WHAT IS A HABITAT? WHAT IS A COMMUNITY?
Habitat: the place where an animal or plant normally lives. Tigers live in the forest. Polar bears live
in very cold regions. Fish live in water.
Community: the group of plants and animals living in a habitat. In the savannah, zebras and lions
live in the same place. In the forest, tigers and deers live in the same place.

DEMONSTRATE A SIMPLE UNDERSTANDING OF BIODIVERSITY.
• PLEASE REFER TO THE VIDEOS IN SLIDE 5 AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS.
1. What is a habitat?
2. You are in the desert. What plants and animals you would find there?
3. Case study: Lions live in the savannah in Africa
a) Do you have lions in Mauritius?
b) How do these animals live here?
c) Is it their natural habitat?
4. What is a community of animals?
5. GIve an example of a community of animals in your country?
6. Name the endemic plants and animals in your country.

Danger of Soil erosion
How Human Activities Pollution, are dangerous for our biodiversity.

HEAT
EFFECTS
4/17/2020B. SURNAM 14
Smoke from factories &
vehicles
1.Lungs of animals get affected
2. Global warming/depletion of
ozone layer
3. Acid rain that damage plants
1.Chemicals from factories and
agriculture
2. Human wastes
3. Spilled oil from ships
1.Noise from human activities. 2.Noise from
factories and vehicles
Land gets poisoned.
Plants and animals get
poisoned and may die.
Hurt ear drums
Burning of fuels and human
activities
Global warming
Invasive Alien Species are dangerous for our
biodiversity.
• Invasive alien species= Exotic plants and
animals that have been introduced in a
place. These alien invasive plants take all the
place and kill off local plants.
• The alien invasive animals compete with
local animals and eat their food or eat them.

Effects Of Global Warming that are dangerous for our
biodiversity.Temperature of the atmosphere goes up.
What happens?
1. The ice caps melt and the homes of polar animals get
smaller.
a) Polar animals have less food to eat.
b) The numbers of polar animals decrease.
c) They might be extinct.
2. Sea level goes up. The coastline disappears and the
biodiversity also disappears.
