The City Of Dubai And Its Current Status Of A World Class...
'Gloom Behind The Glitter'– Dubai Masters The Art of Being Global
A comparison of the official and vernacular narrative in the Media Representing 'Dubai'
Erum Khan
Introduction
The city of Dubai is situated in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula. Part of the United Arab Emirates
UAE, this city–state is aspiring to be major metropolis and the most populated in UAE with a
population of 2.1 million approx. Dubai is also one of the richest economies of the world with 'an
estimated per capita income of $37000/–'10
This paper will work through the lens of two dominant perspectives investigating Dubai's rise to its
current status of a world–class city. Examining first from the 'political economy' approach, and
secondly using the postcolonial focus to analyze the state constructed media products such as
official website, print & TV campaigns promoting Dubai as the 'land of good times'.
The political economy approach imagines the metropolis as a 'site of capital accumulation'1 and a
field for reshaping social relations among citizens. The post–colonial approach views any city
having a colonial history and as a setting for subaltern resistance to the colonial hegemony. Being
under the British colonial rule that lasted till 1971, Dubai is suffering from a hierarchy defined by
social income class as well as residential status and the class struggle between Emiratis and non–
national migrant workers for equal pay, status and fairer regulations.

the most visible features at the expo will be a larger blanket–like structure consisting of

than half of the energy need for the expo (Rosenfield, 2013, p. 6).
The fact that Dubai was a last minute entry into the expo 2020 bid is an indication of its strength in
hosting the prestigious event. Cities such as Turkey, Ayutthaya, and São Paulo had an early entry but
Dubai was favored largely due to its Middle Eastern connection.

Under Pressure, Dubai Drops Port Deal The Dubai Port World controversy began in February 2006
and rose to prominence as a national security debate in the United States. At issue was the sale of
port management businesses in six major U.S. seaports to a company based in the United Arab
Emirates, and whether such a sale would compromise port security. The controversy pertained to
management contracts of six major United States ports. The purchaser was DP World, a state–owned
company in the U.A.E. The contracts had already been foreign–owned, by Peninsular and Oriental
Steam Navigation Company (P&O), a British firm taken over by DPW, completed in March 2006.

First, these ports are strategic for the country, and it is better to be managed by the US Company.
Second, more US citizens will be employed. Finally, the most important factor is security. The
country will be safer when these ports are managed by Americans. The safety of the country and
support of domestic companies could have influence on the reversal of the ports deal. The US public
concerns did not have big influence on a business decision made by a Dubai company. More
influence had the political pressure. However, public concern also played its role in this case. For
example, people's opinion was that foreign states, especially those related to terrorism in the past,
could not be trusted with strategic American assets. Also, they thought that foreign countries should
not have managerial responsibilities over ports due to divided loyalties and concerns over national
independence. Accordingly, all these public opinions were reflected and expressed by the politicians
whose pressure constrained Dubai Company to withdraw. Thinking that transportation takes place
through a global network of companies is slightly incorrect. Ports are vulnerable to the entry of
terrorists or illicit weapons because of the large number of containers that enter U.S. territory.
Accordingly, no foreign government should be permitted to own such strategic assets. There are
many business assets that can be owned by foreign companies and

Capitalism In Dubai Essay
Capitalism the new economic system which are cities moving to. Is it safe? Do the governments
know the disadvantages of the capitalism? Does the capitalism improve the city on the long–term or
it is just a short–term of illusionist growth? The capitalism has made huge noises that it is a good
role to follow especially with what Dubai had achieved in short time but, how about Dubai real
heritage. Dubai capitalism model is a huge mistake because it leads to inequality, support destroying
the legacy and cause unstable Economy. First of all, the biggest issue of the capitalism is the
inequality and that is why other cities should never copy Dubai. According to Roche,C.(2015),

Nowadays, when anyone visits Dubai it is like visiting an international country with many
nationalities but without natives. Because Dubai where built by others which have been taking all
over the country now. Indeed, the percentage of natives in Dubai now is less than one percent which
is horribly so bad. Although, the late moving of the government to restore the heritage of Dubai the
culture and traditions of Dubai has been vanished already and reached Point of no return. And this
has too many negative things on the next generation. Also regarding the disappearing of the
traditions and the original culture Dubai heritage has been abandoned and natives now are forced to
adapt with the residents culture because the residents are the majority now. Also, all the natives are
moving out from their own town because Dubai has become a center for prostitution even though,
the prostitution are against the low in Dubai but, the whole government have to subject to the
current situation because Dubai now is no longer owned by United Arab of Emiratis, it is owned by
rich people and they taking control over it. According to Heydarian, R. J. (2014), the capitalism in
some Arab countries caused the 'Arab Spring' which was a huge disaster to the governments and that
because the Arabs start awake and see that the capitalism is affecting them negatively. Well, that

Dubai Urbanization
"Things happen at such a speed, in such a fragmented way, and with so little governmental oversight
that to find one person with a complete grasp of what's going on is a very, very difficult task," said
Reinier de Graaf to Steven Zachs of Metropolis Magazine about the city of Dubai. Dubai is a city
with very little history as a town and even less history as a major city; however it has ignited much
research, controversy and many to stare in awe from its rapid urbanization. The research will delve
into the reasons behind this growth and how it has been used to commodify the rich culture of those
whom lived in the place that Dubai currently occupies (Otherwise known as the Bedouins). There
has been much controversy surrounding the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the report by Kanna it is argued that while the city has been reprimanded of its exploitation and
abuse of workers, it turns a blind eye and simply dismisses it as "work place accidents". Another
problem is the prostitution that is taking place in Dubai, while the country is aware of the problem it
is not stopping it, with many of the Arabs in neighboring countries simply coming for "foreign
prostitutes" (Molavi). The spectacle within this is in relation to Dubai's image; where it tries to sell
to foreigners and tourists this image of culture and at the same time safety, it is due to the invisibility
of the work force that is providing Dubai with its towering skyscrapers and modernized landscapes.
After the incidents of September 11, Dubai has seen a rapid modernization (Zachs). Metropolis
Magazine describes it as the economic and cultural center of the future (in comparison to New York
City being that of the present). Within the article, Zachs describes the towering skyscrapers and the
soon–to–be tallest structure in the world; he however argues that with its rapid urbanization and
sudden growth, Dubai is currently the global center of the Arab world, providing many with jobs
and financial support to their families. Also, with this rapid modernization and the constant flow of
tourists, workers and the diversity of its citizens, Dubai has had to satisfy many needs; to the point

