African American Music: Over the years, African American Music has developed as not only as
cultural but also artistic phenomenon affecting the world. The music takes its own stand of being
dominant as well of having a prevailing means of expression through the use of the lyrics. The lyrics

Wild Style, directed by Charlie Ahearn Essays
Wild Style (1983) was a film that documented the real world of hip hop before most people even
knew what hip hop was. This movie brings about the four crucial elements of hip hop – emceeing,
graffiti, break–dancing, and deejaying. These features are the backdrop to the story of a graffiti artist

Crush Brothers, goes through due to the fact that he is of Puerto Rican decent when the rest of the

Hip hop finds its ethnic origins in Jamaican music and DJs in the seventies who used two turntables
to create longer drum breaks in records for dance parties giving rise to "break dancing" and "break
dancers" now known as b–boys and b–girls (A Closer Look At a New Hip Hop Movement). DJs and
MCs popularized the technique of speaking over beats and the culture expanded to include street
dance and graffiti art. Embraced by working class urban and young African–Americans, the music

Most of the older generations criticize rap music for encouraging violence and depicting sexist
images frequently featured in rap. Rap music has also clearly depicted the long–standing class
differences within African–American nation (Hemmer, 6).

These instruments usually ended up in pawn shops at cheap rates ideal for poor blacks. What is most
unique about jazz is it's combination of the African characteristics of polyrhythm, polyphony,
improvisation, and the vocal tone given to instruments, with the harmony and arrangement of white
marching band music. Other afrocentric qualities which can be heard in the music are: call and
response, upbeat rhythm, repetition, falsetto, and guttural sounds. Some of the instruments used to
achieve this sound were the coronet, piccolo, alto horn, tuba, trombone, clarinet, piano, and later, the

The argument that hip hop needed to be created is insufficient in explaining its existence, yet, the
era's socioeconomic and political realities are still worth noting. The deejaying technique may never
have caught on, or been perfected in a world without block and street parties. In turn, such events
may never have existed without the gang rivalry in the Bronx, the graffiti culture, the cultural
pervasiveness of disco, and other trends which were hallmarks of the neighborhood in which hip–

Rock music is more than always slower than Hip Hop. Its sounds and beats are more hard, meaning
that they are more of a drum and guitar in the music. Often times they will have a chorus that is
