1984 Commentary
The second half of 1984 was good but not what I imagined. Winston meets Julia, a girl that he
works with. He thinks she work for ¨big brother¨ but when they get to know each other they both
dislike big brother. They start to do illegal things and disobey big brother without telling anyone.
Another one of their co–workers named O'brien invites them over. He tells them that he is against
big brother and Winston and Julia tells him that they are too. Later that night the police come and
take Winston and Julia away, O'brien lied to Winston and Julia and is actually part of big brother.
They get tortured until they become under full control of big brother. Once they are under big
brothers control they are put back into the world to do nothing. I thought the end would be more
exciting, I thought Winston and Julia would actually put up a fight against big brother. The big word
I chose for the second half of 1984 is innumerable. I believe that innumerable means thin or weak.
The context clues that led me to believe that are ¨They were standing in the shade of hazel bushes.
The sunlight, filtering through the innumerable leaves, was still hot on their faces.¨ When it says the
sunlight is filtering through the innumerable leaves, that makes me believe the leaves are so thin that

I chose this because in the second half of this book Winston truly changes as a character. He starts
out not trusting anyone or anything afraid of big brother. Then he meets a girl that works at the same
place as Winston, her name Julia. Winston and Julia start to disobey big brother by doing illegal
things. A co–worker of Julia and Winston named O'Brien is working for big brother. He catches
them and gets them in big trouble. Big brother brainwashes the both of them and now they are
released back into the world. Winston is not normal anymore, he went from being afraid of big
brother to being controlled by big

Monsters Social Commentary
Monsters (2010) is a modern–day fictional monster film which, acts as a social commentary,
touching upon political dilemmas, science fiction, romance and public anxieties. The narrative of the
film– based in Mexico– is a world in which the monsters are huge octopus–like aliens. For the past
6 years they have lived in a large area of Mexico that has now been confined as an 'infected zone'
however, a huge wall has been built on the Mexico–USA border to keep the aliens out. The film
follows a photographer; one of the main characters, Andrew, and his boss' daughter (Sam) – the
other main character – as he warily attempts to escort her safely back to her father in the USA after a
rogue alien attack left her injured, and the romance between the two throughout their journey. This
film uses these aliens with dramatic, symbolic effect to also act as a metaphorical narrative for
current societal issues; offering a pragmatic analysis of these underlying ... Show more content on

The image of the warzone is elaborated throughout the film, with the settings including tanks,
weapons and general destruction. Another scene in the film when Andrew and Sam got in the cab,
seeing the destructed buildings and Sam asked the taxi driver, "Do you feel safe living here?" and
the taxi driver replied, "Where would we go? My work, my family is all here." This representation is
an iconic resemblance imitating areas of real present civilian conflict zones such as those in
Afghanistan and Iraq, portraying the destruction of the lives of the people who live there and the
difficulties faced by those who have loved ones entangled in conflict, either as a military or civilian
presence. Although we are aware that this destruction was in fact caused by conflict between
military and the aliens, the way the scene has been composed and edited shows clear visual
similarities to images depicted in the media of destruction in contemporary

De Nadie Commentary
"De Nadie" Commentary
This documentary is focused on the numerous immigrants originating from Central America,
undertaking an extremely dangerous journey of about 2500 miles up north towards the southern
border of the United States, where they hope to cross and profit from the wealth available in the
U.S.. The movie is accordingly named "de Nadie", which translates into "No–One", and follows
various immigrants on their journeys, interviewing them on their way and depicting the many
injustices and setbacks encountered by each of them. The difficulties emphasized in this
documentary are mainly the one's which are usually overlooked when discussing the issue of U.S
immigration, including political, economical, medical and criminal ... Show more content on

Throughout the documentary stories are told by immigrants who crossed paths with La Mara, some
about fighting back and being savagely injured, others about obeying and surviving and others who
hid and lost everything.
Contributing to all this violence and injustice, one would hope for the just calls of the police.
Unfortunately the police in Central America is just as bad, and is referred to in the movie as the
"thieves with permits". The police is generally known not to help the immigrants or at least act
judicially, but rather to assault them, stealing everything they own from them and beating and
abusing them sometimes resulting in casualties. This is confirmed in the documentary by many
immigrants and civilians in Mexico who have personally experienced the abuse and see no bright
future for justice in their country. The police is also accused of being corrupt, so not much can be
done against the situation and malpractices, also due to the unwillingness of the victims to file
complaints and raise awareness. Most are unwilling out of fear of being deported back to their own
country, this bringing us to the next issue, the Immigrations Department. Unfortunately once the
immigrants get to the border of Mexico, the next obstacle addressed in the movie is the Mexico
Immigrations Department. In the documentary the Immigration Department explains how Mexico
has become extremely involved in the U.S immigration procedure of the

Data Commentary Introduction After reading and evaluating six articles written by experts on
obesity, the data seems to imply that better educating people about how their behavioral lifestyle
choices effect their future and current health is the best solution. The six journal articles evaluated
and analyzed include: David Freedman's article, "How to Fix the Obesity Epidemic," published in
Scientific American in 2011. Green Gregory's article, "Physical Activity and Childhood Obesity:
Strategies and Solutions for Schools and Parents," published in Education in 2012. Micheal

Advocacy and regulation can play a large role in prevention of the problem while physicians
consistently research medical solutions for the obese community. Michael Wieting is a professor of
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Lincoln Memorial University where he is also the Dean of
Clinical Medicine. Like Green, Wieting cites the Center for Disease Control and Prevention often
throughout his paper. Wieting acknowledges different causes and solutions in his paper, and pulls
information from many different scholarly papers written by his peers. His paper avoids bias by
explaining multiple viewpoints on the issue, which allows the reader to interpret and make
conclusions without any sway from the author. The article was written in 2008 and cites sources
from the same year, making the statistics relevant relevant and current information. George
Blackburn reminds readers about the science behind the epidemic of obesity in his article, "Science
Based Solutions to Obesity: What are the Roles of Academia, Government, Industry, and
Healthcare." Scientists are constantly researching reasons behind why some people are obese as well
as possible scientific solutions that go beyond the everyday "go to the gym" solution. As obesity
kills more and more people each year, medical institutions are making a point to study the
biochemistry behind the issue. Blackburn is an expert in the field of healthcare and nutrition, he

Ode on Melancholy commentary
AP Literature 19 August 2013 Ode on Melancholy John Keats's poem, "Ode on Melancholy", serves
as an instructional manual on how to cope with sadness and the feeling of melancholy. Through his
vivid use of lyrical language and allusions, Keats's is able to depict vivid images that haunt the soul
and is able to convey his message that the only way to deal with a sense of melancholy is to accept
it. Keats believes that once one can accept sadness and make it a part of his identity, then he can
overcome the overwhelming feelings of depression and find true happiness in life. The author also
implies that happiness must be earned; to find happiness, one must endure the travesties and turmoil
to reach it. Overall, Keats's work has the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this statement, Keats is stating that should sadness appear, one should embrace the sadness and
take it in rather than to push it away. By absorbing the sadness and drowning it out with thoughts of
happiness, such as "gazing upon her peerless eyes", one can find happiness once again. The third
stanza begins with Keats addressing the mistress as she "Dwells with beauty – beauty that must die".
Continuing with the metaphor of the mistress and the feeling of sadness, Keats says that beauty must
die. By saying that the mistress is beautiful, Keats is implying that sadness and happiness are linked.
The happiness, which is the beauty of the mistress, in life is evanescent and continuously leaving.
This comparison of happiness and sadness and the beauty of the woman reinforces the idea that
happiness isn't permanent. It is short–lived and comes with its repercussions. Through his poem,
"Ode on Melancholy", Keats tries to find the balance between happiness and show his readers how
to achieve it. He tells the readers that by accepting the sadness, one can find happiness, even if it is
only temporary. Through his allusions and lyrical language, Keats is able to paint the image of
happiness and sadness through comparisons to poisonous drugs and beautiful sceneries as well as
convey his message to his

Commentary On The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby
(adapted for the stage by Simon Levy)
Introduction
F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby is an impressive social commentary on many themes
such as power, money, greed, social status, and so on. The Great Gatsby is originally a novel which
has been adapted as a play by Simon Levy. I intend to look at the theoretical aspects of this play and
my major focus will be on the social stratification, inequality and gender roles in the American life
at that time. The story of the Great Gatsby falls into the timeline of the 1920s.
The Story
The story of the Great Gatsby is very interesting. It takes place in Long Island in America. A
mysterious man Jay Gatsby builds a mansion in West Egg (a fictional place in Long island). Jay ...

