3. THEMES AND IMAGERY
There is a repeated theme between the poster, digipak and the
music video and that is the puzzle pieces. The song “Without You” is
about a breakup so the puzzle pieces are a metaphor for the male
protagonist being incomplete without the female protagonist. So in
the music video the male protagonist follows the puzzle pieces and
therefore I incorporated this idea into my digipak and poster by
scattering them about the poster and through out the digipak. This
creates a clever link between the music video and the poster +
digipak.
I also used the lead singer as the picture on the digipak and poster
and he is wearing the same clothes in the music video, this not only
creates brand identity but conforms to Goodwin’s star theory.
However my music video doesn’t just include the lead singer, it also
includes the guitarist so I included him on the inside of my digipak
on a polaroid photo to keep my album looking unique and weird, a
convention of indie genre. I also used the same image on the poster
and the digipak so people could make a connection between the
poster and digipak, so being see the poster they are then more
likely to go and buy the album.
I chose for the lead singer to not be looking into any of my shots of
my digipak/poster as it creates a sense of mystery and doesn’t give
the audience an inside look at the artists life according to Goodwins
notion of looking, this therefore conforms to the indie genre
4. THEMES AND IMAGERY
I followed the uses of gratifications findings in my audience
research I needed to portray an idea of escapism and self identity.
I achieved this by creating an aesthetic digipak and poster as the
mix of colours is easy on the eyes just like how I used interesting
shots to make the narrative immersive. The denim jacket used in
my music video and poster also helps portray the identity of indie
music as I believe it is one of the most iconic objects of indie
genre. However its difficult to remove the audience from reality
with my poster and digipak in order for them to achieve escapism
from reality, but it was a lot easier to achieve in my music video
and I hope it helps relieve them from stress, even if it is just for 3
mins. I achieved this by using cinematic shots.
The ashtray seen on the digipak also links into the music video as
not only is there a scene to a cigarette getting lit, the guitarist
also has a cigarette in his mouth during the start of the
performance so this can be seen as a link. As well as conforming
to the indie conventions of not caring. My music video can be
seen as slightly confusing so I wanted my digipak reflect this so it
has quirky by have weird pictures such as the polaroid photo, the
bottle cap and the ash tray. Just like the digipak I analysed,
“young chasers” by circa waves.
5. LOGO AND FONT
The logo for circa waves I recreated based on their older logo as I
wanted to continue building up brand loyalty. I used it both my
poster and digipak as well. The logo looking like it has been stuck on
like paper really gives a quirky feel to the pieces just like I hope the
music video does. The logo again reflects the scruffy style of indie
music. I also contained the logos from various social medias allowing
the audience to make a connection with the band through social
media.
The font I chose to use look like hand writing to compliment the
logo. The font is sweet as its simplistic and compliments the rest as
that too is simplistic. The font looks like it has just been written on
which again reflect the low budget convention of the indie genre and
my music video. The text is not that noticeable from a distance
because I want the audience to see the lead singer first, again
conforming to Goodwin’s star theory. Then I want the audience to see
the circa waves logo before finally seeing the name of the album and
other information. I used the same logo and text on both pieces to
help build up the bands identity and to turn them from separate
pieces into one which would encourage the audience to but the
album instead of just watch the music video or stream the music.
6. COLOURS
My digipack follows a certain colour theme, you have the cream
coloured background and then the light blue of the denim
jacket. The dull cream colour creates a nice contrast for all other
colours within my designs. The text is white so it stands out
enough against the cream but doesn’t create much contrast so it
looks subtle and enhances the contrast of the denim jacket
which I want to be the centre of attention, as the denim jacket is
an icon of indie music in my opinion. This colour scheme is
carried out across my poster and digipak which builds up brand
identity. The colour scheme also relates to my music video as
the lead singer is wearing the same blue denim jacket.
The colour scheme is important as it makes each individual
product into a package and therefore attracting more people to
buy the album and watch the music video rather than just watch
the music vide.
Overall I believe that the combination of my main product and
ancillary texts was effective at creating a brand identity,
therefore easily allowing the audience to identify the band and
that it is of the indie genre.
7. AUDIENCE
Within my audience survey I found that my audience watched music videos in
order to create an identity according to Katz and Blumlers theory of gratifications.
Therefore it was important for me to create a consistent and strong brand across
all my products allowing my audience to create an identity. And by meeting the
audiences needs they are less likely to stop watching my music video and more
likely to purchase the album.
The enigma and suspense I created within my music video such as hiding the
message spelled out and making the male protagonist follow a trail also helped to
stop the audience from switching off my music video.
