Questionnaire results
1. Questionnaire
Results
After publishing my questionnaire for research
purposes, 27 different people then completed
it, here are my results…
2. What gender are you?
From this image, it is clear to see a higher percentage of males completed my
questionnaire as to females. Two further people also didn’t wish to state their
gender, the final ratio standing at 17:8.
The question was asked so I could record what sex were answering my questions,
which would then enable me to discover if there was any patterns of responses
within the gender group.
3. What is your age?
This is another important question, as it allows me to see how different age groups and
target audiences respond to my questions and give me a scope to discover if there is
any pattern between answers.
From this, you can clearly see that my responses predominantly came from 15-19 year
olds, and in more general terms, younger people. This again will allow me to find what
different younger people think, as well as comparing their answers to those of the older
age groups.
4. What is your occupation?
This question was put out there so I could link it to their social demographic profile and
whether this seemingly has any impact on answers, for example what genre of music
they listen to
A wide range of occupations were given as answers, which has allowed me to reach
out and conduct my research with a diverse range of people, ranging from students to
Business Consultant’s.
5. How often do you watch music
videos?
Again, this question allowed me to delve in to how popular music videos are and
what part they have in people’s lives.
As you can see from the stats below, music videos are very popular and most
people watch them at least a week. I was however surprised to discover 19% of
the people who answered the questionnaire watch music videos less than once
a month, my surprise comes from the fact they are so accessible.
6. How do you access music videos?
This question again allows me to gage how people watch music videos and
just gives me more knowledge of the target audience, with youtube, tv
channels and mobile devices being extremely popular
As you can see, Youtube was the most popular answer, with the younger age
brackets especially choosing this, along with tv channels.
7. What genres do you tend to listen
to or watch?
This question was published to help me discover which genres are the most popular,
so that I can then base my video around a song of a popular genre
The most commonly watched/listened to genre was pop, with 16 people choosing
this option. Rock and Indie were also very popular options with RnB also being fairly
viewed. This also allows me to link music styles to age, gender and social class again
and build knowledge of the audience.
8. What do you like to see in music
videos?
This question is very important as it allows me to use what people like within my own
music video.
Narratives were the most popular with 14 votes, with the other elements also seeming
popular. This allows me to choose between any of these sorts of video, or it even gives
me the option to incorporate a few of them In to my own project.
9. Do you believe issues should be
raised through music videos to raise
awareness?
Again, this question was an important one within my research as some of my ideas
would be shaped around these subjects, and therefore I wanted to discover if people
thought it was a positive idea.
As you can see, 74% of the responses state that issues should be shown through music
videos, which then gives me more impetus to embed this in to my own video with
confidence surrounding my idea.
10. Do you believe music videos
directly impact on the success of a
song?
This is another question which is interesting as it allows me to see if people view
music videos as being an important element to a song.
Over half of the participants in the questionnaire believe that music videos do
directly impact on success, and I therefore aspire to make mine high quality. 6
people also stated they were not entirely sure, along with 5 people saying they
aren’t directly linked to success.
11. What do you think about music
videos that contain a narrative
linking to the lyrics?
“Those narratives seem to be more intriguing and have more of a purpose.”
“Leads to more of an incentive for the audience to keep listening to the end of the
song.”
“It helps people to understand the song more.”
“Depends on context/theme but can be successful.”
“it helps to explain the song and what message it wishes to portray.”
“If they tell the story then that's fair enough, but are we listening to music or watching
a tv programme?”
12. What do you think about music
videos that are original, individual
and sometimes controversial?
“There are the ones that succeed.”
“I like them, good to see something different.”
“These videos often get the most 'viral' attention on the internet.”
“Depends on the controversy. A potentially far-reaching audience …”
“They help the song to stand out more as it is backed by a unique video.”
“There is a place for them but i just don’t know where.”
13. What do you think of music videos
that focus on the artist?
“They can be good, depending on the way it is filmed and edited.”
“Ok as they allow people to feel close to artist, but can be boring..”
“Makes more sense than something unrelated to the band.”
“The video usually reflects how the artist feels, making the song more tense.”
“Easy watching.”
“Boring and can cause me to be uninterested .”
“Depends on the song or the story behind the lyrics.”
14. What would you most like to see in
a music video of your choice? ie if
you could create one
“A storyline and staging to reflect the lyrics .”
“People having a good time but alternatively people living in hard conditions to show
both ends of life's spectrum.”
“Different locations to the conventional night clubs.”
“A narrative which relates to experiences, or comedy.”
“Raising awareness for everyday issues i.e bullying.”
“I'm more likely to watch the video if I'm new to that artist, so an artist focused or
interesting narrative linking to the lyrics would hold my interest more.”
15. What is your favourite music video
of all time, and why?
“Guns 'N' Roses - November Rain because it narrates the song really well, grips me.”
“Probably Stacey's mum has got it going on, as it is funny and is relatable.”
“Live aid drive by the cars - powerful imagery.”
“Coldplay - The Scientist; one of the few where the music and story relate together (I
think)”
“Thriller - Michael Jackson. Epic in so many ways. Music, dancing, storyline.”
“Ed sheeran - The A Team due to the fact it is a narrative which surrounds a very
common issue.”
Bayside - Think that the time has come - the video is controversial, but with though
can actually link with segments of the video, despite it not telling much of a narrative
linked to the lyrics.”
“Arctic monkeys - cornerstone. It's a Simplistic video .”