The Buchanans would never accept Gatsby as being in the same social status as them because the
Buchanans have had wealth and power in the family for generations and Gatsby had just acquired
the wealth. The Buchanans know that Gatsby comes from the lower class background and so they
think Gatsby's manner, behavior and taste can never match that of the Buchanans. Warner, Meeker
and Eels (2006) describe the concept of the American Dream as follows: "In the bright glow and
warm presence of the American Dream all men are born free and equal. Everyone in the American
Dream has the right, and often the duty, to try to succeed and to do his best to reach the top".
Warner, Meeker and Eells do consider this definition of American Dream contradictory though as
they state that "If all men are born equal, there can be no top level to strive for. No such equality,
neither in position nor in opportunity, exists and that a person's opportunities are very much
dependent on family background" (Warner, Meeker & Eells 2006). So, Gatsby's wealth still doesn't
let him enter the elite social class and this shows the inequality between the rich. During the play,
we can clearly see this when Daisy Buchanan is completely dazzled in the new found riches of Jay
Gatsby but later when Tom exposes Gatsby about his 'shady' businesses, Daisy's reaction is of shock
and she stops talking to Gatsby after that. For Daisy, just being wealthy is

it is essential to address employees like Nicole. Her rumours and constant gossip have become a

meeting should also address Paige, George and Sam's concerns regarding Max's behaviour. In
addition she should issue a warning to Nicole in relation to her inclination to exaggerate, for
example, when it appears Paige and the others become concerned she does nothing to console their
fear, instead she confirms it by adding "I'm not so crazy after all, am I? I'm telling you, Max is on

Otherwise Commentary
Otherwise Commentary The poem Otherwise is short, simple and eloquent. The author, Cilla
McQueen, describes two lovers that are located on "opposite" sides of the world. McQueen uses the
title to emphasize the conflicts. The speaker's emotions are expressed through two main themes;
love and distance. Imagery and diction maximize the emotions associated with these themes.
Additionally, she uses many literary devices throughout the poem for effect. From the onset, the title

There is no iambic pentameter or rhyming pattern. This style gives a conversational, intimate tone;
as if the reader is eavesdropping in on the two lovers. Secondly, this informal tone is contrasted by
the formal and decisive shape of the poem. Furthermore, it is evident by the physical appearance of
the poem that that a conflict of the settings exists, "I watch often not traffic or television but hour by
hour the huge tide". The speaker compares two different lifestyles; one of the speaker situated on a
coast; soothing, relaxing and simple. Meanwhile her lover is located in a city; loud, tense and
complex. The physical divide in the poem presents the conflict in the settings inferring the conflict
in the relationship. This conflict is reflected by the change in tone from stanza 1 to stanza 2. The
first stanza is full of facts as she sadly describes her reality while the second stanza is full of
emotions and hope expressing the metaphysical situation the lovers would be in if united. "If you
were with me now" underlines the ambiguity of when "now" will come. As the author guides the
reader through the relationship, she dreams of the setting and activities giving hope that the lovers
"would" do such things once together. An interesting simile is used if and when the speaker's lover
comes back to her "favorite beach". This symbolizes home, the nest; the beach represents for the
speaker a place of nurturing, peace, safety and joy. Enjambment is also

Social Commentary In 1984
"It is often said that literature is a voice for social commentary. How is this true of the novel 1984"?
Historically, literature has always echoed the key issues and themes present during that time. In the
period which Orwell wrote this novel, totalitarian government was a popular concept seeing
implementation around the world such as Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and Mussolini's Italy. In the
novel 1984. While Orwell's world is a fictional one, it can be said that he uses it as a voice for social
commentary, and he predictions as to what a world would be like if totalitarian governments would
rule the world. This essay will aim to explore how Orwell goes about doing this.
Orwell draws from features of these totalitarian regimes in order to create the setting in which the
story takes place. In the novel, the narrator describes big brother on the poster as a "mustachiod
figure". This figure is a reference to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The words under the picture read "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU" in all capitals. This
phrase immediately establishes the power–distance relationship between the party and its members.
All citizens are constantly being watched over and are powerless compared to the party. The word
"watching" implies that all citizens are under scrutiny from big brother himself with the "mustachiod
figure" playing the role of a "big brother", watching over his citizens and controlling their actions
and movements. Such a lack of freedom creates a stark contrast between normal people's lives and
the lives of Orwell's characters, and therefore acts like a warning as to what might happen in the
future if the rise of totalitarianism continued in Europe. Through this, Orwell is also criticizing this
movement by highlighting its key disadvantages and drawbacks.
Furthermore, Orwell uses bizarre and unfamiliar concepts to the reader to comment on totalitarian

Traditions Of A Jewish Commentary
Traditions such as homemade decorations, Grandma's banana pudding, and ugly sweaters often
remain close to family's hearts. Candles, decorations, food, and outfits, the list of customs never
terminates! Two families, who practice traditions in the book, The Chosen by Chaim Potok, include
the Malter's and the Saunders'. David and Reuven Malter enjoy weekly services, prayer, and special
articles of clothing in their lives as orthodox Jews*check for accuracy. Also, in the Saunders' family,
the boys wear intricate outfits and the father bestows the role of tzaddick to one of the male children
because they practice the Jewish sect of Hadism. Although these two families' rituals differ, they
both participate in the studying of the holy scriptures, a Jewish commentary, each Shabbat, or

customs, and the families share the tradition of studying the holy Jewish books. Beginning with the
Malter family, Mr. Malter and Reuven involve themselves in many traditions. These traditions
include: services, prayer, and customary articles of clothing (prayer shaw{113}, ). One quote
displays the fact that the Malter family regularly attended services and exhibits one facet of the

Mere Christian Commentary
"This parable, unique to Luke, requires the utmost care in its interpretation. It must neither be over–
allegorized as it was by the early church fathers, nor reduced to a simplistic meaning hardly worthy
of Jesus' teaching. Above all, it must be understood in its context, with attention to the questions of
vv.25 and 29 and to Jesus' application in vv.36–37," write Liefeld and Pao (The Expositor's Bible
Commentary 2007: 197). It is highly important to an exegetical reading of this passage, found in St.
Luke's gospel in chapter ten, verses twenty–five through thirty–seven, that the focus lie on the
context of the passage. The central theme of this passage is that "one cannot define one's neighbor;

'Teacher,' he said, 'what must I do to inherit eternal life?'
The lawyer here is not the same sort of lawyer we know of in our society today. Leon Morris states,
"A lawyer would be concerned not with secular studies, but with the law in the Jewish sense, the
first five books of the Old Testament. Arising from that he would have studied the rest of Scripture
and matters incidental. He was thus a man who might be expected to be both interested in and
knowledgeable about religious affairs" (Tyndale Commentary on Luke 1974: 205). Another
translation refers to this man as "an expert in the Law" meaning the Torah, not the laws governing
society. It is indeed interesting that the man asks a question he already knows the answer to. I can
imagine him being really snide and sarcastic, like a punk junior high kid, as he mouthed off,
"Teacher! What must I do to inherit eternal life?"
He asked the question in order to gain an advantage over Jesus and to show him up or to test him
(Tyndale Commentary on Luke 1975: 205). He also asked a question with no intention of living out
the implications of its answer. Leon Morris notes, "That is to say he asked his question, not in the
search for information, but to see what kind of answer Jesus would produce. He may even have been
hoping that Jesus would do badly..." (Tyndale Commentary on Luke 1975:

