greatly influenced by racial discrimination of
colored people in the South. Secondly, the women's movement aimed to convince the society that
women are capable of achieving and maintaining higher waged job like males. Lastly, the gay rights
movement aimed to gain acceptance and stop discrimination of homosexuality. The most significant
effect on the development of American society was the women's movement and how they expanded
their economic and political opportunities. The common goal among African Americans, women's,
and homosexuals was to obtain their equal rights as citizens of America and to desegregate all the
boundaries between white and black population.
The civil rights movement was one of the main elements that were responsible for agitation and
protest that greatly expanded in the 1960s. This social movement "originated among black
Americans in the South who faced racial discrimination and segregation, or the separation of whites
and blacks, in almost every aspect of their lives" ("Protests in the 1960s," 3). There was constant

Dictatorship Vs Anarchy
Which is more effective and beneficial to the members of a society; Anarchy or Dictatorship?
Anarchy allows individuals to have complete freedom; however, there is not a government or ruler
to help protect the citizens of the society. In an anarchy, each citizen retains complete control and
responsibility over their life, and they must defend their property and belongings themselves without
any governmental help. In addition, there is complete chaos during a period of anarchy due to the
fact that there is not an individual stopping the unjust actions that an individual may be committing.
In contrast, a dictatorship controls all individuals and laws within a society, but the state that

This scene shows how consequences must proceed following an individual's crime. Creon yells
"...neither she nor her sister should escape the utmost sentence–death..." (Sophocles 1215). This
creates a sense of accountability that one must have because it vividly shows how one's actions,
breaking the law, will cause severe consequences. Then when William J. Clinton gave his speech he
stated that "It is one thing to believe the federal government has too much power [but]....it is quite
another to break the law..." (Clinton 482). When William Clinton states this he is agreeing with
Creon that a person should not act upon an action if it is breaking the law; however, if they do then
there will be reparations for that person. Both Creon's summoning speech to Antigone and William
Clinton's statement correlate with each other because they think that an individual should not act
upon an action that is breaking the law no matter what it is. Overall, the thesis is supported by this
because a citizen should not go against laws that are set, but if they do then it will lead to

The Doctrine Of The State
In this presentation of his notion of the state he ends up putting forward things which inspires some
critics to accuse him of having totalitarian leanings. Things such as his assertion of the necessity of
the state for humanity, his strong belief in an overriding spirit to a society, his connecting of freedom
to reason and social order, are controversial notions. His allegiance to positive freedom brings attack
from supporters of negative freedom, his notions of differing states for suiting differing societies
appears anti–democratic and imperialistic, and his preference for a constitutional monarch seems
unusual. It is these matters and others which have brought merited and less merited critique and
objection to his work.
It is the case that Hegel does treat the state as essential. In part this is due to his notion of positive
freedom and his notion of the state as a means for actualizing a collective human will. It is also in
part related to his preference for both the duty of ancient Athens and the Kantian style of ethics
guided by individual reason; for which he tries to find a synthesis. In this it seems that he is aiming
for a unification of collective and individual spirit and freedom. Now some of the statements he
makes, such as "it is a false and dangerous assumption that only the people possess reason and
insight" and "a state is a matter of trained intelligence", and things like insisting the need for a single
symbolic ruler, do seem to rather statist sounding

The Turtle By Kay Ryan
Throughout the course of history, human nature has embraced conformity and being average.
However, human nature expresses itself in a variety of ways and these differences make everyone an
individual. Civil rights activists have recently made a strong effort to encourage people to embrace
and express their differences. The recent push for a more open society has resulted in both backlash
and acceptance. Kay Ryan explores what being an individual means and the choices we can and
cannot make about ourselves in her poem "The Turtle". She uses the turtle, an often ill–suited
creature in regard to survival, to contradict the common misconception that people can choose their
sexuality. Kay Ryan, an open lesbian, often uses poetry to express her position on particular subjects
in regard to sexual orientation.
From the first line of the poem, Kay Ryan sets up her argument. The speaker poses an interesting
question, "who would be a turtle who could help it?" Alternatively, the speaker's question could also
be worded as who would be gay if they could help it, because of the history behind being openly
gay, even in a progressive country like America. American society often vilifies people for their
sexuality. Teenagers find themselves homeless and adults without jobs, despite what any law says.
So, if one could choose to be somebody else why would they then choose to be treated as sub–
human? The logic and the argument brings it to the conclusion that no one would ever choose being

The Pros And Cons Of Freedom In America
America has been shaped in many different ways and continues be shaped daily. America is
constantly changing and facing new challenges. However, authors of By the People have four ideas
liberty, self–rule, limited government, and equality that they believe are the leading factors in how
America is shaped. These ideas help elaborate on what makes America a strong and withstanding
country. These ideas are the base of America's politics and what makes us a unique country. These
four ideas are constantly being debated between politicians on what the different meanings are.
Firstly, liberty can be defined as the equal freedom from oppression and restriction in a society.
Freedom is what the United States was designed to give most people however it is still being
worked on in present day. Freedom is wanted for all American and is the essential focus in this
country. There are two different types of liberty negative and positive liberty. Both negative and
positive liberties can be debated on what is best for American society. According to Morone and
Kersh, negative liberty can be defined as the freedom from the absence of restraint, (12). Negative
liberty position is for the freedom from restriction of government on what the individual can or
should do in society. The only restriction to a person should be if a person wants to harm another
individual. Conservatives and libertarians are usually in favor of negative liberty. Positive liberty
belief is that there should be freedom

Anarchism is the belief in the demolition of any form of government and said government is to be

small anarchist movement to cripple the ones in power. This would be able to develop fear in the
country which would lead the leaders to develop laws which condemns individuals for having
beliefs which goes against that of the governments. In one instance this is seen during the Cold War

