The document discusses the effectiveness of combining a music video with ancillary text materials like a digipak and magazine advertisement. The ancillary text uses a black and white theme and photos from locations in the music video to link the materials and immerse fans. Most photos are black and white to match the video, except the last photo which is in color to reference the end of the video. The magazine ad also uses a black and white theme and features a photo directly relating to the song's themes of alcohol, depression, and loneliness to promote the song.
1. How effective is the combination of
your main product and ancillary
text?
Evaluation Question 2
2. While I was constructing and researching for my ancillary text, I came across a
pattern throughout artists magazines/covers; Black and white filter. I already had
the idea of black and white for my ancillary text, and this further helped me make
my decision. However, be doing what a lot of others artists do is something that
goes against my conventions within the music video, but it suits the whole project,
so I’m choose to go with it.
The black and white theme matches
the tone and concept that Kendrick
Lamar is actually going for on his
album; a dark, bleak and down
sound. This is shown by the shown
pictures that are off of videos of his
songs and of other similar artists.
3. My ancillary text consisted of various
different locations and areas that are
relevant and link to the music video. All
the digipak pictures that I’ve took are
all locations that are actually in the
video, therefore linking the text to the
video. All the digipak pictures bar one
are in black and white and the
reasoning behind this is because that
the music video is all in black and white
bar the last shot, which is in colour,
thus why I made one digipak picture in
colour.
By having the locations that I used in
the video in my digipaks and magazine
advert, it immerses and helps make it
easier for fans to relate with the
various ancillary media. Furthermore,
by using the techniques to link the
media together, it gets more attraction
as moist hip-hop artists tend to follow
the same style, therefore fans know
what to look out for.
The back cover is meant to be a simple picture as the
back is where the songs are located on the digipak. By
having a layered back, it would take away from the
information on the back.
The front cover is similar to that of
the back, where all the picture is
meant to do is basically summarise
the context within the song/album
and by having a visual on the front
sump up the general message, it
helps the audience decide
whether or not they want to listen
to the album.
The inside flap I decided had the
purpose of having just one sole
image, in which would contrast with
the rest of the digipak by being in
colour as well as having no text. This
also links to the concept of the song
of being depressed/alone.
The disc cover I believed needed a
picture with a solid background and
a simple picture with just the letter
of the song. A simplistic cover for
the disc I thought is necessary and
there was no need for it to be overly
edited or complicated.
4. When It comes to my magazine advert, I tried to follow similar
conventions as I did with my digipak, however I was aiming to make the
advert look unique within the genre and audience it’s appealing to.
With the song and album I’m promoting the song for, I chose to stick
with the black and white tint, keeping the deep and bland look which is
what I’m going for. What I did however was make the magazine ad to
have a picture which further correlates and directly links to the song
and albums theme; Alcohol, depression and loneliness. With the
picture being my actor alone, with just a bottle of alcohol beside hi, it
passes on the message that the songs have, and with this visual, it
further backs up the topic of the song.
So by having my magazine and digipak both use typical media
conventions in order to promote and visually show what the
album/song is going to be like, it helps relate to the genre it’s intended
to be part of. Yet I used a select few conventions as I believed that by
going against the majority of the generic Hip-Hop clichés, it would help
engage and interest the audience.
