Accountancy Is An Important Statement In The Modern Age
Accountancy is a vital element in this modern era as it applies to the society. It is a term that is often
used for businesses only but actually can be seen everywhere – from small stores to restaurants,
schools , hospitals, individual's own personal day–to–day life.
Throughout my IGCSEs I have developed a comprehensive understanding of accounting concepts
such as its principles, liquidity management, preparation of financial statements and the importance
of validation and control. Because of my keen interest in accounting, I decided to continue study the
subject at A–level. What I didn't realize by this decision was the depth of knowledge I was going to
gain and how every single concept will become applicable to the real world. I spent most ... Show

The Modern Age : The Roaring Twenties
The Roaring Twenties began in the 1920s. It was known as the Modern Age because it brought
changes and innovations. The Roaring Twenties took place right after World War I. Millions of
people died and it was a horrible event. Soldiers returned and everyone went through a hard time.
People wanted to forget this catastrophic event so when they returned they tried to forget the past
and live the moment. Many wanted to to enjoy themselves, they began to value convenience and
leisure over hard work and denial. World War I brought changes. People started to drink, party, and
enjoying life. However, the 1920s was not only butterflies and rainbows. It was a really hard time
for farmers, women, African Americans, and immigrants.
The Roaring Twenties was also known as the age of consumerism. There was a lot of spending. The
United States was a wealthy country with a high standard of living. People thought bigger and more
was better. They made expenses to buy big houses and great cars. Everyone wanted to live lavishly.
Many cities like New York and Chicago grew rapidly. Skyscrapers were being built. A lot of it was
because of transportation. People started to move from rural areas to cities and towns. There was a
lot of innovations. Women had more independence and more freedom to wear the latest fashions like
mini–skirts. They started to show off more skin and wearing makeup. Furthermore, women were
giving the right to vote when the 19th amendment was passed in 1920. During World War

The Positive And Negative Effects Of Privacy In The Modern...
Summary: In the modern age, almost everything that happens in our everyday lives is stored in
computers in the form of bits, or a combination of ones and zeros. However, as with any new
technology, the explosion of bits has both positive and negative side effects. Some positive effects
include increased work efficiency and an increased access to knowledge, while many of the negative
effects have to deal with privacy. There are seven basic truths about bits that are referred to as
"koans" because they are slightly paradoxical in nature. First, even though a computer gives the
impression of displaying an image or playing an audio file, everything it does is simply a
combination of ones and zeros. Secondly, computers are essentially the only things capable of
creating a perfect copy, and they have the ability to copy things perfectly millions of times over.
Third, information that is stored outside of the internet has basically become useless in today's
society, and even information stored on obsolete hardware is of no use to anyone. Fourth, the
processing power of computers has been growing exponentially every year since 1965, and this has
paved the way for countless new inventions and applications of computers. Fifth, the explosive
nature of the growth of computers can make or break companies over the span of only a couple
years. It all depends on how an existing company can react and adapt to new technological
innovations. Sixth, nothing ever disappears from the

The Modern Age
The Modern Age appeared when people began to evolve from medieval times, lasting throughout
the centuries and into today's society. It's not about birth anymore; who you were born to doesn't
matter. People are given so much more freedom than in the feudal times because compared to the
Middle Ages, when brute force was dominant, the Modern Age is based upon what people can do,
intellectually more so than physically; which lets them become anything they want. But when did
this starting happening? Who began all this? I believe that the three key people who set the Modern
Age into motion was Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, and Mary Wollstonecraft, because of their
traits, their environments around them, and because of the lasting effect their ... Show more content

Leonardo Da Vinci was a man of great curiosity, passion, persistence, and innovation. His curiosity
led him to try his hand at many fields, resulting in many different experiences that nicknamed him
"The Renaissance Man." He tried his hand in many sciences, but particularly at aerodynamics,
where he created countless designs for a flying machine because he desperately wanted to fly. As
each design failed, his persistence rose; he would begin to work on his next concept after observing
how they failed, and then try his third concept and his fourth concept, never tiring out or giving up.
Da Vinci's passions were spread throughout his many fields. In art, he included many techniques the
Middle Ages hadn't created yet, like sfumato and chiaroscuro. His artwork depicted humanism,
individualism, secularism, realism, and mannerism, which began in the Renaissance; people began
to value and focus on themselves, showing pride in who they were by getting self–portraits. The
morals of people shifted from being humble and caring about their next life to selfish and trying to
make the most of this life. In the religious art Da Vinci does, it shows how people were equal with
God and other religious figures, as

The Steam Railway And The Invention Of The Modern Age
The steam railway was a significant invention in the development of the modern age. I believe that
the steam engine was the most important invention to come from the industrial revolution. The
expansion of the railway system across the United States and the world influenced how we live our
lives today. Throughout the industrial revolution the steam railway reduced the time it took for
freight to reach its final destination, expanded the reach people could sell products too, provided a
safer transport compared to horses, along with countless other things. The steam railway better
connected people and helped fuel the second industrial revolution. Without it our world might look a
lot different than it does today. First, the steam railway ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Subsequently, the steam railway saved fifty thousand working days of ten hours each was saved.
This translates to me as a huge savings in time and money to travel. This is also assuming that
people are only saving just 1 hour. Cars were not around at this time, so if people traveling were
going further than this the number of hours saved might be exponentially bigger than what was
estimated. Britain is much a significantly smaller country than that of the United States, and if it
took into consideration the time is would take to travel by horse across the country compared to
steam railway the time would be tremendously bigger. This time saved could be more than human
savings it could also mean the reduction it takes cargo to travel by railways compared to horses.
Consequently, cargo would also arrive safer because roads during this time were not like what they
were today. Often times the horse cart would break a wheel or get stuck in the mud. Roads at this
time were not reliable and were not always well maintained. Also, this would lead to construction
projects taking much less time than it previously would. This once more would save time in how
long the project took, and save money paying workers to build the project. Overall, this savings in
time , safer cargo travel, and overall improvements in the quality of life shaped by the steam railway
system would be felt for numerous years to

Essay about Architect of the Modern Age
Frank Gehry is a world renowned architect known for several important buildings such as the
Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. He was born in Toronto Canada
February 28, 1929 but moved with his family to Los Angeles, California in 1947(1). Gehry attended
the University of Southern California and graduated in 1954 with a degree in architecture (1). In
1962, he established his own architectural firm in 1962 now called Gehry Partners, LLP (1). In the
beginning, Gehry used the International Style of architecture (1) but it did not suit him well because
those type of building had a stark, unornamented appearance so over time he was able to create his

The exhibition area is 11,000 square meters distributed among 20 galleries (4). Ten of the galleries
have an orthogonal plan and have the exterior limestone walls and the other nine galleries are
irregularly designed and have the exterior titanium walls (4). The last gallery is the largest at 3900
square meters which now houses the largest sculpture commission in history, Richard Serra's The
Matter of Time. The creation of this construction was made possible by the use of the
technologically advanced 3D design computer program called Catia (5). This program significantly
assisted Gehry in modeling the Guggenheim so that he would not have any future problems in
construction. Critics of the Guggenheim feel that although the museum is iconic it fails as a public
place because it does not reflect and support the civilization, culture and finances of Bilbao (6).
Nevertheless, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is the zenith of Gehry's architectural career. Another
masterpiece of Gehry is the Walt Disney Concert Hall located in Los Angeles. It is located on a
historically (Bunker Hill) and culturally prominent downtown site adjoining the existing Music
Center of Los Angeles (7). It all started in 1987 when the late Lillian Disney, wife of the late Walt
Disney, made an initial contribution of $50 million to build a first–class performance venue as a gift
to the people of Los Angeles and as homage to Walt Disney's zeal to the arts (8). Over time many

College in The Modern Age
Throughout the first unit we have explored the reasons as to why college may not be the best fit for
some. I believe that, like a majority of children, I was raised on the basis that a college degree was
needed to be successful. Many may think of higher education as a giant Ponzi scheme, where
students are lured into the promise of receiving high–paying jobs due to the fact they attended
University. Today I realize that a college degree isn't a guarantee that you'll be successful rather it is
a way to gain the edge against peers. In this paper, I am going to further evaluate why college was
the best fit for me, and how I came to that conclusion.
Foremost, obtaining an undergraduate degree was presented to me by ... Show more content on