Mujers Fibres Research Paper
The anarchist/women's rights organization Mujeres Libres was a pioneering force in the egalitarian
movement. The organization faced much backlash during its existence solely because it was an
organization of anarchist women during a time when patriarchy and nationalism were the
dominating norms. Therefore, the group had to overcome many obstacles put in place by Spanish
society to prove themselves as both a women's rights and an anarchist organization. Mujeres Libres
used this unique intersection between anarchism and women's rights to bring a distinctive and
specialized approach to equality that proved to be effective for giving a voice to silenced anarchist
women.
Though political fluctuation was abundant in early 1900s Spain, one constant within the society was
its predominantly patriarchal nature. It was a society in which power was not associated with
women, because women were not viewed as equals to men. Consequently, women lived very
restricted lives; their place was limited to the household and their was worth determined by whether
or not they were married or by how submissive they acted towards men. Because of the society's
expectations that women should assume roles within the home, there was a vast discrepancy
between the educational levels of men and women. Higher education was exceedingly rare among
Spanish women and female illiteracy rates reached nearly 70%. ... Show more content on

How Is Anarres A Utopian Society
To answer the question, How is the utopian society Anarres structured, one can attack it at many
ways. First one can look at the cultural context of the time period in which the novel was written.
LeGuin wrote The Dispossessed in 1974. One can argue that the community of Anarres was in
inspired by the social movements of the late 1960's and early seventies. The civil rights movement,
the feminist movement, the environmental movement, and the 60's counter culture or "hippie"
values are all reflected in the culture and society of Anarres.

This relationship between the individual and society is later recognized as the bureaucratic machine

The Civil Rights Movement During The 1960 ' S
The American South in the 1960 's and Ancient Thebes both had a rigid social and legal system that
did not effectively and legitimately represent the majority of its citizens. In both eras, an antihero
rose up to defy the establish system. Dr. King, in the 1960 's, protested unjust laws and was jailed
and viewed as an antagonist. Similarly, in Ancient Thebes, Antigone is sentenced to death for doing
what she believes is right, regardless of the law. If Dr. King failed, he stood to lose, in addition to his
life, his reputation as someone who wanted true change for all African Americans. Furthermore,
future generations of colored people would have to endure the same injustice that he was protesting
against. Also, if his nonviolent ways failed there were people ready to take the civil rights movement
in a violent direction. If Antigone 's defiance had failed, her brother will never find peace in the
afterlife, and Thebes will never find unity and solace after its civil war. Additionally, she too could
lose her life for her outward defiance. Therefore, both Dr. King 's nonviolent resistance, along with
writing his letter from Birmingham Jail, and Antigone 's violation of Kreon 's edict are justified by
what they stood to lose if they did not take their respective actions. Dr. King choose to address more

The Screwmen's Benevolent Association, The Knights of Labor and the Farmers Alliance are a few
of the leading labor organizations in Texas. Developed as the political and human resource
representation for many of Texas' post civil war laborers, these organizations invested considerable
time and funding in advocating for the concerns of the working class. Established socialist
communities were natural supporters for unionization based on their beliefs in cooperation for the
greater good. Within a transformative decade for Texas workers, the Knights of Labor reached the
pinnacle of its influence, failed a railroad strike in 1886 and eventually transformed into an agrarian
and mechanics' organization. (A&M and Reid 2009) The growing influence of the Knights of Labor
improved the standing of socialists by extension. In reality, the union was not socialist organization
by definition. However, Texas socialists support and political gamesmanship contributed heavily to
the growth and development of the Knights of Labor. (Texas A&M University Press 2010)
Advocacy for Texas laborers and support for the civil rights movement became the focus of

