Objectives
3. What is Engineering
Engineering may be defined as the creative
application of science, mathematical methods,
and empirical evidence to the innovation,
design, construction and maintenance of
structures, machines, materials, devices,
systems, processes, and organizations.
5. Main Branches of Engineering
Electrical Engineering
Computer Engineering
Mechanical Engineering
Chemical Engineering
Civil Engineering
Aerospace Engineering
Material Engineering
6. Other Branches of Engineering
Architectural Engineering
Oceanic Engineering
Agricultural Engineering
Textiles Engineering
Operation Researchers and Systems Engineering
Nuclear Engineering
7. CHEMICAL ENGINEEING
Chemical Engineering involves the application of
chemistry, physics and engineering to the design
and operation of plants for the production of
materials that undergo chemical changes during
manufacture.
Examples are paints, lubricants, fertizers,
petroleum products, etc
8. Why Petroleum Engineering
With the discovery of Oil in 1896 and subsequently its exploration
in 2007, there are a lot of job opportunities for people in the
Petroleum Engineering.
Ghana’s oil resources stretch across the shoreline from the Cape
Three Points in the West to Keta in the east.
Ghana oil reserves holds about 660 million barrels as at 2021
ranking 43rd in the World.
10. How to become a Petroleum
Engineer
In order to be eligible for admission to study
petroleum engineering at the university level:
One must have a strong background in physics,
chemistry and elective mathmathetics among
other subjects.
11. Professional Qualification
Under the Engineering Council Act, 2011 (Act 819) Section 14
(1):
A person does not qualify to be registered to practice
engineering unless that person is certified by a licensed
body
The licensed engineering bodies in Ghana are:
Ghana Institution of Engineers (GHIE)
Institution of Engineering and Technologists, Ghana (IET-Gh)
12. Discovery of Oil in Ghana
In July 2007, Tullow Oil and Kosmos Energy
discovered oil in commercial quantities in the
Western Region of Ghana, now named the Jubilee
Field. The Jubilee Field is offshore and it is
estimated to hold 700 million barrels of oil.
There are been new discoveries of oil in other
parts of the Western Region namely Twenneboa,
Enyenra and Ntomme.
13. Career Path in Petroleum Engineering
Reservoir Engineers – production of oil and gas via proper
placement, production rates and enhance oil recovery techniques
Drilling Engineers – drilling exploratory, production and well
injection
Production engineers – manage the interface between the
reservoir and the well
Petrophysicists – gather information about subsurface properties
to build well bore stability models and study rock properties
14. Some of the Oil and Gas Companies in
Ghana
Ghana National Petroleum Company (GNPC)
Petroleum Commission
Tema Oil Refinery Company Ltd (TOR)
Tema Lube Oil Company
ENI Company
Tullow Oil Company Ltd
Kosmos Energy
Bulk Oil Storage Company Ltd