I believe that we need someone to step in and provide the training that is required to high school
counselors on other options besides college. Fortunately, enough I attended a high school where the
counselors were trained on giving students other options besides college. A close friend who knew
college wasn't the right option for him was given information about different apprenticeships he
could apply for after college. He is currently a welder and thinks that he has made one of the
greatest decisions of his life.
Moreover, While I was in high school preparing to apply for college, I would often see some of my
fellow peers struggling to figure out how they would fit the bill for University. As I first began to
apply to the big–name universities I was noticing the very steep prices, with little financial aid help.
I knew I could obtain various scholarships, however that isn't the case for most students. Mike Rowe
stated that "There is a trillion dollars in debt on the student loan side. That is over five–hundred
times the rate of inflation it beats healthcare by over two–hundred and fifty trillion dollars." I think
that student loans are single–handedly the biggest opposition to many students attending University.
In my personal opinion, many students choose to follow the things that they are passionate about,

Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern Age
When the word "Mongol" is said I automatically think negative thoughts about uncultured, barbaric
people who are horribly cruel and violent. That is only because I have only heard the word used to
describe such a person. I have never really registered any initial information I have been taught
about the subject pass the point of needing and having to know it. I felt quite incompetent on the
subject and once I was given an assignment on the book, Genghis Khan and the Making of the
Modern Age, I was very perplexed for two reasons. One I have to read an outside book for a class
that already requires a substantial amount of time reading the text, and secondly I have to write a
research paper in History. I got over it and read the book, which surprisingly enough interested me a
great deal and allow me to see the Moguls for more than just a barbaric group of Neanderthals, but
rather a group of purpose driven warriors with a common goal of unity and progression. Jack
Weatherford's work has given me insight on and swayed my opinion of the Mongols. Jack
Weatherford showed great enthusiasm and passion while depicting Genghis Khan as a great leader,
who was responsible for the unity of people and various other accomplishments. He had a very
positive attitude toward the subject, although he didn't set out to write a book about him, but rather
on about the history of world commerce. In the process of researching the Silk Road he traveled to

Defining Victory Of The Modern Age Of Warfare
Words Matter: Defining Victory in the Modern Age of Warfare
The United States has not stopped winning wars but the nature of both war and victory has changed.
Adjusting to an evolving geopolitical environment, since World War II the U.S. has changed the
reasons it employs military force and the types of wars it wages. Taken within the context of the
each conflict's era, the U.S. has met with mixed results in each conflict but ultimately has emerged
victorious.
Defining Victory
What is victory? In order to understand victory and defeat it is important to consider the national
objectives that governed each conflict. Since World War II, the U.S. has participated in five major
conflicts (Korea, Vietnam, Dessert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring
Freedom in Afghanistan). In each of these conflicts, the U.S. demonstrated military superiority.
However, unlike previous wars, these wars resulted in mixed results based on the specific political
and military objectives of the time.
Korea initiated the policy of containment that defined the Cold War struggle between the U.S. and
the Soviet Union. While the conflict's objectives changed multiple times, the coalition met the initial
objective to prevent the spread of communism on the Korean Peninsula. In Vietnam, while the aim
was the same the results were very different. The U.S. was unable to force a political compromise
that prevented the fall of Democratic South Vietnam.
In contrast to Korea and Vietnam,

Origin of Communication
The history of communication dates back to prehistory, with significant changes in communication
technologies (media and appropriate inscription tools) evolving in tandem with shifts in political and
economic systems, and by extension, systems of power. Communication can range from very subtle
processes of exchange, to full conversations and mass communication. Human communication was
revolutionized with speech approximately 200,000 years ago. Symbols were ... Show more content

Paintings was used in the past like writing, to preserve the memory of some one or some event so
that future generations may come to know of the might, majesty and power of the rulers and past
civilizations.
Other than these methods of communication there were other methods used to signal and
communicate with in a distance. Our ancestors developed systems for sending simple messages or
signals over a distance through drumbeats, fire or smoke signals, lanterns, birds and arrows. Birds
carried messages through a long distance. The message was attached to a foot of a Pigeon or a
Falcon who flew home with the message. This specific method of communication was used to a
great extent during World War I.
The Semaphore system of flags or flashing lights was used to send messages over a moderate
distance where traveling was difficult. In the early 1790s the French scientist and engineer Claude
Chappe persuaded the French government to install a system of towers that used semaphore signals
to send visual telegraphs along approved routes throughout the country. The system was copied in
Great Britain and the United States. (Microsoft® Encarta® 2006. © 1993–2005 Microsoft

Rites of Spring: The Great War and the Birth of the Modern Age. For Eksteins, present day
cognizance was conceived on the war zones of World War I and those war zones were, in some
sense, resulting from the tired dreams of the falling flat Western creative ability. The book's title and
topic originate from Stravinsky's artful dance Rite of Spring, which debuted in Paris in 1913 when
workmanship still had the capacity to stun. Delivered by Diaghilev, arranged and moved by
Nijinsky, the artful dance sanctioned the people legend of a lady who truly moves herself to death in
an agnostic custom to respect the divine forces of spring and fruitfulness. It is in this reversal of life
and demise that Eksteins discovers his focal similitude for what was to happen to Europe. ... Show

The Age Of Modern America
It was the Compromise of 1877 that brought reconstruction in the south to an end. The compromise
called for the withdraw of federal troops in the southern states, promised that a southern would be
appointed as Postmaster General, offered the south federal subsidies, and in return, Rutherford
Hayes would become president, and reconstruction would officially be over (Peskin). The closing of
one chapter lead to a new one: the birth of modern America., the Gilded Age. Major changes were
taking place in the country, almost all being a result of the rapid industrialization that was taking
place. Cities thrived with people, most seeking out work. Inventions flourished, light flooded the
streets with the widespread availability of electricity and the lightbulb. Time were definitely
changing, especially within the social classes of America. The changes effected the classes in many
different ways: the wealthy suddenly became wealthier, and the middle class moved up in the ranks,
as well. The same could not be said for the lower classes, though, particularly the working–class.
For them, times were tough, poverty was widespread and conditions were unsafe in almost any
environment they inhabited. Despite the industrial revolution being a positive for many of the social
classes in America, it was very detrimental to the working–class in that it lead to urbanization and
overcrowding of cities, many people taking jobs in dangerous factories, and a seemingly
disorganized family life.

Advertising began to take form in the 1950 's and the 1960's as the age of modern marketing began
to rise. In the 1960 's, great economic changes took place the influenced how the marketers in large
agencies advertising products to the general public. Beginning with the creative revolution, modern
marketing formed itself to cater both the changing economy and the general public. Many
companies followed the trend of branding, which is forming a distinction between two similar
products produced by separate companies, to maintain the competitive edge. This caused advertising
agencies, such as J. Walter Thompson and Doyle Dane Bernbach, to adapt new forms of advertising
that included the greater use of commercials and the introduction of various company spokes
characters. While modern marketing had its beginning in the 1950 's, the 1960 's were a pivotal
decade in modern marketing because the changing economy, social conditions, and war efforts
caused advertising agencies to generate different advertising campaigns that targeted various
demographics as well as methods that are still in practice by advertising agencies in today 's market.
The 1960's were a decade of economic changes. The economy became progressively grew as a more

Romeo & Juliet Laws in the Modern Age
In this article it explains how two teenagers were criminally charged for sending nudes to each other
showing the consequences many states face when they prosecute sexting. Like most states, North
Carolina has yet to update child pornography laws used to charge minors who are caught sexting
and the laws can carry stiff penalties including prison time. The North Carolina case began when
nude photos were found on the boy's phone in late 2014. It led to a year of uncertainty for the teens,
who are now 17, until they struck deals in recent weeks to reduce the charges and give them a
pathway to clearing their records.
Some states have enacted laws against sexting that occurs between teenagers, with penalties that

The American Civil War began on April 12 1861. There are several reason that the Civil war began.
The first reason was the major difference in the economic and social status that was taking place in
the South versus the North. Second reason that the war broke out was the issue of states' rights
versus federal rights when it came to who would have more power in the states. The third reason