Gandhi Case Study

  • 1. Gandhi Case Study Gandhi was born in suppressed India in 1869, which was four years after the end of the American Civil War. Gandhi studied law in London, England. Gandhi liked that the English respected the law. Gandhi disapproved of India's caste system. What made Gandhi's Nonviolent Movement Work? Gandhi used at least three different tactics to make nonviolence work: disciplined civil disobedience, accepting jail time, and embracing the enemy. One nonviolent tactic that Gandhi used to make nonviolence work was disciplined civil disobedience. According to Webb Miller, "The marchers were disciplined by native police who beat them with metal pipes" (Document B). Civil Disobedience allowed the Nonviolent Movement to work because the marchers were willing to die for change. Since they were willing to sacrifice themselves to get independence tales me that independence was really important to India. Even though the marchers got beaten up badly, they did not fight back. By not fighting back, India was getting closer to get freedom. Webb Miller was there when the marchers were getting hurt. He wrote down everything he saw and shared with the world. By sharing with the world, people put pressure to Britain because now the world know what Britain is doing to India. This helped India to get independence because it hurt Britain's reputation. One nonviolent tactic that Gandhi used to make nonviolence work was by accepting jail time. When Gandhi was in South Africa, he went to prison, "In his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Individualism or Collectivism in Society Essay Debate Question: Which ideological group has had the greatest impact on modern society? Individualism or Collectivism. Terms: Individualism–> when you value the freedom and worth of the individual, sometimes over the security and harmony of the group or a belief in the importance of the individual and the virtue of self–reliance and personal independence Collectivism–> is basically when you think that values and the goals of the group and the common good over the goals of any one individual are the most beneficial. It stresses human interdependence and the importance of a collective, rather than the importance of separate individuals Ideological–> the way we view the world and other people through our beliefs and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If we all work together to help people out we can get a lot of ideas put together and do a lot of good for the group. In Canada we are a mostly collective country especially next to the states. We have universal health care which widely helps out people who wouldn't otherwise be able to see a doctor or dentist without it. If the government helps people out then the standard of living would increase. Poverty could be diminished, health problems could be cured, and people would be able to afford leisurely activities putting money back into the government to help others out. Health care would be free and widely available to all to use. No having to pay for expensive prescriptions and doctors visits cutting back on the spread of diseases and sick people. Public property is used and is managed by a collective to benefit everyone in the community. All kids can go to school no matter their parents financial state giving them a chance to finish and go on to post secondary and get a good paying job. In Saudi Arabia and Sweden schooling is paid for by the government from kindergarten all the way to post secondary education. It benefits everyone because everyone can go to school regardless of their wealth. It inspires people to get a good education and a good job. Of course you have to have the marks to get into post secondary but its paid for. Studies have shown that people living in a collective society have lower crime rates than those who are living in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Crucial Role Of Feminism In Mainstream Media The mainstream media, such as national news broadcasting stations, magazines, and social media sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, play a crucial role in the promotion and encouragement of feminism. According to Andy Zeisler in a Quick Take article in Time magazine, "Feminism, for better and for worse, has become trendy," (Zeisler np). According to the beliefs expressed in an article by Debra Baker in the NWSA Journal, media has mistreated feminism. She claims, "...the media portray [active, assertive women]– has turned all "feminists" into a frightening fringe element," (Beck 139). In all honesty, the media has portrayed feminism with a negative connotation, but this is a fair portrayal. Consequently, feminism has become a distasteful ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By definition in the Meriam–Webster Dictionary, equality means, "the quality or state of being equal or of the same measure, quantity, amount, or number as another," ("Equality" np). On the other hand, equity is defined as, "justice according to natural law or right; specifically: freedom from bias or favoritism; dealing fairly and equally with all concerned," ("Equity" np). Most feminists, without even realizing their error, are fighting for equity instead of fighting for equality. With reference to the SGBA e–Learning Resource: Rising to the Challenge, we can understand a direct distinction between equality and equity. "Equity, as we have seen, involves trying to understand and give people what they need to enjoy full, healthy lives," (Clow np). From context, the term "equity" should be associated with giving people what they need for a happy lifestyle. "Equality, in contrast, aims to ensure that everyone gets the same things in order to enjoy full, healthy lives. Like equity, equality aims to promote fairness and justice, but it can only work if everyone starts from the same place and needs the same things," (Clow np). It is impossible to provide everyone in the world, male and female, the same circumstances. This has become a challenge for those who associate themselves with finding equality for all. It is physical impossible because we are born in different circumstances, with incomparable talents and strengths. Barbara Clow, Yvonne Hanson, and Jennifer Bernier, authors of the module "Distinguish between Equality and Equity," prove an important point as they contrast equality and equity. They use an analogy of the failure of providing equality to competitors in a race at a track meet. "The concept of equality would have us treat the runners in exactly the same way, ensuring that they all start at the same place on the track. But we know that runners in the inside ... • 7. The Environmental Issue From Hell Ibsen Analysis Bill McKibben in "The Environmental Issue from Hell" and Rachel Carson in "The Obligation to Endure" both believe that environmental issues are some of the most important issues facing mankind today. In "The Environmental Issue from Hell," McKibben argues that Americans need to take a moral approach to solving the global warming problem. He is passionate about the problems associated with global warming, but he fails to provide concrete support. Carson argues in "The Obligation to Endure" that humans have ignorantly tampered with the delicate balance of nature through the use of pesticides. She presents a valid argument; however, it is weakened by her failure to cite her sources and her sole reliance on her own credibility as a biologist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He says, "So perhaps we need some symbols to get us started, some places to sharpen the debate and rally ourselves to action." He claims that sports utility vehicles are one of the main blamable symbols for global warming. He goes as far as to say "SUVs are more than mere symbols. They are a major part of the problem..." McKibben opposes SUVs because he claims they are simply unnecessary, not fuel efficient, and do not provide any additional safety compared to average cars. He claims, "SUVs essentially are machines for burning fossil fuel that just happen to also move you and your stuff around. But what makes them such a perfect symbol