The Assault Commentary
1 February 2015
In The Assault by Harry Mulisch, Anton is haunted by his past throughout his life. His past during
World War II consist of witnessing losing his family. This impacts him to the extent that his choices
of living life are influenced by it. From the excerpt of The Assault, Anton finally realizes what he
has done, in which he notices his choices are made from neglecting his past. He sees his current
family asleep and evaluates himself whether or not he should seek the truth of his past from a man
named Takes, knowing that if he does, he would have a different perspective on his life.
Anton is considering if he should seek the truth of his past. His state of mind is being compared to it

Therefore, Anton's "feeling" of "dangerous confusion" makes him lack the ability to quickly make
decisions in critical times.
Anton wants to undergo with his decision even though he finds it to be dangerous. Mulisch
compares Anton's approach to the truth to danger, depicting something dangerous is awaiting Anton
if he approaches the truth. The audience's reaction to this metaphor would be Anton is willing to risk
his life for a new one, in which he cannot stand living a life without gaining knowledge about his
past. Mulisch uses "fish" to describe how Anton gets the "paper" with Takes' contact information.
The audience sees the connotation, "fish," is used to show Anton has made a definite decision, in
which he chooses to know the truth. The "paper" Anton has "fish" will provide him answers of his
past, although it may bring danger.
In conclusion, in The Assault by Mulisch, Anton makes a definite decision to search for the truth
despite knowing the knowledge that he will gain will change him. He does not want to suffer
anymore due to his negligence of his past, instead he desires to move on and live a new way of

C. Commentary: Discuss the central issue addressed in each reading. Explain the relationship among
the different perspectives taken on developing reading competence in each of the readings. What
conclusions might be drawn about the challenges in facilitating literacy for urban and other
underserved students? What approaches might best serve the needs of these students?
Shanahan (2011) makes an excellent point that for each discipline there should be a different way of
ensuring that learning is taking place. Not all disciplines are the same, so their approaches should be
different as well. If students struggle with history they may also struggle with English if they are
taught the same way. Learning goals and strategies vary by class and so should teaching method and
delivery. The points in this article should be taken into consideration when teachers create lesson
plans.
Taylor (2003) et al. in this study investigated the effects of teaching on students' reading
achievement. If students are tested repeatedly via assessment and homework over the same topic
they will lose interest and momentum. Taylor makes a point of showing educators that higher order

It is important to understand that there are many factors that can affect how students learn to read.
Schools and teachers are two factors that determine how students learn. Schools may not always
have the most up to date, or helpful resources to help this demographic of students. Teachers may
not always be prepared to help struggling students. Together these two factors enable the
achievement gap to be what it is. In order to alter the gap schools should first work on helping their

Points of View Commentary
'Points of View' Commentary
'Points of View', written by Lucinda Roy, is a poem that features different points of view (as the title
suggests) on the subject of water: those of women collecting water in, what can be assumed to be, an
African country and those of a person living in a modernised (possibly a 'Western') country.
Furthermore, Roy seems to be critical of the aforementioned Western lifestyle and this poem
presents an underlying moral that everybody should be grateful for what they have, regardless of
how basic those things are. Roy's poem is comprised of two main stanzas; the first of which details
the women's daily struggle to provide water for their families. The term "scoop up" evokes an image
of a woman scooping up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is interesting how some of the narrator's Western–like education seeps through into the stanza;
now, in contrast to the first stanza, there are terms such as the children jumping not through 'water',
but from "element to element" (air to water) and imagery of diamond–drops shooting along
"trajectories too long for me to measure", as opposed to the first stanza's fairly basic lexical choice.
Overall, this poem displays two different points of view surrounding water – those of an assumed
Western woman and African woman (I feel that it is safe to assume that the narrator is a woman,
since there is a lot of references to women in the first stanza – thus setting the tone for the rest of the
poem). As we can see, the two views are vastly different but it is as though the narrator questions her
own views of water and seeks answers from the people who value water the most; something that
would be a somewhat humbling experience, I'm sure. Finally, I would say that this poem is very
relevant to today – many people living in a Western country do seem to take water for granted, and
this poem seems very critical of that, as there are people who have to struggle to obtain what is
considered one of life's most basic

The Heart Sutra is a Mahayana Buddhist text. Mahayana means "The Great Vehicle" (41). This
refers to the bodhisattva vow and path, which involves developing the ten perfections. The Heart
Sutra is a text centered on the training to develop the perfection of wisdom. At the heart of this
training is the realization about the truth about emptiness. Buddhist scholarship involves
commentary on the sutras. In Tibetan Buddhism, there is a practice of acknowledging one's teacher
and monastic lineage so as to provide legitimacy and authenticity to the teachings. In what follows, I
shall give my own commentary of the Heart Sutra, and thus I shall acknowledge the lineage through
which this information passed down to me. My knowledge of the ... Show more content on

Nothing is independent, thus all is empty. What we see as real, even within the descriptions given by
Buddhist texts, are pieces surrounding nothing. There is no essence. Even those pieces are
dependent.
Thus we arrive at "Intrinsic Existence". Everything is dependent upon everything else. Everything is
interconnected through the karmatic chain of causality. The five aggregates are that which was
conditioned by things that were in turned conditioned, and so on. This process goes forever since
samsara is without conceivable beginning. Thus nothing arises independently. All is dependently
originated. If all is dependently arising, and everything originates within and through other causes,
this then allows for a deconstruction of all Buddhist Doctrine, and indeed, the bodhisattva
Avaloshivara proceeds to do so. He negates the Four Noble Truths, the five–aggregates, the dukkha,
the dharma, enlightenment, and even its own teaching, stating, "there is no wisdom" (60). The third
section of the text is the training for those who are advanced in their spiritual development and
consists of a mantra. A mantra literally means "mind protection" and its powerful words when
chanted or spoken allowed act as a protective spell. This protection is against the influences of
conditioned ignorance, or the temptations of Mara, whose lot in life is to lead others away from
enlightenment. The mantra section of the text consists of two sections, the explanation

Harris quoted another author to say, "these linguistic and stylistic considerations, when weighed
against the undoubted resemblances between the first 20 chapters and chapter 21, it offers no
sufficient information that would lead one to believe that chapter 21 was written by any other
author." Harris contends that most scholars, do not make the decision for or against the identity of
the authorship based on the stylistic or linguistic evidence, but rather, that argument is made on the
basis of the content or logical argument flow. Harris uses the knowledge of other scholars regarding
chapter 21 of the Gospel of John. He highlights another scholar when viewing the idea if chapter 21
was just an addendum to the Gospel of John or is it an item of necessity. He quotes S. Smalley to
say this, "Smalley demonstrates that chapter 21 is not as much of an addendum as some believe, and
that it does in fact provide a necessary conclusion to the Fourth Gospel, which does not merely end
with the confession by Thomas, but offer a repetitive emphasis that the disciples will continue the
witness of Jesus even after He has ascended to His Father, in addition to carrying out the mission

Commentary On Date Rape
I found this play difficult to read. The overall tone of the piece was tinged with sadness. As I read, I
would have to occasionally put it down to keep from crying. I'm not exactly sure why this piece
affected me so emotionally, but I feel that an emotional response to artwork is pretty significant. As I
felt like crying, I was surprised by the section which talks about whiteness and a prescriptive notion
that people shouldn't be emotional. The lady in blue states "...yes let's go on & and be white...let's
think our way out of feeling" (shange 54). This was interesting commentary on the way in which
dominant culture undervalues the body and emotions. Certainly all people have the capacity to be
emotional and venerable, but these qualities are often ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was violent and in many ways another sort of bodily invasion. First the speaker must endure the
brutality and humiliation of rape, and then she must endure the pain and danger of this medical
procedure. This brought me back to Rich's Compulsory heterosexuality and her complication of
consent and choice. I would very firmly argue that abortion should be an option for women, but I
wonder how this procedure can be free from coercion within a violent patriarchal rape culture. I also
found that the mixture of experiences this play portrays is very important. These women can share
certain aspects of their experience, but they are far from the same. I found the lady in blue's story
especially impactful. She is a clear embodiment of the way in which trauma and tragedy can make
one feel that they must be cold and distant to survive and avoid further brutality. She argues that
"nice is such a rip–off" and I can certainly see her point (shange 53). The way in which that
bitterness is used against each of the characters is also beautifully written and incredibly

