Question 2: How effective is the
combination of your main
product and ancillary texts?

Our chosen genre for our film is a police
crime genre . We included all the normal
conventions of a trailer. Our trailer is based
on a kidnap. We made sure we used both a
protagonist and a antagonist as well.
Trailers do include the usual aspects such
as a
Posters occupy a space between art and advertising.
They have a clear commercial purpose - to promote an
event or product - but they also have artistic value.
People buy them and hang them on their walls.
Museums have whole galleries devoted to poster art.
When analysing a poster it is important that you evaluate
both how well it fulfils its purpose (ie promotion) as well as
its aesthetic value. ("aesthetic value" means their value as
artistic creations.)
 The visual elements on a movie poster can
convey powerful messages.
 The best posters may make you anxiously
anticipate an upcoming release.
 The worst ones may not have a persuasive
effect at all.
 By analyzing movie posters, you can gain
a better understanding of the elements that
effectively grab the attention of movie-goers
and sell the movie's story—even before
viewers see it for themselves.
Types of Poster:
Identify which type of poster it is:
The Teaser poster -This poster contains basic information to whet your
appetite. It often does not indicate much about the plot, but may have a
picture of the stars, and the name of the film.
The Main Poster:
This contains information about the production personnel, the stars, and
the distributors.
Video/DVD Release Poster:
This one comes out when the film is released on DVD/video and often has
all of the above plus short, one line reviews from relevant publications.
Character Poster:
this one features the main character.
Remember that the posters could be a combination of two types.
A unique selling proposition (USP, also seen as unique
selling point) is a factor that differentiates a product from
its competitors, such as the lowest cost, the highest
quality or the first-ever product of its kind.
Our unique selling point in the trailer is when we ‘ dropped
the base of the sound and the trailer went into the climax.
This is because we made sure we built up the narrative
with the voiceover. We clearly showed what our trailer is
about and what to look forward to in the trailer.
Comparing my film poster, magazine and trailer together, I
feel as though they all relate and combine well together as
one.
I used the same typeface ‘Bebes Neue’ throughout my
ancillary tasks and main product as this font was very
versatile to use in all of them and looks aesthetically
pleasing to the eye as it is easy to read. It is important for
an audience to be able to view text, especially from afar, for
easy identification and navigation.
The main characters can be seen in all my 3 main products
too, and by observing all of them together I can say that my
(main) characters are all evenly spread out, with the
protagonist perhaps seen just a bit more since it is common
in the media industry for the protagonist of a film to be seen
more.
The font for the title on the poster and trailer are the same – despite the after effects added on the trailer. The magazine on the other hand
has a similar typeface but isn’t the same one. I did this so that the magazine would have it’s own theme to it, but still maintaining the genre
and visuals of our trailer.
Prior to creating my ancillary tasks, in a marketing perspective I wanted to make sure that my design would be suitable for real life use.
Hypothetically speaking, if my products were advertised in the real world, would I have chosen my poster to be in portrait form. This is so
that it can be placed in venues where there is a mass amount of people, such as a tube station or bus stop.
If I was to improve on my ancillary tasks, I would perhaps change the font for the sell lines and find one which was almost as close as to
Bebes Nueue, however I felt the one used above seemed just as effective. Maybe adding the girl somewhere in the poster would also be
good to include and would make the audience instantly know that there is a ‘damsel in distress’ in the film without even having to see the
trailer.
Overall, I believe that my products all connect with each other and that it matches with my trailer. The actors, mise en scene (costume wise)
and locations can all be seen in each of them.
Comparing my film poster, magazine and trailer together, I think
I managed to combine them well to create a well rounded piece.
I decided against using the same font when creating my piece
this was because I realised posters and movie do not share the
same fonts. However u decided to use fonts that shared similar
themes so I used ‘Capture It’ for my poster and ‘American
Captain’ both were bold clear fonts and easy for audiences to
read.
My main character is central to both my ancillary tasks and the
trailer, I wanted to have him as the main thread throughout the
three pieces and most films follow this trend of having the main
actor as the selling point for there movie.
The font I used is different from the poster and magazine yet they share themes. Whereas the one on my trailer is the same font this is to keep
consistence through the films in house promotional devices (e.g. trailer, poster) whereas the magazine cover would use its own font but share
themes of the film.
When creating the poster and magazine I found out about real techniques magazines and posters use when creating a marketing campaign, I
found out where most films advertise and this influenced me when creating my ancillary task.
A point to improve on when creating these two forms of media is the use of fonts between trailer and poster as I could have perhaps found one
that reflects the themes values more than the one I used. Even though I was able to create the sense of something being destroyed through the
font on the poster. Also I could have tried to add another character possibly an opposing force to him as many police crime thrillers did use such
techniques.
As a whole I think my product links with each other and I managed to find threads between my ancillary tasks and trailer and I managed to use
the micro aspects.
Comparing my film poster, magazine and trailer together, I feel as though they
are both different and unique in their own way.
On the left is my final draft for my front cover. I made sure i added in the finishing
touches to it as it completes the magazine. This is the final draft of my poster. In
terms of changing anything I did not really change much apart from making the
main picture image lighter and much more faint. This is because we can see his
face much more clearly. This is similar to my front cover as you can clearly see
the model and their facial expressions.
In terms of captions such as ' world exclusive', 'free poster inside' which appeals
to the audience.
Which is similar to the credits that I used which will help the audience distinguish
who is directing, producing etc.
I also added in a few designs such as an extra circle or a border which relate to
police crime genre. Also as mentioned before i used colours such as red, yellow,
black which are conventions of the genre . This is a character poster where it
features the main character so it attracts the audience.