is the brute fact that they are simply unnecessary." He fails to back this claim with evidence which weakens his argument because it appears to be biased. Furthermore, he extends the symbol of the SUV to American consumerism. McKibben claims that SUVs are "...the perfect metaphor for a heedless, supersized society." He strays from his thesis at this point because consumerism is unrelated to the morality involved in global warming. In "The Obligation to Endure," Carson does not use symbols like McKibben does; instead, she directly assigns the blame to humans for the environmental issues associated with nature's balancing cycle. She claims that through pesticides and insecticides, importation of new species, and failure to follow the advice of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Margaret Sanger Vs Betty Friedan Throughout history, leaders of political and social movements have designed slogans and catchphrases to mobilize ordinary citizens into political and social activists. Historically, activists such as Nelson Mandela, Mohandas Gandhi, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and countless others have, in their speeches and writings, created a perfect pairing of words that persists in the mind of the listener. Two such activists of the Twentieth Century were Margaret Sanger and Betty Friedan. Friedan and Sanger greatly influenced the women's rights movement; despite both being feminists, however, their personal beliefs in terms of other civil rights movements often fell at opposite ends of the spectrum. Both Friedan and Sanger popularized phrases which empowered their respective followers and similar activists to push back against a system designed to repress them; the phrases that the two activists used, however, reflected their different brands of activism and revealed their differences of opinion on who mattered both for and in the Women's Rights Movement. : Sanger with the phrase "birth control" and Friedan with the term "feminine mystique." Betty Friedan, who lived from 1921–2006, constructed her activism through her writing. She wrote for trade unions and magazines, and later, at the age of 42, published her best known work The Feminine Mystique. This book stirred up a following among urban, white, middle–class American women who felt that their male counterparts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Essay On Latin America Turns To The Left Latin America Turns to The Left Within the last 20 years many Latin American nations have changed course from a neoliberal polity to one that is sided more to the left wing spectrum. "A significant part of Latin America is governed today by political movements and governments that call themselves 'leftist' or are classified as such by external observers." (Luna) Furthermore, the shift in direction politically has been classified by 3 factors; "1) opposing incumbents by mobilizing economic and political discontent; 2) being able to bring together a broad, socially heterogeneous electoral constituency in the context of fragmented societies; and 3) having a charismatic leader who was able to achieve 2 by pursuing 1." This tension deeply erodes the regime's material foundations and leads citizens to look for better alternatives for reconciling the economy with politics." (Lynch) This idea of reconciling the economy and providing equality is the same rhetoric that all of the above mentioned leaders used while they were running for office. "Most observers agree that various left–wing parties, movements, and leaders in Latin America share a common commitment to egalitarianism; a willingness to use the state to balance market forces; and a belief in the importance of popular participation." (Cameron) When examining the relationship between a population and it's connection to the state, a clearer picture can be found that sheds light on how the shift to more left or left of center polities have begun to rise. "In Latin America, there are cases such as Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Mexico, in which the identification between nation and state is very strong. In other countries like Guatemala, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru such identity is weak. The ethnic aspect lends to play a crucial role in the degree of identification between population and state.... This also means that those countries that are more advanced in terms of state formation, and that show a stronger identification between the state and its population, have better conditions for the establishment of democratic left–wing governments." (Lynch) Ultimately, these dramatic shifts ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. The Arab Spring, And Neoliberal Deregulation Essay Essay Three Emergence. Dr. Lelah Behbehanian, Wendy Brown, David Harvey, John Hammond, Judith Butler, Donna Murch, and Piven et al. would all say the emergence of the "Occupy Movement" was inspired by the "Arab Spring," the "Obama Autumn" and Neoliberal deregulation that supports each man for himself, but makes it difficult for most Americans to achieve are continuing to participate in the American Dream. Each author would say Bank bailouts and accumulation by redistribution caused many people to lose their homes, (which were a major wealth building asset for many middle class OWS protestors). The authors would also agree the recession, stagnant wages, rampant unemployment, lost pensions, along with the world events of "Arab Spring" and "Obama Autumn" caused the poor and middle class to develop a transformational common conscious, centered on social and economic inequality, around the world. This transformation of consciousness brought the poor and middle class together in a show of solidarity that let Neoliberal policymakers know OWS protesters were not going to take affects of Neo policies anymore. Thus the emergence of the Occupy Movement. Organization. OWS organized using an Anarchist Model. In his book "The Anarchism of Occupy Wall Street" Author John Hammond states "Occupies tactics of anarchism focused the attention of the movement and occupation of public spaces as a "movement." • 15. Paulo Freire : The Great Humanistic And Historical Task Of... Paulo Freire was one of the many theorist we covered this semester and he was one of them how refer that the oppressed had to be the oppressors. One statement he made in the reading Freire (1992) "the great humanistic and historical task of the oppressed" is to "liberate themselves and their oppressors as well."(1). His statement is very powerful to the point where he is making us think that the only way to have humanity is that they have to act as the oppressors towards the people who are oppressing them so that they can see that it 's a problem that both groups have to transformed into a freedom. "Only power that springs from the weakness of the oppressed will be sufficiently strong to free both"(1). I also find this quote of him very important to what he means being oppressors against the group that oppresses them very important because their struggle as the oppressed group is to make others realize that it 's a problem that has to be fixed before it becomes more of a bigger deal and more violence methods erupt. Some of the methods that Freire used for his argument was one being the oppressor. Freire (1992) says that " Only power that springs from the weakness of the oppressed will be sufficiently strong to free both" (p.1). Meaning that he refers it as the oppressed group gains the power to oppressed their oppressors the group will realize how wrong they are and it 's when they start to weaken and come to peace. • 17. Essay on War and Peace and Tolstoy's View of History War and Peace and Tolstoy's View of History Count Lev Tolstoy wrote abundantly on the philosophical issues that he felt were universally important. One of the most prolific examples of this is his view of history. This is set out most clearly and most famously in his largest work, War and Peace. As Tolstoy claimed himself in a public statement on the work, 'War and Peace is what the author wanted and was able to express in that form in which it was