one of the most advanced cities in the world. Dubai is setting the example for many cities around the
globe. Known greatly for its luxury and "fanciness", Dubai is becoming popular for tourism and
shopping, and they are pulling as many people in as they can. The reason why Dubai is now
focusing on tourism instead of oil is because the supply of oil is depleting, and soon enough the oil
will be gone and Dubai will be left with nothing to support its economy. Dubai is setting the
example for the world in architecture and technology, and is an innovative example of outstanding
infrastructure. The first thing that Dubai did to bring fame to itself was build the tallest building in
the world. The Burj Khalifa is known for its magnificent height and for its very unique design. The
Burj was built by the world renowned company SOM, (Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill LLP). SOM

Dubai could be sustainable by them to stop using so much oil because their cheap supply of oil is

hotels, this will make natural resources a lot more sustainable. This can affect the local residents
because they are not use to sun and wind power. The UAE came the least environmentally friendly

Dubai is not large in size or scale, but two major things keep Dubai ahead economically than most
other places on this planet. Founded in 1833 Dubai was influenced by many, some of which
included the Dutch, the British, the Venetians, and the Portuguese. Strong economically sound
nations like this may lead you to believe this is why Dubai became so economically wealthy.
Although this did play a small role in the success of Dubai, it was not a major reason for their
economic success. In fact most of them were just interested in the region, and that's why they
became so friendly and helpful to Dubai's people because they wanted to eventually overtake them

Business Etiquette in United Arab Emirates, Dubai
Dubai is one of the world 's fastest growing economies. It is the most populous city in the United
Arab Emirates (UAE), and it is one of the seven emirates that make up the country. It is a busy city
with lots of businesses and opportunities. Like every city and country around the world, Dubai has
its own culture and etiquette policy in business regarding clothing, greetings, conversation, dining,

The way people dress is extremely important in business. People tend to make their first impression
on the way that someone's dressed. According to the article, "Business Etiquette Around the World:
United Arab Emirates" in Dubai, The modesty of your clothing is extremely important for men and
women. Be careful to not wear revealing clothes and to cover your shoulders, arms, and legs

Dubai: The Land of Miracles.
There are many incredible cities around the world. Some of which are famous for its history, while
other cities are famous for its malls and entertainment attractions. However, the city of Dubai is one
of the United Arab of Emirates cities, and it is known for many different aspects. Dubai is the
biggest economic city in the golf region for the past decade and it is indeed a city of contrast. In
other words, the city combines the old fashion with new fashion in a unique way that makes it
attractively special. The old and the new are being juxtaposed at almost every street corner.
Furthermore, Arabic tradition contrasted with the surge of (mainly Western) tourism, Arabic markets
competing for space with pristine shopping malls. Therefore, this paper will concentrates on the
events that made Dubai a global city as well as a business and financial center. It is also going to
discuses why and how it became a tourist destination for many people around the world.
Geographic and Economic Information:
The city of Dubai is known as one of the wealthiest cities among other Middle Eastern cities
although it is the smallest in term of area; however, Dubai has several unique things that feature the
city to be better than other cities. Dubai has a magnificent location, the ability to expand to twice its

Tourism And Tourism In Dubai
Dubai has been considered, globally, as one of the fastest developing regions of the twenty–first–
century. Goves and Go described Dubai in their report (2009:73) as "riding the waves of
globalization, having firmly established itself in less than fifteen years, as an important node in the
network of global flows". Dubai's strategic expansion has been factored towards its large influence
within the tourism and leisure industries– instead of the competitive oil markets in which its
neighbouring countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar are known for. Leisure, as defined by Page and
Connell (2010:10) describesw leisure not as a singular discipline, but as multiple factors which
incorporate elements of geography, sociology, economics, politics, history and psychology, thus it
can be difficult to fully define the term 'leisure' however often it has been associated with times of
relaxation or non–work time for many travellers. To fully evaluate Dubai's position as a suitable
leisure industry this essay will explore the framework proposed by Dimitrios Buhalis in his paper
'The Competitive Destination'. Firstly, I will outline the activities and attractions available within
Dubai, highlighting its reputation for achieving the biggest and best of architecture and
entertainment. Next, I will explore how effective Dubai is as a functional residential region by
drawing attention to its ancillary services such as the police, internet and banking alongside its

Essay on Keep my Camera Rolling in Dubai
Riding on the roads of Dubai is essentially a fieldtrip in itself. There is so much to see form the
drop–dead architecture to the metro; from the vigorously kept grass to the natural desert, and of
course the tantalizing advertisements. Whether it's a new product or a new city you'll see it... on
cardboard. Oh, did I mention the expensive line–up of luxury cars that roam around too? The
highway is surrounded by high rises and each one has its own unique architecture. Being a rather
futuristic/touristy city all the buildings seem to have adapted a code. Rule number one would
probably be: One must create a unique and eye–catching exterior. Rule number two: One must
decorate said exterior with astounding array of lights when sun sets. Rule ... Show more content on