Meanwhile in the North they were an economy based on agriculture. The North was using raw
cotton and turning it into finish goods. This would cause a rift in the economy of the north and the
south. This change meant the evolution of the North would bring many different races and classes
having to work together to accomplish their new way of life. With the south stuck in their antiquated
ways they would fall behind in infrastructure and technology. The issue of State Rights versus
Federal Rights was other major issue that would bring on the Civil War in America. This had been
an issue since the American Revolution. With the introduction of The Articles of Confederation. The
Article of Confederations gave the power to the federal government. This weak federal government
would soon be replaced when the Articles of Confederation would replace with the U. S.
Constitution in 1789. This caused many issues among the states. Many of the states felt that they
should be able to decide if they were going to consent to certain federal acts. This would bring about
the idea of nullification, which would give the states the right to rule federal act unconstitutional.
The new government would deny the idea of nullification pushing the states to move toward
secession. The third issues that cause problems between the north and the south was the issues of
whether the new states that were entering the union, would they be a slave or non–slave state. The

Odysseus is Not a Hero for the Modern Age Essay
Many would argue that Odysseus is more of a villain nowadays, for every instance of his wiliness or
feats of strength there are several of venality, vice, cruelty, or selfishness. The episode of the Sirens,
(Book 12), is one example. The only reason Odysseus ties himself up to the mast, when instead he
could have simply plugged his ears with wax like the rest of his crew, is that he chooses the
jeopardous choice, wanting to "go down in the books" by being the first man to ever listen to the
Sirens song and live. In consequence he possibly endangers the rest of his crew from safely reaching
home by endangering himself. While Odysseus' many adventures are very exciting, he spends a

In the time of the so–called Heroic Age (roughly the Mycenaean Age, the time of the Trojan War,
1200–1100 BCE or thereabouts) standards were much, much different, and some of them, at least,
for very good reasons. Probably by those standards (or the standards of Homer's time, some 400
years later) Odysseus was considerably closer to a hero than he would be in our eyes today. Perhaps,
what might now be seen as grotesquely excessive blood letting, would then have been seen as an
understandable or even necessary act of retribution
Again, Odysseus' darker and 'immoral' acts could be viewed could viewed as metaphors for and/or
accurate reflections of the imperfection of the human race. Characteristics that show that heroes too
are flawed. A hero who has some shortcomings is a more believable character, they may be godly in
the sense that they do what no one else can, but that they are still only human. Drawing on this,
Odysseus can be considered a hero for modern times. He possesses admiral skills, such as
commitment and knowledge, which are still considered heroic today. He uses these traits to protect
himself and his crew as they make the long journey home. Although Odysseus is renowned for his
expertise in fighting, he is

Red Rooms : A Murder Legend For The Modern Age Essay
Red Rooms: A Murder Legend For the Modern Age "Red Rooms" are purportedly secret
underground websites where people can watch the live murder of a captured victim. Although Red
Rooms tales are a fairly recent trend, first widely appearing in 2014 and largely picking up interest
in 2015 (Figure C) they can be seen as the evolution of prior murder myths and speak to societal
fears both contemporary and old. Red Rooms are supposedly found on an underground segment of
the internet referred to as the "dark web". The dark web itself is a real entity, and can only be
accessed through a special browser called the Tor browser (Roy, "Everything"). The dark web
differs from the regular internet in that while the regular internet, or "clear web" can be searched
easily with services such as Google, websites on the dark web can only be accessed if someone has
the site 's web address. Unlike "clear web" sites, which have simple addresses such as "google.com"
or "facebook.com", the addresses for dark web sites are an incomprehensible jumble of letters and
numbers (Roy, "Everything"). The only way to obtain a dark web address to be given the address by
someone who wishes to distribute it, which gives dark web sites a sense of exclusivity and secrecy.

called "Bitcoin" ("Are Deep Web"). Bitcoin is a real currency, and while the technical details of the

The Negative Consequences Of Plagiarism In The Modern Age
Recent memory has been filled with technological advances following one after another; the
twenty–first century has been an era in which change occurs at a nearly exponential rate. Each of
these advances has brought new opportunities for students and educators to further the learning
experiences. Few students can imagine a time before beneficial technologies like interactive white
boards or the near infinite resources held within the internet. However, these same resources which
can be positively used by students to supplements their education can also be used to unethically
benefit from the hard work of others. In the modern age, plagiarism is a tempting, easy, and
accessible ploy utilized by students across the world. In spite of the shifts in technology and
increased ease with which plagiarizers can operate, academia remains staunch in its stance against
the theft of other's intellectual property. At all educational levels, teachers still stress the importance
of using proper citations and the administrations of various high schools and colleges have strict
anti–plagiarism policies. However, the methodologies of teachers and administrators have changed
to fit the times. In high school, many English teachers spend entire weeks teaching their students the
proper methods of citation on paper and using online resources. Likewise, school officials explain to
their students on a yearly basis the negative consequences of plagiarizing works while providing

Micro Plastics : The Creation Of The Modern Consumer Age
As humans, we are the ultimate consumers with nothing more important than our vanity. Just
watching television, viewing visual media, and recognizing what humans spend their money on,
highlights our focus on our personal appearance. This has created an industry that provides products
to make us look younger and sexier than our neighbor. But at what cost? These products have
created a vast amount of litter, which is not biodegradable. Humans have just dumped the waste into
our environment not considering the effects or the cost of our actions. The production of micro
plastics and the resulting pollution must be stopped and cleaned up because of the detrimental
effects that can no longer be ignored.

used in larger items, which then disintegrate into smaller pieces, which are also considered micro
plastics (Tox Town). This litter is added from urban and agricultural runoff, waste management
companies, and ocean dumping by cruise ships, and waste from shipping and fishing companies

synthetic fibers micro plastics into the water supply (Krieger). This plastic is not biodegradable, so
all of this used manmade consumer plastic must go somewhere. Unfortunately, as a society, we have
just dumped this pollution into our environment and particularly into our water supply. As a society,
we have learned to dump or bury our garbage in the attempt to get rid of and forget about our litter.
This worked with biodegradable litter; however, contemporary chemically created waste does not

The Age Of Imperialism And Its Effects On The Modern World
It is reasonably hard to measure the extent of the influence that imperialism has had on the
contemporary world, at least due to the fact that imperialism shaped the appearance of the modern
world, starting from the name of places and geographical boundaries, to the establishment of a
globalized economic system. Accordingly, European colonization has left its mark on many parts of
the world, especially by providing a strong foundation for the formation of a cultural
universalization, substantial changes in the education system, an occurrence of a language hierarchy,
and the emergence of a world economic system (Osterhammel and Petersson 2005, pg. 73–77).
Through altered societal structures, a restricted access to education, substantial changes to the
cultural values of colonized countries, and the special division of the labor market, the age of

The Age Of Revolutions And The Modern World
The Age of Revolutions and the Modern World
Name:
Institution:
Introduction
The period from 1774 to 1848, is referred to as the Age of Revolution. This is because it saw various
significant revolutionary movements take place that gave way to the complex modern world. These
revolutions took place in different regions in Europe and across America. Some of the revolutions
include: American Revolution, the Haitian Revolution, the revolt of the slaves in Latin America, the
Greek Revolution, the French Revolution, and the independence movements of nations in Latin
America. These revolutions are considered to have impacted the world as they changed different
aspects of society including social setup, political aspects and the economic set up of the world
(Matson, 2005).
The term modernization refers to the transformation or change of a society from a rural and agrarian
position to a more urban, secular and industrial position. Modernization developed rapidly after the
age of revolution and changed the society. The idea of modernization is derived from the notion of
an evolutionary society. This involves the transition of society from barbarism to a developed and ...

events that led to the rise of these revolutions. Some of these factors include citizens of each state
being treated unfairly by those in power. Initially there were a number of riots which erupted to
protest tis misuse of power. The American Revolution, for example, started in mid 1770s, with the
Battle of Lexington. The American Revolutionary War was a fight for the independence from the
colonial rule of the British. The French revolution started a decade after the American revolution.
Similar to the American revolution, the French revolution occurred following the desire to change