expressed.' Not only do the themes and incidents in the novel reflect his theory of history, Tolstoy iterates this in less narrative terms in the twelve chapters of the Second Epilogue, described as, 'A general discussion on the historians' study of human life, and on the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As Tolstoy said, 'What I have expressed in the epilogue of the novel, without quotations and references, is not the momentary fancy of my mind but the inevitable conclusions of seven years of work, which I had to do.' The Second Epilogue can be split up into three sections1, in section one, comprising chapters 1 to 3, Tolstoy reviews various schools of historiography, in section two, comprising chapters 4 to 7, he deals with the question of nature and power and what determines the movements of peoples, in section three, comprising chapters 8 to 12, he discusses the problem of free will. The first section has been widely disregarded as a limited and anachronistic description of modern historiography and the logocentric reliance on the presumption that what he feels is important, is important for self evident reasons. It is often argued that Tolstoy gives an 'artificial' impression of historians, criticising them for things he is wrong in thinking they have claimed. But what is important is that through doing this, Tolstoy establishes what is important for him, for his view of history. He states that in order to explain the movements of people, there ... • 19. You Mean Anarchism Isn’t All About Chaos? Essay You Mean Anarchism Isn't All About Chaos? Social activist Lucy Parsons once said, "Anarchism has but one infallible, unchangeable motto, "Freedom." Freedom to discover any truth, freedom to develop, to live naturally and fully." Anarchism then, is being able to live and not be ruled by a government, but instead to live by one's own means in order to increase the good for oneself and others who share the common belief. Human beings are capable of making the decisions. Instead of being ruled by one, anarchists live by agreement on decisions that will work for everyone. Like anarchism, conservatism, liberalism, and libertarianism, have different views as to how one should be governed or ruled. Conservatism is the belief that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One should not base their relationships off of what a church or law says, one should do what they feel is right. Why should others have a right to choose whether you can be with someone you love or not? It is an unjust way to treat others who love the exact same way that everyone else does. What some people don't understand is that not everyone is alike. We all have different tastes in clothing, music, or books, but also whom we date. Unlike the other stances, anarchism includes the belief that one should be in whatever kind of relationship they choose to be in and that it should not be limited or restricted by "higher power" or what is said to be morally correct. In her essay, Highleyman states, "Anarchists generally want to get government out of the business of approving personal relationships, rather than extending such approval to same–sex relationships" (9). Through this she says that rather than waiting for the government to pass laws that say its okay to marry if you are gay, anarchists would rather have the government just mind their own business and not worry about a man marrying a man or a woman marrying another woman. Therefore, anarchy creates a better society through acceptance and not tolerance. Much like the progression of same– sex marriage acceptance, technological advancements have also dramatically increased within a small period of time. According to anarchistic belief, not all ... May 4, 1886, a bomb was set off, killing seven Chicago police officers in the Haymarket Square; ultimately eight anarchists were charged and sentences for the crime. Ultimately the demise of four were execution, one committed suicide, and the remaining three were duled life sentences, who would later received a pardon for the conviction. According to many historical references; the trial in a whole was an injustice, in which the anarchists were convicted for their political opinions not for the guilt of committing a crime. Timothy Messer–Kruse argues that the acceptance of the injustice, is wrong; meaning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He asserts believably that the prosecution team; accurately accepted the pertinent Illinois law on conspiracy, regardless of the controversy surrounding it. In addition he also acknowledges that the prosecution congregated formidable proof of a conspiracy. This incorporates the tossing of the explosive device, not a conspiracy that simply advised violent actions in striving for a revolution. Additionly, Musse–Kruse powerfully guards the jury selection process and the verdict dished out by Judge Joseph E. Gary, in which both were viciously attacked post trial, by Governor Altgeld in his statement pardoning the surviving anarchists. Messer–Kruse convincingly proves that under the law at the time, approximately four, and possibly five, of the eight anarchists convicted were guilty as charged by Judge Joseph E. Gary. Messer–Kruse introduces the committed anarchists as revolutionaries, but not primarily victims of a social injustice; however he is unsuccessful in his aim to "get inside their heads and view the world through their eyes" as he attempted to do (p. 8). Messe–Krusse neglects to discover a linkage from the eight separate anarchists to the political and cultural views of German workers, interestingly even given that six of the eight sentenced men were German immigrants. Additionally Musse–Kruse does not equate relationships between the events he discusses and the recollection of Chicago history. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Feminist Theory Of Feminism Introduction How can we effect change in the world when only half of it is invited to feel welcome to participate in the conversation ( Watson, 2014). In the feminist perspective, which is an extension of feminism, there is support of equality for both women and men. Feminism is a belief that women and men have equal rights and opportunities. There are many different branches in the feminist perspective, one of the most interesting one is intersectional feminism. Intersectional feminism believes that experiences of class, gender, and race can not be adequately understood unless we understand that women of different races have different experiences. Women of color are told everyday how they have to fit in with the beauty norms that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This period was concurrent with the anti–war and civil rights movements. Still persistent issues that existed from the first wave carried on to the second wave. These issues regarded sexuality and reproductive rights (2005). The third wave of feminism started in the mid–1990's and is referred to as a response to the perceived failures of the second wave. In the third wave we saw a new type of feminist. The new feminist rejected that the notion of lipstick, high heels and exposed low cut necklines, identified with male oppression. (Feminist and Intersectionality, 2017). The third wave of feminism also was the first to emphasize that feminism was more specific to the rights of white women, rather than women on minorities. Intersectional feminism is often times called black feminism. It was coined as a movement by Kimberlé Crenshaw. The creation of this type of feminism was concurrent with the Civil Rights Movement. Crenshaw believed that the intersectionality experience of black women was far more powerful than the sum of their race and sex. She believed that observations that do not take intersectionality, fail to accurately address how black women are subordinate (DeFrancisco & Palczewski, 2007). Intersectional feminism argues that gender, race and class are intersecting oppressions ( Jones e.t al, quoting Crenshaw, 2013). Intersectional feminism allows us to understand that while some women are subject to sexism, some women are greater affected because