Commentary on Feet
Analysis on Feet Feet is a prose talking about a little child looking at his sister's death. The story is
set in a post war period, when poverty and diseases are everywhere. We can know this by looking at
the date written under the title, "September 1948". The story happened in a working class family in
Ireland. We can know that it is set in Ireland from the little sister's name. From the sentence in line
7, " Una. My younger sister, Una." We know that her name is Una, which is an Irish name, so we
can know that it is an Irish family. It is showed that the family is in working class by looking at the
descriptions of the uncles' work and the mother's feet. In paragraph 4, it mentioned that the uncles
are working in a building site as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It appear in line 17, "Pain and pressure", which are plosives and also appear in line 44, "cough–
crying", which are fricatives. The author uses quite a lot of sensory appeal in the third paragraph
where the narrator is imagining things about the diseases' names. They are mainly sounds and
smells. There is a lexical choice of vocabulary in line 25, "IT had a fright and hiss in it", this
sentences has the word hiss which we usually uses to describe snakes. This shows that the disease is
as danger as snakes. Imagery can be found in the prose too, in the last paragraph, line 48, "the
autumn air darkening" using the image of autumn being the period when most living things die to
describe the dying image. Last but not least, rhetorical questions can be found in the last paragraph.
What ideas did the author expressed through the passage? Poverty is showed in the passage through
the shoes of the characters, knowing how harsh the lives of the mother and the uncles have.
However, the main idea of the passage is the child learning about the nature of death. We know that
the child doesn't know much about the disease nor death, having all those questions that have no
answers. He has fear and is too sudden to him that he can hardly accept. He is far too young that
limited his view point which is expressed by limiting the view point to only seeing feet when being
under a table. "Feet" thoroughly showed how the little boy go through his

His state of mind is being compared to it
"cooling off," conveying he wants to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Commentary On The Secret Of Bees
While reading the entertaining commentary on The secret of bees, my opinions were questioned
more than once. Several of the statements I completely agreed with, while others I disagreed
strongly. The first statement that came to my attention was that "If I were a South Carolina resident,
I would be unhappy since the author's depiction of the state was unflattering." This is true, Sue
Monk Kidd did not persuaded me to visit. However, I doubt that many would be unhappy. The book
took place over 50 years ago and numerous conditions have changed. However, heavy racism is
alive in the South today, and if residents and readers realized what racism actually is, maybe it
would encourage them to change their ways. I wasn't surprised that our Catholic school assigned us
this novel, even though August worships a different religion. The Secret Life of Bees has won
numerous awards and is well loved. Even, though it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The writer of the commentary wrote that it didn't make much sense for black parents to name their
child after a president that was pro–slavery. Blacks weren't educated as equally as whites, and
maybe they just admired the name Zachary and was just a coincidence. I thought that that the
statement about May overreacting on Zach being arrested. It was narrow–minded because the justice
system was different 50 years ago. It has been shown in the book that even with the most minor
offenses, blacks receive more extreme treatment, while whites can beat someone and walk away
scot–free. Even though Zach didn't break the law, the police didn't care that he was innocent. I
disagree on how T. Ray is 100% evil. He is extremely misguided, clueless on how to raise a child, in
grieving, and is reminded of the women he loves every time he looks at his daughter. Although most
of the things he did were inexcusable, we don't receive any background on T. Ray other than that he
was evil. I feel that talking about his part would deepen his

Commentary on the Bat by Roethke
Aliona Fezoua My Expert Commentary 'The Bat' – Theodore Roethke: By day the bat is cousin to
the mouse. He likes the attic of an aging house. His fingers make a hat about his head. His pulse
beat is so slow we think him dead. He loops in crazy figures half the night Among the trees that face
the corner light. But when he brushes up against a screen, We are afraid of what our eyes have seen:
For something is amiss or out of place When mice with wings can wear a human face. Theodore
Roethke's poem 'The Bat' clearly focuses on the animal the bat and effectively conveys through the
latter an important message to the reader. One could interpret this poem in various ways; however a
prominent theme would be that every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By comparing the bat's depiction during both day and night, Roethke may be trying to convey that
the bat is actually no more than a simple and peaceful being, which has been wrongly portrayed for
years. From another point of view, the author could be wanting to convey, through the image of a
bat, that everyone has a 'dark side'. Roethke ingeniously does so in the final line of the poem with
the latter's twist metaphorical ending; "when mice with wings can wear a human face" (Roethke,
10). As previously discussed, bats are usually associated with slyness and darkness, by making the
bat "wear a human face", Roethke is trying to express that bats can sometimes resemble humans and
vice versa. Ultimately, humans can also sometimes 'wear a bat face' and have a darker side. The
author also gives the poem a very descriptive tone through a significant amount of imagery. For
example, the metaphor; "his fingers make a hat about his head" (Roethke, 3), provides a detailed
description of the bat's upper body in such a way that the reader is able to picture the bat as what
Roethke wants him/her to picture it as. One could also infer that the author may again be trying to
make the connection between bat and man; since men wear hats and not bats. Another metaphor
would be; "by day the bat is cousin to the mouse" (Roethke, 1). Of course, mouse

The article discusses the environmental issues that Australia faces as a result of numerous
companies emitting greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. Thanks to that, a negative externality
occurs because the production of goods and services in Australia has a major effect upon a third
party. For example, a company is set up next to a residential area; this will have a negative effect on
the residents living in that region. For this reason the Australian government is deciding whether to
impose taxes on carbon emissions for the worst polluters
Figure 1 shows that the marginal private costs of the Australian firms are below the marginal social

Welfare Loss In figure 2, the deadweight burden had been reduced, because the tax is not identical
to the external cost, therefore the externality has not been eliminated, but it is less than previously
when there was no government intervention.
Although taxes are seen as a way of making polluters pay, there are some problems with this
solution. First, the Australian government will find it very difficult to measure accurately the
pollution created by firms and give a value to it, in which it can be regained by tax. Second, it is also
very hard to identify which firms are polluting and to what extent are they responsible for the
pollution. Third, it is often argued that tax do not actually stop the pollution from taking place.
Furthermore, putting taxes on those firms will lead to inflation because they have higher costs to pay
for, and to compensate for that, they will increase consumer prices.
The shortage in domestic investment could lead to the closure of many firms or movement abroad
and that will doubtless cause unemployment in Australia. Furthermore, while Australia imposes this
tax to help alleviate a global concern, it doesn't necessarily mean its competitors will and the extra
production costs for Australian firms will give it an unfair disadvantage. The

Reflective Commentary
Guidance for completion of your reflective commentary
A reflective approach to your educational and culturalexperience will bring about changes in the
way you perceive your academic environment. Further, this reflective approach can go on to
produce changes in attitudes and awareness which may, in turn, benefit your personal and
professional growth. While a single experience in isolation, such as your overseas or

may serve as a powerful impetus for development of key transferable skills which can directly
impact on your future employability.
So, the purpose of this piece of reflective work is to compare and contrast the environment you ...

Commentary on Field of Autumn
Commentary on Field of Autumn Advancing like a silent threat, the onset of winter is presented
throughout the poem as a season with sinister intent. The "acid breath of noon" approaches in a
"Slow" manner, as if sneaking up on autumn. The personification of the "acid breath" not only
suggests to the reader the fog is murderous, but one could be lead to imagine that the fog is poison
gas. This is because "Field of Autumn" was published in 1947, two years after the Second World
War; clearly the memory of the War would be even more poignant than it is to this day, scars more
fresh, and any references more painful. Continuing with the theme of war, Laurie Lee chooses to

