1. Question 1 script
Danial:
In our video we wanted to follow as many conventions as possible but we
wanted go against conventions allowing our video to be unique and stand out
against the rest.
We could say that our video in some ways hasdeveloped the convention of a
typical heartbreak story. We would usually expect to see a broken hearted girl
within pop, but we decided to use a broken hearted boy instead, which is seen in
the video for the song ‘The Scientist’ by the band Coldplay. As in this video Chris
reminiscing about the happy times he shared with a loved one and is desperate
to give it another chance. Which influenced our idea to go against this convention
as we felt it would give our video individuality and make it recognisable with an
audience.
Poppy:
We followed the convention of the frequent use of close up shots, which is used
within the pop genre with artists such as Katy Perry in her song wide awake
which can be said to help promote her 3D motion picture which was released at
the time. This incorporates Andrew Goodwin’s theory of the frequent use of close
up shots of the artist, which are usually demanded by the record label to help sell
the products and promote the label. This influenced us to use this convention in
our video, as we wanted to promote the label and artist as much as possible.
Furthermore we feel that these close up further emphasise the feeling of
loneliness as these shots regularly show the actor looking disheartened.
Danial:
We would expect the locations of pop videos to be extravagant e.g. sunny
beaches, nightclubs etc. Which can be seen in the video for the song ‘Young’ by
the artist Tulisa as she uses the backdrop of Los Angeles and an expensive hotel
rooms and conducts large parties on rooftops.
But we decided to challenge this convention as we wanted to keep it simplistic
and relatable to the meaning of the song seen by The Script in their video of ‘The
Man Who Can’t be Moved’. As they used simple locations such as a multi story
car park. Making the audience focus on the meaning behind the lyrics rather than
the location they where in.
Poppy: Another convention used in pop video is the use of product placement
like in Lady Gaga’s Bad romance. As there is advertisement of the company
Beats and Nemiroff vodka, this is because these companies have paid to
advertise their product agreeing with Jason Mitchell’s theory. We tried not to
follow this convention, as we had no companies paying us to advertise their
products in our music video. However in some parts of our video especially
when the characters are using their mobile phones it is clear to the audience
what brand they are.
2. Danial: A typical conventionexpected in the videos of the pop genre would be a
bright colour palette an example of this would rude boy by Rihanna which uses
a wide range of bright colour’s such as green, red, yellow orange etc. This gives a
sort of a energetic exotic vibe to video. However we challenged this convention
by using a much duller colour palette such as grey and black, as this links in with
the dull and depressing meaning behind the song.
Poppy: A typical convention of a pop music video is how the camera displays
women through the eyes of a male. Laura Mulvey’s Male Gaze theory suggests
that camera angles and movement are provocative in order to interest a male
audience. As in video such as sexy chick by David Guetta there is a plethora of
woman in swimwear and the camera movements show the women in a
suggestive way through the eyes of a male. However we felt that this would not
suit or be appropriate for the narrative of heartbreak.
Danial: Finally our video follows Andrew Goodwin’s theory which suggests that
there is a relationship between the music and the visuals which illustrate the
lyrics. As in our music video on the lyric ‘ Some try to hand me money’ the visual
is displaying a kind passerby trying to hand the boy money, but he is refusing the
money as ‘he’s not broke, he’s just a broken hearted man’.