You can sometimes see the metro running alongside the highway on the elevated bridge. But, of
course, not the whole highway is surrounded by buildings. There are also many construction sites
which give a window into what Dubai used to be like: a lot of dust and sand. There are some parts
however, in which one might spot a bit of greenery. It's both artificial and real at the same time.
Artificial in the sense that it's not natural to the land and that it must be watered ten times a day to
maintain, and real in the sense that it's not a piece of plastic. Which is commendable because of the
arid climate here. As I'm sure we all know, no road is complete without advertisements and Dubai is
no different. For example it's hard to miss the huge brick wall that runs a few miles long advertising
Dubai Sports City that is currently being built. Or the huge structure that's concealing the
construction site of Dubai Lagoon and at the same time is ostentatiously showing off what it's
supposed to look like. Then of course there are the regular advertisements of phones and such
glowing at nighttime and commanding your attention. But no analysis of the roads of Dubai is
complete without the cars that roam on the road. Mostly you'll see the average Toyota or Nissan. But
also accompanying them are Benzes, Lexi, and other luxury/exotic cars. The unusual thing is the
quantity of these types of cars which number unusually high. I suppose it fits with the image of ease,

Explain How Is Dubai A Capitalist Model
Is Dubai a capitalist model in the Middle East? Even that Dubai has its own challenges to deal with,
but it dazzled the world's attention in the last few years from its remarkable success story. Dubai is a
city that considered as one of the fastest growing country in the world. It has gone from strength to
strength. In every year Dubai is developing by working hard on its self and its goals. Dubai is a
capitalist model because of its hard work at building its road infrastructure, having more
entertainment places, and making a comfortable environment for the people from different cultures.
One of the main reasons that makes Dubai a capitalist model is that the way they have built and
organized their roads. Dubai's streets have a reputation for their width and infrastructure. The Dubai
roads instructor helped the people to move around easily. Davidson, (2008) Said that the annual
budget of Dubai Municipality's exceeds Dh1.28 billion (US$350 million), with almost 90 % billed
to infrastructure development. In other words, Dubai Municipality's budget spends approximately
billions on the infrastructure every year. To illustrate, Dubai has built and constructed amazing roads
that would get you to your destination comfortably and most importantly, that it could take you to
your destination in many different directions. In conclusion, the roads infrastructure was ... Show

to begin with, Saunders says, " I can't locate the pedestrian entrance...Anybody who belongs in there

good look. A low class person could not afford a room for $12,000 a night so it is expected for only
high class individuals to arrive. This stays in his conscience because of the social division of people
in Dubai. Next, Saunders notes, "Somewhere in India is a guy who'd kill to do some stair–washing
in Dubai." (591) This quotation shows that people in other countries would appreciate a job even if
its a job no one would like to do. Saunders feels bad for people that have hard jobs but he knows
people in Dubai are making more money there than in their own country. This dwells on his
conscience because he knows this man is fortunate to be working although it is not the best job.
Finally, Saunders adds, " I can go home and write about it, making more for writing about it than
he'll make in many, many years of doing it." (591) This quotation indicates Saunders understands
the division of income between the man and him. He knows this man will have hard labor all his life

The Magic Of The Surreal Dubai
The magic of the surreal Dubai
Dubai – is a giant Disneyland, where everything is based on the law of supply and demand, and life
is artificial; the main destination on Tourists' map and one of the main cities of the United Arab
Emirates, most of the time, wrongly assumed as a capital of the country. Dubai attracts with
inadequate amount of entertainments, and ability to earn and live a better life. In the past four
decades the United Arab Emirates developed with the speed that takes other countries centuries.
Although proud Arab people trying not to think about past, when the "British assumed all

Until now, this approach has justified itself: in just 43 years of existence of the United Arab

Abstract – The water quality near to a coral reef site in
Jebel Ali, Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) was studied.
Many Physico–Chemical parameters for water samples taken at two different depths (0.5 m and 1.0
m) parallel to a coral reef site were measured and analyzed. The data showed that the pH is equal to
6.4, 6.1 respectively which indicates an acidic environment. The average of total dissolved solids
(TDS) is approximately equal to 43,600 mg/L and 43,200 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The Strengths Of Culture In Dubai
ASSIGNMENT:
Question 1: What is your greatest strength culturally speaking? Explain.
I think the strength of Dubai's culture is the fact that even though it is home to a number of
immigrants and has the reputation of being one of the most attractive tourist spots; it has preserved
its culture. The Emirates operate according to the Muslim culture and centres on the family. Even
though it is known as the entertainment capital of Middle East, the local nationals keep themselves
from over indulging in the offered entertainment practices which has helped in preserving the
culture in spite of the large number of non immigrant population. Dubai has become a cosmopolitan
city with a maintained rich culture, tradition and customs. It is a stable and yet progressive society
and culture. Even tough Islam is the major religion of Dubai there is tolerance and respect for other
religions of the migrants which is another strength of the diverse population of Dubai. This culture
of absorbing the different cultures and understanding the differences is the true strength of culture
here in Dubai.
Question 2: What is your greatest weakness culturally speaking? Explain

The only direction where Dubai is lagging is the non–encouragement of women to work. Some laws
still discriminate against the Emirati Women. Although this situation is improving, the rate of
improvement is slow. The percentage of women is should increase in government departments and