A Teacher Of The Modern Digital Age
A teacher of the modern digital age should expose themselves to a wide variety of new and old
technologies. Students are naturally always trying new applications, and teacher should be the same
way. Kristi Roth, an expert in the field of technology innovation, suggests that all "educators should
expose themselves to a wide variety of technology" (1). All teachers should have the appropriate
preparations to use technology in their classroom. Therefore, current and future teachers must have
an internal drive to develop their technological knowledge in order to maintain their current status as
a professional educator, in the always evolving advanced generation of learners. Technology keeps a
teacher current to their students.
Today students are products of the digital age. According to the article Make Learning Matter for the
Multitasking Generation, written by Jill Adams; "82% of students are connected to the internet, by
the seventh grade, and utilizing its capabilities" (6). Students have developed the motivation to use
the internet which has made a new generation of learners that have been labeled the generation of
multi–taskers. Students spend lots of time one line, and often are using more than one medium; for
example surfing the web and watching TV, watching TV working on homework, using social media
and surfing the web and completing there homework. Technology has helped create a modern
generation of students that "want to make the most of every minute, seizing

Cyber Security And The Modern Age
Cyber Security in the Modern Age We are bombarded by threats all the time, most of the time we
have no idea it is happening. We have to be cautious of the web sites we visit, the emails we read
and the applications we install. Many of us do not want understand the danger we face every time
we go online. Just look at the way we use social media, posting information for the whole world to
see with little regard for the repercussion of these actions. Cyber security is not just the job of
professionals, but everyone connected to the Internet. As we allow the Internet to become more and
more embedded into our lives the topic of cyber security also need to become more embedded in our
lives as well. Duncan Campbell, president and CEO of the Pennsylvania Bankers Association, points
out, "Now more than ever, the world is vulnerable to hacking, phishing, data breaches, malware
attacks and denial of service attempts from bad actors and nation states who want to compromise
individual identification data and wreak havoc on our economy," (Campbell). Each year we here
about these attacks, Target, T. J. Maxx, Home Depot just to name a few. More concerning then, the
frequency of these attacks is the magnitude of the data lost in these attacks. But where does it end,
some experts believe that your next attack could come from something as a simple copier. Brice

Analysis Of Watchmen By Alan Moore
Being gifted with the term of "being a hero" holds tremendous power in our culture; children write
cute assignments on who they look up to, adolescents watch and read about heroes in their
entertainment, and even adults have personal or fictional heroes they will never get too old to stop
idolizing. In our society, we 've been raised to associate this word, "Hero", to a perfect being;
however, the evolving times and entertainment industry has made the "hero" a more complex and
multifaceted character. From Jerry Siegle 's kid friendly "Superman", to Frank Miller 's night–
dwelling "Batman", and lastly to our topic of discussion, Alan Moore 's "Watchmen" with its
conflicted depiction of characters blurring the line between being a hero or a ... Show more content

The main characters are Jupiter, Nite Owl, Rorschach, Dr. Manhattan, Comedian, and Ozymandias.
Foremost the best example of a "hero" actually being a terrible person is the Comedian in
"Watchmen". Though he is considered a patriotic "hero", he rapes and kills women, he loves
violence and killing, he 's a drunk, and he doesn 't have a single kind line among all the insults he
hurls at other people in the entire comic. However even with all this, he is still considered a patriotic
vigilante who is a "hero" employed legally by the government after all other masked heroes where
banned by "The Keene Act". Juspeczyc, "Jupiter", is able to show several themes that would have
never been acceptable in the previous decades of comic books including sexual encounters with
Daniel and Dr. Manhattan at a young age, promiscuous attire, and insubordination when arguing
with her mother and others. The 1980s still slightly stunk of female oppression lingering from past
decades, but women were starting to take a stand and become a force of their own which I believe is
shown through this female character and many others in comics since the 80s in order to appeal to a
female and male audience. Nite Owl, or Daniel, is the most morally sound character who tries to be
a good person in the group of masked anti–heroes called the "Watchmen." It was with the good

The Age Of Modern Business
BYOD Policies Amanda B Sheraden Northwest Nazarene University Abstract Over the course of
the last twenty years or so businesses have seen an astounding leap in technological sophistication.
The use of computers, tablets, smartphones, and various other devices has become very common at
home and in the workplace. This has led to both increased productivity for businesses, as well as
greater availability and affordability for individuals. With the blending of how, when, and where
data can be accessed it is no wonder this interconnectivity between home and work has created
issues never considered just a few years ago. One approach that some businesses have adopted to
address both the positives and negatives in this frequently changing high–tech society are "bring

Differences Between Modern Society And The Middle Ages
Have you ever thought about the differences between modern society and the Middle Ages? What
stick out immediately are things like cars, cell phones, and running water. But when you think about
it, the items previously mentioned are really just enhanced versions over what was available in
medieval times. Instead of cell phones, they sent letters. While they didn't have cars, they could
travel on horse and carriage. Another noticeable difference between then and now is that the
kingdoms of the Middle Ages have been replaced by democratic governments. While there are
plenty of differences between a kingdom and a government, one thing that they have always shared
is the duty to take care of its citizens.

Eurocentric Beauty Standards In The Western And Modern Age
It is a generally accepted principle that societies create standards of beauty, wherein certain features,
qualities, or traits are posited as more attractive and desirable. These beauty standards differ among
historical periods and localities and are disseminated through media, literature, and other forms of
communication. In the modern era, beauty standards have often been found to be Eurocentric, which
I define to mean ideals of beauty that correlate with and enforce whiteness (e.g. light skin, large
eyes, thin noses, straight hair) and are the result of historical processes that contextualize whiteness
as superior. Such beauty standards have been shown to apply more stringently and have greater
effects on women; a 2002 study found that the positive correlation between lighter skin tones and
higher perceived attractiveness was significantly stronger for Black women than for Black men, and
in general, physical appearance is more socially emphasized as a measure of worth for women (Hill,
2002). For this paper, I will explore the ways in which Eurocentric beauty standards affect the self–
esteems and life experiences of women of color who have predominantly lived both in Western and
non–Western countries. The first method I will use is interviews of two self–identified women of
color, one who has lived the majority of their life in a Western country (defined as a country that
historically, throughout the modern era, has been majority–white), and one who has lived the
majority

Yet many fail to see numerous benefits both legal and illegal immigrants bring to the country, and

strenuous it might be, it is difficult living in the US without fear, specially now that there is an

construction workers, child care providers, and those who work in agricultural settings to pick fruits

Medieval Castles the Start of the Modern Age Essay examples
Medieval castles were the start of the modern age. They had forms of government, and everyone had
a specific job. It was, however, still primitive to modern standards, because they still had a King and
Queen and no indoor plumbing. This blend of primitive and modern makes medieval castle life an
interesting and intriguing time to live. A medieval castle usually had five main buildings: The hall,
the kitchen, barracks/living quarters/supply buildings, water rooms, and a chapel. The chapel was
the most influential and sacred place of the entire castle. Usually the chapel would be two stories tall
to separate the royal family from servants. The royal family would be on the second floor while the
servants would be on the ground floor. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The royal family would sit astride him on wooden benches. Most halls were arranged much as a
church was with wooden benches facing the king. The tables that everyone would sit around had
white linen cloth on them and the tables could also be easily removed. If the king was especially
prestigious he would have a stationary table that would never move. The hall often had stone or
wooden pillars the supported its wooden roof and if the hall was on the second floor it was
supported by stone or wooden pillars as well. The floor that these pillars supported was almost
always wooden or if they could afford it stone vaulting. The floor was often wooden and covered in
rushes and herbs that would be changed periodically. Carpet was only used on walls and tables until
the fourteenth century. The windows of the hall were often just wooden shutters although some did
have tinted glass in later time periods. The hall was often the most beautiful and decorated place of
the castle with the church being a close second. The kitchen was the main area for food preparation
and storage. There were often chicken coops, pens, and other locations where animals were kept for
food nearby the kitchen. There were many fruit trees and orchards placed closely as well. The
kitchen usually consisted of several fireplaces with a central hearth where food could