Frankenstein Commentary
In order to make the found poem as close to the original as possible, I intended to add in very few
words that were not in chapter five, the chapter I chose to use as the source for my poem. I also
intended to include Gothic elements which were included in the first few lines when I wrote: "It was
a dreary night, Dismal and wet, The rain poured from a black and comfortless sky. I had worked
hard." A dark stormy night is a Gothic element as it exhibits the metonymy of gloom and horror that
was present throughout the chapter. The inclusion of this Gothic element is insightful because it sets
the stage for a dark gloomy event soon to occur. The poem was intended to side with Victor
Frankenstein and paint a scary picture of the monster. While I was compiling the words for the poem
from the chapter, I noticed that Victor Frankenstein used so many words to negatively describe the
creature. The words used to for the monster were perfect so I decided to side against the monster. I
had the preconception that in order to advocate for Victor, I had to use the harshest words to attack
the monster. I wrote "It became a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived, the
demoniacal corpse to which I had created." Using harsh words impressed upon the reader a negative
view on the monster. Towards the end of the poem I decided to integrate some drama, suspense, and
fear. For example, I wrote: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Patchwork Commentary
Patchwork Analysis
Eavan Boland's unique poem, Patchwork, allows the reader to be privy to the private thoughts of a
persona, presumably the author herself, as she struggles to answer the question of fate or destiny.
Throughout the poem, while quilting alone late at night, the speaker puzzles over the randomness of
the universe, utilizing the simple quilt metaphor to inspire a final epiphany.
Immediately revealing the central theme of the poem as well as alluding to the narrator's apparent
self–doubt, the first stanza is an imperative aspect of this piece. The speaker begins by stating that
she has "been thinking at random on the universe, or rather, how nothing in the universe is random".
So commences her journey to solve the question: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The word "mechanical" suggests that the woman is acting mindlessly, almost as if guided by a
higher power. Fate determines that the quilt will be made, and so it will be. It guides the woman's
hands as her mind once again floats away from reality and begins to explore the metaphysical world.
In addition, upon describing her "secondhand sewing machine", the narrator further exposes her
self–depreciating character.
In the fifth stanza, the speaker makes inconsiderable progress in solving the crucial question
regarding the randomness of the universe. As she realizes the overwhelming number of uncertainties
in the universe, the woman chooses instead to concentrate on the task at hand, turning her "back...to
the dark" or the unknowns. However, she is unable to resist the compelling temptation of mystery,
and quickly attempts to contemplate the "stars and bits of stars and little bits of bits" which reside
throughout the universe. While the "bits" in this statement signify randomness, the "stars" represent
the unknown. This symbolism, coupled with the use of repetition and alliteration, emphasize the
woman's sheer confusion on the matter at hand. The vast uncertainty of the universe has forced her
to consider the possibility of a wholly random universe. The persona's confusion is confirmed
through her question: "is it craft or art?" In this circumstance, "craft" represents a universe in which

'The Cyclist' Poetry Commentary
"The Cyclist" poetry commentary
"The Cyclist" is a poem by Louis MacNeice which romanticizes the fleeting joys of childhood.
These joys are emphasised through imagery of summer – be it activities, food, the beach, a bicycle
ride, various techniques such as juxtaposition and enjambment are used to evoke fond memories
from the reader.
MacNeice's poem is set in the southwest of England, on a hill with a chalk horse carved into it. It is
during the height of summer, when the grasshoppers are buzzing and the children are playing
outside. The character is a boy or a group of boys, and they are riding bicycles down a hill near to
the chalk horse. The structure of the poem is quite disjointed, with only five sentences throughout
three stanzas. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

George Orwell 's 1984, is a novel about the life of Winston Smith living in a totalitarianism state
where Big Brother has control, power and dominates the lives of citizens. There are many
significant paragraphs which stand out in the book however I extracted the passage on pages 127,
128 from "Folly, Folly, his heart....." to "...the absence of a telescreen" because it has great literary
insight and significant elements of symbolism behind it.(This is where Winston heard the prole

In the next paragraph, is the description of how Winston spotted the prole woman singing. The

was still high in the sky, and in sun–filled court ' represents how far light is at reach for the women
and citizens of the country. The sun is a motif which represents light, brightness and hope which
brings happiness, however it is out of reach therefore they still yet to live in the dark. The
descriptions of the women, 'a monstrous women, solid as a Normal pillar, with brawny red forearms
' is visual image of how women and people living in the state are unattractive as there isn 't time to
polish themselves and are only dutiful and filling their responsibilities for the Party. The prole
woman is also seen as a reproductive virility as she is 'pegging out a series of square white things
which Winston recognized as babies diapers '. The diapers represent the prole women giving birth to
the future generation. The prole women 's children are a symbol for hope as Winston hopes that
there will be change in the future with hope that the proles will eventually come to realization and
rebel against and overthrow the party. The lyrics of her song foreshadows the future as it says, 'it

Social Commentary On A Sprawls
How do I start reviewing a film like this? I mostly just felt very stifled with the rambunctious quips
that flow in this film like a breeze and fill it up to the very brim. Its social commentary is analogous
to the indomitably obnoxious teenage angst profiled rampantly that is ever so pervasive in this day
and age. Things to note after a thoroughgoing watch of this are that it's simply not quite your
standard typified internalized drama that sprawls incessantly and instead conjures a very pleasant, a
somewhat weirdly endearing troupe of personages that you can't help but appreciate because they're

not trying to cross the line and re–invent the wheel, but merely give the viewer a comfortable and
darkly comical short–of–two–hours–time–frame; and unsurprisingly succeeds because it has those

Hazel doesn't like that he will go to whatever length to take care of his family. Layfield is killed
without due justice. His only crime is that he does what he does for himself inspite of others. This is
only resolved when he decides to repent just before he dies. Tension Tension that comes from the
conflict is exhibited before he dies. Support Commentary "Take off that suit," Haze shouted and
started the car forward after him. Solace began to lope down the road, taking off his coat as he went.
"Take it all off," Haze yelled, with his face close to the windshield" (O'Connor 196) O'Connor
makes this such a compelling scene. Its like she wanted to show the worst of Hazel through Solace's
hazing. O'Connor brings tension by heightening the anger and fear between both of the characters.
In this moment O'Connor shows how even the somewhat best of people can turn evil and how the
worst of people become somewhat innocent. Mrs. Flood Conflict Person vs. Self: Mrs. Flood

Lord of the Flies Commentary
Passage Commentary: Lord of the Flies, Pages 109–111 In this passage from Lord of the Flies by
William Golding, the reader gets deep insight into Ralph's mind and how the boys are adapting to
life on the island. Occurring around the middle of the novel, this passage dives into the thoughts of
Ralph to see what he is really feeling about being stranded. It shows how the other boys are coping,
and it demonstrates the two different sides of the island; the reader now sees the dangerous, wild
side representing the savagery of the boys, and the safe, light side representing their innocence.
When the reader looks at the passage with an inquisitive eye, one will see that Golding's choice in
tone and content gives the passage many levels of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The island has the light and the dark side. This is a symbol for the light and dark side of the boys on
the island. The safe side is described in a happy and hopeful tone using words such as "filmy
enchantments," "mirage," "dream of rescue," and "irresistible." But as the reader dives into the other
side, one feels the hope drain out and the author begins to use words such as "cold," "clipped,"
"hard," and "condemned." The ocean is characterized as having "Shining hair," "arm of surf,"
"fingers of spray," and "rising with a roar." Here the reader sees how Golding personifies the ocean
and one watches as the sea taunts Ralph, showing the power of nature over man. The emphasis of
the dark tone used by the author adds to the feeling of the passage. The words chosen by Golding
were clearly chosen thoughtfully to give the darkness meaning, layers and depth to the description.
As the reader ends the passage, the dark tone continues with words such as, "painful," "gripped,"
and "stiff." This dark description leads up to the last sentence of the passage said by Simon: "You'll
get back to where you came from." The emphasis of the quote is clearly on the word "you" as in the
later chapters the reader sees the death of Simon. Simon has insight into Ralph's thoughts here. The
reader can see, with a close read, that Simon has insight into what Ralph is thinking without Ralph
even speaking aloud. Here,

