Third Quarter Overview – Hydrology and Meteorology
During the third quarter (January 5 – March 11), science classes will be studying the following:
              • Earth’s fresh water and salt water resources
              • Physical features of the ocean
              • Atmosphere and how it interacts to cause weather
              • Climate

March 8 - 9: Review for interim exam
          March 10 - 11: Students take exams

Chapter 11 – Fresh water
Students should be able to:
    1. Illustrate and describe the water cycle and the processes required to move water from one place to another.
    2. Explain how the earth stores water underground.
    3. Analyze water conservation practices and methods used to protect water resources.

water cycle precipitation runoff percolation transpiration evaporation
water vapor condensation tributary watershed drainage basin groundwater
water table saturated zone unsaturated zone aquifer well spring
pores impermeable permeable water quality water pollution point-source pollution
nonpoint-source water conservation
pollution

Chapters 13 and 14 – Salt water
Students should be able to:
    1. Describe the chemical and physical properties of ocean water.
    2. Explain the cause of waves, currents, and tides.
    3. Model and describe the features on the ocean floor.
salinity wave current Coriolis effect density
tide high tide low tide sonar continental shelf
continental slope continental rise abyssal plain mid-ocean ridge rift valley
ocean trench seamount volcanic island

Chapter 15 – Atmosphere
Students should be able to:
    1. Describe the composition and structure of Earth’s atmosphere.
    2. Describe ways to protect our air quality.

atmosphere troposphere water vapor gravity altitude
air pressure barometer pollutants acid precipitation greenhouse effect
ozone layer

Chapters 16 – Weather
Students should be able to:
    1. Explain how heat energy, air pressure, winds, and moisture interact to cause weather.
    2. Explain what causes wind and how it is measured.
    3. Describe why clouds form and identify the three main types of clouds.
    4. Explain the difference between global and local winds.
    5. Identify the major types of air masses that affect weather in North America.
    6. Name and describe the main types of weather fronts.
    7. Investigate different types of weather events such as lightning, hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, and floods.
    8. Demonstrate an understanding of weather forecasting by reading and interpreting information shown on weather maps.

Third Quarter Overview – Hydrology and Meteorology During the third quarter (January 5 – March 11), science classes will be studying the following: • Earth’s fresh water and salt water resources • Physical features of the ocean • Atmosphere and how it interacts to cause weather • Climate March 8 - 9: Review for interim exam March 10 - 11: Students take exams Chapter 11 – Fresh water Students should be able to: 1. Illustrate and describe the water cycle and the processes required to move water from one place to another. 2. Explain how the earth stores water underground. 3. Analyze water conservation practices and methods used to protect water resources. water cycle precipitation runoff percolation transpiration evaporation water vapor condensation tributary watershed drainage basin groundwater water table saturated zone unsaturated zone aquifer well spring pores impermeable permeable water quality water pollution point-source pollution nonpoint-source water conservation pollution Chapters 13 and 14 – Salt water Students should be able to: 1. Describe the chemical and physical properties of ocean water. 2. Explain the cause of waves, currents, and tides. 3. Model and describe the features on the ocean floor. salinity wave current Coriolis effect density tide high tide low tide sonar continental shelf continental slope continental rise abyssal plain mid-ocean ridge rift valley ocean trench seamount volcanic island Chapter 15 – Atmosphere Students should be able to: 1. Describe the composition and structure of Earth’s atmosphere. 2. Describe ways to protect our air quality. atmosphere troposphere water vapor gravity altitude air pressure barometer pollutants acid precipitation greenhouse effect ozone layer Chapters 16 – Weather Students should be able to: 1. 8. Demonstrate an understanding of weather forecasting by reading and interpreting information shown on weather maps. weather radiation thermal conduction convection infrared radiation ultraviolet radiation temperature wind anemometer Coriolis effect global wind jet stream local wind sea breeze land breeze humidity cloud condensation cumulus cumulonimbus stratus cirrus precipitation rain gauge drought air mass continental polar maritime polar maritime tropical continental tropical front cold front warm front stationary front high pressure thunderstorm lightning tornado hurricane storm surge meteorologist weather map Chapter 17 – Climate Students should be able to: 1. Identify and explain the factors that cause climate zones. climate latitude tropical zones temperate zones polar zones global warming
