British director Jamie Thraves began making experimental short films while studying at university in 1989. He used his award-winning shorts to get work with a video production company, where he directed his first low-budget music videos for about £5,000 each. Two of his most notable early music videos were for Radiohead's "Just" and Coldplay's "The Scientist", which had higher budgets of £100,000 and £200,000 respectively but were still shot within three days each. Thraves is known for crafting natural, storytelling music videos that focus on conveying the emotion of the song's lyrics rather than flashy visuals. He has since parlayed his music video success into a film career
1. Jamie Thraves
Jamie Thraves is a British director, he began make an
experimental short films in 1989 at Hull University.
Used award-winning short film as a ‘calling card’ to get a ‘foot in
the door’ with the video production company Factory Films.
Thraves began by shooting three very low budget music videos –
cost about £5,000 each.
Thraves sets a original Theme despite the fact that he was on low
budget, his ideas where never to the extent as was Katie Perries
or Lady Gagas. As seen in the music video ‘Coldplay Scientist’ it
is clear the surroundings are local (Urban)
2. Case study 1
As can be seen for many directors in the
business it is a precarious existence where their
livelihood is dependent on each commission
Jamie Thraves submitted treatments for his two
best known videos and each was accepted
3. Productions
The first of which Thraves had worked on was ‘Radiohead –
Just’, this production was given a budget of £100,000. Which
was pretty decent for his first piece of work, seeing that in
general it is difficult to be funded with a large amount of
money by institutions for a beginners. The music video was
shot within in three days

Another of Thraves productions was ‘Coldplay – The

had a higher budget in comparison to Radiohead..
Consisting on £200,000, which was also shot in three days.

4. Thraves ideas for music videos are very natural, limited and plain
nothing to vibrant or eye-catching this could be simply because
he wants to tell a story behind the given lyrics so that is where all
the attention would be on.
5. Jamie Thraves most recent video is Japanese Popstars – Song for Lisa
Currently videos cost about £20,000
Shooting time – 2 days
Jamie has cleverly used the music videos to get into the film business. This has allowed
him to gain more experience, as shown he has been given great opportunities being
able to deliver his ideas.
Has so far shot three features:
The Low Down
The Cry of the Owl
Treacle Jr
6. Jamie’s Tips
There are three specific videos that share similar virtues which all have literal
similarities. In the videos ‘emotion’ dominates as it strongly relates to the lyrics
of the song. This links back to Thraves fascination of the movie industry seeing
that the moving images in the music videos tell a story, this brings about
several emotions that are intended.