Cma Care Commentary
Commentary on pharmacare has been provided by many health care professional associations and
organizations.
The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) adopted a policy resolution at their 2015 Annual
Meeting to support the development of an equitable and comprehensive national pharmacare
program. They believe that there are scalable solutions that may be adopted with federal and
provincial funding to meet this standard. CMA emphasizes that pharmacare should be supported by
e–prescribing linkages and include optimal prescribing:
· provision of a prescription medication that is the most clinically appropriate for the patient's
condition;
· safe and effective;
· part of a comprehensive treatment plan; and,
· cost effective to meet the patient's need.
Canadian Doctors for Medicare believes patients' access to prescription drugs should be based on
need, not on their ability to pay. There has been a fundamental change in the medical practice since
medicare began in Canada. Doctors, along with many health practitioners, use medication as a
primary component of treatment; it is an essential part of a patient's treatment plan and substantially
improves outcomes. The organization agrees ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

publicly acknowledged the importance of a pan–Canadian pharmaceutical strategy. In June 2015,
CPhA launched Pharmacare 2.0 – a leading consultation process to cultivate national consensus for
a pan–Canadian pharmacare framework. The organization believes that a sustainable and affordable
pharmacare model must be based on optimal health outcomes and patient–centred care.[3] More
recently, the CPhA has highlighted that pharmacists are not for or against any specific model, but

1984 Commentary

  • 1. 1984 Commentary The second half of 1984 was good but not what I imagined. Winston meets Julia, a girl that he works with. He thinks she work for ¨big brother¨ but when they get to know each other they both dislike big brother. They start to do illegal things and disobey big brother without telling anyone. Another one of their co–workers named O'brien invites them over. He tells them that he is against big brother and Winston and Julia tells him that they are too. Later that night the police come and take Winston and Julia away, O'brien lied to Winston and Julia and is actually part of big brother. They get tortured until they become under full control of big brother. Once they are under big brothers control they are put back into the world to do nothing. I thought the end would be more exciting, I thought Winston and Julia would actually put up a fight against big brother. The big word I chose for the second half of 1984 is innumerable. I believe that innumerable means thin or weak. The context clues that led me to believe that are ¨They were standing in the shade of hazel bushes. The sunlight, filtering through the innumerable leaves, was still hot on their faces.¨ When it says the sunlight is filtering through the innumerable leaves, that makes me believe the leaves are so thin that ... He starts out not trusting anyone or anything afraid of big brother. Then he meets a girl that works at the same place as Winston, her name Julia. Winston and Julia start to disobey big brother by doing illegal things. A co–worker of Julia and Winston named O'Brien is working for big brother. He catches them and gets them in big trouble. Big brother brainwashes the both of them and now they are released back into the world. Winston is not normal anymore, he went from being afraid of big brother to being controlled by big ... Monsters Social Commentary Monsters (2010) is a modern–day fictional monster film which, acts as a social commentary, touching upon political dilemmas, science fiction, romance and public anxieties. The narrative of the film– based in Mexico– is a world in which the monsters are huge octopus–like aliens. For the past 6 years they have lived in a large area of Mexico that has now been confined as an 'infected zone' however, a huge wall has been built on the Mexico–USA border to keep the aliens out. The film follows a photographer; one of the main characters, Andrew, and his boss' daughter (Sam) – the other main character – as he warily attempts to escort her safely back to her father in the USA after a rogue alien attack left her injured, and the romance between the two throughout their journey. This film uses these aliens with dramatic, symbolic effect to also act as a metaphorical narrative for current societal issues; offering a pragmatic analysis of these underlying ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The image of the warzone is elaborated throughout the film, with the settings including tanks, weapons and general destruction. Another scene in the film when Andrew and Sam got in the cab, seeing the destructed buildings and Sam asked the taxi driver, "Do you feel safe living here?" and the taxi driver replied, "Where would we go? My work, my family is all here." This representation is an iconic resemblance imitating areas of real present civilian conflict zones such as those in Afghanistan and Iraq, portraying the destruction of the lives of the people who live there and the difficulties faced by those who have loved ones entangled in conflict, either as a military or civilian presence. Although we are aware that this destruction was in fact caused by conflict between military and the aliens, the way the scene has been composed and edited shows clear visual similarities to images depicted in the media of destruction in contemporary ... De Nadie Commentary "De Nadie" Commentary This documentary is focused on the numerous immigrants originating from Central America, undertaking an extremely dangerous journey of about 2500 miles up north towards the southern border of the United States, where they hope to cross and profit from the wealth available in the U.S.. The movie is accordingly named "de Nadie", which translates into "No–One", and follows various immigrants on their journeys, interviewing them on their way and depicting the many injustices and setbacks encountered by each of them. The difficulties emphasized in this documentary are mainly the one's which are usually overlooked when discussing the issue of U.S immigration, including political, economical, medical and criminal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Throughout the documentary stories are told by immigrants who crossed paths with La Mara, some about fighting back and being savagely injured, others about obeying and surviving and others who hid and lost everything. Contributing to all this violence and injustice, one would hope for the just calls of the police. Unfortunately the police in Central America is just as bad, and is referred to in the movie as the "thieves with permits". The police is generally known not to help the immigrants or at least act judicially, but rather to assault them, stealing everything they own from them and beating and abusing them sometimes resulting in casualties. This is confirmed in the documentary by many immigrants and civilians in Mexico who have personally experienced the abuse and see no bright future for justice in their country. The police is also accused of being corrupt, so not much can be done against the situation and malpractices, also due to the unwillingness of the victims to file complaints and raise awareness. Most are unwilling out of fear of being deported back to their own country, this bringing us to the next issue, the Immigrations Department. Unfortunately once the immigrants get to the border of Mexico, the next obstacle addressed in the movie is the Mexico Immigrations Department. In the documentary the Immigration Department explains how Mexico has become extremely involved in the U.S immigration procedure of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Data commentary on obesity Colin Andridge Professor Murphy Eng 201 MWF 2:00 3 March 2014 Data Commentary Introduction After reading and evaluating six articles written by experts on obesity, the data seems to imply that better educating people about how their behavioral lifestyle choices effect their future and current health is the best solution. The six journal articles evaluated and analyzed include: David Freedman's article, "How to Fix the Obesity Epidemic," published in Scientific American in 2011. Advocacy and regulation can play a large role in prevention of the problem while physicians consistently research medical solutions for the obese community. Michael Wieting is a professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Lincoln Memorial University where he is also the Dean of Clinical Medicine. Wieting acknowledges different causes and solutions in his paper, and pulls information from many different scholarly papers written by his peers. His paper avoids bias by explaining multiple viewpoints on the issue, which allows the reader to interpret and make conclusions without any sway from the author. The article was written in 2008 and cites sources from the same year, making the statistics relevant relevant and current information. George Blackburn reminds readers about the science behind the epidemic of obesity in his article, "Science Based Solutions to Obesity: What are the Roles of Academia, Government, Industry, and Healthcare." Scientists are constantly researching reasons behind why some people are obese as well as possible scientific solutions that go beyond the everyday "go to the gym" solution. As obesity kills more and more people each year, medical institutions are making a point to study the biochemistry behind the issue. Ode on Melancholy commentary AP Literature 19 August 2013 Ode on Melancholy John Keats's poem, "Ode on Melancholy", serves as an instructional manual on how to cope with sadness and the feeling of melancholy. Through his vivid use of lyrical language and allusions, Keats's is able to depict vivid images that haunt the soul and is able to convey his message that the only way to deal with a sense of melancholy is to accept it. Keats believes that once one can accept sadness and make it a part of his identity, then he can overcome the overwhelming feelings of depression and find true happiness in life. The author also implies that happiness must be earned; to find happiness, one must endure the travesties and turmoil to reach it. Overall, Keats's work has the ... By absorbing the sadness and drowning it out with thoughts of happiness, such as "gazing upon her peerless eyes", one can find happiness once again. The third stanza begins with Keats addressing the mistress as she "Dwells with beauty – beauty that must die". Continuing with the metaphor of the mistress and the feeling of sadness, Keats says that beauty must die. By saying that the mistress is beautiful, Keats is implying that sadness and happiness are linked. The happiness, which is the beauty of the mistress, in life is evanescent and continuously leaving. This comparison of happiness and sadness and the beauty of the woman reinforces the idea that happiness isn't permanent. It is short–lived and comes with its repercussions. Through his poem, "Ode on Melancholy", Keats tries to find the balance between happiness and show his readers how to achieve it. He tells the readers that by accepting the sadness, one can find happiness, even if it is only temporary. Through his allusions and lyrical language, Keats is able to paint the image of happiness and sadness through comparisons to poisonous drugs and beautiful sceneries as well as convey his message to his ... • 11. Commentary On The Great Gatsby The Great Gatsby (adapted for the stage by Simon Levy) Introduction F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel, The Great Gatsby is an impressive social commentary on many themes such as power, money, greed, social status, and so on. The Great Gatsby is originally a novel which has been adapted as a play by Simon Levy. I intend to look at the theoretical aspects of this play and my major focus will be on the social stratification, inequality and gender roles in the American life at that time. The story of the Great Gatsby falls into the timeline of the 1920s. The Story The story of the Great Gatsby is very interesting. It takes place in Long Island in America. A mysterious man Jay Gatsby builds a mansion in West Egg (a fictional place in Long island). Jay ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Buchanans would never accept Gatsby as being in the same social status as them because the Buchanans have had wealth and power in the family for generations and Gatsby had just acquired the wealth. The Buchanans know that Gatsby comes from the lower class background and so they think Gatsby's manner, behavior and taste can never match that of the Buchanans. Warner, Meeker and Eels (2006) describe the concept of the American Dream as follows: "In the bright glow and warm presence of the American Dream all men are born free and equal. Everyone in the American Dream has the right, and often the duty, to try to succeed and to do his best to reach the top". Warner, Meeker and Eells do consider this definition of American Dream contradictory though as they state that "If all men are born equal, there can be no top level to strive for. No such equality, neither in position nor in opportunity, exists and that a person's opportunities are very much dependent on family background" (Warner, Meeker & Eells 2006). So, Gatsby's wealth still doesn't let him enter the elite social class and this shows the inequality between the rich. During the play, we can clearly see this when Daisy Buchanan is completely dazzled in the new found riches of Jay Gatsby but later when Tom exposes Gatsby about his 'shady' businesses, Daisy's reaction is of shock and she stops talking to Gatsby after that. For Daisy, just being wealthy is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