In a nutshell both of my ancillary tasks help to merge ideas and to use the same conventions but in a slightly different aspect in terms of the poster and a front
cover. I was able to find both the micro and macro aspects of them.

The Main Poster: This contains information about the production personnel, the stars, and the distributors. Video/DVD Release Poster: This one comes out when the film is released on DVD/video and often has all of the above plus short, one line reviews from relevant publications. Character Poster: this one features the main character. Remember that the posters could be a combination of two types.

A unique selling proposition (USP, also seen as unique selling point) is a factor that differentiates a product from its competitors, such as the lowest cost, the highest quality or the first-ever product of its kind. Our unique selling point in the trailer is when we ‘ dropped the base of the sound and the trailer went into the climax. This is because we made sure we built up the narrative with the voiceover. We clearly showed what our trailer is about and what to look forward to in the trailer.
  • 6. Comparing my film poster, magazine and trailer together, I feel as though they all relate and combine well together as one. I used the same typeface ‘Bebes Neue’ throughout my ancillary tasks and main product as this font was very versatile to use in all of them and looks aesthetically pleasing to the eye as it is easy to read. It is important for an audience to be able to view text, especially from afar, for easy identification and navigation. The main characters can be seen in all my 3 main products too, and by observing all of them together I can say that my (main) characters are all evenly spread out, with the protagonist perhaps seen just a bit more since it is common in the media industry for the protagonist of a film to be seen more. The font for the title on the poster and trailer are the same – despite the after effects added on the trailer. The magazine on the other hand has a similar typeface but isn’t the same one. I did this so that the magazine would have it’s own theme to it, but still maintaining the genre and visuals of our trailer. Prior to creating my ancillary tasks, in a marketing perspective I wanted to make sure that my design would be suitable for real life use. Hypothetically speaking, if my products were advertised in the real world, would I have chosen my poster to be in portrait form. This is so that it can be placed in venues where there is a mass amount of people, such as a tube station or bus stop. If I was to improve on my ancillary tasks, I would perhaps change the font for the sell lines and find one which was almost as close as to Bebes Nueue, however I felt the one used above seemed just as effective. Maybe adding the girl somewhere in the poster would also be good to include and would make the audience instantly know that there is a ‘damsel in distress’ in the film without even having to see the trailer. Overall, I believe that my products all connect with each other and that it matches with my trailer. The actors, mise en scene (costume wise) and locations can all be seen in each of them.
  • 7. Comparing my film poster, magazine and trailer together, I think I managed to combine them well to create a well rounded piece. I decided against using the same font when creating my piece this was because I realised posters and movie do not share the same fonts. However u decided to use fonts that shared similar themes so I used ‘Capture It’ for my poster and ‘American Captain’ both were bold clear fonts and easy for audiences to read. My main character is central to both my ancillary tasks and the trailer, I wanted to have him as the main thread throughout the three pieces and most films follow this trend of having the main actor as the selling point for there movie. The font I used is different from the poster and magazine yet they share themes. Whereas the one on my trailer is the same font this is to keep consistence through the films in house promotional devices (e.g. trailer, poster) whereas the magazine cover would use its own font but share themes of the film. When creating the poster and magazine I found out about real techniques magazines and posters use when creating a marketing campaign, I found out where most films advertise and this influenced me when creating my ancillary task. A point to improve on when creating these two forms of media is the use of fonts between trailer and poster as I could have perhaps found one that reflects the themes values more than the one I used. Even though I was able to create the sense of something being destroyed through the font on the poster. Also I could have tried to add another character possibly an opposing force to him as many police crime thrillers did use such techniques. As a whole I think my product links with each other and I managed to find threads between my ancillary tasks and trailer and I managed to use the micro aspects.
  • 8. Comparing my film poster, magazine and trailer together, I feel as though they are both different and unique in their own way. On the left is my final draft for my front cover. I made sure i added in the finishing touches to it as it completes the magazine. This is the final draft of my poster. In terms of changing anything I did not really change much apart from making the main picture image lighter and much more faint. This is because we can see his face much more clearly. This is similar to my front cover as you can clearly see the model and their facial expressions. In terms of captions such as ' world exclusive', 'free poster inside' which appeals to the audience. Which is similar to the credits that I used which will help the audience distinguish who is directing, producing etc. I also added in a few designs such as an extra circle or a border which relate to police crime genre. Also as mentioned before i used colours such as red, yellow, black which are conventions of the genre . I could of made sure my font was the same throughout and the same theme In a nutshell both of my ancillary tasks help to merge ideas and to use the same conventions but in a slightly different aspect in terms of the poster and a front cover. I was able to find both the micro and macro aspects of them.