Imagine a future 'utopia' of our species: A global community of humanity, which will have overcome the disunity of its primitive origin. A united human race, without boundaries dividing it against itself, living harmoniously with itself and with all Nature. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An enlightened and benevolent anarchism, such as expressed by the terms, "anarcho–pacifism" / "anarcho–socialism," is, in my view, the only anarchism that can ever work. To arrive at an anarcho– pacifist / anarcho–socialist society, we as a global community must undergo great psychological transformation. Only then can anarchism become a practical ideology for the world. However, we as individuals need not wait for all humanity to find anarchy before we can have anarchy for ourselves. We can manifest anarchy within our own circles of being, individually, here and now; thus becoming individually liberated. The anarchist truly has the best political deal. Whereas the fascist depends upon a fascist government to have fascism, the state socialist upon a socialistic government to have socialism, the democrat upon a democratic government to have democracy, and the libertarian capitalist upon a libertarian government to have laissez faire capitalism, the anarchist can choose to have anarchy, here and now, without any government. • 30. Benefits Of The Individual Environment And The Team... The idea to succeed can only go so far, it is the paths chosen that can make the end result a success, or a failure. We all want to succeed, but as a leader you have to determine what approach to make. Shall I take on this idea alone, or should I create a group to assist me, whatever it takes to succeed, right? Some ideas can be accomplished by an individual alone, but usually bigger ideas need a team to see it through. Working in a team environment can have its drawbacks, but it also has many benefits. In this paper I am going to provide research to support the setbacks and benefits of both the individual environment and the team environment. I found that what an individual may lack is a team's gain, vice versa. The important result is the success achieved by either a team, or an individual. In the International Journal of Psychology, the authors described a team as being "collectivism." In the journal article Presence of Others and Task Performance in Japan and the United States: A Laboratory Investigation, the research was not only testing the effects of the different cultures on job productivity and job quality, but they were also focusing on the effects of working in a group versus working individually. In their words, they were comparing collectivism and individualism. • 32. Analysis Of ' The Raid ' By Leo Tolstoy While reading "The Raid" by Leo Tolstoy, one is instantly struck by the strong contrast between the peaceful nature scenes and the violent battle scenes. One minute the sounds of crickets and frogs are charmingly echoing through the night, and the next you can hear the "clang of a heavy gun" and the "sound of bayonets touching one another" (Tolstoy 20). In one scene, the generals and majors stand watching the gory battle below, yet they continue to discuss the beautiful nature around them as if nothing else could possibly be worth their attention (Tolstoy 25). However, upon closer readings, it becomes evident that the war and nature scenes are not as separate as they seem. As the story progresses, the two begin to weave together, until distinguishing them is nearly impossible. Indeed, this subtly merger can be seen throughout multiple scenes as the story evolves. From the start, nature and war are both extremely prominent in the story. But, they are presented separately from each other. The best example of this is on page thirteen. "The sun had done half its journey, and cast its hot rays through the glowing air onto the dry earth...the motionless air seemed full of transparent dust, the heat was becoming unbearable" (Tolstoy 13). However, several different groups and organizations made an attempt to reach out to their cause in an attempt to fight for that which was morally correct. Despite all of the organizations that proclaimed King's teachings, there was one organization that surprised King by their lack of support. This was the White Church. In King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail," King is very disappointed in the white church because they want the black population to wait so justice can sort itself out, they believe order is more important than justice, and they have no leadership to promote that which is right to do. First, King feels ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... King states that the White Church is part of the movement that is, " more devoted to order rather than justice" (358). What King means by this, is that the White Church would rather see the country be morally incorrect and have a system of operations that infringed on a specific group of peoples' rights just for the sake of having order. King later stated, "Law and order exist to establish justice and when they fail they become dangerously structured dams blocking the flow of social progress" (358). The point that King was trying to get across in this statement is that there are laws and certain expectations put on people for the sole purpose of having justice and peace in the country. And for the laws that are enacted to be completely against justice is just plain absurdity that will block the progress of the country until the problem is fixed. King makes another valid point concerning the White Church whenever he states, "I have watched white churches stand on the sideline and merely mouth pious irrelevancies and sanctimonious trivialities" (362). Decision–making skill is a top priority in management as it creates a culture of clarity by allowing one to determine the problem and come to a resolution that is beneficial to the staff and organization. This skill was of vital importance in the Mount Everest simulation. During the simulation, our team was clueless and unaware that we would face harsh weather condition during the climb that would cause major health issues. As a result, our teams were faced with unexpected events causing crises that were so sudden and overwhelming that they required immediate response, limiting our team decision–making processes throughout the simulation when such situation would arise. This fundamental issue of occurrence that we did not reasonably plan for resulted with different team members at different camps on the mountain. Within this environment of disturbance, the idea of individualism approach acted as an obstacle for change and problem resolution which had a moderating effect on group performance loss. Management Research Evidence The first scholarly article explores into the many potential of individualism in comparison with collectivism in an organizational setting. As current research suggests that individualistic ideals should not be given opportunities because they encourage destructive conflict and opportunism due to their self–governing attribute, whereas collectivism is more sought–after as they initiate cooperation and productivity. He analyzes the concept of "strong ties" and "weak ties" and how these relationships affect an individual's willpower and determination to help a cause. Gregory Orr puts these ideas into context in his memoir, "Return to Hayneville", in which he recounts his experience and involvement in the civil rights movement of the 1960s. Malcolm Gladwell's "Small Change: Why the Revolution Will Not Be Tweeted", focuses, in particular, on the civil rights movement concentrates to the lunch counter sit–ins in Greensboro, North Carolina. Gladwell would classify Orr as someone who shared no relationship with the cause and only joined because because he wanted to find himself in the midst of chaos not necessarily because he was passionate about the civil rights movement. Gladwell describes the movement of sit ins across the south as a "fever". Orr found himself caught up in the contagion, he endured the beatings and the injustice the same as everyone else but his motives were not set for civil rights, he realized this when he was taken and held captive, "Even as I sank into depression and brooded in the stifling heat of that jail–barn, I was learning that I wanted to live," (Orr, 223). • 42. Anarchism and Elitism in the United States The United States was founded with the vision for freedom. Oppression had been experienced by our founding fathers