McQueen uses the title to emphasize the conflicts. The speaker's emotions are expressed through two main themes; love and distance. Imagery and diction maximize the emotions associated with these themes. Additionally, she uses many literary devices throughout the poem for effect. There is no iambic pentameter or rhyming pattern. This style gives a conversational, intimate tone; as if the reader is eavesdropping in on the two lovers. Secondly, this informal tone is contrasted by the formal and decisive shape of the poem. Furthermore, it is evident by the physical appearance of the poem that that a conflict of the settings exists, "I watch often not traffic or television but hour by hour the huge tide". The speaker compares two different lifestyles; one of the speaker situated on a coast; soothing, relaxing and simple. Meanwhile her lover is located in a city; loud, tense and complex. The physical divide in the poem presents the conflict in the settings inferring the conflict in the relationship. This conflict is reflected by the change in tone from stanza 1 to stanza 2. The first stanza is full of facts as she sadly describes her reality while the second stanza is full of emotions and hope expressing the metaphysical situation the lovers would be in if united. "If you were with me now" underlines the ambiguity of when "now" will come. As the author guides the reader through the relationship, she dreams of the setting and activities giving hope that the lovers "would" do such things once together. Historically, literature has always echoed the key issues and themes present during that time. In the period which Orwell wrote this novel, totalitarian government was a popular concept seeing implementation around the world such as Nazi Germany, Soviet Russia, and Mussolini's Italy. • 23. Mere Christian Commentary "This parable, unique to Luke, requires the utmost care in its interpretation. It must neither be over– allegorized as it was by the early church fathers, nor reduced to a simplistic meaning hardly worthy of Jesus' teaching. Above all, it must be understood in its context, with attention to the questions of vv.25 and 29 and to Jesus' application in vv.36–37," write Liefeld and Pao (The Expositor's Bible Commentary 2007: 197). It is highly important to an exegetical reading of this passage, found in St. Luke's gospel in chapter ten, verses twenty–five through thirty–seven, that the focus lie on the context of the passage. Arising from that he would have studied the rest of Scripture and matters incidental. Another translation refers to this man as "an expert in the Law" meaning the Torah, not the laws governing society. It is indeed interesting that the man asks a question he already knows the answer to. I can imagine him being really snide and sarcastic, like a punk junior high kid, as he mouthed off, "Teacher! What must I do to inherit eternal life?" He asked the question in order to gain an advantage over Jesus and to show him up or to test him (Tyndale Commentary on Luke 1975: 205). He also asked a question with no intention of living out the implications of its answer. Explain the relationship among the different perspectives taken on developing reading competence in each of the readings. What conclusions might be drawn about the challenges in facilitating literacy for urban and other underserved students? What approaches might best serve the needs of these students? Shanahan (2011) makes an excellent point that for each discipline there should be a different way of ensuring that learning is taking place. Not all disciplines are the same, so their approaches should be different as well. If students struggle with history they may also struggle with English if they are taught the same way. Learning goals and strategies vary by class and so should teaching method and delivery. The points in this article should be taken into consideration when teachers create lesson plans. Taylor (2003) et al. in this study investigated the effects of teaching on students' reading achievement. Points of View Commentary 'Points of View' Commentary 'Points of View', written by Lucinda Roy, is a poem that features different points of view (as the title suggests) on the subject of water: those of women collecting water in, what can be assumed to be, an African country and those of a person living in a modernised (possibly a 'Western') country. Furthermore, Roy seems to be critical of the aforementioned Western lifestyle and this poem presents an underlying moral that everybody should be grateful for what they have, regardless of how basic those things are. Roy's poem is comprised of two main stanzas; the first of which details the women's daily struggle to provide water for their families. The term "scoop up" evokes an image of a woman scooping up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is interesting how some of the narrator's Western–like education seeps through into the stanza; now, in contrast to the first stanza, there are terms such as the children jumping not through 'water', but from "element to element" (air to water) and imagery of diamond–drops shooting along "trajectories too long for me to measure", as opposed to the first stanza's fairly basic lexical choice. Overall, this poem displays two different points of view surrounding water – those of an assumed Western woman and African woman (I feel that it is safe to assume that the narrator is a woman, since there is a lot of references to women in the first stanza – thus setting the tone for the rest of the poem). As we can see, the two views are vastly different but it is as though the narrator questions her own views of water and seeks answers from the people who value water the most; something that would be a somewhat humbling experience, I'm sure. Finally, I would say that this poem is very relevant to today – many people living in a Western country do seem to take water for granted, and this poem seems very critical of that, as there are people who have to struggle to obtain what is considered one of life's most basic ... • 48. The Assault Commentary 1 February 2015 In The Assault by Harry Mulisch, Anton is haunted by his past throughout his life. His past during World War II consist of witnessing losing his family. This impacts him to the extent that his choices of living life are influenced by it. From the excerpt of The Assault, Anton finally realizes what he has done, in which he notices his choices are made from neglecting his past. He sees his current family asleep and evaluates himself whether or not he should seek the truth of his past from a man named Takes, knowing that if he does, he would have a different perspective on his life. Anton is considering if he should seek the truth of his past. His state of mind is being compared to it "cooling off," conveying he wants to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, Anton's "feeling" of "dangerous confusion" makes him lack the ability to quickly make decisions in critical times. Anton wants to undergo with his decision even though he finds it to be dangerous. Mulisch compares Anton's approach to the truth to danger, depicting something dangerous is awaiting Anton if he approaches the truth. The audience's reaction to this metaphor would be Anton is willing to risk his life for a new one, in which he cannot stand living a life without gaining knowledge about his past. Mulisch uses "fish" to describe how Anton gets the "paper" with Takes' contact information. The audience sees the connotation, "fish," is used to show Anton has made a definite decision, in which he chooses to know the truth. The "paper" Anton has "fish" will provide him answers of his past, although it may bring danger. In conclusion, in The Assault by Mulisch, Anton makes a definite decision to search for the truth despite knowing the knowledge that he will gain will change him. • 50. Commentary On The Secret Of Bees While reading the entertaining commentary on The secret of bees, my opinions were questioned more than once. Several of the statements I completely agreed with, while others I disagreed strongly. The first statement that came to my attention was that "If I were a South Carolina resident, I would be unhappy since the author's depiction of the state was unflattering." This is true, Sue Monk Kidd did not persuaded me to visit. However, I doubt that many would be unhappy. The book took place over 50 years ago and numerous conditions have changed. However, heavy racism is alive in the South today, and if residents and readers realized what racism actually is, maybe it would encourage them to change their ways. I wasn't surprised that our Catholic school assigned us this novel, even though August worships a different religion. The Secret Life of Bees has won numerous awards and is well loved. The writer of the commentary wrote that it didn't make much sense for black parents to name their child after a president that was pro–slavery. Blacks weren't educated as equally as whites, and maybe they just admired the name Zachary and was just a coincidence. I thought that that the statement about May overreacting on Zach being arrested. It was narrow–minded because the justice system was different 50 years ago. It has been shown in the book that even with the most minor offenses, blacks receive more extreme treatment, while whites can beat someone and walk away scot–free. Even though Zach didn't break the law, the police didn't care that he was innocent. I disagree on how T. Ray is 100% evil. He is extremely misguided, clueless on how to raise a child, in grieving, and is reminded of the women he loves every time he looks at his daughter. Although most of the things he did were inexcusable, we don't receive any background on T. Ray other than that he was evil. I feel that talking about his part would deepen his ... His fingers make a hat about his head. His pulse beat is so slow we think him dead. He loops in crazy figures half the night Among the trees that face the corner light. But when he brushes up against a screen, We are afraid of what our eyes have seen: For something is amiss or out of place When mice with wings can wear a human face. Theodore Roethke's poem 'The Bat' clearly focuses on the animal the bat and effectively conveys through the latter an important message to the reader. One could interpret this poem in various ways; however a prominent theme would be that every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By comparing the bat's depiction during both day and night, Roethke may be trying to convey that the bat is actually no more than a simple and peaceful being, which has been wrongly portrayed for years. From another point of view, the author could be wanting to convey, through the image of a bat, that everyone has a 'dark side'. Roethke ingeniously does so in the final line of the poem with the latter's twist metaphorical ending; "when mice with wings can wear a human face" (Roethke, 10). As previously discussed, bats are usually associated with slyness and darkness, by making the bat "wear a human face", Roethke is trying to express that bats can sometimes resemble humans and vice versa. Ultimately, humans can also sometimes 'wear a bat face' and have a darker side. The author also gives the poem a very descriptive tone through a significant amount of imagery. For example, the metaphor; "his fingers make a hat about his head" (Roethke, 3), provides a detailed description of the bat's upper body in such a way that the reader is able to picture the bat as what Roethke wants him/her to picture it as. One could also infer that the author may again be trying to make the connection between bat and man; since men wear hats and not bats. Another metaphor would be; "by day the bat is cousin to the mouse" (Roethke, 1). Of course, mouse ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thanks to that, a negative externality occurs because the production of goods and services in Australia has a major effect upon a third party. For example, a company is set up next to a residential area; this will have a negative effect on the residents living in that region. For this reason the Australian government is deciding whether to impose taxes on carbon emissions for the worst polluters Figure 1 shows that the marginal private costs of the Australian firms are below the marginal social costs, the pollution created has caused an extra cost to the society, such as respiratory ... Although taxes are seen as a way of making polluters pay, there are some problems with this solution. First, the Australian government will find it very difficult to measure accurately the pollution created by firms and give a value to it, in which it can be regained by tax. Second, it is also very hard to identify which firms are polluting and to what extent are they responsible for the pollution. Third, it is often argued that tax do not actually stop the pollution from taking place. Furthermore, putting taxes on those firms will lead to inflation because they have higher costs to pay for, and to compensate for that, they will increase consumer prices. The shortage in domestic investment could lead to the closure of many firms or movement abroad and that will doubtless cause unemployment in Australia. Furthermore, while Australia imposes this