The Success Of Dubai 's Brand Essay
A small desert village that resides next to the Arabian Gulf, Dubai has established its footprint in the
global world competing with renowned cities such as London, New York, Frankfort, and Hong
Kong. In a span of 10 years, Dubai had built the tallest building in the world, the first luxurious
seven–star hotel in the world, and the largest man–made island and is building more amazing
projects. Furthermore, Emirates Airlines became one of the top brands in the world with its
outstanding quality of services and its vast and new fleet of planes flying over 40 million passengers
to every possible destination in the world. The success of Dubai's brand can be attributed to its
astonishing leader Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al–Maktoum. Through his vision and his
leadership style, Dubai emerged from a depleting oil reserves state, withstood the economic
recessions in 2001 and 2008 and excelled globally by completing their massive projects and
challenging many more complex projects such as the Mall of the World. Which is going to be the
biggest mall in the globe, and Expo 2020 as the first city in the MENA region to host this event.
Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum is the Vice President and Prime Minister of United Arab
Emirates (UAE) and the Constitutional Monarch of Dubai. He was born in 1949 in Dubai where he

Economic Growth of Dubai Now known as a tourist destination like no other, Dubai was once a
small fishing and pearling community of close to 1,200 people. Appearing regularly in Western pop
culture, such as, movies, music, television shows, and advertising, the city of Dubai has come a long
way from its humble origins. The purpose of this paper is to look at what contributing economic and
cultural factors, throughout history, that have contributed to the explosive growth of Dubai, with the
early establishment of trade being a key feature. To fully understand the scale of development that
has taken place, it is required to understand some of the history that has led to its current status as a
leader in the Arabian Gulf regional economy and a luxury travel destination. Though the area that
would later become Dubai had been settled since approximately 2000 BCE, the first recording in
modern history dates to 1822. Initially known as Debai, the area was home to the Bani Yas tribe.
Originally a dependency of Abu Dhabi, the village sustained itself by fishing, pearl diving, and
minor sea trade. On June 9, 1833, led by Maktoum Bin Butti Al Maktoum, 800 members of the Al
Bu Falasah clan peacefully took over the village and established the al–Maktoum dynasty, which
still rules Dubai, and the UAE, to this day. In the twenty year period after the official founding of
Dubai, the area was plagued with piracy. This led the British to

I've been raised in Dubai my whole life, since my family moved in 1998 due to my father's job,
making that almost 18 years of my life. Considering I have lived in Dubai almost my whole life,
even though I'm Indonesian, I think of Dubai as my Hometown. Throughout this presentation, I will
be talking about Dubai's facts, historical background which will allow some insight into the city's
culture and growth into it's state of metropolitan, along with the climate throughout the year, the
population and hotspots tourists love to visit during their stay in Dubai.
Dubai is one of the seven Emirates in the United Arab Emirates, which is located in the Persian
Gulf. Dubai is a city founded by Ubaid bin Saeed and Maktoum bin Butti Al Maktoum. It's national
independence day is the second of December. It's know as the biggest metropolitan in the Middle
East, and known as one of the biggest business hubs in the Middle East, a station for transporting
passengers and cargos. Its official language is Arabic, and many of the school in the country has
compulsory Arabic classes for the students as the government makes it to be. However, as the city
has a lot of expatriates and tourists coming to the city, Dubai is very accepting of the English
language being spoken as well as a variety of other languages such as Tamil, Tagalog and many
other languages are also freely spoken in the city.

Dubai is one of the seven emirates that joined in 1971 to make the United Arab Emirate (UAE).
Dubai is located on the southeast coast of the Persian Gulf and is a business and cultural hub of the
Middle East. Dubai's main revenue comes from tourism, aviation, real estate and financial services.
More than 90% of Dubai's total GDP accounts to non–oil sector and tourism add 30% to this non–oil
sector (Godubai, 2008). Dubai has attracted worldwide attention because of its various innovative
large construction projects, sky scrapers, Burj Khalifa (world's tallest building), man–made islands,
sports & other cultural events. With its strategic geographical location and the great vision of its
ruler, Dubai has gone a long way to become one of the fastest growing cities in the world and a

United Arab Emirates: Dubai, One of the Seven Emirates Essay
Dubai is one of the seven emirates, which are located in the United Arab Emirates. It is situated
along the coast of the Persian Gulf. Dubai experiences dry arid climate. In the summer the
temperatures can reach up to 48°C with humidity ranging from 80%–90% and sandstorms may be
experienced. Yet the winter months, beginning in November and ending in March are cooler. At this
time the temperatures are usually around 20°C. To determine how the water scarcity impacts the

Water Scarcity
In Dubai there is a lack of clean water. (Hussein 2011) Therefore many of the people in Dubai will
not drink this water in fear that they will become ill. This is not good as people refuse to buy the
water resulting in a decrease in the economy. Therefore there is a significant amount of waste
(Hussein 2011) as people do not want to consume the water and are too scared to use the water when
cooking or bathing. The harsh climate also adds to the need for fresh water to ensure that people do
not suffer from dehydration and malnutrition. The people are not changing the way in which they
farm, as they do not know how to farm and what to farm when there is a lack of water. This results
in a lower yield, as farmers are not producing sufficient amounts of food.
If the UAE continues at the rate they are going with regards to water, they will enter into a stage
where they will have 'water poverty (Hussein 2011).' This would result in disease and dehydration as
well as, the city will not be able to maintain the central district. This will result in a decrease in
tourism in the country. Tourism is Dubai's main source of income as their oil supply is running low.
The source mentioned above is biased. The sources only mention the water scarcity problem. The
efforts to correct the problem are not highlighted. The source is reliable as it is a research project