and they knew it was absolutely necessary to provide structure to prevent oppressive governments in the future. The solution was a limited government that bordered the edge of anarchy, yet just enough structure to have order and civility. The design was to stay far from elitism so no government could control the people and allow the people to control the government. Today's current political climate allows us to take one of two sides: Democrat or Republican. The Democrats believe the Republicans have it all wrong because they are avoiding the opportunities for government to take care of the people. The Republicans think the Democrats have it all wrong because they are destroying the economy and power of America by redistributing the wealth to those who have not legitimately earned it. While we have been busy feuding between the two parties we have not even noticed the transition our country has taken. Today we are so far from the Constitution and we are now skirting the edge of tyranny. Throughout the years, political scientist and philosophers have expanded on a wide array ideologies, or types of governments that can be organized. These types of government are for the most part, equally limited. Therefore, a state being governed under the principles of liberalism does not usually practice socialism. What is collectivism and individualism you might ask, well collectivism is briefly defined as a group of people working together to give priority over individuals. On the other hand, individualism can be defined as a theory of favoring freedom over collective individuals and working to benefit his/her own self. Although the two seem very different, they also share many similar characteristics. In the novel Anthem, the main character lives in a society based from collectivism. The men and women are unable to choose what jobs they are given when they reach the working age, the Scholars choose their jobs for them. These Scholars are a group who are looked up to because they are the only people who are allowed to come up with new ideas for their society. Doug McAdam, author of Freedom Summer, states that there's three factors that explain why individuals do and do not show up to events and protests. The first characteristic is Biographical Availability. McAdam spells this out, saying that "Students, especially those drawn from privileged classes, are simply free, to a unique degree, of constraints that tend to make activism too time consuming or risky for other groups to engage in" (McAdam, 68). In terms of SLURP, the people who have time to dedicate to the social movement helps determine why individuals do and do not show up to events. Between after school jobs and activities and academic work, some people do not have time to lend to a cause or a movement. Since the targeted audience is college age students enrolled in college or university, this can make attracting members of the social movement difficult. The second characteristic is referred to as Attitudes and Values. "...They shared in the generalized optimism, idealism, and sense of potency that was the subjective heritage of their class and generation" (McAdam, 69). This excerpt talks about how the individuals involved in the Freedom Summer which consisted of civil rights movements in Mississippi all shared the same values. To be involved and unified in a movement, there needs to be similar values and attitudes being shared between all persons involved. Whether it be religious or moral values, it's a shared constant between all members actively participating in the social movement. Out of the numerous elements that arose in the 1960s, there are three movements that truly affected the American society. Things such as his assertion of the necessity of the state for humanity, his strong belief in an overriding spirit to a society, his connecting of freedom to reason and social order, are controversial notions. His allegiance to positive freedom brings attack from supporters of negative freedom, his notions of differing states for suiting differing societies appears anti–democratic and imperialistic, and his preference for a constitutional monarch seems unusual. It is these matters and others which have brought merited and less merited critique and objection to his work. It is the case that Hegel does treat the state as essential. In part this is due to his notion of positive freedom and his notion of the state as a means for actualizing a collective human will. It is also in part related to his preference for both the duty of ancient Athens and the Kantian style of ethics guided by individual reason; for which he tries to find a synthesis. In this it seems that he is aiming for a unification of collective and individual spirit and freedom. • 62. The Turtle By Kay Ryan Throughout the course of history, human nature has embraced conformity and being average. However, human nature expresses itself in a variety of ways and these differences make everyone an individual. Civil rights activists have recently made a strong effort to encourage people to embrace and express their differences. The recent push for a more open society has resulted in both backlash and acceptance. Kay Ryan explores what being an individual means and the choices we can and cannot make about ourselves in her poem "The Turtle". She uses the turtle, an often ill–suited creature in regard to survival, to contradict the common misconception that people can choose their sexuality. Kay Ryan, an open lesbian, often uses poetry to express her position on particular subjects in regard to sexual orientation. From the first line of the poem, Kay Ryan sets up her argument. The speaker poses an interesting question, "who would be a turtle who could help it?" Alternatively, the speaker's question could also be worded as who would be gay if they could help it, because of the history behind being openly gay, even in a progressive country like America. American society often vilifies people for their sexuality. Teenagers find themselves homeless and adults without jobs, despite what any law says. So, if one could choose to be somebody else why would they then choose to be treated as sub– human? The logic and the argument brings it to the conclusion that no one would ever choose being gay ... • 64. The Pros And Cons Of Freedom In America America has been shaped in many different ways and continues be shaped daily. America is constantly changing and facing new challenges. However, authors of By the People have four ideas liberty, self–rule, limited government, and equality that they believe are the leading factors in how America is shaped. These ideas help elaborate on what makes America a strong and withstanding country. These ideas are the base of America's politics and what makes us a unique country. These four ideas are constantly being debated between politicians on what the different meanings are. Firstly, liberty can be defined as the equal freedom from oppression and restriction in a society. Freedom is what the United States was designed to give most people however it is still being worked on in present day. Freedom is wanted for all American and is the essential focus in this country. There are two different types of liberty negative and positive liberty. Both negative and positive liberties can be debated on what is best for American society. According to Morone and Kersh, negative liberty can be defined as the freedom from the absence of restraint, (12). Negative liberty position is for the freedom from restriction of government on what the individual can or should do in society. The only restriction to a person should be if a person wants to harm another individual. Conservatives and libertarians are usually in favor of negative liberty. Positive liberty belief is that there should be freedom ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 66. The Koran´s Denial Of Christ's Crucifixion Anarchism is the belief in the demolition of any form of government and said government is to be replaced by a system where the citizens act on their own accord and act on their own beliefs on how the civilization should be. This mentality is the kryptonite of any government because it takes only a small anarchist movement to cripple the ones in power. This would be able to develop fear in the country which would lead the leaders to develop laws which condemns individuals for having beliefs which goes against that of the governments. In one instance this is seen during the Cold War and the Red Scare when the senator for