3. Radiohead - Just
This was Thraves’ breakout video. In the video, a man is lying on a pavement
confronted by an angry crowd, it got him a lot of attention because of its strong
narrative and its use of subtitles, the ending of the video still causes a discussion
amongst fans today, showing how good the video was.
It had a £100,000 budget and was shot in a time span of three days.
Here is a look at the video:
In this video, it features a man who is seen to be in a professional career, likely
middle class wearing a suit and tie, finding that he is battling with his fears
undergoing depression. A scene in the video where he is laying on the floor and a
man approaching him asking what he is doing can indicate his desperate need
for a hero in his life to take away his struggles.
4. Coldplay - The Scientist
This video won three awards at the 2003 MTV VMAs including Best Direction and
Breakthrough Video.
The video uses reverse style. For the group’s lead vocalist, Chris Martin to appear
to be singing the lyrics in the reversed footage, he had to memorise singing the
song backwards within a month.
The video was filmed at different locations including London and the Bourne
Woods in Surrey.
It was shot in three days and had a £200,000 budget.
In this video, the effect of using different places to shoot and different kinds of
people represents diversity and contrast in all of their representative lives.
Thraves’ use of reverse style can indicate feeling that everything in life is against
you while trying to move forward as well as trying to start again and fresh.