Synopsis Of Dubai International Airport
Dubai International Airport
Dubai International Airport was conceptualized to function as Dubai 's primary airport and the
regions busiest for the foreseeable future without the need for relocation or the building of another
airport when passenger figures increased. The area was chosen near to Dubai, to attract passengers
from the city of Dubai rather than travel to the busier Sharjah International Airport. The planned
location originally was Jebel Ali. The original masterplan for the existing airport initially involved a
dual terminal and one runway configuration over two phases with provisions for another two
passenger terminals in the near future. Phase 1 included the construction for the first passenger
terminal, the first runway, 70 aircraft parking bays, support facilities and structures, including a
large maintenance hangar, the first fire station, workshops and administrative offices, an airfreight
complex, two cargo agents buildings, in–flight catering kitchen and a 285ft control tower.
Construction for the second phase would commence immediately after the completion of Phase 1
and include the second runway, 50 new aircraft parking bays in addition to the existing 70 bays, a
second fire station and a third cargo agent building.
The third phase included construction of a new terminal (now the parts of Terminal 1 's main
building and Concourse C) and an additional 60 parking bays, as well as new aircraft maintenance
facility. Then, in the early 2000s a new master

Dubai Aviation And International Airport
Introduction
Since the building of Dubai's first airport in 1959, Dubai's aviation industry has grown into one of
the world's largest logistical hubs. With the addition of a $32 billion facility, The Al Maktoum
International Airport, Dubai's aviation industry has had local, regional, and global impact,
positioning Dubai as a world hub in the Middle East for tourism, trade, and commerce (Greenway,
2013, p 33). This essay will explore the aviation model in Dubai from the creation of its first airport
in 1959, to the planned opening of The Al Maktoum International Airport to passenger travel in
2015.
Topics of this paper will include how Dubai's aviation model has impacted the economies of both
regional and international communities, and how the current infrastructure of Dubai's logistics
industry will affect the growth within the Dubai aviation model. Citing recent studies, this paper will
explore how the Dubai aviation sector has contributed to its own region's growth while threatening
the status of past international aviation hubs such as Britain's Heathrow airport. The ambition of
Dubai's ruling government will be discussed as a major factor in the growth of Dubai's aviation
model. Specifically, how Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Maktoum's ambition and vision has helped
"establish the emirate as an award–winning logistics hub" (Greenway, 2013, p 33). In spite of recent
crisis in global economies, Dubai's aviation sector has largely been responsible for restoring

Phases of Development
Dubai has undergone four major development phases since its beginning. The very first stage

Some problems the city is now facing include land ownership/distribution, adequate housing,
modern public transportation systems and the polarization of the low–income class and the wealthy.
Land and housing challenges. One of the main problems encountered with fast–paced urbanization
is land ownership and the process of updating dilapidated housing facilities. According to state
policy, all national males over the age of 20 must receive a plot of land that is at least 15000 square
feet. Dubai is a predominantly automobile driven state. A major challenge the city faces is creating a
modern transportation system in the rapidly expanding urban area. As most people travel by
automobile, fewer than 5% of person trips are by public transport. The automobile dependent city
encounters high volume traffic during peak hours and hardly adequate parking facilities. Another
hardship faced is economic classification of classes. Although Dubai is rich from oil, much of that
money is controlled by the wealthy and powerful upper class especially the Sheik. In principle
everyone is welcome in the awe–inspiring edifices sprawling across the city, nonetheless this theory
is confounded by reality: only those that are either customers or nationals of the Emirate can meet
the expense of much of these structures, with innumerable low–income migrants essentially
excluded by a subtle system of priority entries, fees and membership cards (Acuto,

Analysis Of Dubai : Rags To Riches
Dubai: Rags to Riches
What was once a small poverty–ridden settlement has now turned into a fully globalized city and
business hub of the Middle East, Dubai is the largest and most populated city in the United Arab
Emirates (UAE). It has now developed into an economic powerhouse within the past few decades.
Dubai's oil revenue helped escalate the early development of the city, but as of now much of its
funds come from real estate, tourism, and construction. Also, Dubai has now emerged as an
ethnically diverse metropolis residing of many cultures. According to the GaWC list, Dubai has
earned an alpha+ ranking, which is fitting due to its economic prosperity, demographic and cultural
traits, political significance and influence, and projected future.
One of the main characteristics that determine the level of globalization a city has reached is the
city's economic affluence. Dubai has transformed dramatically within the last few decades and has
one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Towns that were once "mud–walled"
communities have molded into "commercial capitals integrated into the global economy"(Staff
2016). Due to finding oil reserves, the UAE gained a thriving economy, making it one of the
wealthiest countries in the world. With their economy on the rise, Dubai's stature as a city in the
world went up, making its dominance present. During the 1990s, many foreign trading communities

Sustainable Development
Throughout the extent of time in which humans have inhabited the Earth, it has only been in the past
couple hundred years that humanity has developed technology at an astonishing rate. From the early
1800s and onward, the human population has skyrocketed and advancements in technology have
rapidly progressed through the course of a relatively short period of time. In that time, society has
become a massive, interconnected network of people that are dependent on resources that originate
from different parts of the world. With the technology of today, society has enabled resources that
range from food to oil, to be transported to areas of the world in which those select resources are not
available. An extreme example of this would be the city of Dubai, which is part of one of the seven
emirates that constitute the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is one of the most impressive and
wealthiest cities in the world and is well known for the luxurious lifestyle, extremely modernized
architecture, and can be viewed as the epitome of a Westernized society. However, the land of the
United Arab Emirates is sandy and barren, and not capable of being used for agricultural purposes,
there is no major fresh water supply, and very few natural resources. With the absence of farmland
and water, Dubai is a city that depends on the resources found worldwide that are purchased with
the revenue from oil exports. Dubai has capitalized on its predominant resources and found

