3. EXISTING MAGAZINE NAMES
TOP OF THE POPS
• THIS MAGAZINE WAS LAUNCHED DURING FEBRUARY 1995 AND IS FAMOUS FOR GIVING GROUP ‘THE SPICE GIRLS’ THEIR
NICKNAMES. THIS MAGAZINE WAS FORMERLY PROMOTED AS THE MISSING OBJECTIVE BETWEEN SMASH HITS AND NME,
BUT ITS FORMAT WAS REGULARLY CHANGED, THE CHANGES INVOLVED LESS MUSIC CONTENT AND A TARGET EMERGED
TOWARDS YOUNGER GIRLS.
• THE TITLE HAS HAD SEVERAL EDITORS OVER THE YEARS (PETER LORRAINE, CORINNA SCHAFFER AND ROSALIE SNAITH, AND
CONTRIBUTING EDITORS INCLUDING ADAM TANSWELL.) ITS PRESENT EDITOR IS PETER HART.
4. Q MAGAZINE
• ‘Q’ WAS ORIGINATED IN 1986 BY MARK ELLEN AND DAVID HEPWORTH, WHO WERE DISCOURAGED BY THE MUSIC PRESS OF THE
TIME, WHICH THEY FELT WAS ‘IGNORING A GENERATION OF OLDER MUSIC BUYERS WHO WERE BUYING CDS’. Q WAS FIRST
PUBLISHED BY THE EMAP MEDIA GROUP IN OCTOBER 1986, SETTING ITSELF APART FROM MUCH OF THE OTHER MUSIC PRESS.
• IN THE EARLY YEARS OF Q MAGAZINE, THE MAGAZINE WAS SUB-TITLED, "THE MODERN GUIDE TO MUSIC AND MORE". ORIGINALLY IT
WAS TO BE CALLED CUE BUT THE NAME WAS CHANGED SO THAT IT WOULDN'T BE MISTAKEN FOR A SNOOKER MAGAZINE. ANOTHER
REASON WAS IN Q'S 200TH EDITION, IS THAT A SINGLE-LETTER TITLE WOULD BE MORE PROMINENT ON NEWSSTANDS.
5. EXISTING MAGAZINE MASTHEADS
I have found in my research that the majority of Mastheads that I have came
across are very large and eye catching. They are portrayed this way for the
masthead is supposedly one of (if not the) most important inserts on a cover of a
magazine. They come across as bright, colourful, large in lettering, unique fonts,
and extreme baldness. Many viewers shall see the mast head first out of all of the
inserts on the cover due to the affective techniques behind the Masthead’s
presentation. If the mast head plays a huge pull factor, then it is vital that the mast
head’s of the magazines are affectively shown amongst other supplements.