Healthcare and the Modern Age
There have been a great many changes in the healthcare industry in the past two decades, largely
due to the globalization of the workforce and changing demographic patterns, and technological
advances. It was interesting to think about the vast changes occuring in and to look at the ways in
which technology, privacy laws, and stakeholder expectations have changed. The industry changed
in terms of a reliance on hospital–based care to more emergency clinics, outpatient and nursing
home services, and managed care. More hosptitals merged, and many doctor's have banded together
to form larger, more cost–effective, speciality groups. One of the largest and most obvious changes
has been in cost of healthcare. In 1990 the avereage cost of care per person was $2800, rising in
2000 to $4700, and then in 2010 exceeding $7500. In 1990, 14.1% of Americans had no insurance
and in 2010, and additional 50 million people, or 16.3%. Certainly these issues are concerns, but
there have been incredible innovations that have changed the lives of all those involved in the
healthcare industry. For example, doctors can turn their I–phones into an EKG monitor and transmit
data in real time to a cardiologist, will cost less than $100, and will change the way patients interact
with their physicins (Chideya, 2012). For society in general, and especially for physicians and the
medical care industry, technology has driven vast changes in the healthcare environment. Computers

Beauty In The Middle Ages And Modern Pop Culture
What is beauty, anyway? Beauty has varied throughout time, various cultures and the vast different
perceptions of the world. Specifically, the differences between the Middle Ages or the Medieval
Period and Modern Pop Culture are... From fair maidens to today's supermodels, beauty standards
are always changing across time and cultures. Due to culture differences today, I'm going to focus
on American Pop Culture in the past ten years (mainly focusing on the 2010s–present). What
influences our perception of beauty? The clothes, accessories, and make–up we wear and the
hairstyles we have.
Although make–up trends have started to change rapidly, women in the middle ages usually wore
make–up to show their socioeconomic status. Cosmetics in Europe were an elite affair reserved for
the "upper classes". For centuries, those rich enough not to work outdoors wanted to draw contrast
to the suntanned skin of the field hands. Paleness indicated a woman of high birth, so women would
whiten their faces with wheat flour or lead based paints. Women wanted to be pale with plucked
eyebrows, high hairline and round forehead and a rosy glow (used rouge). The ideal of feminine
beauty in a formal description is first seen in the work of Matthew of Vendome. He described Helen
of Troy, "...her hair is golden, forehead white as paper, eyebrows black and thin. The space between
the eyes (in contrast to the Greek ideal) is white and clear, a 'milky way'; the face is a shining star;
the eyes are like stars. She has a little smile, a nose neither too big nor too small. Her face is rosy,
her coloring white and red, like rose and snow. Teeth are like ivory, lips are small, slightly swelling,
honeyed. Her mouth smells like a rose, her neck is smooth, shoulders radiant and well–spaced,
breasts small, and figure incomparable". While today, women's make–up routine is complex using
multiple products. Contrary to the middle ages, women today want to look tan to achieve the
"foreign" look. The trend at its peak (around 2011), resulted in the "tanorexia" (someone who is
addicted to tanning) craze. To achieve looks like beauty icon Kim Kardashian, women use the
technique called "contouring" to make our facial features more defined and smaller. While

Old Age Security And Modern Welfare System
Old age security has long since become a basic building block in any modern welfare system.
Likewise it has long since become a standard element in the battery of expectations held and shared
by citizens towards society. Pension systems are the vehicles by which these expectations are
catered for. Their effectiveness and reliability are extremely important to individuals as well as
societies. [] As reported by the Public Health England (PHE), individuals in the UK are expected to

people above the age of 65 years due to rise by approximately 5.5 million by 2020 and a further 19
million by 2050 according to census in 2010 by the UK government.[] This poses a challenge as it is
reported that 55%, £114bn in 2014/15, of the welfare spending is paid out to pensioners.[] As seen
in the chart above, it is due to further increase and will put more pressure on the public finances –
finances whose strain will fall on the shoulders of small working–age population. This poses a

forecast future lifetime of individuals and 2. Subsequently it is challenging to have sufficient funds

The Modern Age Of Islam
The Islamic world has tried to become strong again through both secularism and religion, with
neither answer showing a complete, absolute advantage over the other. This is shown through Atta
Turk completely removing Islam out of the newly formed Turkish society, the Baath Party's secular
ideology while still committing massacre, and Hezbollah using a radicalized form of religion to gain
political strength.
The beginning of the modern age of Islam can be marked with Napoleon's conquest of Egypt and
the subsequent conquest by Britain. This defeat indicated to the leaders of the Islamic world that not
only were they defeated by a Western power, but also by an inferior Western power. Thus, leaders of
the Islamic world, such as Muhammad Ali and al–Afghani said that to create a successful society,
we must emulate the West to become strong. This ideology held largely throughout the Islamic
world until the creation of Israel. When Israel fought and destroyed Arab nations in the Six Days
War, secular governments were no longer as widely accepted, leading to the creation of Islamic
states and the further progression of Islamic Fundamentalism. Islamic Fundamentalism uses
radicalized Islam, which can usually be traced directly back to Wahhabism, to try and gain power
and political influence over the region through terror. This clearly corrupted thought clashes with the
secular, although also in many cases corrupted, powers of the world. These opposing viewpoints
show that there is no

Cyber Bullying And The Modern Age Essay
The Internet is a major part of the lives of children of this generation, yet most parents do not know
exactly what their children do on the computer. As teenagers socially establish themselves within
peer groups, and involve their parents less and less in their social lives, they are less likely to tell
their parents what they are doing on the internet, or share internet conversations with their family.
This allows cyber bullies to target victims without any repercussions. For the most part, cyber
bullying is much like traditional forms of bullying, except for the fact that they take place online. It
is generally viewed as a normative part of child development, and is done as a means of elevation
one's own social position. As cyber bullying takes place among other forms of bullying in the
modern age research is being done by scientists to learn more about the nature of these aggressive
acts and how to best deal with this problem amongst youth.
Definitions of cyber bullying differ among scholars. In a study of cyber bullying cyber bullying was
described as, "An aggressive, intentional act carried out by a group or individual, using electronic
forms of contact, repeatedly and over time against a victim who cannot easily defend him or herself
" (Smith, et al., 2008). Other experts define cyber bullying as "willful and repeated harm inflicted
through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices" ("Cyberbullying Statistics,
2015). When they speak to students,

Rhetoric And Its Impact On The Modern Electronic Age

According to a Pew Research study, "More than one–third of Americans between the ages of 18 and
25 have tattoos, and 40 percent of those between 26 and 40." With such high numbers, companies
are forced to have detailed rules about body art. While many companies allow employees to show
their tattoos or piercing, a large number of professions still do not allow tattoos or certain types of
body piercing to be exposed. Many companies view visible body modification, in the form of tattoos
and body piercing, as an action that violates the company's dress code. Because of this rule many
employees have lost their jobs without knowing how to prevent it from happening. And according to
Van Buskirk (2005), in 2004 a Costco Wholesaler was sued for religious discrimination when they
fired an employee for not following the company's policy that prohibited the adornment of facial
jewelry. The employee was a member of the Church of Body Modification (CBM) and maintained
that wearing facial jewelry was a practice required by her religion. After investigation of the case, it
was revealed that the employee only joined the Church of Body Modification because Costco had
acquired the dress code that included rules against the display of body art.

Nikola Tesla The Forgotten Father Of The Modern Age
Nikola Tesla: The Forgotten Father of the Modern Age The inventors of this world are artists.
Maybe not in the traditional way of those such as Van Gogh or Beethoven, but they are masters of
creativity nonetheless. Each has had a hand in painting modern society, brushing on improvements,
recreating civilization with newer and better technology, making it more and more superior with
each passing year. One such father of society is Nikola Tesla. Throughout his lifetime, he added
many strokes to the painting of technology. Though his contributions were great, he received very
little recognition for his work, making him the greatest tragic hero of the twentieth century.
Born in 1856 Croatia, Tesla immigrated to America in 1884. Charles Bachelor, a good friend of his,
referred him to Thomas Edison for work. In his letter he said "I know two great men, Edison. One is
you and the other is this young man. From then on, Tesla worked in Edison's labs, improving
designs as they were prepared for patent. One day though, there came a breaking point in their
professional relationship: Edison offered Tesla $50,000 dollars (modern equivalent of $1,000,000) if
he could make improvements to Edison's direct current patents. Within the time of a few months,
Tesla presented a new design with vast improvements. When asked for the money, Edison is said to
have replied: "Tesla, you don't understand our American humor". With that, the young inventor quit.