Wisconsin (Joseph McCarthy) came up with McCarthyism. This was not only in response to the looming threat of communism at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edward J Martin is a professor with a phd in the humanities who wrote a academic journal named "Oligarchy, Anarchy, and Social Justice". In the journal he attempted to identify the problems associated with democratic organizations, and institutions. In the text he stated, "In the reformist tradition, popular justice intends to develop adequate procedures for the varied complexities the legal system facilitates; its goal is to make the system work more efficiently, not to change its fundamental principles"(Martin 64). This would show that reform comes about when people believe a factor within their society was broken. This was seen in "The Road" as most of the people that the two main characters encountered were cannibals. They are considered as bad guys since they break the main law which is needed to maintain their humanity. The cannibals found justification in their actions because the new world offered now source of food, they will have to change the law so they could still believe that they maintained their ... • 68. Mujers Fibres Research Paper The anarchist/women's rights organization Mujeres Libres was a pioneering force in the egalitarian movement. The organization faced much backlash during its existence solely because it was an organization of anarchist women during a time when patriarchy and nationalism were the dominating norms. Therefore, the group had to overcome many obstacles put in place by Spanish society to prove themselves as both a women's rights and an anarchist organization. Mujeres Libres used this unique intersection between anarchism and women's rights to bring a distinctive and specialized approach to equality that proved to be effective for giving a voice to silenced anarchist women. Though political fluctuation was abundant in early 1900s Spain, one constant within the society was its predominantly patriarchal nature. It was a society in which power was not associated with women, because women were not viewed as equals to men. Consequently, women lived very restricted lives; their place was limited to the household and their was worth determined by whether or not they were married or by how submissive they acted towards men. Because of the society's expectations that women should assume roles within the home, there was a vast discrepancy between the educational levels of men and women. Higher education was exceedingly rare among Spanish women and female illiteracy rates reached nearly 70%. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After its creation, Mujeres Libres encountered extensive backlash from other anarchist groups involved in the Spanish Civil War. • 70. How Is Anarres A Utopian Society To answer the question, How is the utopian society Anarres structured, one can attack it at many ways. First one can look at the cultural context of the time period in which the novel was written. LeGuin wrote The Dispossessed in 1974. One can argue that the community of Anarres was in inspired by the social movements of the late 1960's and early seventies. The civil rights movement, the feminist movement, the environmental movement, and the 60's counter culture or "hippie" values are all reflected in the culture and society of Anarres. Anarres is a society of anarchists. The society was formed after a revolution and war against the centralized government and plutocracies of Urras. On Anarres every one was created equal because ... An Anarrasti's incentive to work is not a need for money, finances or the desire for profit but they take pride and pleasure in completing tasks and working with others. "A person likes to do what he is good at doing." People take the dangerous, hard jobs because they take pride in doing them, they can egoize (they call it) or show off to the weaker. Its is the opinion of they neighbor that becomes the all mighty driving force. The private and social conscience knows that, there is no other reward, on Anarres, no law. One's own pleasure, and the respect of one's fellows, that is all they have. This relationship between the individual and society is later recognized as the bureaucratic machine (centralized government) that these Anarchists fight against. The Anarresian people can not refuse a posting (order by PDC) because they are ashamed. The social conscience completely dominates the individual conscience, in stead of striking a balance. "We don't cooperate––we obey. We fear being outcast, being called lazy, dysfunctional, eoizing," as Shevek once pointed out, "We fear our neighbors opinion more than we respect our own freedom." • 72. The Civil Rights Movement During The 1960 ' S The American South in the 1960 's and Ancient Thebes both had a rigid social and legal system that did not effectively and legitimately represent the majority of its citizens. In both eras, an antihero rose up to defy the establish system. Dr. King, in the 1960 's, protested unjust laws and was jailed and viewed as an antagonist. Similarly, in Ancient Thebes, Antigone is sentenced to death for doing what she believes is right, regardless of the law. If Dr. King failed, he stood to lose, in addition to his life, his reputation as someone who wanted true change for all African Americans. Furthermore, future generations of colored people would have to endure the same injustice that he was protesting against. Also, if his nonviolent ways failed there were people ready to take the civil rights movement in a violent direction. If Antigone 's defiance had failed, her brother will never find peace in the afterlife, and Thebes will never find unity and solace after its civil war. Additionally, she too could lose her life for her outward defiance. Therefore, both Dr. King 's nonviolent resistance, along with writing his letter from Birmingham Jail, and Antigone 's violation of Kreon 's edict are justified by what they stood to lose if they did not take their respective actions. Dr. King choose to address more than just his dissenters in "Letter From Birmingham Jail"; he decided to speak to all people from all times, in an open letter. The physical action of writing the ... • 76. John Orr Arsonist I believe that John Orr does fit the profile of an arsonist in many ways, and not in other ways. John Orr was a blue–collar arson investigator, he also attended investigator conventions and investigated one of his own fires; he kept the "mask of sanity" for quite some time. Orr burned retail stores, specifically in sections where there was foam, he seemed comfortable with this type of location and comfortable with the everyday items he used to start the fires; cigarettes, matches, yellow paper, and rubber bands. John Orr wrote a manifest about how he would get sexually excited at fires, becoming erected and even masturbating to the flames as they surrounded him. • 78. The's Benevolent Association, The Knights Of Labor And The... The Screwmen's Benevolent Association, The Knights of Labor and the Farmers Alliance are a few of the leading labor organizations in Texas. Developed as the political and human resource representation for many of Texas' post civil war laborers, these organizations invested considerable time and funding in advocating for the concerns of the working class. Established socialist communities were natural supporters for unionization based on their beliefs in cooperation for the greater good. Within a transformative decade for Texas workers, the Knights of Labor reached the pinnacle of its influence, failed a railroad strike in 1886 and eventually transformed into an agrarian and mechanics' organization. (A&M and Reid 2009) The growing influence of the Knights of Labor improved the standing of socialists by extension. In reality, the union was not socialist organization by definition. However, Texas socialists support and political gamesmanship contributed heavily to the growth and development of the Knights of Labor. (Texas A&M University Press 2010) Advocacy for Texas laborers and support for the civil rights movement became the focus of proponents of socialist political policies. Labor strikes and litigation against Texas based businesses routinely failed, illustrating the economic entrenchment of corporations and their accompanying judicial and legislative alliances. As the political clout of the Knights of Labor waned, the weight of political influence regarding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