Reflective Commentary Guidance for completion of your reflective commentary A reflective approach to your educational and culturalexperience will bring about changes in the way you perceive your academic environment. Further, this reflective approach can go on to produce changes in attitudes and awareness which may, in turn, benefit your personal and professional growth. While a single experience in isolation, such as your overseas or homeplacement, will be insufficient to achieve such growth, that experience coupled with reflection may serve as a powerful impetus for development of key transferable skills which can directly impact on your future employability. The "acid breath of noon" approaches in a "Slow" manner, as if sneaking up on autumn. The personification of the "acid breath" not only suggests to the reader the fog is murderous, but one could be lead to imagine that the fog is poison gas. This is because "Field of Autumn" was published in 1947, two years after the Second World War; clearly the memory of the War would be even more poignant than it is to this day, scars more fresh, and any references more painful. • 63. Frankenstein Commentary In order to make the found poem as close to the original as possible, I intended to add in very few words that were not in chapter five, the chapter I chose to use as the source for my poem. I also intended to include Gothic elements which were included in the first few lines when I wrote: "It was a dreary night, Dismal and wet, The rain poured from a black and comfortless sky. I had worked hard." A dark stormy night is a Gothic element as it exhibits the metonymy of gloom and horror that was present throughout the chapter. The inclusion of this Gothic element is insightful because it sets the stage for a dark gloomy event soon to occur. The poem was intended to side with Victor Frankenstein and paint a scary picture of the monster. While I was compiling the words for the poem from the chapter, I noticed that Victor Frankenstein used so many words to negatively describe the creature. The words used to for the monster were perfect so I decided to side against the monster. I had the preconception that in order to advocate for Victor, I had to use the harshest words to attack the monster. I wrote "It became a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived, the demoniacal corpse to which I had created." Using harsh words impressed upon the reader a negative view on the monster. Towards the end of the poem I decided to integrate some drama, suspense, and fear. For example, I wrote: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Patchwork Commentary Patchwork Analysis Eavan Boland's unique poem, Patchwork, allows the reader to be privy to the private thoughts of a persona, presumably the author herself, as she struggles to answer the question of fate or destiny. Throughout the poem, while quilting alone late at night, the speaker puzzles over the randomness of the universe, utilizing the simple quilt metaphor to inspire a final epiphany. Immediately revealing the central theme of the poem as well as alluding to the narrator's apparent self–doubt, the first stanza is an imperative aspect of this piece. The speaker begins by stating that she has "been thinking at random on the universe, or rather, how nothing in the universe is random". So commences her journey to solve the question: ... Fate determines that the quilt will be made, and so it will be. It guides the woman's hands as her mind once again floats away from reality and begins to explore the metaphysical world. In addition, upon describing her "secondhand sewing machine", the narrator further exposes her self–depreciating character. In the fifth stanza, the speaker makes inconsiderable progress in solving the crucial question regarding the randomness of the universe. As she realizes the overwhelming number of uncertainties in the universe, the woman chooses instead to concentrate on the task at hand, turning her "back...to the dark" or the unknowns. However, she is unable to resist the compelling temptation of mystery, and quickly attempts to contemplate the "stars and bits of stars and little bits of bits" which reside throughout the universe. While the "bits" in this statement signify randomness, the "stars" represent the unknown. This symbolism, coupled with the use of repetition and alliteration, emphasize the woman's sheer confusion on the matter at hand. The vast uncertainty of the universe has forced her to consider the possibility of a wholly random universe. The persona's confusion is confirmed through her question: "is it craft or art?" These joys are emphasised through imagery of summer – be it activities, food, the beach, a bicycle ride, various techniques such as juxtaposition and enjambment are used to evoke fond memories from the reader. MacNeice's poem is set in the southwest of England, on a hill with a chalk horse carved into it. It is during the height of summer, when the grasshoppers are buzzing and the children are playing outside. I mostly just felt very stifled with the rambunctious quips that flow in this film like a breeze and fill it up to the very brim. Its social commentary is analogous to the indomitably obnoxious teenage angst profiled rampantly that is ever so pervasive in this day and age. Things to note after a thoroughgoing watch of this are that it's simply not quite your standard typified internalized drama that sprawls incessantly and instead conjures a very pleasant, a somewhat weirdly endearing troupe of personages that you can't help but appreciate because they're so oddly realistic. But as the reader dives into the other side, one feels the hope drain out and the author begins to use words such as "cold," "clipped," "hard," and "condemned." The ocean is characterized as having "Shining hair," "arm of surf," "fingers of spray," and "rising with a roar."