Accountancy Is An Important Statement In The Modern Age

  • 1. Accountancy Is An Important Statement In The Modern Age Accountancy is a vital element in this modern era as it applies to the society. It is a term that is often used for businesses only but actually can be seen everywhere – from small stores to restaurants, schools , hospitals, individual's own personal day–to–day life. Throughout my IGCSEs I have developed a comprehensive understanding of accounting concepts such as its principles, liquidity management, preparation of financial statements and the importance of validation and control. Because of my keen interest in accounting, I decided to continue study the subject at A–level. What I didn't realize by this decision was the depth of knowledge I was going to gain and how every single concept will become applicable to the real world. I spent most ... • 3. The Modern Age : The Roaring Twenties The Roaring Twenties began in the 1920s. It was known as the Modern Age because it brought changes and innovations. The Roaring Twenties took place right after World War I. Millions of people died and it was a horrible event. Soldiers returned and everyone went through a hard time. People wanted to forget this catastrophic event so when they returned they tried to forget the past and live the moment. Many wanted to to enjoy themselves, they began to value convenience and leisure over hard work and denial. World War I brought changes. People started to drink, party, and enjoying life. However, the 1920s was not only butterflies and rainbows. It was a really hard time for farmers, women, African Americans, and immigrants. The Roaring Twenties was also known as the age of consumerism. There was a lot of spending. The United States was a wealthy country with a high standard of living. People thought bigger and more was better. They made expenses to buy big houses and great cars. Everyone wanted to live lavishly. Many cities like New York and Chicago grew rapidly. Skyscrapers were being built. A lot of it was because of transportation. People started to move from rural areas to cities and towns. There was a lot of innovations. Women had more independence and more freedom to wear the latest fashions like mini–skirts. They started to show off more skin and wearing makeup. Furthermore, women were giving the right to vote when the 19th amendment was passed in 1920. During World War ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Positive And Negative Effects Of Privacy In The Modern... Summary: In the modern age, almost everything that happens in our everyday lives is stored in computers in the form of bits, or a combination of ones and zeros. However, as with any new technology, the explosion of bits has both positive and negative side effects. Some positive effects include increased work efficiency and an increased access to knowledge, while many of the negative effects have to deal with privacy. There are seven basic truths about bits that are referred to as "koans" because they are slightly paradoxical in nature. First, even though a computer gives the impression of displaying an image or playing an audio file, everything it does is simply a combination of ones and zeros. Secondly, computers are essentially the only things capable of creating a perfect copy, and they have the ability to copy things perfectly millions of times over. Third, information that is stored outside of the internet has basically become useless in today's society, and even information stored on obsolete hardware is of no use to anyone. Fourth, the processing power of computers has been growing exponentially every year since 1965, and this has paved the way for countless new inventions and applications of computers. Fifth, the explosive nature of the growth of computers can make or break companies over the span of only a couple years. It all depends on how an existing company can react and adapt to new technological innovations. Sixth, nothing ever disappears from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Modern Age The Modern Age appeared when people began to evolve from medieval times, lasting throughout the centuries and into today's society. It's not about birth anymore; who you were born to doesn't matter. People are given so much more freedom than in the feudal times because compared to the Middle Ages, when brute force was dominant, the Modern Age is based upon what people can do, intellectually more so than physically; which lets them become anything they want. But when did this starting happening? Who began all this? I believe that the three key people who set the Modern Age into motion was Leonardo Da Vinci, Isaac Newton, and Mary Wollstonecraft, because of their traits, their environments around them, and because of the lasting effect their ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Leonardo Da Vinci was a man of great curiosity, passion, persistence, and innovation. His curiosity led him to try his hand at many fields, resulting in many different experiences that nicknamed him "The Renaissance Man." He tried his hand in many sciences, but particularly at aerodynamics, where he created countless designs for a flying machine because he desperately wanted to fly. As each design failed, his persistence rose; he would begin to work on his next concept after observing how they failed, and then try his third concept and his fourth concept, never tiring out or giving up. Da Vinci's passions were spread throughout his many fields. In art, he included many techniques the Middle Ages hadn't created yet, like sfumato and chiaroscuro. His artwork depicted humanism, individualism, secularism, realism, and mannerism, which began in the Renaissance; people began to value and focus on themselves, showing pride in who they were by getting self–portraits. The morals of people shifted from being humble and caring about their next life to selfish and trying to make the most of this life. In the religious art Da Vinci does, it shows how people were equal with God and other religious figures, as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Steam Railway And The Invention Of The Modern Age The steam railway was a significant invention in the development of the modern age. I believe that the steam engine was the most important invention to come from the industrial revolution. The expansion of the railway system across the United States and the world influenced how we live our lives today. Throughout the industrial revolution the steam railway reduced the time it took for freight to reach its final destination, expanded the reach people could sell products too, provided a safer transport compared to horses, along with countless other things. The steam railway better connected people and helped fuel the second industrial revolution. Without it our world might look a lot different than it does today. First, the steam railway ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Subsequently, the steam railway saved fifty thousand working days of ten hours each was saved. This translates to me as a huge savings in time and money to travel. This is also assuming that people are only saving just 1 hour. Cars were not around at this time, so if people traveling were going further than this the number of hours saved might be exponentially bigger than what was estimated. Britain is much a significantly smaller country than that of the United States, and if it took into consideration the time is would take to travel by horse across the country compared to steam railway the time would be tremendously bigger. This time saved could be more than human savings it could also mean the reduction it takes cargo to travel by railways compared to horses. Consequently, cargo would also arrive safer because roads during this time were not like what they were today. Often times the horse cart would break a wheel or get stuck in the mud. Roads at this time were not reliable and were not always well maintained. Also, this would lead to construction projects taking much less time than it previously would. This once more would save time in how long the project took, and save money paying workers to build the project. Overall, this savings in time , safer cargo travel, and overall improvements in the quality of life shaped by the steam railway system would be felt for numerous years to ... • 11. Essay about Architect of the Modern Age Frank Gehry is a world renowned architect known for several important buildings such as the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. He was born in Toronto Canada February 28, 1929 but moved with his family to Los Angeles, California in 1947(1). Gehry attended the University of Southern California and graduated in 1954 with a degree in architecture (1). In 1962, he established his own architectural firm in 1962 now called Gehry Partners, LLP (1). In the beginning, Gehry used the International Style of architecture (1) but it did not suit him well because those type of building had a stark, unornamented appearance so over time he was able to create his own style that greatly contrasts with the International Style. Ten of the galleries have an orthogonal plan and have the exterior limestone walls and the other nine galleries are irregularly designed and have the exterior titanium walls (4). The last gallery is the largest at 3900 square meters which now houses the largest sculpture commission in history, Richard Serra's The Matter of Time. The creation of this construction was made possible by the use of the technologically advanced 3D design computer program called Catia (5). This program significantly assisted Gehry in modeling the Guggenheim so that he would not have any future problems in construction. Critics of the Guggenheim feel that although the museum is iconic it fails as a public place because it does not reflect and support the civilization, culture and finances of Bilbao (6). Nevertheless, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao is the zenith of Gehry's architectural career. Another masterpiece of Gehry is the Walt Disney Concert Hall located in Los Angeles. It is located on a historically (Bunker Hill) and culturally prominent downtown site adjoining the existing Music Center of Los Angeles (7). It all started in 1987 when the late Lillian Disney, wife of the late Walt Disney, made an initial contribution of $50 million to build a first–class performance venue as a gift to the people of Los Angeles and as homage to Walt Disney's zeal to the arts (8). • 13. College In The Modern Age. Throughout The First Unit We College in The Modern Age Throughout the first unit we have explored the reasons as to why college may not be the best fit for some. I believe that, like a majority of children, I was raised on the basis that a college degree was needed to be successful. Many may think of higher education as a giant Ponzi scheme, where students are lured into the promise