2. How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary
texts?
3. I knew when I started to create my digipak that it had to
look like the music video did with the same style and the
same colours so that people could easily identify it. To do
this I used a lot of the photos from the music video shoot
and took some when we were filming the actual music
video so that they would be of use to me when it came to
the ancillary task. The digipak was effectively a
‘promotion package’ for the band’s single, hence it has to
look like it was related to the music video somehow. This
was done by me to make sure that the CD cover and the
magazine article all had some elements of the music
video in it. To do this I chose the woods as the main
background of my CD cover and
also mug shots of the band to
include in my magazine article. I
also changed the elements with
regards to the contrast and the
brightness to make sure that the
promo package had the same
theme to it as the music video did
– dark and dreary.
4. Had I not done this then the digipak
would’ve given a completely different
atmosphere than the music video. This
then brings me onto theory and how
there isn’t a specific theory when it
comes to digipak and music video but it
does require you to be able to attract the
right audience with the genre. My music
video is a rock music video and therefore
the generic conventions of a rock music
video is dark lighting and a band
performance – both of which are
portrayed in my digipak as the
instruments set up on the back of the CD
cover and the mug shots of the band on
the magazine article. This also represents
the band in a way because it gives the
audience a taste of what type of music
the band is like. For example – someone
who is interested in rock music wouldn’t
be interested in a pop music video
magazine article where there are lots of
bright colours as it may not catch their
eye.
5. Audiences for rock music videos usually notice a
darker pattern when it comes to magazine articles and
CD covers as they have to double check to make sure
that it is a band that they’re interested in because rock
bands do not have a very distinctive look. This allows
marketers to be able to attract their audiences if they
have to make the person, say, walking past a shop
window and having to look twice to make sure it isn’t
a band that they’re interested in. When they look, they
may suddenly be interested in that band if they look
like another band that are similar. I have done this
with my magazine advert and my CD cover.
6. An example of a CD cover that is the same colour
theme as the music video is Fall Out Boy’s ‘My Songs
Know What You Did in the Dark’ where the CD cover
is the vinyl records burning and that is what they did
in their music video. This catches the eye of the
consumer because it is noticeable and makes them
look twice.