The Importance Of Tourism In Dubai
Dubai is a modern city, it did not become modernised until the great oil discovery in 1966– which
led Dubai to be the popular tourist destination it is today. Before it was mainly sand but now it is a
contemporary city which attracts millions of people every year. The population of Dubai has
increased dramatically– in 1975 the population was 183,200, now (2017) it is around 1.67 million.
(Ref 1) Although modern Dubai foundations are from the money from the oil industry, that soon will
change as the last deposit of oil will be in 2029.
Dubai is the largest city with the most population in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). There are
many attractions in Dubai for tourists to visit; one of them being the Burj Khalifa– the tallest
building in the world. Not only is it the tallest building in the world but also "the tallest free–
standing structure in the world, highest number of stories in the world, highest occupied floor in the
world, highest outdoor observation deck in the world, elevator with the longest travel distance in the
world and the tallest service elevator in the world." (Ref 2) When travelling to Dubai it is almost an
essential to visit the Burj Khalifa as it is one of the main attractions in Dubai. Although this is a
popular attraction sometimes it is not all that great as sometimes when at the top of the Burj Khalifa
you cannot see the views due to the weather. Unlike most countries Dubai has sandstorms which

The City Of Dubai And Its Current Status Of A World Class...

  • 1. The City Of Dubai And Its Current Status Of A World Class... 'Gloom Behind The Glitter'– Dubai Masters The Art of Being Global A comparison of the official and vernacular narrative in the Media Representing 'Dubai' Erum Khan Introduction The city of Dubai is situated in the heart of the Arabian Peninsula. Part of the United Arab Emirates UAE, this city–state is aspiring to be major metropolis and the most populated in UAE with a population of 2.1 million approx. Dubai is also one of the richest economies of the world with 'an estimated per capita income of $37000/–'10 This paper will work through the lens of two dominant perspectives investigating Dubai's rise to its current status of a world–class city. Examining first from the 'political economy' approach, and secondly using the postcolonial focus to analyze the state constructed media products such as official website, print & TV campaigns promoting Dubai as the 'land of good times'. The political economy approach imagines the metropolis as a 'site of capital accumulation'1 and a field for reshaping social relations among citizens. The post–colonial approach views any city having a colonial history and as a setting for subaltern resistance to the colonial hegemony. Being under the British colonial rule that lasted till 1971, Dubai is suffering from a hierarchy defined by social income class as well as residential status and the class struggle between Emiratis and non– national migrant workers for equal pay, status and fairer regulations. Celebrating technological innovations will be one of the main attractions at the expo 2020.Some of the most visible features at the expo will be a larger blanket–like structure consisting of photovoltaic, which will not only act as a shade for the numerous visitors but will also provide more than half of the energy need for the expo (Rosenfield, 2013, p. 6). The fact that Dubai was a last minute entry into the expo 2020 bid is an indication of its strength in hosting the prestigious event. Cities such as Turkey, Ayutthaya, and São Paulo had an early entry but Dubai was favored largely due to its Middle Eastern connection. Under Pressure, Dubai Drops Port Deal Essay Giorgi Murusidze Dr. Paul Wilson MBA 580.60 November 2, 2010 Under Pressure, Dubai Drops Port Deal The Dubai Port World controversy began in February 2006 and rose to prominence as a national security debate in the United States. At issue was the sale of port management businesses in six major U.S. seaports to a company based in the United Arab Emirates, and whether such a sale would compromise port security. The controversy pertained to management contracts of six major United States ports. The purchaser was DP World, a state–owned company in the U.A.E. The contracts had already been foreign–owned, by Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O), a British firm taken over by DPW, completed in March 2006. Although ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, these ports are strategic for the country, and it is better to be managed by the US Company. Second, more US citizens will be employed. Finally, the most important factor is security. The country will be safer when these ports are managed by Americans. The safety of the country and support of domestic companies could have influence on the reversal of the ports deal. The US public concerns did not have big influence on a business decision made by a Dubai company. More influence had the political pressure. However, public concern also played its role in this case. For example, people's opinion was that foreign states, especially those related to terrorism in the past, could not be trusted with strategic American assets. Also, they thought that foreign countries should not have managerial responsibilities over ports due to divided loyalties and concerns over national independence. Accordingly, all these public opinions were reflected and expressed by the politicians whose pressure constrained Dubai Company to withdraw. Thinking that transportation takes place through a global network of companies is slightly incorrect. Ports are vulnerable to the entry of terrorists or illicit weapons because of the large number of containers that enter U.S. territory. Accordingly, no foreign government should be permitted to own such strategic assets. There are many business assets that can be owned by foreign companies and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Does the capitalism improve the city on the long–term or it is just a short–term of illusionist growth? The capitalism has made huge noises that it is a good role to follow especially with what Dubai had achieved in short time but, how about Dubai real heritage. Dubai capitalism model is a huge mistake because it leads to inequality, support destroying the legacy and cause unstable Economy. First of all, the biggest issue of the capitalism is the inequality and that is why other cities should never copy Dubai. According to Roche,C.