of receiving high–paying jobs due to the fact they attended University. Today I realize that a college degree isn't a guarantee that you'll be successful rather it is a way to gain the edge against peers. In this paper, I am going to further evaluate why college was the best fit for me, and how I came to that conclusion. Foremost, obtaining an undergraduate degree was presented to me by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I believe that we need someone to step in and provide the training that is required to high school counselors on other options besides college. Fortunately, enough I attended a high school where the counselors were trained on giving students other options besides college. A close friend who knew college wasn't the right option for him was given information about different apprenticeships he could apply for after college. He is currently a welder and thinks that he has made one of the greatest decisions of his life. Moreover, While I was in high school preparing to apply for college, I would often see some of my fellow peers struggling to figure out how they would fit the bill for University. As I first began to apply to the big–name universities I was noticing the very steep prices, with little financial aid help. I knew I could obtain various scholarships, however that isn't the case for most students. Mike Rowe stated that "There is a trillion dollars in debt on the student loan side. That is over five–hundred times the rate of inflation it beats healthcare by over two–hundred and fifty trillion dollars." I think that student loans are single–handedly the biggest opposition to many students attending University. In my personal opinion, many students choose to follow the things that they are passionate about, but ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern Age When the word "Mongol" is said I automatically think negative thoughts about uncultured, barbaric people who are horribly cruel and violent. That is only because I have only heard the word used to describe such a person. I have never really registered any initial information I have been taught about the subject pass the point of needing and having to know it. I felt quite incompetent on the subject and once I was given an assignment on the book, Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern Age, I was very perplexed for two reasons. One I have to read an outside book for a class that already requires a substantial amount of time reading the text, and secondly I have to write a research paper in History. I got over it and read the book, which surprisingly enough interested me a great deal and allow me to see the Moguls for more than just a barbaric group of Neanderthals, but rather a group of purpose driven warriors with a common goal of unity and progression. Jack Weatherford's work has given me insight on and swayed my opinion of the Mongols. Jack Weatherford showed great enthusiasm and passion while depicting Genghis Khan as a great leader, who was responsible for the unity of people and various other accomplishments. He had a very positive attitude toward the subject, although he didn't set out to write a book about him, but rather on about the history of world commerce. • 17. Defining Victory Of The Modern Age Of Warfare Words Matter: Defining Victory in the Modern Age of Warfare The United States has not stopped winning wars but the nature of both war and victory has changed. Adjusting to an evolving geopolitical environment, since World War II the U.S. has changed the reasons it employs military force and the types of wars it wages. Taken within the context of the each conflict's era, the U.S. has met with mixed results in each conflict but ultimately has emerged victorious. Defining Victory What is victory? In order to understand victory and defeat it is important to consider the national objectives that governed each conflict. Since World War II, the U.S. has participated in five major conflicts (Korea, Vietnam, Dessert Storm, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan). In each of these conflicts, the U.S. demonstrated military superiority. However, unlike previous wars, these wars resulted in mixed results based on the specific political and military objectives of the time. Korea initiated the policy of containment that defined the Cold War struggle between the U.S. and the Soviet Union. While the conflict's objectives changed multiple times, the coalition met the initial objective to prevent the spread of communism on the Korean Peninsula. In Vietnam, while the aim was the same the results were very different. The U.S. was unable to force a political compromise that prevented the fall of Democratic South Vietnam. The Semaphore system of flags or flashing lights was used to send messages over a moderate distance where traveling was difficult. The compromise called for the withdraw of federal troops in the southern states, promised that a southern would be appointed as Postmaster General, offered the south federal subsidies, and in return, Rutherford Hayes would become president, and reconstruction would officially be over (Peskin). The closing of one chapter lead to a new one: the birth of modern America., the Gilded Age. Major changes were taking place in the country, almost all being a result of the rapid industrialization that was taking place. Cities thrived with people, most seeking out work. Inventions flourished, light flooded the streets with the widespread availability of electricity and the lightbulb. Time were definitely changing, especially within the social classes of America. The changes effected the classes in many different ways: the wealthy suddenly became wealthier, and the middle class moved up in the ranks, as well. The same could not be said for the lower classes, though, particularly the working–class. For them, times were tough, poverty was widespread and conditions were unsafe in almost any environment they inhabited. Despite the industrial revolution being a positive for many of the social classes in America, it was very detrimental to the working–class in that it lead to urbanization and overcrowding of cities, many people taking jobs in dangerous factories, and a seemingly disorganized family life. Odysseus is Not a Hero for the Modern Age Essay Many would argue that Odysseus is more of a villain nowadays, for every instance of his wiliness or feats of strength there are several of venality, vice, cruelty, or selfishness. The episode of the Sirens, (Book 12), is one example. The only reason Odysseus ties himself up to the mast, when instead he could have simply plugged his ears with wax like the rest of his crew, is that he chooses the jeopardous choice, wanting to "go down in the books" by being the first man to ever listen to the Sirens song and live. Although Red Rooms tales are a fairly recent trend, first widely appearing in 2014 and largely picking up interest in 2015 (Figure C) they can be seen as the evolution of prior murder myths and speak to societal fears both contemporary and old. Red Rooms are supposedly found on an underground segment of the internet referred to as the "dark web". The dark web itself is a real entity, and can only be accessed through a special browser called the Tor browser (Roy, "Everything"). The Age Of Imperialism And Its Effects On The Modern World It is reasonably hard to measure the extent of the influence that imperialism has had on the contemporary world, at least due to the fact that imperialism shaped the appearance of the modern world, starting from the name of places and geographical boundaries, to the establishment of a globalized economic system. Accordingly, European colonization has left its mark on many parts of the world, especially by providing a strong foundation for the formation of a cultural universalization, substantial changes in the education system, an occurrence of a language hierarchy, and the emergence of a world economic system (Osterhammel and Petersson 2005, pg. 73–77). Through altered societal structures, a restricted access to education, substantial changes to the cultural values of colonized countries, and the special division of the labor market, the age of imperialism has had an outsized impact on the modern developing world, perhaps more than any other particular age. • 55. Eurocentric Beauty Standards In The Western And Modern Age It is a generally accepted principle that societies create standards of beauty, wherein certain features, qualities, or traits are posited as more attractive and desirable. These beauty standards differ among historical periods and localities and are disseminated through media, literature, and other forms of communication. In the modern era, beauty standards have often been found to be Eurocentric, which I define to mean ideals of beauty that correlate with and enforce whiteness (e.g. light skin, large eyes, thin noses, straight hair) and are the result of historical processes that contextualize whiteness as superior. Such beauty standards have been shown to apply more stringently and have greater effects on women; a 2002 study found that the positive correlation between lighter skin tones and higher perceived attractiveness was significantly stronger for Black women than for Black men, and in general, physical appearance is more socially emphasized as a measure of worth for women (Hill, 2002). For this paper, I will explore the ways in which Eurocentric beauty standards affect the self– esteems and life experiences of women of color who have predominantly lived both in Western and non–Western countries. The first method I will use is interviews of two self–identified women of color, one who has lived the majority of their life in a Western country (defined as a country that historically, throughout the modern era, has been majority–white), and one who has lived the majority ... Healthcare and the Modern Age There have been a great many changes in the healthcare industry in the past two decades, largely due to the globalization of the workforce and changing demographic patterns, and technological advances. It was interesting to think about the vast changes occuring in and to look at the ways in which technology, privacy laws, and stakeholder expectations have changed. The industry changed in terms of a reliance on hospital–based care to more emergency clinics, outpatient and nursing home services, and managed care. More hosptitals merged, and many doctor's have banded together to form larger, more cost–effective, speciality groups. One of the largest and most obvious changes has been in cost of healthcare. In 1990 the avereage cost of care per person was $2800, rising in 2000 to $4700, and then in 2010 exceeding $7500. Certainly these issues are concerns, but there have been incredible innovations that have changed the lives of all those involved in the healthcare industry. For example, doctors can turn their I–phones into an