The document discusses how various ancillary texts like a music video, magazine advertisement, poster, and CD cover work together to promote an independent folk rock band called The Bible Code Sundays. Specifically, it aims to create synergy across the materials by using consistent visual elements like black and white color schemes, natural lighting, and locations. It also establishes intertextual references to Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray to give the music video deeper literary meaning for audiences familiar with the novel. However, promoting through digital platforms could encourage piracy that reduces CD sales, so the band may need to partner with larger companies to survive as an independent act.
3. Relationship of
Ancillary Texts
Instead of bringing in other band members into
the Music Video we used the same band
member that appeared in Music Video so that it
is not confusing to the Audience.
5. Relationship of
Ancillary Texts
Similar orange, yellow colour is again used to show that it is old
Used same typography of Song Titles from CD back cover to Magazine
Advert.
I didn’t use the same typography for the Magazine and Advert because
I felt that in the CD cover the Songs is more important whereas in the
Magazine I feel that the Band should be promoted more.
6. Dorian Gray Theme
My Music Video is an intertextual reference to the book ‘The
Picture of Dorian Gray’ by Oscar Wilde. It is a dark theme
which I wanted to portray in my Music Video.
The Portrait that is represented in the Music Video links in
with the Dorian Gray story of his true identity being locked
away in a Portrait. I tried to also show this in my CD cover
by having him black and white and the rest look like a
coloured picture falling apart. Which is meant to portray
that Dorian Gray’s identity is going to be revealed.
The Artist being shot from shoulder up is a convention that is
usually used in Portraits.
Audience who have read the book will have an understanding
of what the Music Video is about, this creates a synergy
that allows both products to be promoted and Audience will
be more interested in watching the Music Video. This also
targets a wider audience which allows the Band to profit
from.
7. Synergy
Synergy is established through the promotion of the band. This
allows the Audience to know more about them. Unlike other
Bands I have used Black and White, which I think will grab the
Audience’s attention and know that it is the Bible Code
Sundays.
In the Magazine, the text ‘The Bible Code Sundays’ is
the only thing in colour, so I think when someone
goes through the pages the colour would grab the
Reader’s eye and make them instantly look at the
Band’s name.
Even when walking down a street , while other
Artist’s posters are dominantly in colour my Poster
would make them read as there is only one text in
colour.
8. Conforming to genre
I challenged the conventions of Folk Rock Genre by not
having all the members of the band being portrayed on the
CD cover. I have done this to describe the loneliness and
alienation that Dorian Gray feels towards others.
However I have conformed in by taking a picture of the
Artist in a natural environment which most Folk Rock Bands
do.
I think Audience would find this intriguing and make them
want to buy this.
9. Insert
I used the conventions of placing the lyrics inside the
cover. The audience will use it if they want to listen to
the song and maybe want to sing along to it.
10. Platforms/Digital Technology
By placing the ancillary texts on different platforms
allows the products to attract a wider audience.
The Music Video is placed on the social network
Youtube which will promote the Band and trigger
the audience into buying the CD. However, you
need an audience first to come and watch the
Video. To do this you need a huge sum of money
to do advertising. As my Band is an independent
market it might be difficult to get my Product
promoted in a bigger market.
11. Future
If the Bible Code Sudays carried on promoting via digital
technology in the future then by placing it on sites might
promote the artist and they will become more known but it
might also encourage Piracy/llegal downloading which means
that the Audience buying the Digipak would decrease.
Therefore, this might be a burden in the financial side as the
Band is an independent market. They might not be able to
cope as they head for bigger promotions and might have to
join global conglomerates to survive.
On the other Hand the Band plays live in a lot of places which
might lead to targeting different Audience and be profit in
itself, allowing them to carry on as a Independent Company.