(2015), capitalism main idea is monopolization because it is depends on maximizing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nowadays, when anyone visits Dubai it is like visiting an international country with many nationalities but without natives. Because Dubai where built by others which have been taking all over the country now. Indeed, the percentage of natives in Dubai now is less than one percent which is horribly so bad. Although, the late moving of the government to restore the heritage of Dubai the culture and traditions of Dubai has been vanished already and reached Point of no return. And this has too many negative things on the next generation. Also regarding the disappearing of the traditions and the original culture Dubai heritage has been abandoned and natives now are forced to adapt with the residents culture because the residents are the majority now. Also, all the natives are moving out from their own town because Dubai has become a center for prostitution even though, the prostitution are against the low in Dubai but, the whole government have to subject to the current situation because Dubai now is no longer owned by United Arab of Emiratis, it is owned by rich people and they taking control over it. Dubai Urbanization "Things happen at such a speed, in such a fragmented way, and with so little governmental oversight that to find one person with a complete grasp of what's going on is a very, very difficult task," said Reinier de Graaf to Steven Zachs of Metropolis Magazine about the city of Dubai. Dubai is a city with very little history as a town and even less history as a major city; however it has ignited much research, controversy and many to stare in awe from its rapid urbanization. The research will delve into the reasons behind this growth and how it has been used to commodify the rich culture of those whom lived in the place that Dubai currently occupies (Otherwise known as the Bedouins). In the report by Kanna it is argued that while the city has been reprimanded of its exploitation and abuse of workers, it turns a blind eye and simply dismisses it as "work place accidents". Another problem is the prostitution that is taking place in Dubai, while the country is aware of the problem it is not stopping it, with many of the Arabs in neighboring countries simply coming for "foreign prostitutes" (Molavi). The spectacle within this is in relation to Dubai's image; where it tries to sell to foreigners and tourists this image of culture and at the same time safety, it is due to the invisibility of the work force that is providing Dubai with its towering skyscrapers and modernized landscapes. After the incidents of September 11, Dubai has seen a rapid modernization (Zachs). Metropolis Magazine describes it as the economic and cultural center of the future (in comparison to New York City being that of the present). Within the article, Zachs describes the towering skyscrapers and the soon–to–be tallest structure in the world; he however argues that with its rapid urbanization and sudden growth, Dubai is currently the global center of the Arab world, providing many with jobs and financial support to their families. Also, with this rapid modernization and the constant flow of tourists, workers and the diversity of its citizens, Dubai has had to satisfy many needs; to the point where the strict Muslim country has bars, clubs, and ... Goves and Go described Dubai in their report (2009:73) as "riding the waves of globalization, having firmly established itself in less than fifteen years, as an important node in the network of global flows". Dubai's strategic expansion has been factored towards its large influence within the tourism and leisure industries– instead of the competitive oil markets in which its neighbouring countries like Saudi Arabia and Qatar are known for. Leisure, as defined by Page and Connell (2010:10) describesw leisure not as a singular discipline, but as multiple factors which incorporate elements of geography, sociology, economics, politics, history and psychology, thus it can be difficult to fully define the term 'leisure' however often it has been associated with times of relaxation or non–work time for many travellers. To fully evaluate Dubai's position as a suitable leisure industry this essay will explore the framework proposed by Dimitrios Buhalis in his paper 'The Competitive Destination'. There is so much to see form the drop–dead architecture to the metro; from the vigorously kept grass to the natural desert, and of course the tantalizing advertisements. Whether it's a new product or a new city you'll see it... on cardboard. Oh, did I mention the expensive line–up of luxury cars that roam around too? The highway is surrounded by high rises and each one has its own unique architecture. Being a rather futuristic/touristy city all the buildings seem to have adapted a code. Rule number one would probably be: One must create a unique and eye–catching exterior. Rule number two: One must decorate said exterior with astounding array of lights when sun sets. Rule ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... You can sometimes see the metro running alongside the highway on the elevated bridge. But, of course, not the whole highway is surrounded by buildings. There are also many construction sites which give a window into what Dubai used to be like: a lot of dust and sand. There are some parts however, in which one might spot a bit of greenery. It's both artificial and real at the same time. Artificial in the sense that it's not natural to the land and that it must be watered ten times a day to maintain, and real in the sense that it's not a piece of plastic. Which is commendable because of the arid climate here. As I'm sure we all know, no road is complete without advertisements and Dubai is no different. For example it's hard to miss the huge brick wall that runs a few miles long advertising Dubai Sports City that is currently being built. Or the huge structure that's concealing the construction site of Dubai Lagoon and at the same time is ostentatiously showing off what it's supposed to look like. Then of course there are the regular advertisements of phones and such glowing at nighttime and commanding your attention. But no analysis of the roads of Dubai is complete without the cars that roam on the road. Mostly you'll see the average Toyota or Nissan. But also accompanying them are Benzes, Lexi, and other luxury/exotic cars. The unusual thing is the quantity of these types of cars which number unusually high. The Economic Growth Of Dubai Gibbs 2 Scott Gibbs Dr. Jones Islamic History 5–6–16 Economic Growth of Dubai Now known as a tourist destination like no other, Dubai was once a small fishing and pearling community of close to 1,200 people. Appearing regularly in Western pop culture, such as, movies, music, television shows, and advertising, the city of Dubai has come a long way from its humble origins. The purpose of this paper is to look at what contributing economic and cultural factors, throughout history, that have contributed to the explosive growth of Dubai, with the early establishment of trade being a key feature. To fully understand the scale of development that has taken place, it is required to understand some of the history that has led to its current status as a leader in the Arabian Gulf regional economy and a luxury travel destination. Though the area that would later become Dubai had been settled since approximately 2000 BCE, the first recording in modern history dates to 1822. Initially known as Debai, the area was home to the Bani Yas tribe. Originally a dependency of Abu Dhabi, the village sustained itself by fishing, pearl diving, and minor sea trade. On June 9, 1833, led by Maktoum Bin Butti Al Maktoum, 800 members of the Al Bu Falasah clan peacefully took over the village and established the al–Maktoum dynasty, which still rules Dubai, and the UAE, to this day. (Hussein 2011) Therefore many of the people in Dubai will not drink this water in fear that they will become ill. This is not good as people refuse to buy the water resulting in a decrease in the economy. Therefore there is a significant amount of waste (Hussein 2011) as people do not want to consume the water and are too scared to use the water when cooking or bathing. The harsh climate also adds to the need for fresh water to ensure that