EKG monitor and transmit data in real time to a cardiologist, will cost less than $100, and will change the way patients interact with their physicins (Chideya, 2012). • 65. Beauty In The Middle Ages And Modern Pop Culture What is beauty, anyway? Beauty has varied throughout time, various cultures and the vast different perceptions of the world. Specifically, the differences between the Middle Ages or the Medieval Period and Modern Pop Culture are... From fair maidens to today's supermodels, beauty standards are always changing across time and cultures. Due to culture differences today, I'm going to focus on American Pop Culture in the past ten years (mainly focusing on the 2010s–present). What influences our perception of beauty? The clothes, accessories, and make–up we wear and the hairstyles we have. Although make–up trends have started to change rapidly, women in the middle ages usually wore make–up to show their socioeconomic status. Cosmetics in Europe were an elite affair reserved for the "upper classes". For centuries, those rich enough not to work outdoors wanted to draw contrast to the suntanned skin of the field hands. Paleness indicated a woman of high birth, so women would whiten their faces with wheat flour or lead based paints. Women wanted to be pale with plucked eyebrows, high hairline and round forehead and a rosy glow (used rouge). The ideal of feminine beauty in a formal description is first seen in the work of Matthew of Vendome. He described Helen of Troy, "...her hair is golden, forehead white as paper, eyebrows black and thin. The space between the eyes (in contrast to the Greek ideal) is white and clear, a 'milky way'; the face is a shining star; the eyes are like stars. She has a little smile, a nose neither too big nor too small. Her face is rosy, her coloring white and red, like rose and snow. Teeth are like ivory, lips are small, slightly swelling, honeyed. Her mouth smells like a rose, her neck is smooth, shoulders radiant and well–spaced, breasts small, and figure incomparable". While today, women's make–up routine is complex using multiple products. Contrary to the middle ages, women today want to look tan to achieve the "foreign" look. The trend at its peak (around 2011), resulted in the "tanorexia" (someone who is addicted to tanning) craze. To achieve looks like beauty icon Kim Kardashian, women use the technique called "contouring" to make our facial features more defined and smaller. While ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Old Age Security And Modern Welfare System Old age security has long since become a basic building block in any modern welfare system. Likewise it has long since become a standard element in the battery of expectations held and shared by citizens towards society. Pension systems are the vehicles by which these expectations are catered for. Their effectiveness and reliability are extremely important to individuals as well as societies. [] As reported by the Public Health England (PHE), individuals in the UK are expected to live longer than before – the population of the UK is ageing. Men can now expect to live for a further 19 years at age 65, 12 years at 75, 6 years at 85 and 3 years at 95 Women can expect to live for a further 21 years at age 65, 13 years at 75, 7 years at 85, and 3 years at 95 With 10 million people above the age of 65 years due to rise by approximately 5.5 million by 2020 and a further 19 million by 2050 according to census in 2010 by the UK government.[] This poses a challenge as it is reported that 55%, £114bn in 2014/15, of the welfare spending is paid out to pensioners.[] As seen in the chart above, it is due to further increase and will put more pressure on the public finances – finances whose strain will fall on the shoulders of small working–age population. This poses a challenge not only for the government, but also for the individuals as: 1. It poses a challenge to forecast future lifetime of individuals and 2. Subsequently it is challenging to have sufficient funds in place for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. The Modern Age Of Islam The Islamic world has tried to become strong again through both secularism and religion, with neither answer showing a complete, absolute advantage over the other. This is shown through Atta Turk completely removing Islam out of the newly formed Turkish society, the Baath Party's secular ideology while still committing massacre, and Hezbollah using a radicalized form of religion to gain political strength. The beginning of the modern age of Islam can be marked with Napoleon's conquest of Egypt and the subsequent conquest by Britain. This defeat indicated to the leaders of the Islamic world that not only were they defeated by a Western power, but also by an inferior Western power. Thus, leaders of the Islamic world, such as Muhammad Ali and al–Afghani said that to create a successful society, we must emulate the West to become strong. This ideology held largely throughout the Islamic world until the creation of Israel. When Israel fought and destroyed Arab nations in the Six Days War, secular governments were no longer as widely accepted, leading to the creation of Islamic states and the further progression of Islamic Fundamentalism. Islamic Fundamentalism uses radicalized Islam, which can usually be traced directly back to Wahhabism, to try and gain power and political influence over the region through terror. This clearly corrupted thought clashes with the secular, although also in many cases corrupted, powers of the world. These opposing viewpoints show that there is no ... • 71. Cyber Bullying And The Modern Age Essay The Internet is a major part of the lives of children of this generation, yet most parents do not know exactly what their children do on the computer. As teenagers socially establish themselves within peer groups, and involve their parents less and less in their social lives, they are less likely to tell their parents what they are doing on the internet, or share internet conversations with their family. This allows cyber bullies to target victims without any repercussions. For the most part, cyber bullying is much like traditional forms of bullying, except for the fact that they take place online. It is generally viewed as a normative part of child development, and is done as a means of elevation one's own social position. As cyber bullying takes place among other forms of bullying in the modern age research is being done by scientists to learn more about the nature of these aggressive acts and how to best deal with this problem amongst youth. Definitions of cyber bullying differ among scholars. In a study of cyber bullying cyber bullying was described as, "An aggressive, intentional act carried out by a group or individual, using electronic forms of contact, repeatedly and over time against a victim who cannot easily defend him or herself " (Smith, et al., 2008). Other experts define cyber bullying as "willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices" ("Cyberbullying Statistics, 2015). Acceptance of Tattoos and Body Piercing in a Modern Age Acceptance of Tattoos and Body Piercing in a Modern Age Andrew Sullivan Axia College of University of Phoenix According to the most recent Harris Poll, which took place in 2003, about 15% of all Americans have at least one tattoo. That translates into about 40 million people. Tattoos are becoming much more popular based on comparing those statistics to the results of a 1936 Life magazine estimates of 10 million Americans had at least one tattoo. As for body piercing, no statistics are kept, and it is unknown how many Americans have them, but healthcare providers and dentists say they are seeing more everyday. Even though most tattoos and body piercing were difficult to adorn in the past because of the discrimination against and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to a Pew Research study, "More than one–third of Americans between the ages of 18 and 25 have tattoos, and 40 percent of those between 26 and 40." With such high numbers, companies are forced to have detailed rules about body art. While many companies allow employees to show their tattoos or piercing, a large number of professions still do not allow tattoos or certain types of body piercing to be exposed. Many companies view visible body modification, in the form of tattoos and body piercing, as an action that violates the company's dress code. Because of this rule many employees have lost their jobs without knowing how to prevent it from happening. And according to Van Buskirk (2005), in 2004 a Costco Wholesaler was sued for religious discrimination when they fired an employee for not following the company's policy that prohibited the adornment of facial jewelry. The employee was a member of the Church of Body Modification (CBM) and maintained that wearing facial jewelry was a practice required by her religion. After investigation of the case, it was revealed that the employee only joined the Church of Body Modification because Costco had acquired the dress code that included rules against the display of body art. Along with employers being accepting of an employee's tattoo or body piercing, there is also the customer or client who must be accepting of the body art. These ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 79. Nikola Tesla The Forgotten Father Of The Modern Age Nikola Tesla: The Forgotten Father of the Modern Age The inventors of this world are artists. Maybe not in the traditional way of those such as Van Gogh or Beethoven, but they are masters of creativity nonetheless. Each has had a hand in painting modern society, brushing on improvements, recreating civilization with newer and better technology, making it more and more superior with each passing year. One such father of society is Nikola Tesla. Throughout his lifetime, he added many strokes to the painting of technology. Though his contributions were great, he received very little recognition for his work, making him the greatest tragic hero of the twentieth century. Born in 1856 Croatia, Tesla immigrated to America in 1884. Charles Bachelor, a good friend of his, referred him to Thomas Edison for work. In his letter he said "I know two great men, Edison. One is you and the other is this young man. From then on, Tesla worked in Edison's labs, improving designs as they were prepared for patent. One day though, there came a breaking point in their professional relationship: Edison offered Tesla $50,000 dollars (modern equivalent of $1,000,000) if he could make improvements to Edison's direct current patents. Within the time of a few months, Tesla presented a new design with vast improvements. When asked for the money, Edison is said to have replied: "Tesla, you don't understand our American humor". With that, the young inventor quit. Let there be no doubt in history: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