people do not suffer from dehydration and malnutrition. The people are not changing the way in which they farm, as they do not know how to farm and what to farm when there is a lack of water. This results in a lower yield, as farmers are not producing sufficient amounts of food. If the UAE continues at the rate they are going with regards to water, they will enter into a stage where they will have 'water poverty (Hussein 2011).' This would result in disease and dehydration as well as, the city will not be able to maintain the central district. This will result in a decrease in tourism in the country. Tourism is Dubai's main source of income as their oil supply is running low. The source mentioned above is biased. The sources only mention the water scarcity problem. The efforts to correct the problem are not highlighted. The source is reliable as it is a research project done by the Dhofar University; the article is a result of the findings. It supports the ... Synopsis Of Dubai International Airport Dubai International Airport Dubai International Airport was conceptualized to function as Dubai 's primary airport and the regions busiest for the foreseeable future without the need for relocation or the building of another airport when passenger figures increased. The area was chosen near to Dubai, to attract passengers from the city of Dubai rather than travel to the busier Sharjah International Airport. The planned location originally was Jebel Ali. The original masterplan for the existing airport initially involved a dual terminal and one runway configuration over two phases with provisions for another two passenger terminals in the near future. Phase 1 included the construction for the first passenger terminal, the first runway, 70 aircraft parking bays, support facilities and structures, including a large maintenance hangar, the first fire station, workshops and administrative offices, an airfreight complex, two cargo agents buildings, in–flight catering kitchen and a 285ft control tower. Construction for the second phase would commence immediately after the completion of Phase 1 and include the second runway, 50 new aircraft parking bays in addition to the existing 70 bays, a second fire station and a third cargo agent building. The third phase included construction of a new terminal (now the parts of Terminal 1 's main building and Concourse C) and an additional 60 parking bays, as well as new aircraft maintenance facility. Dubai Aviation And International Airport Introduction Since the building of Dubai's first airport in 1959, Dubai's aviation industry has grown into one of the world's largest logistical hubs. With the addition of a $32 billion facility, The Al Maktoum International Airport, Dubai's aviation industry has had local, regional, and global impact, positioning Dubai as a world hub in the Middle East for tourism, trade, and commerce (Greenway, 2013, p 33). This essay will explore the aviation model in Dubai from the creation of its first airport in 1959, to the planned opening of The Al Maktoum International Airport to passenger travel in 2015. Topics of this paper will include how Dubai's aviation model has impacted the economies of both regional and international communities, and how the current infrastructure of Dubai's logistics industry will affect the growth within the Dubai aviation model. Citing recent studies, this paper will explore how the Dubai aviation sector has contributed to its own region's growth while threatening the status of past international aviation hubs such as Britain's Heathrow airport. The ambition of Dubai's ruling government will be discussed as a major factor in the growth of Dubai's aviation model. Specifically, how Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Maktoum's ambition and vision has helped "establish the emirate as an award–winning logistics hub" (Greenway, 2013, p 33). One city comes to mind when thinking about the United Arab Emirates, Dubai. The discovery of oil in this emirate allowed for massive infrastructure projects and transportation improvements to attract foreign investors and visitors. This report examines how the city of Dubai has changed by developing tourism. Phases of Development Dubai has undergone four major development phases since its beginning. The very first stage happened around 1900–1955 and had some initial issues expanding due to some economic hardships and a huge increase in the population. From 1956–1970, Dubai began its second phase of development based on a 1960 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Some problems the city is now facing include land ownership/distribution, adequate housing, modern public transportation systems and the polarization of the low–income class and the wealthy. Land and housing challenges. One of the main problems encountered with fast–paced urbanization is land ownership and the process of updating dilapidated housing facilities. According to state policy, all national males over the age of 20 must receive a plot of land that is at least 15000 square feet. Dubai is a predominantly automobile driven state. A major challenge the city faces is creating a modern transportation system in the rapidly expanding urban area. As most people travel by automobile, fewer than 5% of person trips are by public transport. The automobile dependent city encounters high volume traffic during peak hours and hardly adequate parking facilities. Another hardship faced is economic classification of classes. Although Dubai is rich from oil, much of that money is controlled by the wealthy and powerful upper class especially the Sheik. In principle everyone is welcome in the awe–inspiring edifices sprawling across the city, nonetheless this theory is confounded by reality: only those that are either customers or nationals of the Emirate can meet the expense of much of these structures, with innumerable low–income migrants essentially excluded by a subtle system of priority entries, fees and membership cards (Acuto, ... The United Arab Emirates Sustainable Development Throughout the extent of time in which humans have inhabited the Earth, it has only been in the past couple hundred years that humanity has developed technology at an astonishing rate. From the early 1800s and onward, the human population has skyrocketed and advancements in technology have rapidly progressed through the course of a relatively short period of time. In that time, society has become a massive, interconnected network of people that are dependent on resources that originate from different parts of the world. With the technology of today, society has enabled resources that range from food to oil, to be transported to areas of the world in which those select resources are not available. An extreme example of this would be the city of Dubai, which is part of one of the seven emirates that constitute the United Arab Emirates. Dubai is one of the most impressive and wealthiest cities in the world and is well known for the luxurious lifestyle, extremely modernized architecture, and can be viewed as the epitome of a Westernized society. However, the land of the United Arab Emirates is sandy and barren, and not capable of being used for agricultural purposes, there is no major fresh water supply, and very few natural resources. With the absence of farmland and water, Dubai is a city that depends on the resources found worldwide that are purchased with the revenue from oil exports.
